There have been many imitators, but only Jackie Collins can tell you what really goes on in the fastest lane of all. From Beverly Hills bedrooms to a raunchy prowl along the streets of Hollywood; from glittering rock parties and concerts to stretch limos and the mansions of power brokers-Jackie Collins chronicles the real truth from the inside looking out.

Jackie Collins has been called a "raunchy moralist" by the late director Louis Malle and "Hollywood's own Marcel Proust" by Vanity Fair magazine. With over 500 million copies of her books sold in more than forty countries, and with some 30 New York Times bestsellers to her credit, Jackie Collins is one of the world's top-selling novelists. She is known for giving her readers an unrivalled insider's knowledge of Hollywood and the glamorous lives and loves of the rich, famous, and infamous. "I write about real people in disguise," she says. "If anything, my characters are toned down-the truth is much more bizarre."

Jackie Collins died of breast cancer Saturday, September 19, 2015. Jackie Collins, who had kept her illness secret, said recently that she believed in an afterlife, that she had no regrets and that she had emulated Frank Sinatra in that “I did it my way.”

"Sergei Zukov, a Russian drug czar, questioned a young woman tied to a chair in her own home,”
― Jackie Collins, The Power Trip Prequel: An Original Short Story

Whenever I go on vacation, I grab me up some Jackie Collins.
This was a reread and a really fun one. A bunch of Hollywood elite go on a cruise where sex, mayhem and murder are close at hand.

I do like the book. It is not her best but is far from her worst. I liked that it took place on a yacht. I liked reading about the journalists especially, they were fun.

I adored Sugar. Se wasn't a boat guest but I loved her character. Jeremy was disgusting.

But one thing kept me from a 4 rating.

I could not STAND the politician's wife. What was her name? Serena snow or something. She REALLY got on my nerves.

SPOLERS:

I felt for her at first, being married to a prick and a wife beater. But OK, she meets up with the love of her life and then is unresponsive and still worried about her crazy husband whom she does not love and who threatened to skin her alive.

Then said husband dies.

And she is DEVASTATED THINKING IT'S HER FAULT? What the heck?

Then she shines her lover on and starts ignoring him.

And both of them--I mean those letters they got--did it never occur to them to talk to each other? I really did not like that storyline--it was the only one I disliked. Miss Snow's behavior was bizarre-she thought she wished him dead so he died? The guy was shot. And he threatened to kill her. Flynn and basically everybody.

I am sorry he died but could not figure out what her despair was about since she hated him and was free. I still don't get that.

Otherwise--alot of fun. It was pure beach reading which is fantastic when one is away on the ocean.

I'd give it a 3.5. If one likes Collins, this is a good and fun book to read.

This was my first Jackie Collins novel.
I can certainly see by the exquisite writing how she became so popular.
This was a fair bit more explicit than I expected from the synopsis...especially for an audio book.
Filled with drama, exotic locations, more drama, no substance, much sex scenes, and some giggles.

I have to be honest here...don't waste your time. It's been awhile since I've read one of Ms. Collins books and I was very disappointed. I kept waiting for the story to go somewhere and for something (anything) interesting to happen. All you get is the same thing over and over with absolutely no substance. I know (and expect)that she gets down and dirty but how many times can you read about the various couples sexual adventures? After you've read about one encounter between a pair it's more of the same between them over and over. She keeps using the same adjectives repeatedly. If I had to read about the guys' amazing "packages" one more time I swear I would have thrown up. The plot doesn't get moving or remotely interesting until the last quarter of the book and then it all wraps up rather quickly into a nice tidy package with no surprises and turns out to be a a whole lot of nothing! I felt like I wasted my time and the whole story could have been told in less than half the amount of pages. Even if sex is all you want to read about...it's still not done well!

Jackie Collins is my favourite author. I can still remember the first time I read Chances, it then became my favourite book of all time, replacing The Godfather and it hasn't changed since. Every time I read Chances it is like I am reading it for the first time, and unfortunately the book is that good that Jackie has not beat it and probably never will. However The Power Trip was one hell of a read and I loved every minute of it.

