This was never meant to be a book, as Laleeta wrote these expressions recollecting her journey as a writer. She just wanted to scribble the experiences people go through that she witnessed around her - music, and daily activities to examine universal themes like the wonders of relationships, the identity of the self, happiness, death and spirituality, philosophy, her fantasies, and love. After writing more than a handful of poems, web series, and regional films; it was the right time for her to publish her first collection of poetry. If you read her writing, you will know that expressing the innermost human feelings via different forms of the medium - is something which she holds very dear to her heart. Poetry is where she feels most at home.
She wonders if her grandfather – who was a renowned Marathi novelist from India – had known that she could also write well, they would’ve discussed several ideas and he might have seen the artist in her.

She wonders if her grandfather – who was a renowned Marathi novelist from India – had known that she could also write well, they would’ve discussed several ideas and he might have seen the artist in her. ___
I shared a very special bond with my grandfather and have wished him to be alive to witness & share few of my memorable moments and accolades. The author's feeling, through her words & this book, brought back that ache and the wish to feel his presence in my life, again.
She begins the book by giving an ode to her grandfather and then goes on to weave magic into words via 27 poems.
Her scribblings in her journal, her putting of thoughts on paper, made the basis for this book.
The feelings she went through as a child because of her dark skin, curly hair, the heartbreak can only be imagined to some extent. Her grandfather was a writer too and asked her to be practical & work towards high paying professions. She nipped her writing in the bud & lived a lonely life till the time she started writing again to express herself.
The beginning 'an ode to my grandfather' made me teary eyed, a trailer of what would was to follow ahead.
Each poem is represented with a simple yet effective doodle and i instantly fell in love with them.
The poems are definitely an expression of longing for her grandfather's presence & her thoughts on her topsy turvy life. My favorite poem was All I Need Is You.
The author, who deeply admired her writer grandpa, faced disappointment when he suggested she pursue a paying profession rather than writing, despite her presenting him with her first poem. Despite the setback, she persisted and continued writing in a diary. Now, after many years, she has compiled her first set of poems, wondering if her grandpa would finally recognize her writing prowess and wondering what she would discuss with him. The language in this collection is both simple and poetic, creating an enjoyable experience for readers. With 27 poems, the themes covered are diverse, ranging from love to sorrow and everything in between. Some poems are brief and concise, while others extend to a couple of pages; however, the quality of each verse remains consistently outstanding. Throughout the book, doodles add to its charm, enhancing the overall reading experience. Among the many captivating poems, some of my favorites include "An Ode to My Grandfather," which eloquently depicts the author's writing journey since childhood and tugs at the heartstrings. "A Shot of Zen" offers a realistic portrayal of events following a shot, while "Nightmarish Reality" delivers a poignant voice portraying the inner turmoil of a young girl. "Oh! Realization" explores the need to discover which scars from the past are worth showcasing. "An Effortless Recollection of You" is another poem that beautifully held my attention. In conclusion, this compilation is a delightful collection of poems, skilfully penned by the author. The wide range of themes covered and the simplicity yet poetic beauty of the language make it a rewarding read. In all, it is 4/5 stars and would recommend it to anyone seeking to immerse themselves in the world of heartfelt verses.

If I Knew I Was a Writer Too is a mesmerizing collection of poetry that captivated my heart from the very first page. The author, Laleeta, takes us on an enchanting journey through the labyrinth of human emotions and experiences, artfully weaving together music, daily activities, and profound philosophical musings.
As I delved into each poem, I couldn't help but feel the raw emotions pouring out from the words. It's evident that poetry is where she finds her true voice and solace, and it reflects in every verse.

