Sometimes the ones you love the most are the hardest to save.

Ever since Hawk Shifter Ash suffered near fatal wounds in a Raven attack, he has slumped into a deep depression. Now unable to walk, let alone shift, he has lost his spark for life and his friends and loved ones fear they will lose him forever. Desperate, they think that the only one who can give him the will to live is Doc Featherstone, the one man that Ash has ever shown any interest in. The problem is Doc Featherstone has returned to his family to recover from his own wounds from the attack.

Bobcat shifter, Joshua Featherstone has harbored a secret attraction for the spunky Hawk shifter for a long time. But, he has kept his distance, afraid that their age difference would be too big to overcome. But, once he hears that Ash is in dire need of his help, Joshua runs back to the coalition. Will he make it in time? Or has Ash turned to the darkness forever.

So I didn't DNF. I should've but I didn't. I was close but I flew this wounded duck till the very end. *sigh* It sucked. I didn't like it. My problem: Doc Featherstone. What kind of "hero" leaves the person who took six (count 'em ... SIX) bullets and lost the use of his legs to save your sorry ass? Um, a pretty shitty one, in my book.

Ash had the hugest crush on Doc "Joshua" Featherstone forever. Joshua had been nothing but mean and condescending to Ash. Despite this, when Joshua's life was in danger, Ash used his body to cover Joshua, taking six bullets - two near his spine - that cost him the use of his legs. Afterwards, Joshua took off going home to "recover." Did he call to check up on Ash? No. Did he send a get-well card? Uh-uh. He quietly sat by the fireplace sipping whiskey. That's where he was when Shane found him and dragged him back to the coalition.

Upon arrival at the coalition, Joshua immediately started in on Ash. Why aren't you eating? Why aren't you going to rehab? You know what, asshole?!? Back the f*ck off! While Ash was pissed off at first, he forgave Joshua (sans an apology) in about two effing pages. Argh! I'm sorry but Joshua was a ginormous coward and an asshole of epic proportions. I gave him a chance. I read through the entire book but he failed to redeem himself in my opinion. I loathed him and I couldn't stand that Ash went ga-ga over him with nothing more than a Here, eat this jello; I'm not leaving this time. Fuck that. I've cut the characters in this series a lot of flack because ... let's face it, it's PNR; they're shifters and this is obviously fantasy land. But Joshua was the antithesis of heroic in my book. He took no responsibility for being a pussy and running away. He didn't apologize or anything. I simply couldn't. Stand. Him.

On another note, SH is upping the in-your-face violence factor and I, for one, am not a fan.

No doubt, the Lost Shifters series is formulaic: two shifters are sad/defective until they find each other; something happens to challenge their relationship or someone's well-being (i.e., one of them gets hurt); they realize it's true wuv and walk off into the sunset. Lather ... rinse ... repeat. After 23 (count 'em twenty-f*cking-three) rounds of this, it's grating.

Bottom-line: I couldn't stand this book because I loathed Doc Featherstone. I'm running on fumes with this series. Only one more to go and I'm done.

I'm almost certain that I've never, in my entire life, read twenty-five books of a series. And, yet, here I am with 'Doc Featherstone's Return' in Stephanie Hecht's 'Lost Shifter' series. I realize that I've said it many times, but I was very excited to read this installment. For many reasons, but the biggest is that Doc has been in so many of the previous books and I wanted to hear his story. I mean, what makes him so grumpy and short-tempered with everyone?

At the end of the previous installment, the Ravens got inside the coalition and a lot of damage was done before they were successfully defeated. Both Ash and Doc (Joshua) were injured, and Joshua went home to his family to heal. Ash, however, is convinced that Joshua just wanted to get away from him, especially since the man has made Ash's life a living hell since Ash came to the coalition. Ash jumped in front of the bullets heading towards Joshua, the least the man could do would be to thank Ash, not disappear without a word. Of course, it no longer matters because Ash knows there's no hope of him ever walking or being able to shift again. Granted, he's refusing to partake in his recovery, so it's no wonder he still can't use his legs.

