English title: Delicate Beauty in the Palm Rating: 3.5 stars rounded up
A decent modern romance featuring a couple that's already dating at the start of the book. However, the FL, Chen Die, breaks things off with the ML, Wen Liang, because she feels like the relationship is too one-sided. She's been in love with Wen Liang for years, but as the cold CEO type, he doesn't seem like he's the type to settle down with any one woman, and she's tired of getting her hopes up again and again. To save herself some future pain, she decides to break things off early and focus on her career instead, as she wants to join the showbiz industry as an actress.
After the breakup, Wen Liang quickly realizes the how important the FL is to him and can't seem to let her go. Thus he starts actively pursuing her until she finally believes that his feelings are real and they get together.
This is a feel good story. The FL and ML both have a sad history with their family, but other than that, everything goes pretty smoothly for them. The FL's fledging career as an actress takes off very quickly as her first project is a film directed by a famous director and ends up being a huge success at the box office. Her career afterwards continues on a meteoric rise, to the point where you can't help but roll your eyes at the point where she's winning Best Actress awards. She's super beautiful and has countless talented suitors, especially after they realize she's back on the market. There are some people jealous of her who try to screw her over, but she is always able to clear her name and usually the ML will take revenge on them on her behalf.
I liked the FL's personality and attitude. She is focused on her career and doesn't let other things distract her. For example, Chen Shuyuan, the fake daughter of the Chen family who feels threatened by the FL, the real Chen daughter, keeps going after the FL, but the FL honestly doesn't care much about her. Also, as a result of living with the ML for so long, she has her own sense of pride as well and doesn't let others trod over her. It's for that reason that she decides to break up with him. This is a good exerpt from the novel that reflects her thoughts on this:
She had been with Wen Liang for six years.
During those six years, her initial feelings for him had caused her to break apart pieces of herself to fit him—blending into his world until she lost her own sense of self.
Like a pet cat Wen Liang had raised.
But now, she finally belonged to herself.
The ML was okay, felt very much like your standard, run of the mill cold CEO type. I did think that his personality changed too much too quickly after the breakup though. It's like one moment he's the indifferent and prideful CEO, and only a few chapters later he's already become a whipped lover who has high tolerance for the FL's temper.
What I appreciated is about him is how he's always looking out for the FL. When her birth mother was mean towards her because of Chen Shuyuan, he retaliates by competing (and winning) against the Chen family at a business auction the next day. The ML is also incredibly possessive and can go crazy when stimulated. When Chen Shuyuan pulls a stunt on set that causes the FL to fall off a horse while filming, the ML pulls a knife on her later in retaliation, and it's only because the FL was there to calm him down that nothing more happened.
The story was a mix of the romance and the FL's experience as an actress. Luckily the author didn't go into too much detail about whatever project she's filming, as that tends to bore me, and kept things high level except for when she needed to go into more detail for a plot point. And as with any showbiz novel, there were also plenty of online comments thrown in from all sorts of folks: the FL's fans, CP fans, random passersby, etc. It read like a very well rounded romance novel set in the showbiz industry.
Would recommend for anyone looking for a lighthearted modern romance!