I love Lucky Santangelo and every time Jackie announces a new book I hope it will be about her, so I admit to being a bit disappointed when I first read the synopsis for this book. I didn't feel excited at all and to be honest it sounded boring, but how wrong was I? Authors like Jackie, who have been around for years usually end up churning out the same old rubbish, but this book was fantastic and certainly wasn't a rehash of her previous work. Jackie loves to write, she doesn't need the money so she writes for the enjoyment that she knows she gives to her readers old and new.

I was a bit apprehensive at first about the amount of characters introduced all at once. I like things simple but actually it wasn't difficult at all to follow the characters and remember who was who. Jackie has created a fabulous cast of characters here and as with most of her books you can have fun trying to work out which real life people the characters are based on. Near enough every character was likeable despite the fact they were mostly all self centered rich egomaniacs. The story flowed really well and jumped from character to character and the ending could have been plucked from a film. I loved the setting of the luxurious yacht as well, it certainly made a change from the usual boring LA setting.

Overall I would say this is one of the best books I've read in 2012 (and I've read about 120 this year at the time of writing) and unlike other authors that have been around a long time Jackie shows no signs of losing her touch, as I said earlier no book she writes will ever beat Chances but I hope she continues to write books and one day returns to Lucky Santangelo, who remains and will always remain one of my favourite fictional characters. The only negative thing I could say about this is the bits Jackie included about Angelina Jolie, I know Jackie is a fan and has even mentioned her playing Lucky Santangelo (no, no, no, no and again NO) but I can't bear the woman.

Aleksandr Kasianenko has a big birthday surprise planned for his mistress, Bianca. He is going to throw a birthday bash on his huge yacht named of course, Bianca. Aleksandr invites five couples: Senator Hammond Patterson and his wife, Sierra; movie star, Cliff Baxter and his lover, Lori; celebrity footballer, Taye Sherwin and his wife, Ashley. Singer, Luca Perez and his boyfriend, Jeromy. And journalist, Flynn and his friend Xuan.

Sergei Zukov is on a vengeful mission to eliminate Aleksandr. Sergei has found out some information regarding the billionaire that has him seeing red. When Sergei finds out that Aleksandr will be taking a trip on his yacht, he sees the perfect opportunity to get his revenge.

When I pick up a Jackie Collins book I know what I am in for. It is a bunch of crazy characters, a soap opera style story line, an ending where almost all of the characters have a happy ending…all rolled up into a quick and mindless read. This is not a bad thing. I always need something that I don’t have to put too much attention into what I am reading and I know that will leave me saying “Ok, Jackie has done it again”.

This book kind of left me disappointed. I found myself wanting to like a few of the characters but I could not stand any of them. Their self-centered images, sexiest behavior, whininess, and plasticness quickly got to me and turned me off. The first 114 pages were spent in explaining each of the couple’s relationships and why some of the couples had motive to want to kill each other. By the time that the couples boarded the yacht, I tried to stick with the book but could not. I flashed forward to when the action started with the pirates. The epilogue sums up the story line in case you missed anything. I would say that the Power Trip is kind of like a guilty pleasure.

Dear Ms Collins,

It had been about 15 years since I read one of your books. Thank you for not doing anything less than a full Jackie Collins with this one. Anyone else - anyone - I would condemn the predictable plot, the repetitive vocabulary, the cliched sex scenes, the completely 2-dimensional characters and their hugely stereotyped dialogue. But not you. You are a national treasure and I love you.

Best wishes, and I look forward to the sequel (because don't think I didn't notice how you left a few of the characters fates purposely dangling). Your fan since Hollywood Husbands,
Elizabeth

I'm too old to consider anything I really enjoy a "guilty pleasure", so I must say that reading this book was a pure pleasure! I refuse to feel guilt.

