Do you believe that there’s no magic stronger than love? Do broken hearts heal with time? “The Unexpected” by L. Rosamond Richards is a romance novel built on the relationship between Lousaine and Annaise. Told from the third-person omniscient point of view, the novel explores the lives of the two lovebirds and the price they had to pay because of their love for each other. The author’s excellent choice of the omniscient perspective enabled her to present every aspect of the characters’ lives, especially those that stretched beyond orality.

Lousaine left the United States for St. Barts to do some soul searching about his life to reconcile his past with his future. Heartbroken as she was, Annaise could neither convince Lousaine to stay nor reveal what troubled him. She was uncertain whether her fiance would come back to her so they could wed and enjoy the life that they both desired. It was especially a difficult time for Eric Scattler, who had groomed Lousaine, his son, to take over as C.E.O of the billion-dollar company he founded and sacrificed his family time for. Lousaine was trapped between a rock and a hard place as he wondered whether he could live with the truth in the future.

For Lousaine, the family secrets that he had just learnt were too devastating for him to estimate how long it would take for him to get over them. He was uncertain about whether his relationship with Annaise would survive the storm that threatened to separate him from his parents. However, Annaise realizes that she’s yet to see the last of the skeletons who haunt Lousaine’s life. The Scattler family turns out to be a haven of dark secrets, whose revelations may destroy the very fabric through which they established it.

What I loved most about this book is the author’s realistic development of the storyline. Setting a book on different continents while maintaining cohesiveness is no mean feat, yet Lattis uses vivid descriptions well, which aided my comprehension and enabled me to form mental pictures of each scene. Lousaine’s trip to Africa almost sounded like an adventurous text; I enjoyed reading about the distinctive cultural practices of Africans and found their simple lifestyle admirable. I am sure that coming up with such detailed descriptions is owed to the author’s extensive research during the writing of this book.

I also commend the author for diversifying her language in the narration of this book. She used dialogue to advance her plot, which gave the characters an active role in the book and helped me to relate to their feelings, thoughts, and emotions. Understanding Lousaine’s feelings of betrayal led me to empathize with him and even laud his decision to sort out the internal turmoil that he was in. Lattis’ general use of flashbacks and suspense not only added to the intertextuality of the book but maintained my concentration from the exposition stages of the plot, and I could not help waiting for the second installment in this series.

There is absolutely nothing that I liked least in this book, as I did not find grammatical errors that detracted from my enjoyment of the book and, therefore, believe that it was professionally edited. I wholeheartedly award this book the maximum rating of five out of five stars. I recommend it to lovers of romance and mystery tales, especially those that enjoy stories built on suspense.

The UneXpected by L. Rosamond Richards was quite an unexpected thrill ride for me. The characters are admirable and intriguing. Once I started reading, I was unable to put this book down until the demanding necessities of life intruded. If you are seeking romance mixed in with the unexpected twists and turns of life read this book. You are taken on the emotional ride with the characters which as I said was a thrill ride for me.

This book gets better as it progresses.

What starts out as an ordinary romance develops into a whirlwind of twists and turns as the story develops. I was far more satisfied with the second half of the book than the first. My only criticism to the author would be to do more to show the characters emotions rather than tell them.

The plot was amazing! Besides that, the story was just ok. The way the characters spoke seemed distant and unrealistic majority of the time. Where they were "flirting" it was just too hard to find the romance within the words. Overall it was a pretty good book that could have been awesome had it been less formal and more real.
