Medical director of the world-famous Canyon Ranch Health Resorts, Dr. Mark Liponis presents his extraordinary new that aging and aging-related diseases---including heart disease, cancer, and diabetes---are autoimmune problems, and that a well-managed immune system is the key to healthy aging.
Cutting-edge research makes UltraLongevity the first and only book to explore aging within the context of the immune system, and it will change the way we look at health forever. Starting with a quiz---"How Fast Are You Aging?"---Liponis explains the new science, lays out an accessible and proven 7-step program with an 8-day meal plan, and motivates readers to put the program into practice so that they can keep their minds sharp, become more physically fit, be more resistant to infections and disease, and feel and stay younger than they ever imagined. Through the UltraLongevity program, Liponis promises more than a long life; he promises a long, healthy life.

I did this one on audio b/c I find that when I read a Non-Fiction Science/Medical subject matter book, my brain tends to wander. My eyes glaze over & I’m brought back to being in college when forced to read numerous pages of boring text for class. I find that when I do it on audio I have a better attention span.
I picked this b/c it sounded interesting. Who doesn’t want to know how to learn tips on gaining better health? It was well written & researched. I liked the way the medical science was explained breaking it down using analogies I could follow easily. I learned interesting info on the immune system. the one negative was that it didn't really have so many w/tips on how to lengthen my lifespan.
I got this book for free years ago, and it’s actually not the type of book I would normally read. But I did find it interesting (just the explanations of how the body works) and I wanted to keep reading. The recipes provided for the meal plan are ones I would make even if I wasn’t trying to be healthy.
Perfect for : Personal Use, Professional Reading, Health Library
In a nutshell: This is another book that completely wowed me. The author explains how important our immune system is and how we can work in harmony with it, or ignore it and ultimately age faster and become unhealthy. He then goes on to share seven areas to focus on to improve the function of our immune systems: Breathe, Eat, Sleep, Dance, Love, Soothe and Enhance. I will admit that I have read very carefully from the beginning through the section on breathing, but that I skimmed beyond that as I scored so low on the UltraLongevity Quiz that I felt I needed to really go through the steps carefully. I am now more aware of my breathing and am focusing on changing the way I breathe. I find it amazing that I feel much more calm after paying more attention to this one step for a few days. This is another life-changing book that I hope you will take a look at.
Extended Review: In general, I know that I have an immune system, and I know a few things about how it works, but I didn't realize that I could do things in my everyday life to help support it (other than vitamins, etc). Mark Liponis explains the immune system in easy to understand terms, showing readers how they can live in harmony and support their immune system with easy changes.
Content: The book starts with an UltraLongevity Quiz, which was very eye-opening for me. The author then talks about the science behind the immune system, how it works, what it is made up of, and how it can impact our overall health and aging. The author then goes on to explain that we have the control to improve our immune system so that we are living in harmony with it by addressing 7 areas of our life: Breathe, Eat, Sleep, Dance, Love, Soothe and Enhance. Looking at the list, it seems a bit overwhelming, but the author goes on to provide us with an example day of someone who is actively using the seven-step program, and finishes with a sample menu for eight days, and includes vegetarian suggestions for those who need it.
Format: Easy to read, but seemingly very complete. The author shows us why the immune system is important, and how to support it in our daily life.
Readability: I was amazed at how quickly I read the book. I was so interested in what I was learning that the time simply flew by!
Overall: A very informative book that should help readers to feel and look younger and healthier. After actively working on the first step, I can see how beneficial this book is.
This book starts with a quiz. Twenty-one questions determine how fast you are aging. There are the expected questions about weight, smoking, and exercise, but then there are the unexpected questions about siblings, sex, jokes, and even about the time of year you were born. Once I saw my score I immediately started reading the book.
Just as our country’s defense system would be sorely tested if several invaders attacked simultaneously, so, too, when your body has to deal with many potential terrorists, the opportunities for breakdowns multiply. This confusion leads to malfunction of the immune system, and that malfunction leads to bodily damage.
Please save yourself from wasting time. If you are a person with average common sense you will be able to write this book yourself. You need to breathe, dance, love....wow.I think those who gave a positive review were those who got fascinated by some scientific terms. If you are a person of science this is again not going to charm you. Looking at the CRP protein I diagnose and heal everything. GREAT I did go to the canyon ranch website to see who the author is. They tried to be charming by saying he pursued his wife and internal medicine residency. I totally believe them the book is awful his attention is in love...Love does heal but it doesn't give ultra longevity and i don't expect such a book from a man of science
How to live longer by improving your immune system. There are two main parts to the book, one expaining how the immune system works, the other explaining how to help your immune system work well. The most fleshed out portion of the second section is on how to eat healthily. I found the portion on the immune system good, but because I'm generally already well informed, did not get that much out of the second section. (I already do relaxation techniques, and know what supplements are appropriate for me.) Would recommend if you'd like to learn about the immune system, if you'd like the recipes, or if you are not so well informed on how to live a healthy balanced life.
I'm putting this one aside for awhile. I've read the first few chapters and it does have a lot of good information - but I'm moving my focus to Paul Pritchford's "Healing with Whole Foods" book which tickles my fancy much more. I may pick this one up again some time. I like its focus on emotional/mental/spiritual health along with physical health.
This is not the kind of book I usually read, but I'm glad I read it. It basically reiterated what we know already - eat well, get enough sleep, and exercise. It did have some good, more drilled down info. I'll probably read it again, but...
I would recommend it to people who are interested in these types of books.
I loved learning how our immune system works in detail. It was sound advise to use and really backed up what my BodyTalkBalanceMe.com training has taught me. My favorite quotes are: Synchronization between the breath and the brain transmits rhythmic harmony to the heart. Mindful breathing, as measured by cell activity, is shown to improve the immune system.
This book explains very well how the Inmmune system works and how it can be helped to regain strenght, but the advices are rules that we all know -like avoid stress, eat vegetables, fruits, whole grains, etc, and certain supplments. I expected a little more detailed information but overall I rate it an informative book.
The main idea that stayed with me after reading this book is that inflammation is an underlying cause of a lot of woes, and addressing that idea alone can improve how you feel and function every day. It's certainly true for me.
UltraLongevity looks into chronic disease through the prism of chronic inflammation being the main cause. Although Liponis blames as new entity entirely, the outcome is still the same live a stress free life while eating your veggies/fruit and exercising.
I learned a lot from reading this book about aging and what you can do in your daily life to slow the process....a lot of it I already do thankfully, but there is always room for improvements!