Engrossing, wild characters and plot, total escapism, and I really couldn't put it down.

I probably won't remember much about it in a month, except for the fact that I really was caught up in it! I totally recommend this, if you promise not to feel guilty for enjoying it.

An entertaining book with interesting characters. I enjoyed this story, laughed a lot and cringed a lot too.
Too many huge, enormous and gigantic cocks and dicks mentioned in the book.
My favourite character was Jeremy. What a self-obsessed snub. 🤦🏾‍♀️

Listen for the sizzle!

This is the second Jackie Collins audiobook I have listened to and I will have to say I am always impressed by how much work goes into her audiobooks. Jackie Collins has a complete cast for her audiobook series and you really get a complete feel for all the characters through the voice overs. In The Power Trip readers listen in anticipation as the famous couples are invited on the luxurious Yacht birthday cruise headed for the Sea of Cortez for Bianca, a supermodel and the high profile girlfriend of Aleksandr Kasianenko, a billionaire Russian Oligarch. Some of the characters that intrigue me are the US Senator Hammond Patterson and wife Sierra who continues with her marriage out of fear for her own life. And Luca Perez, a male Latin singing sensation, who is still best friends with his ex-wife, and lives with his jealous, yet destructive older English boyfriend.

What I love about the Jackie Collins audiobooks is how you really get a feel for the characters by the voice-overs and actually find yourself anticipating what each character (with the bonus of Jackie Collins herself) will say and do next. If you like a thrilling murder mystery with sex, backstabbing, and lots of dirty dirty characters, just like a Hollywood movie then you will love this audiobook. Jackie Collins and her cast of character delivers exactly that and a whole lot more. No worries on a dull moment with The Power Trip as the story keeps the reader constantly on the edge. If you are looking to take in this book I would highly recommend the audiobook as you will also fall in love with the full voice cast, which includes the Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Holter Graham and Euan Morton.

As always, Collins offers some mindless downtime but this might be her most ridiculous offering yet. I mean, pirates. I feel that Collins' characters are getting more and more shallow as the years progress (is this a commentary on modern celebrity? I don't think so), and her plots more wafer thin. Personally, I would rather go back to her old school stuff - Hollywood Wives and Lucky - because they always featured at least one redeemable character (nope, didn't even really like the noble Flynn and Sierra) and one could at least pass off the sexism and racism as being of the time.

Well, one doesn't read Jackie Collins for the intellectual challenge.

Enjoyed getting to know the ins and outs of the characters, felt very invested in them. Only reason it’s not five stars for me is because it was a very long build up to the main event and I wanted to know more about what happened to the characters after “The Bianca”

I loved Jackie Collins when I was younger. Gino and Lucky Santangelo are two of my favorite characters ever, and her early books were tightly written and very engaging. The quality of her work slipped a LOT over time, and yet I kept punishing myself by picking them up because I was so hoping she might be able to get her mojo back. This book is another example of how she just never did.

So many problems with this book:

1. It reminded me of the online roleplaying fan fiction I used to write with a bunch of friends (which, admittedly, was lousy... hey, we were youngsters and doing it for fun, not for pay, neither of which Collins can claim for this book). A few paragraphs in one character's POV, then a few more in another character's POV, and constant redundancies in what's being described as each character discusses the same events from their own perspective.

2. The book is 95% data dump, with each character's backstory being described like a case history rather than being woven into the narrative. ("Show, don't tell" is a writing cliche for a good reason.)

3. EVERYONE is described over and over and OVER again by their most striking physical assets. The women all have enormous breasts. The men all have huge packages. The black characters all have gleaming black skin. Ugh.

4. 80% of the dialogue is completely ridiculous. Did Collins ever actually spend any time around real people to hear the way they talk?

5. Constant -- and I do mean *constant* -- repetition in the way characters thought and spoke. "He was Cliff Baxter. Movie star. Cliff Baxter. Confirmed bachelor. Cliff Baxter. People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive." "Nobody was going to mess with Mercedes. Nobody." "Hammond threatened her family. She wasn't going to let him get away with his constant threats. He was threatening her again. He kept threatening her." OMG, let it rest already!

