Enter beautiful, exotic, and secretive Luka Gabor, the motel’s new security guard. He seems to know a great deal about literature, history, and travel but otherwise remains a mystery. An unexpected gem of a story. Moody, tender, with juuust enough strangeness to keep you guessing. It’s really a story about second chances at life.

Aiden Finn (29), a night janitor, is a beautifully written character. He’s been in-and-put of prison for years. Raw, rough around the edges, and aware that he’s on his last shot at getting life right.

“You’re probably never gonna have an average kind of life,” Ms. Simmons said softly, and he realized he’d shut his eyes.

He looked at her. “I know that.”

“But do you know it’s okay? You’ve spent your entire life being… classified.” She tapped his file. “Now’s your chance to decide who you want to be.”

Luka Gabor, a security guard with secrets. He’s elegant, enigmatic, and oddly well-read for someone in his position. He spends a lot of time on his knees around Aiden...so it’s understandable that Aiden feels it’s nothing more than an occasional hook-up.

Ok, let me start by saying that I love Kim Fielding. I loved Brute. She has a way of writing really simple, sweet, but BIG (physically and hearted) characters.

Now, with that being said. This book was...odd. Ummm - I wasn't quite sure where she was going with the different angles of the story. I get that we have 2 very lonely men, each with their own "monsters", trying to make sense out of life. But, it just didn't flow for me.

Aiden and Luka were likable enough as characters...I'd expect this from Ms. Fielding. But, I didn't connect with them as a couple and I really just wasn't feeling it. Kudos for trying to make the "reveal" interesting, but it was fairly obvious from the beginning what the secrets were.

2 stars for the first 80% of the book.
3 stars for the lats 20% of the book.

This is a simple story about an ex-con, Aiden, re-integrating himself into society after being released from prison. He's the night shift janitor at a hotel and lives a very quiet life. He has a parole officer who really believes he can makes positive changes in his life and she pushes him to improve himself.

He meets and begins a torrid affair with the new hotel security guard, Luka, who is a bit of an enigma. There are a few hints along the way as to what he actually is, so the reveal didn't come as any big surprise.

This is just more Aiden's journey to keep his sobriety and expand his life a bit.

Actually, you know, that's not true. We learn quite a bit about Luka and his struggles. He's a rich character in his own right. He has a sad story though.

I liked this, it was quirky and the men were a good fit. Lots of sex here and the reason why is quite interesting. If you're looking for a quick little paranormal read with a bit of twist, look no further.

Aiden, dear Aiden, in and out of prison most of his life, no one has ever believed in him, he certainly doesn't believe in himself, he is fighting his alcohol addiction daily, working as a night custodian. This quote sort of sums him up at the beginning of the story: “There was something wrong with a job if the high points involved cleaning up vomit.”
But, his parol officer believes in him and that is enough for Aiden to start thinking that maybe, maybe he can make it.
Luka is the new night watchman at the motel Aiden cleans at night, to say they hit it off, might not be the right phrasing.
Luka literally blows Aiden's....mind, among other things, every night during their shared break.
He doesn't want Aiden to reciprocate and when Aiden gets up the nerve to ask him out and Luka declines, the sadness and disappointment Aiden feels is so strong, I was feeling for him. He tries and works everyday, just to get through it and stay on course, he's lonely and needs love so badly.
Now, I don't think it will come as surprise to most readers what's up with Luca, the hints are pretty obvious and even Aiden figures it out. Oh and the age-gap tag on this one..yeah, it really applies.
But Luka and Aiden do start seeing each other outside of work and Aiden starts going to a book clubs and when Luka gives him the gift of the next few books on the list , so he can mark them and make notes in his own, new books..*melts*.
We only get Aiden's POV but I felt for Luka too, his long and lonely existence.
There was of course 'an event' that moved it all forward and forced the issue Luka had been avoiding , telling Aiden about his own 'monsters'. And although I had sort of figured it out, the nightly blow jobs do take on a new meaning.
I really enjoyed this story, it was sweet without being overly so, it had a character so flawed but good despite being an ex-con, and seeing him actually feel better about himself and his circumstances was wonderful. Luka too was such a lonely soul, i was so happy he found a man like Aiden, they really fit well. My niggle would be the ending, I'm greedy and like to know how it's all gonna work out, yes, there is a happy ending, but..I can't help but wanting to know how they are going to overcome or deal with the obstacle that stands before/between them.

.....3.5 Stars.....Sweet and cute romance atop a social commentary on the hardships ex-convicts face trying to make a life out of prison.