When Shane shows up at Joshua's family home to convince him to return to the coalition and help Ash, even though they all know how much Joshua "hates" the younger man, Joshua can't say no. Which is why Mitchell sent my boy, Shane, in the first place. Joshua is a bobcat shifter and while the coalition would have no qualms with him mating Ash, a Hawk shifter, Joshua's family would and he'd have to sever all ties with them. So, when Joshua returns to the coalition and the infirmary, he and Ash have got some things to work out. And, I'm not telling whether any of it was explosively hot. You can guess, though. *grins*

I was very happy with Ash and the Doc's story. They each really needed the other in their life and both deserved a happy ever after. Now I have book twenty-six to look forward to.

Wow, this book was… a typical Hecht book as it seems. I thought this woman would at least have some ups and downs but this book definitely did not help in that regard.
Originally I wanted to read it because this one featured a "Native American" (Hecht has the tendency to make her characters act like Americans but at the same time claim that they are not humans, something she never managed to reconcile or even make believable) but that fell flat since the character is nothing like that; and as usual doesn't fit the picture on the cover.
It is plain and boring, the characters are over the top and go from zero to hero in less than a few seconds, especially Ash does, I would go so far as saying that the guy is bipolar but not even that can be applied here.
The author constantly tries to make everyday stuff that every halfway smart person would have figured out already look like the work of a genius. Not to mention that everything is totally predictable, well if you care about thinking about this sort of thing that is. I knew Ash would be able to walk again despite his injuries being so severe, I knew Doc would be the one to top Ash, can't be anything else in a Hecht book, Ash is a twink and also younger than Doc, so Doc must be the top. I could, and did, skip pages just to be sure and BOOM there it was just like I predicted. I saw the pseudodrama coming, I saw that the two being together would be no big deal etc. etc.
I had no desire to read this book any further; there was simply nothing to gain from it in any way.

I know what to expect from this series, I really do, but I can’t help feeling disappointed. Normally I will fall in love with at least one if not both MC, but this time neither Ash or Doc drew me in. They were both a little too whinny for me.

I can’t help but feel this series has also undergone too much of a change. I’m pretty sure when it first started, shifters were hard to kill due to them basically healing once they shift, now the last few books have had shifters dying left right and centre, not to mention they now take weeks or longer to heal, but maybe I’m confusing these shifters with others or maybe I’m just remembering wrong lol.

On a good note for me, the sex was limited to the final couple of chapters lol.

Despite all my negatives though I’m not prepared to give up lol. I want to read Kallen’s story.

Oh, are you kidding me? The doc is only ten years older than the very youthful Ash? I think the author forgot that half of the original cast of characters is in their forties at the very least. And the doc was never ever giving off vibes of being younger than, say, Mitchell. At all. Whatever happened to the slow aging of shifters? Make use of it, dammit.

And the doc is a useless jerk. Why is it usually the dominant tops who end up being jerks in these stories?

Seriously, this is idiotic and there’s no two ways about it. I’m sick and tired of this repeating “conflict” of denying the mating for the most stupid reason ever (usually family obligations) and then only needing one simple conversation and stern talking-to to do a one-eighty.
It’s not romantic. It’s annoying and not even slightly credible.

The amount of words used wrong… I just… Ugh.

I am so unimpressed that it’s reaching negative numbers.

I really liked Ash when he was introduced. I even liked him after he got hurt and lashing out. Then...something changed and I didn't like the story anymore. :(

In the end, it ended okay, but I didn't like the change.

Hate to say it, but there wasn't a whole lot happening in this book so it was a little on the dull side for me. I wasn't overly fond of Ash and Joshua either, plus the plot felt like it was just regurgitated from previous storylines of other couples who were in a similar situation. Bummer.

