This is much, much more than just another book retelling the Eddas. Thorpe takes Norse myth forward, dedicating absolutely huge sections to northern Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. He delves into the folklore of those countries, demonstrating how Norse myth persisted up until at least the early 20th century. This is why one star is missing; the book is more than a little dated, though still richly informative. It's a nice "dipping" book too; you can pick it up and read a few short sections easily whenever.