A lonely vampire falls for a lonely ex-con. The paranormal aspect didn’t really play a huge role aside from making Aiden question Luka’s secretive nature.

I enjoyed it, ‘nuff said.

Wait! What!!
That was it? Where are the next twenty chapters?

I want more Aiden! What an adorable character...
Not to forget the book club, the wonderful Ms. Simmons, the Homer reciting Luka - the story is not finished, no way!
One star less for letting me down...so there!

Original review :

I really like Kim Fielding’s writing style because she puts fresh spins on her stories. Saying that, I don't for one minute think anyone reading this book won't guess the true nature of Luka the security guard (who I personally loved to bits) pretty quickly but at the same time the twist in the tale she puts on his kind in this book is unusual and unexpected. It’s a sexy yet sweet romance between two people who, because of each of their circumstances, don't fit society’s norm but do find love working the night shift in a dingy motel, and it was so enjoyable.

Aiden is a petty crimes ex con and a reject in society’s eyes, but I loved the drive and determination he had to change his lot in life with the help of his kind hearted parole officer, who sees the potential in Aidan to do exactly that. The fact he loves to read and joins a book club is just another endearing trait that makes his character even more loveable! Then when he meets the handsome but mysterious Luka, and their nightly sexy get togethers started up, I found myself desperately wishing their quirky relationship would work because as odd as their relationship seemed, they fitted each other like a glove. Both giving the other exactly what they individually needed. In Lukas case you have to read the book to find out what his needs are, but for Aiden the thing he gains from the new night guard, apart from love of course, is a sense of self respect, an incentive to keep bettering his life and the realisation that his criminal past isn't what truly defines him. Theres a touch of excitement toward the end but essentially this is a story of redemption, hope and true love and I loved watching it all play out. A keeper for sure.

I postponed this for awhile because I wasn't too impressed with the early BJs between Aiden and Luka. Thought this would be one of those that had more sex scenes than plot. It was an okay story for me -- not my favorite from Ms. Fielding.

On one hand, I really liked Aiden and his struggle to find his self worth. I am a sucker for this kind of story. Aiden thought that he was just an ex-con, all he wanted was to keep his night shift job and not fell into the seduction of alcohol. I loved Aiden's parole officer, Mrs. Simmons, and how she believed in him and pushed Aiden to do something more. It was really heartwarming to read Aiden looking for a book club to join and to discuss books with them -- I wish there were more pages about him fulfilling his college plan.

On the other hand, the paranormal aspect was just, uhm, weird. Yes, I knew what Luka was (thanks to clues and reviews). But I didn't know if this truly added something to the story. I mean, if this was a contemporary story, it would still work. Maybe even better for me, because then it would a true personal journey of Aiden with helps of friends, you know? With Luka being a vampire, I ended up thinking, oh, so Aiden will be confined to night life only? And what will happen when he grows old and Luka is not?

I could have done without the paranormal aspect entirely because OMG the rest was so powerful. I'm a HYOOOGE proponent of automatically restoring voting rights to felons but I'm also frustrated by the whole system in general making it so, so hard for those who've done their time to turn their lives around without significant help. (Help that is continually eroded from governmental budgets , leaving the services to be filled by religious institutions.)

This book does such a damned good job of showing how difficult the situation can be even for someone who wants to avoid future jail time, who's making a full faith effort. No, it's not every ex-felon's experience, but it's a good amalgamation. And not everyone can perform a random act of heroism to give them some respectability; so while our MC is rewarded for bravery with a promotion, it's also mentioned that he got a significant raise BEFORE that for doing a good, thorough job & being a dependable employee. I loved that little addition.

May I suggest that if you want to enjoy this book, truly enjoy it, that you don't read the reviews first. Some reviewers have decided to throw Luka's secret out there with no hide spoilers.

This ebook totally surprised me. I started out thinking I wasn't going to like it but somewhere, somehow these characters just grabbed me and I fell in love with them. Not having read any reviews it took me a while to figure out what Luka's secret was, at least I had that luxury, as it is pivotal to the reading experience. I'm so glad I didn't find out Luka was before I decided to read this book. I really like this book, but if I had known I would have had to be dragged kicking and screaming into reading this book. Not that I didn’t like the author a lot, I just really don’t usually like books with that sort of creature in them.