I haven't read any of the other books in this series, so I was kinda lost here. But I wanted to read the healing/comfort aspect in this book. It was ok, nothing spectacular or new. Just ok. Recommended if you are already a fan of the series, otherwise, I'd say you can skip this one.

This review is for all of the Lost Shifters, Wayne County Wolves, and Assassin's Loyalty books since they are all interconnected and I read them back-to-back pretty much nonstop over a 10 day period. If I have anything to say about a particular book I'll add it under this bulk review. First, I'd like to mention these are more like novellas than books but they have the same underlying theme and pretty much continue where the last left off but with a different couple.

Everything starts out with the Lost Shifters. To summarize there was a war between the feline shifters and the raven shifters. 20 years or so before the first book there was an all out slaughter in which hundreds of feline homes were attacked and burned down all of the occupants believed to be killed. Turns out that the babies and toddlers that were assumed lost were not. They were hidden within the human foster care system for the most part. I won't say how because that'd be a big spoiler. In addition to foster care some kids were sold into slavery and that's where the whole assassin thing comes in. A couple of the main characters marry into the wolf pack so that's where those books come in as well.

Pros: Since the books are so short there are no long drawn out boring details or general angst. There's usually only one sex scene although it's normally long as hell. Which makes the fact some people shelved these as erotica confusing. I liked the world building and even though there were times I think a little more info might have been nice it never detracted from the story or left me confused. Most of the relationships were a sort of love at first sight thing. Or maybe lust or obsession? Despite this the shifters all seem adamant that's not a thing that happens. There wasn't one character I didn't like. My favorite character was Shane and he must have been the author's as well since he got a few extra books and a side series Shane's Chronicles. There's no big end battle or anything but the last book Baily's 9th Life does pretty much tie things up nicely. I think if I'd been reading the series when they were released I'd be a bit miffed because that book didn't come out until a few years later if you weren't reading the assassins books. Also, these books all have some really funny moments and/or dialog.

Cons: The last several books didn't appear to have been edited at all. If if wasn't for the fact that I was so invested in the overall story arc I would have quit reading them. Things like sent instead of scent and too instead of to they instead of them and random wrong words completely. There were also a couple of times that things were said/thought almost verbatim in different parts of a book as if the author forgot she'd already put that info in there already. At the start of the series, they state that all feline shifters are bisexual but at some point the author must have forgotten that detail because suddenly there are gay shifters and homophobia and all this hate. Which brings me to my next con, the themes of the different books started to repeat. Suddenly all these shifters had been thrown out of their previous pack or coalition or human home for being gay. And throughout this huge series of books there was only one straight couple. Like not even a straight friend or whatever. Even the females were all lesbians. It was just kinda unrealistic especially with the whole gay hate thing going on. Usually there's at least a few couples or friends or something on the periphery in gay romances especially in a world this huge. Which brings me to my final con, I had a hard time remembering who was who and what there story was after awhile especially if they weren't mentioned much in previous books. I wish there had been some sort of glossary to review.

Despite the cons, I would still recommend these books. All-in-all I really enjoyed them and was dreading the end although the editing in the last few books really had me also looking forward to the end if I'm being honest.

The Lost Shifters series is definitely one of my favorite series that I follow. I enjoy watching these characters interact, fall in love and work hard to beat the bad guys that are always threatening the greater good. Ms. Hecht continues to write likeable, unique characters and the stories themselves are always fast-paced, highly addictive reads.

I admit I’ve been waiting (im)patiently for this book! Like many of you, I’ve followed Doc and Ash’s story for some time now. The sexual tension between them has always been smokin’ hot and I had a feeling once they finally gave into their feelings for each other that it was going to be special.

Whew! Like in previous books, the sizzling chemistry between these two men practically smoked up my computer screen. What I thought was special about this book in particular was how both men really get to know one another. Yes, they’ve had a intense attraction for each other, but in all reality, they really know little about each other. I enjoyed watching them form a true friendship and bond between them. I truly felt that Doc and Ash really came to love and respect each other. Throughout the story, each man really has to make some hard decisions about their future together, and I thought Ms. Hecht did an excellent job at portraying this without it being over the top.