6. Seriously the most inept band of pirates ever.

7. So much ridiculous sex that isn't even sexy. If you're going to write smut, at least give it some description and not just "A few moments later an amazing orgasm occurred." Everything is always a mind-blowing experience that starts with one character giving another character a "long, slow look" or breathing a "long, slow sigh," or taking a "long, slow beat" and ends with someone moaning in "pure, blissful pleasure." That was okay in one book, maybe, but Collins puts those same descriptions in every single book of hers that I can recall.

8. She spends half the book working toward a payoff between two of the characters that never actually comes to fruition. WTF. Is there a sequel that explains that (God, I hope not)?

Despite all this, 2 stars instead of 1 because I have such fond memories of Collins' earlier works. Which is a stupid reason, I know, but there it is.

I thought I'd read this after seeing a 5 star review in my local paper by a (usually) trusted critic. I struggled to get into it until the actual trip, as there were so many characters and the plot didn't seem to be going anywhere fast. I was going to give up on it but am glad I finished it, although its nowhere near as good as Jackie's much earlier work, eg Lucky.

It's mostly a sex romp with a bit of intrigue thrown in for good measure, which is Jackie's trademark, but this one fails to hit the spot, no pun intended! Her earlier works were really good, fast paced and with an air of mystery about them. How times change; and I realise now why I stopped reading her books years ago.

I think this would be okay for a holiday read but that's about all.

I received a copy of The Power Trip by Jackie Collins in exchange for an honest review.

Oh, Jackie Collins is a naughty lady. I just can’t get enough of her books! While I was initially bummed out that I wasn’t going to be visiting Lucky in The Power Trip, I soon got over that qualm. What a juicy tale! There are so many characters and we get a POV from each of them, but in signature Collins style it’s effortless to keep them apart. You never know what one of them is thinking or what the next action is going to be. This is a seriously big book, but it took me less than two days to read. It’s impossible to put down, and the writing is so smooth yet captivating that you can’t help but devour it quickly.

This was the first Jackie Collins novel I've read / listened to outside of the Lucky Santangelo stories. I must say she had some very sterotypical characters: the overly dramatic gay interior designer; the beautiful model who thinks the world revolves around her (and according to her wealthy, married boyfriend, it does); and the pervert politician who treats his wife poorly (but refuses to allow her the divorce she wants as she is the perfect "future First Lady") and sleeps with whomever he desires. The mixing of 6 couples on a luxury yacht, some with interesting connections (both current and in the past) makes for an interesting story--had to keep listening to see what happened next!! I was a bit excited initially that Jackie Collins was narrating until I learned there were multiple narrators on this story, which caused a little disconnect of the characters as the narrators portrayed some of the same characters which made it difficult to follow which character was being referred to. Definitely worth a listen . . . or read!! 8 out of 10 for me.

3.75 stars. After Jackie's last couple of duds, I thought I was done because she had lost her smutty magic. Instead of completely giving up, I decided to just get this one from the library. Happily, this one had the old school Jackie flare. Like all of Jackie's books you have the spoiled Hollywood types based on real stars, this time Taye and Ashley (the UK footballer and designer wife) Cliff (the Oscar winning, will never get married aging star) Luca (the latin gay heartthrob) with his snooty queen boyfriend and Bianca (the black supermodel full of entitlement) all on a fabulous yacht Bianca's boyfriend Russian billionaire Alexandr has chartered. Add the rival mafia's family who sets out to pirate the yacht for revenge. I hated the characters, but in typical Jackie fashion I kept turning the pages to see how they all got their due. If you are looking for a light vacation read, this is it.

I can't help it. I love me some trashy Jackie Collins every so often. Sometimes there is nothing more pleasurable than getting lost in her mindless, gossipy, sex over the top, stories. She makes me laugh out loud at some of her ridiculous characters and scenarios. Once in a while, it is exactly the escape I need. Always a kick to follow the flawed lives of the uber rich and famous. Love it !