I really liked Aiden, and appreciate that the author didn't treat him like a brainless thug, or a helpless victim. He may have had a rough beginning, he might have made bad choices, but he is far from stupid. I like how hard he is trying to change, not for anyone else, but for himself. I really liked Luka as well. He was kind, caring, and I love how much he supported Aiden without being controlling or overbearing. The secondary characters added so much to the story. His parole officer was wonderful, and I like that it wasn’t just about Luka making Aiden better, but about Aiden making connections, and finding the support he needs to change his life. I like that the choices he made in the past will still make things hard, but that it isn’t an excuse for him to do nothing either.

The plot was simple, and I liked that there was no big misunderstanding that drove the characters apart. Aiden does have to think after he finds out the truth about Luka, but there was no artificial conflict, or jealous ex to add tension or drama. I liked that the supernatural elements never took over the story, and that the characters growth and development stayed front, and center. The mythology was different than any other I read, and I liked that. Luka was much more relatable to me because of it.

Overall another fun, character driven story, from what is fast becoming one of my favorite authors.

I preorder this book and of course read it immediately when it was available.
Probably my 2 stars is the result of so much expectation... Aiden, ex convicted trying very hard to don't fuck up and go to jail again. He want, badly, to have a job, resist his alcohol dependence and finally start his live. In his job he will know the irrestible security guy, Luka... And things will (almost boring) go on in a predicted way.

It's not my first book from this writer. I read and liked (a lot):
Stasis, Flux, Equipoise (books of the same series)
and the standalone Brute, Speechless and Good Bones.
Why I'm adding a list of other books? To tell you all of those were 5 stars in my modest opinion. I loved all, the characters and plot. Even if In Night Shift I must admit there is something new , I was not enthusiast reading it.
Maybe because I wish less sex scenes and more plot?
Maybe I had too high expectations?
Maybe I didn't laugh with the attempts of humor?
Maybe I was angry with the inconclusive end, hoping a prologue to say something when FINALLY there was story?
Maybe, it's just me, and you may have a great time reading it.

Unfortunately I didn't enjoy it, and can't give more than 2 stars. And also tell you maybe this is not a book from this writer I would recommend as your first reading.

4 Hearts

Review written for MM Good Book Reviews

http://mmgoodbookreviews.wordpress.com/

I was very excited reading this book and it was absolutely fascinating. The whole idea was so invigorating it made it quite a joy for me to read; in the end though I wavered between three or four hearts.

This book starts with a powerful kick; a troubled ex-con trying to make it in a world where there aren’t many opportunities for him left. A bit his circumstances in life, a bit the wrong choices, a bit the fact that there aren’t many choices to begin with and Aiden is in his last crossroad. His has to take the hard path and keep himself clean or get lost in that abyss of nothingness forever and simply await his death. It’s his last chance but damn it hard when you have no dreams and no expectations.

That is until he meets the new security guard at work. Luka is, well hot. No better word for him. Luka is sexy; Luka takes one look at Aiden and he practically devours him without asking anything back. But Luka is a living mystery. He has secrets he can’t share, but that doesn’t keep Aiden from falling for his sexy co-worker, even if he has no expectation that a guy like Luka will stay with him in the long-term.

So the story up until 80% of this book was plain amazing. The characters both were unique, but as we read this book from Aiden’s PoV we get to know him much better. His fears, his feelings, his inner monster. Everything about this character screams “help me”, yet he must help himself. I loved Aiden, really, truly loved him. I loved the fact that the author chose a “flawed” character for her protagonist. It’s hard not to feel at least compassion for him and well, let’s say that his whole bad-ass description has its allure too.

The interactions between the men are also very charming. They start with a hot scene in the break room and slowly take those steps toward dating and having something more solid. In the meanwhile Lukas helps Aiden stand on his feet by simply being by him, giving him incentive to stay strong. And when they fall in love, it’s done beautifully in a smooth way that doesn’t grate.

As I said awesome book up until 80%.

However Lukas’ exposure somehow threw me. His “alter ego” did not fascinate me as much. The information about his “other” life was somehow vague and the very end felt a bit rushed, abrupt. As if the book suddenly exceeded the word count and had to end. That last 20% of the book nearly killed me, I was so enthralled with my read that it somehow came as a shock, hence my wavering between three and four hearts.

But thing is, I did love this book ending notwithstanding. I found it remarkable and a fresh breath in the choice of character, not to mention a very nice execution and writing. So I’ll not hesitate to recommend this to those who love strong protagonists who go through the hard way in life and still don’t give up; those who love a good romance; and those who want a bit of vamp and blood in their reads.

Have fun, I sure did.