If you seek a collection that touches your soul and leaves you with a sense of wonder, then If I Knew I Was a Writer Too is an ideal choice. I highly recommend it to all poetry enthusiasts and anyone looking for a poetic journey through the human experience.
The human experience is often characterized by the tendency to contemplate how things could have been different or how situations might have unfolded in alternative ways.
This contemplation arises from the unique combination of our reflective nature, which allows us to look back on past events, and our imaginative capacity, which enables us to envision various possibilities.
Laleeta Tongo, author of the book, ‘If He Knew I Was a Writer Too’ also feels similarly as she ponders upon how if her grandfather were there, she would have shown him what he’s passed on to me, as some words, a few lines and the sensitivity flowing like a river - are all that remain.
My favorite poem of the collection would be Giving Up On You, which acknowledges that the reciprocation of feelings didn't happen early on, and the initial indifference prevented any hasty entanglements.
This delay, as has been reflected, is a blessing in disguise, sparing them from becoming one of those individuals who might have seen the subject as a fleeting thrill, only to abandon them later without remorse.
As mentioned in book, unbeknownst to the author, the assortment of musings penned on paper evolved into her debut poetry book. And I can say that this compilation is truly heartfelt and the poems will remain with readers for a long time. Hence, I am going to give this FIVE STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

From how artfully the poems have been composed, It is very evident that the poems have been written from the poet's own experiences. This particular quote really resonated with me- ‘I have three friends for a lifetime, two dogs like the Divine and a temple full of books I have immense love for noble deeds, taking philosophical long walks, and sending across compassionate looks.’ And my favourite poem of all is ‘Searching for Lost words’. This poetry book is dedicated to the poetess' grandfather, who was also a writer, in hope of the conversations they would've had had he known about her skill. The accompanying illustrations are equally poetic and will make you stop and think.
I liked the formatting and different poetic structures used. I did like the first few poems and was interested in reading more. However, I couldn't understand a lot of the other poems; the language was complex, and the sentences were tough to understand despite reading them multiple times. It seems she's written mostly about romantic relationships and the changing lens she views them through while growing up. The ones I resonate with the most are 'Before Making That Proposal' and 'Too Much To Ask'.
Do read this book if you like reading verbose poetry.
"And I must carry my backpack because you never know which face will steal the show!"
The very first thing that attracted me was the blurb and "An Ode to My Grandfather." Just like Laleeta, my grandfather, too, was very much interested in literature and used to always praise my essays in school (though he wasn't a novelist). The relationship of a grandfather and a granddaughter is unique. I know exactly what Laleeta is feeling.
I am absolutely stunned by Laleeta's writing. Her poems are brilliant. I wish she would come up with more and more books in the future.
The sentences are simple. You can finish reading it soon. The expressions and emotions in the poems are brilliant and will last an impression on you. Also, by reading it, you can promote budding authors from India and encourage them to write more.
A short and supple read of 64 pages, this collection of poems is a swift and sweet read that holds a sense of intimacy for the reader. The book contains works on a variety of emotions and circumstances in life, capturing the author's progress as the pages advance. The poems often have the traditional rhyming pattern, and the pages are regularly supplied with little doodles/illustrations.
It reminded me of the poems I read when my friends quietly wrote in the back of the class, of poems my brother used to scribble in a moment of enthusiasm and emotion. The writing has that subtle sense of whimsical and amateurish freshness, that is very endearing to read. Overall, I think I would like to see the poet employ a more mature style of writing in their future works, while keeping the youthful aspect of it alive and well.
✍️ Let me first appreciate the super simple yet unique book cover and the font style used for those headings. It is beautiful from every angle.
A lifespan and 27 poems - that's all about the book.
Though I read many poetry books since last year and most of them have the same plot - life, different shades of emotion, fall apart, recovering - I have to agree that every book has its flow of writing. As they are poetry, already they have a tune and if that tune touches one soul only through his written letters - that's the winning moment of an author.
👉 Like this one I felt more literally content. The use of vocab, narration and rhythm are well crafted and much more appreciating.
👉🏻This is a quick read. One can finish easily in one sitting and reading something like this means having a cheat meal once in a while to change the monotonous taste of life.

She's got this knack for using simple words that pack a punch, and you can finish it in one go, but trust me, those emotions will stick around.
Plus, there are these cool illustrations that add to the whole vibe. If you're into deep thoughts and poetry that's like a chat with a friend, give this book a shot. It's a gem, that should be read by everyone.