I had not read a Jackie Collins book in 20 years and I really enjoyed this book. It's a raunchy and fun story. The great thing about many of Ms. Collins stories is that many of her characters resemble real life celebrities. What fun. There is nothing deep and meaningful in this book, but it was a lot of fun to read and I did like some of the characters and dislike others.

Don't take this review too seriously because I'm clearly not the target audience.
Most of the characters are quite child-like and I'm not really sure who this supposed to appeal to. One good point is that the ending hints at a decent story to come and I imagine the full book is better than this prequel. (Doesn't mean i'ma read it doe)

When Russian billionaire Aleksandr Kasianenko plans an elaborate birthday celebration for his supermodel mistress, Bianca, no detail is overlooked. A custom super-yacht on the mystifying Sea of Cortez, exquisite cuisine, personal tours of private islands, and a finitely detailed guest list of five of the world’s most powerful couples will make Bianca’s thirtieth birthday an historic one. Among the party are UK celebrity footballer Taye Sherwin and his interior designer wife, Ashley; Latin music superstar Luca Perez and his haughty English boyfriend, Jeromy; devious US Senator Hammond Patterson and his unhappily married wife, Sierra; world-renowned journalist Flynn Hudson and his humanitarian-minded friend, Xuan; and well-aged movie star Cliff Baxter, a perpetual bachelor and regular Sexiest Man Alive alum, with his spirited younger girlfriend, Lori. With its star-studded array of passengers and finely-crafted amenities, the yacht’s stage is set as the million-dollar attendees lavish themselves amid the most extravagant glamour money can buy. But trouble finds paradise – or perhaps it never left; Ashley wants revenge from Taye, who made tabloid headlines when he cheated on her; Luca is discovering that Jeromy’s sexual insatiability has led him outside their relationship; Sierra is struggling with the realization of her senator husband’s sexual perversions and personal deceits; Flynn can’t seem to escape the one woman he’s ever loved, while Xuan finds herself in Bianca’s crosshairs; and free-spirited Lori is determined to set Cliff off his path of bachelorhood and onto the road to marriage. Meanwhile for Aleksander, an old enemy is plotting his revenge for past wrongs with the help of a Mexican daredevil and his wily band of pirates. In true Jackie Collins style, this luxurious birthday cruise will soon become the backdrop for an adventure of secrets, lies, sexual exploits, and backstabbing deviancy on the high seas.

If any author can be credited with dominating a genre, Jackie Collins certainly fits the bill. Her books have gone full circle and beyond, often being used to describe their genre rather than the other way around. For fans of the author’s historically sensational combination of glitz and bawdiness, The Power Trip will be a happy journey into the iconic world of Jackie Collins. Her knack for creating outrageous and colorful characters – from the likable to the outright detestable – is in full swing; every guest on the indomitable yacht is defined in detail, making the book play out in the reader’s mind like a boldly imagined film. There are possibly more characters to dislike than there are to like amid The Power Trip, and the unlikable ones are extreme in their villainy. I did, however, find myself connecting strongly to the characters whom quickly became my favorites – determined Sierra and intrepid Flynn – as well as being pleasantly surprised by my growing affection for others – most notably cheeky Cliff and his adventurous girlfriend, Lori. Rumor has it that the celebrity guests were reimagined by Collins based on real-life stars, which adds a certain amount of gossipy intrigue to the book.

The story Collins has dreamed up takes its time unraveling, luxuriating at the beginning before zipping through an exciting final act. The pace she keeps is complimentary to the story and shows her experience as a storyteller. For someone who is so well-versed in her genre, one might expect that Collins’s formula could become predictable in this, her twenty-ninth novel, but her surprises pack a great punch. As expected, The Power Trip pushes boundaries in a way that will either turn readers off or leave them wanting more. Jackie Collins has created a quintessential page-turning adventure of sex, money, and murder that feels like taking a trip away from the winter climbs and into the absolute glamour of summertime.