This was okay, a nice little read, but lacked a certain depth. I didn't feel a ton of chemistry between our MC's, or understand the deeper emotions that developed since we didn't see them have any deeper conversations.

Despite us learning (through infrequent and vague allusions) that Aiden spent his youth on the streets, hooking when necessary, and in and out of jail with at least one rape, none of that ever comes up. I appreciate that Aiden doesn't cry 'victim' or let it drag him down, but if we're supposed to believe they fell in love, I want Luka to learn some of that.

The narration on the audio version was okay, good pacing. My only complaint is that Aiden's voice didn't seem gruff enough. At times it even seemed slightly feminine (maybe because it was too similar to Ms. Simms, his parole officer), which didn't fit with the tough ex-con image he claimed to portray.

Also, the paranormal aspect didn't really bring anything to the story. It wasn't an afterthought, per se, because there were clearly correlations made between Aiden's 'monster' of alcohol abuse and Luka's mysterious 'monster'. The premise of the story doesn't quite work without it , but it just fell flat for me.

Certainly not my favorite Kim Fielding book (be still my heart, Brute), but this had a different goal. It's light and thoughtful and easy, and I'd recommend it (and the audio) if that's what you're looking for.

*sigh*

The premise is lovely. The execution is lazy. Simply using the word "monster" repetitively and hearkening back to the concept of internally harbouring such does not illustrate the idea of two men with monkeys on their backs/inner demons/undesired parts of themselves finding a way to prevail against the ugly inclinations of these and finding love.

The story is largely tell and remains, ever so disappointingly, on the surface. Not much thought or exquisite emotion roused hereby despite the promise of the blurb. On that note, I take umbrage also at the blurb omitting the paranormal element herein. I get the 'surprise' effect but I'd like to choose my genre.

Alas, I'm starting to believe that Alaska may have been an exception from this author.

I absolutely loved that Aiden joined a book club. I love characters who break stereotypes and rough-and-tumble Aiden captured my heart pretty quickly.

I inadvertently learned Luka's secret right after I started reading the book, so I wonder how long it would have taken me to figure it out on my own. But in any case, I enjoyed his character as well and loved that both men were able to show each other their vulnerabilities.

Kim Fielding did a remarkable job pulling me into Aiden's surroundings. I haven't known anyone like Aiden in real life, yet I felt I knew and understood him well.

This was a very creative take on a popular sub-genre.

Aiden is an ex-con doing a menial job as a night janitor. He doesn't have high hopes of getting any further in his life, but his parole officer is very supportive of him getting ahead.
Luka is the fill-in security officer at the motel that Aiden works for. He has his secrets, but he falls for Aiden. He doesn't want to frighten Aiden away, so he holds back until a would-be robber comes in and shoots Aiden. Secrets are revealed.

This was a great short read. It was engaging and sexy with very likable characters. I keep getting these books with potential spoilers but I will do my best to review it spoiler free.

Aiden is trying to put his life in order. He’s an ex-con with an addiction but he’s been given one last chance on the outside. His parole officer gets him a janitor job for a hotel. Aiden doesn’t mind the job and he’s kind of resigned to his place in life. His story is a sad one and Aiden hasn’t ever had anyone to tell him he’s worth anything. You name it he’s probably been through it.

His life changes the night a handsome replacement security guard shows some interest in him. Yeah, it’s just physical at first but it’s the highlight of his pathetic existence so he’ll enjoy it while it lasts. Luka, the security guard, seeks him out every night during his break to give him a release. Soon, Aiden becomes attached to Luka but how could the beautiful intelligent Luka want anything more from him? Why does he want him anyway? It’s frustrating because Aiden doesn’t have the best social skills and Luka is surrounded in mystery. Is Luka using him and what can he be hiding that’s worse than Aiden’s past?

I’m a big fan of Kim Fielding and while this wasn’t my favorite of hers. It was different from anything I’ve read of hers. I loved that it wasn’t at all what I expected from her and I was pleasantly surprised. I think she has a way of getting me deep in the mind-set of her characters so you just can’t help but be transported into whatever is happening in the story. Through Aiden we are shown just how hard the struggle of setting your life straight after parole is.

I figured out Luka’s secret fairly quickly but the suspense of waiting for Aiden to find out was so good it didn’t matter. The characters were lovable and their past struggles just endeared them to me more. Both men led lives of solitude until they found each other so they appreciate what they’ve found in their connection. This is definitely worth picking up. It’s quick, sexy and intriguing.

