Serves Me Right

Rate this book
This is the second part of Sarah Miles's memoirs. While at RADA, Sarah made a dream list and to her amazement began ticking it off with relish. During the filming of "Wuthering Heights" she had an affair with Laurence Olivier. But keeping the relationship secret began to take its toll, and her relationships with her other lovers - James Fox, Willie Donaldson and Nicol Williamson - fell apart one by one. As she became more of a recluse, she met Robert Bolt, whom she later married.

Interesting for its gossip and revelations about famous stars/movies she was in.She writes well and openly but as I didn't know all of the stage plays/movies I skimmed most of the book.Still enjoyable for her honesty and freshness.

Actually rather interesting and pretty well written. Sarah seems to have focussed on her personal life, rather than her film career in this book. An enjoyable read.

A very entertaining read. She had such a topsy turvy life and seemed to attract unbalanced people.I could do with less about her animals and in particular about her son.

She was married twice to Robert Bolt. She made a movie called "Term of Trial" with Laurence Olivier and had a long term affair with him which ended when she married Robert Bolt - a conscious choice on her part to be true to Robert. There was a dark side to Sarah's life involving three unbalanced people who took advantage of her kind and gentle nature. Two eventually committed suicide and one was murdered during the filming of "The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing". She is passionate about dogs and horses. Sarah found much happiness with Robert Bolt who was the screenplay writer of "Ryan's Daughter", a movie based on Madame Bovary, "Dr. Zhivago", and "Laurence of Arabia". I have purchased several copies of "Ryan's Daughter" - one to loan, one I loaned out and can't remember to whom, and one to keep. I watch it every couple of months, which more or less explains why I wanted to read her autobiography.

Well, she may not be the world's greatest prose stylist and she'll make you cringe from time to time with her talk of Robert Bolt's "squashy bits" etc, but Miles has some great stories to tell about some interesting people and she tells them well. This is a highly readable book and the author comes across as surprisingly down-to-earth, self-deprecating and likeable.