I love Jackie Collins I really do. She has this amazing ability to make every sentence feel juicy and 500 kinds of a playful type of sexy, making me hang from her book pages. Never vulgar, never boring, never mediocre.

This book is about a group of people that went on a vacation together in the fabulous boat of a Russian billionaire. The group included :

- his gorgeous Naomi Campbell looking girlfriend
- a middle aged Hollywood star in his fifties with his girlfriend
- an international journalist and his co worker
- the journalist's ex girlfriend and her politically involved new boyfriend
- a young English football player and his wife
- and last but not least, the sneaky staff.

As if all the above characters are not enough there is also a murder. Who died? Who shot the gun?

Jealousy, love, fear, adventure and glamour once again done in the unique fashion that only Jackie Collins can achieve.

I loved it.

An average book 2.5 stars. It had the right components to keep you interested, but the content was very predictable and most importantly very superficial. Let us get started on the characters as there were so many different POV's and character lines. Out of the 10 or so characters featured I think I liked 1-2 characters. I didn't mind reading about the characters from an outside perspective but once I started reading their internal dialogue I WANTED TO CLAW MY EYES OUT. It is hard to explain just how bad the dialogue was... It was shallow, brainless, trivial nonsense. Every character felt like one big cliche. The movie star that never wants to get married. The uber-famous model that is the biggest drama queen and only cares about herself. The seedy politician that performs devious activities. Like C'mon did I need to go on any further, the characters were a big let down for me. The story wasn't at all too bad. It had some action, drama, and romance which was delivered as a steady story development. My final thoughts after reading a Jackie Collins novel is to give her one more chance to write a story with some decent character monologues.

A few days ago I was reading the first book of a YA dystopian/Utopian series called Legend. I had been patiently waiting to read this series because I prefer to read books when a series is completed.

Well, read half and I was a tad bored. Then all of a sudden I remembered how I used to love Jackie Collins books. Same with Jacqueline Susan and Judith Krantz. I had to read a book like that I decided. So looking through my library, I picked this book.

Lots of talk about sex. women and men all love to have sex. Most are beautiful some are nasty all compact in a story with some action at the end.

The reviews were not very positive but I decided to give it a go and it was just what I Needed. No horrible dead bodies and sad families of victims of serial killers. No constantly nagging of teenagers with too many emotions but just a simple easy to read no need for using your brains book.

Well finished it this morning. I know I would go even more crazy if I would read a lot of those books but sometimes I need something light and this was the perfect recipe.

i love Jackie Collins, she could teach the author of 50 Shades a lot but this book is not her best. It is good, it is easy to read but it lacks something of the Collins I love so much. Without doubt though she remains an exceptional writer and I love her work but after the promise on the first page, I was disappointed that the story lacked.
I would still recommend it, but it just lacks some of the ingredients of previous novels that make me like her so much. Still, maybe if these authors of so called 'mummy porn' read her they would see the difference in the rap they churn out and the ability to have sex and also be a page turner. Jackie Collins is an A list author.

Firstly I have to say thank goodness this was not another Lucky Santangelo story, I think she has been done to death and I'm well and truly over her. It was good to read a stand alone with a whole bunch of different characters, the usual few self obsessed narcissistic bunch and the few heroes here and there, all extremely beautiful and ruggedly handsome of course. It wasn't as raunchy as some of her previous books, quite tame really. All in all a good easy read with a good epilogue where she gives each character a pretty good if not predictable ending.

So far I must admit I am not overly impressed. I am not one who cringes when hearing cursing and sexual language while listening to a book, but enough is enough! If an idea cannot be expressed without the use of a multitude of curse words, perhaps the idea should be rethought. And too - do all the characters have to be having sex all the time? With pretty much identical descriptions? Please let the last few c.d.'s hold more content!