I loved Aiden and was rooting for him the whole story...loved that he joined a book club and was able to get his life back on track after prison. And I loved Luka, nice surprise to see who he really is, but I absolutely enjoyed the two of them together. I definitely wouldn't mind reading more about these two!

Night Shift is well written but lackluster. It’s a very short story, a MM romance with paranormal elements. The characters are likable but somewhat cliché. Aiden Flinn is the ex.con with a good heart who had a hard life and is struggling to reintegrate into society and build a healthy life. His love interest Luka Gabor is your stereotypical….well that’s where the paranormal comes in; but I have to add: Luka is stereotypical for a 1930’s representation…before the concepts of evolve and adapt became popular.

Aiden and Luka meet working night shift at The Snooze-Inn. Aiden is working there as the custodian when he is pleasantly surprised to find Luka filling in for the regular security guard. Aiden isn’t good with people despite his desire for connection with others; but Luka is pretty direct and gets right down to business with breakroom blowjobs – which for Aiden is another pleasant surprise. Aiden wants a real relationship with dating and shared activities and sex outside of the breakroom; but things go slowly because Luka has lots of SECRETS, *wink, wink*.

Aiden has a parole officer who really believes in him. Apparently despite his penchant for non-violent crimes, he really is a very bright guy. With Ms. Simmons encouragement he tames his monster (i.e. curbs his alcoholism), joins a book club reading the Classics and thinks about ways to make a better life for himself. He’d like Luka to be part of that life and Luka wants that too; but Luka has his own demons to overcome (and no, he is not a demon). The boys are very cute together, they are a good match, they have boring sex but they like it and a nice HFN (*wink, wink*).

4.5 stars. This is a single point-of-view novella; the main character has had a rough life, but he is trying to turn his life around despite sparse resources and a self-image very much a work in progress. If you've ever read this author's stuff, you know his love interest will be... different. I'm glad I read it. I appreciated the juxtaposition of intelligence and rough handling, because I have met a person or two who were similar, and always I wished they'd gotten the help early that they needed to thrive--and yet... Aiden's past, and the current circumstances, were critical to his acceptance of Luca, and that, of course is the underlying theme. Our experiences affect our choices. Of course they do.

I think the ending was good but maybe could've been great. But this was well worth my time. <3

I was skeptical going into this read, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the “why” Aiden spent time in prison. But as I was beginning to settle into the read, it drew me in and I must say it was surprisingly good. It was nothing like I was expecting, well; I must admit I had to reevaluate my thoughts and prejudice against ex-cons.

Aiden had to battle his own personal demons, he understands that he paves his own path in life, and he is slowly but surely making all the right chooses for himself with a great support system. I had the impression that Aiden felt less than, because of the choices that he made; his self-worth took a dive down the dark abyss. It was great seeing him building his life back up and with it his confidence.

Luka worked the night shit as a security guard, I was worried about his intensions, he held on to his secrets.

”I am sorry. This is not fair to you. I have… so many secrets.”

I hate secrets… But in the end he captured me

Nice romance between an alcoholic ex-con, struggling to make his way in alcohol-free non-criminal life, and a vampire, overwhelmed at falling in love after all this time and not wanting to lose it.

Thankfully, Aiden's challenges were not glossed over. We witness several meetings with his parole officer -- fabulous woman! -- and there's discussion of how he's technically breaking parole living where he does, but he can't afford any better and his PO knows this.

Luka and Aiden's connection, while fast, felt very real to me. Both of them had their own anxieties over it, but I was so happy they found each other. And that they both know it's a work in progress and the future holds challenges.

A good short work I recommend to any lover of MM romances with a paranormal twist.

This was an all around lovely and even interesting read, but it won't become a favourite of mine. The interesting parts are not so much about the paranormal than telling the story from a POV of a non-traditional romantic hero. Aiden is an ex-con and recovering alcoholic taking first steps into "normal life". I always adore Kim Fielding's heroes for not being these bossy, rich douch...success stories that are quite common (and I most often loathe). Everyone can guess Luka's big secret but it makes sense that Aiden's thoughts don't go there that easily. He is living a day (or night) at a time, quiet life without fantastical speculations.

I didn't tag this with what Luka is, although I feel like if you've read any PNR and look at the title of the book....

I went through my library and borrowed every Kim Fielding book that was also fantasy and have enjoyed all of them.

I actually really enjoyed this one, because I haven't read a story about a parolee getting back on his feet, and finding reasons to stay out of prison. Luka didn't hurt, and I loved that Aiden was a reader, too!

I found this an enjoyable afternoon diversion. ;)