Another thing I loved about this book was how much I really came to care about Doc and Ash. I liked their strength, honor and they are all around likeable, interesting men. Although, I’ve enjoyed and loved all of these books, Doc Featherson’s Return is one of my favorites in this series. I loved it so much, I hated to see the book come to an end, but thankfully, I know Ms. Hecht will have Doc and Ash have appearances in future books, so I’m happy about seeing them again in the future.

There are 21 books in the Lost Shifters series. Although these books could probably be read alone, I highly recommend reading these books in series order. Once you get started on this series, you’ll be hooked and will fall in love with these characters as much as I have! If you’re looking for a fast-paced, fun, sexy and sheer delight of a shifter book, then Doc Featherstone’s Return is definitely the book for you! Highly Recommended!

The Lost Shifters series in book order are:

Primal Passion
A Feral Christmas
Savage Awakenings
Carnal Intentions
A Wicked Caress
Ruthless Pursuit
A Tempting Distraction
A Shifter Christmas
An Assassin’s Touch
Shane’s Fury
Riley’s Regret
Ranger’s Folly
Chance’s Vindication
Russell’s Reversal
Fangs, Fur and Snowballs
A Very Shaney Valentine’s Day
When Tatum got Bit by a Spider
Shane’s Inner Anger
A Christmas for Ava
Ackley’s Savior
Doc Featherstone’s Return

This is one character in the Lost Shifter series that I was looking forward to reading about. From the first Lost Shifter book, I absolutely fell in love with Doc Featherstone. His grouchy disposition, horrible bedside manner, and all around grumpiness intrigued me. Under his entire attitude, you could see he is loyal to the feline coalition, its leader Mitchell and the shifters whose lives he saves. The Doc uses his attitude to turn away Ash, a hawk shifter and his mate. His reasons for turning away his mate are really quite sad: his age (Doc feels that he is a little too old for Ash) and his family obligations (Doc’s wealthy family wouldn’t approve of him mating a male and another shifter breed as he is expected to carry on his family’s bloodline). An attack on the feline coalition HQ changes everyone’s lives as both Ash and the Doc struggle to cope with the mental and physical scars that the attack has left behind. Left paralyzed from the attack, Ash is really struggling to find a reason to live, let alone walk. Doc realizes that he is the key to bringing Ash out of his depression and giving him a reason to live. It’s in doing this, that Doc’s ability to really overcome his fears and let go of his family’s expectations of him which frees him to love his mate. I would have to label Doc Featherstone as one of my favorite characters. His snarky attitude and sharp tongue is a front to hide the fact that he loves and respects the men and women of his coalition. A few editing mishaps are common in her stories, but not so much that it made the story unreadable and did not in any way deflect my overall enjoyment of the story. This is part of a series that should be read in sequential order to follow the storyline. Mz. Hecht did a good job with this story. I’m looking forward to reading more about my favorite type of animals: felines.

The story is about Featherstone, who is a bobcat shifter and the lead doctor if the coalition, and Ash, a hawk shifter. From the las book after the attack Ash became depress because not only can he not walk or shift but Featherstone left without saying a thank you for taking the bullet by trying to safe his life, and the reason he feels that way is because he has feeling for the Doc but is not answer back. Instead he left him alone and wishing that he could die because he has nothing to live for. Jacyn, Mitchell, and Dean are worry about him and decided to bring Featherstone back because he might be the one to safe him. When Featherstone saw he decided to do everything in his power to make sure that Ash can walk and shift again so he can be his old self again, even if it mean that he has to fight the attraction that he feel for Ash to do so. Will Featherstone save him or is Ash doom to be in that chair for as long as he live.

