Scott Edward Hamill’s Robert Did It follows divorced New Yorker Evan’s escape from the city, which results in far more drama than he anticipated. The impromptu purchase of a deceased artist’s house leads Evan to also inherit the doll that caused the artist’s mental breakdown and death.
A unique aspect of this text is the fact that lies within the fiction; the author has built up a complex and gripping story based on a doll that currently sits in Fort East Martello Museum in Key West Florida. Hamill was inspired by the ‘Robert the Doll’, the true story of an artist from Key West Florida driven insane by the idea that his childhood toy was alive and possessing him.
With touches of both emotion and humour to ground the characters, Hamill draws on history, urban myth, song lyrics and proverb to weave this eerie tale of obsession and unwavering loyalty. With a striking cover image, featuring a doll created by Charley Oxenburgh, and lyrics from Jonathan Coulton’s ‘Creepy Doll’, Hamill brings Robert the Doll back to life in a book that will grip readers from the very first page.
