Illus. in full color. Defines and illustrates more than 200 words, and introduces hundreds more. "A compact introduction to the use of a dictionary."--"School Library Journal."
Great book with a large selection of words with their definitions. There are pictures for every defined word that have even more vocabulary words next to their illustrations. For example, Vegetable is defined and then there are examples of tomatos, pods, peas, potatos, carrots, and lima beans illustrated beneath. Or another example, River is defined and then are examples of what makes a river such as: Rain Clouds, Stream, Lake, Waterfall, Riverbank, Mouth, and Delta. And another example is the word Mountain is defined and then there are examples of a mountain area such as: Volcano, Summit, Peak, Snow Avalanche, Glacier, Foothill, Landslide, Cliff and Valley. I learned that a Dandelion seed is a fruit.
We used this as part of Sonlight's Language Arts K curriculum. Each week as we added a new letter and letter sound, we looked up the letter in this picture dictionary to see some different things that start with that letter. It was a welcome and engaging part of the LA curriculum that not only reinforced the letter sounds, but also introduced the idea of an alphabetized dictionary.
A great resource for teaching your little ones about alphabetical order and finding items when they are ordered in this way. Used to help find words that started with each 'letter of the week'.
Cute illustrations, but certainly dated as far as some of the words used (especially those for Inuit and other Native peoples). It brought back a lot of childhood memories reading this.