Every since Featherstone was first introduce I been wondering when he will get his own story and hear it is. While I was hoping for more because he is a favorite of mine but I this is okay consider its long for the making of it. I love Ash the moment I say him, he has this whole my pace vibe of him and its not afraid of saying whats on his mind which make him the perfect mate for the Doc, because he need someone that say it as it is and won't follow the doctor order, unless when he is injure or in bed *wink wink*. When I read who is the one going to bring the Doc back to the coalition I was jumping with jot because it was none other then Shane. Even the Doc, who will only listen to the leader and no one else has to say yes because there will be conscience if said no. I also love that Shane was to one to give a good kick to the Doc for being a jerk and go to your man because that is where your happiness is.

Overall it was a good book to read but like I said I wish there were more to it but I'll take what I get.

I love Stephani Hecht, I love the Lost Shifters, I love how simple and good feeling all the shifter books are. For whatever ever reason though there are a few installments in the sereis that just doesn't do it for me. One is Ranger's Folly and the other one is this one.

Doc Featherstone can't fall for a hawk shifter because his family already has plans for him involving a female bobcat (sound familiar?) Ash the talkative hyper field medic loves him and takes a bullet for him in the last book. Ash is now paralyzed from the waist down and has stopped trying to live. Doc has gone back home to heal and to run away from his crush on Ash.

Ok so what I liked
- we get to see some Shane so what's not to like?
- we get to see Ash and he was one of my favorite hyperactive characters
- we get to see some of Mitchell and Dean (we rarely see Dean)

What was just alright
- I didn't like Doc Featherstone's character, he was too wishy washy with his feelings, you don't go from caring about your family and it's ancestry to throwing it out the window. While I agree that love should conquer all I just felt like the father was this semi villain and then bam one pone call resolved it all
-Ash was healed too quickly the angst, the anger it all just seemed to vanish over the course of a day
- I really didn’t like what happened to Scarlet

All in all not my favorite but Stephani Hecht is still a go to for my easy love story. I do have a request, (yes yes always more Shane but…) I would like to see a story with Andrew Owen and Shane again, Andrew’s book was my first Lost Shifters book and I miss him and Vapor.

I LOVE Ash. Doc...well...not so much lol. I don't hate him and he definitely grew on me in this one but it took a bit to warm up to him. I've been curious about Doc since day one and I wish we'd explored his character a bit more.

Personal rant: I'm sorry but I have the ODDEST pet peeves and one of my big ones is when a grown, self sufficient, financially independent, adult man won't get his life b/c he's trying to please mommy and daddy. I know it's not PC but if a male character is weak willed, a stage five clinger or *shudders* overly needy...I start looking for the bitch be gone spray. In the immortal words of P.Diddy "No Bitchassness".

*whispers* You a grown ass man though.

The Doc's about-face from beyond asshole where I wanted to nick an artery and let him bleed out slowly to nice guy was way too sudden. Ash took him back WAY WAY WAY too easily. The only slight (VERY slight) redemtion of Doc was when he got a good look at Ash for the first time when he got back.

"We're not for sure..." I'm sorry you don't know if you exist. This is the new "irregardless" and it's driving me crazy.

Typical Lost Shifters. The only thing that saved this was the angst and the very small peril moments, even though they were in the beginning.

This was pretty good. I enjoyed the love/hate relationship.

Cons-
-thin reasons to not be together.
They seemed very silly. Apparently they were easily fixed too. He told off his dad over the phone and that was that.
-Scarlett's sudden hatred.
Um, this was was confusing. I realize she went over the Rainbow, but this was all so sudden and felt like a ploy by the author for some sort of action.

Pros-
-Likable characters.
-steamy tension.
-good dialogue.

Ok, Doc Featherstone is a bit of a jerk but I think we all know he has always been. I was glad to see Ash though. I wondered what would happen with Ash! This was a good story. I didn't love it but it was good. I was sorry to see what ends up happening to Ash while recovering though. That was sad, hoped for a different outcome.
