Dragon #8

Dragon Bound

Rate this book
All Ashe wanted was to collect Katsu and go home. All Katsu wanted was Ashe. Figuring out that they're in love might have taken a while, but now that they've done it there's only one thing to leave the country.

Except a bounty on Ashe's head means that everyone is out to kill him. Threats are constant and injuries abound. Not even the dragon can stop a mob from slaughtering Ashe, and if a mythical creature can't do it, what hope does a dispossessed prince have? They'll need a miracle to get out of this alive, and none of them believe in miracles anymore.

About the author

J.B. McDonald

JB has been writing fiction of some sort or another since she was eight years old, when she started with the highly acclaimed and illustrated, “Bucky the Bronco and his Missing Horseshoe.” Everyone in the McDonald household heard about it. Most even read it. Then they made the fatal mistake of encouraging it, and before anyone quite knew how it happened, JB declared that she was going to spend the rest of her life writing.

She wrote online for a stretch and warped a good many people. They sent heartfelt thanks and, on occasion, gift baskets. Sometimes they even brought her cheese sauce and wine. They were less appreciative of the gift of the world’s worst porn, which, thankfully, has gone by the wayside.

JB is possessed of a sense of humor that just will not quit, despite how many stick beatings it’s been through. She also has a cheerfully evil laugh that brings terror to many young hearts. She sadly lacks in cooking skills, which is why the gift baskets and cheese sauce are so important. Instead of cooking, or doing anything as time-consuming as eating regularly, she devotes all her time to writing so that she can inflict more horror—that is, fiction—on you, her hopefully devoted fans.

JB can be reached at her website (https://www.JBMcDonaldScribblesHere.w...), as long as you don't get distracted by her ravings or adorable pictures and videos of her service dog, Doc.

The continuation of this story from where the last book left off is seamless, and the suspense as to what was going to happen now that the queen is hunting Ashe, is very high. Both Ashe and Katsu have real obstacles to overcome, and I was really glad Ashe had decided to free Daisuke, one of the servants, to take with him as a guard. He came in very, very handy!

Katsu has decided to follow Ashe, his mother's plans be damned. But he very quickly finds out how tough it is to travel alone, and gets robbed. He perseveres, but since he is still 'nobility', his recovery is much easier than were he a common peasant. Still, finding Ashe and dealing with his troubles is a challenge, and for a long time, it didn’t look very good.

Ashe has his own problems to deal with. He wants to go home as quickly as possible, but Daisuke seems to slow them down at every opportunity, When Ashe gets taken prisoner I thought my heart would stop. And that wasn't even the worst of it. Luckily, Ashe is very, very determined to leave the country with Katsu – and do so alive.

Ashe and Katsu have come a long way in these eight short books. Their love has grown, they have gotten to know each other and changed for the better, and I loved not just the adventures they had on the way. But the ending to this latest installment. While I hope there will be more books in this series, this story rounds out what happened very nicely and left me emotionally satisfied and happy.

If you like fantasy with a touch of romance, if you enjoy stories about dragons and faraway lands, and if you're looking for an entertaining series that has a few unexpected twists, then you will probably like this book, as well as the entire series.

I suspect that jumping in mid-stream or rather for the last of the rapids probably contributed to a bit of my confusion at the onset, but I quickly got my bearings. Honestly, if I had read the entirety of the series I would have rated this higher--4 stars, for it does seem to be a very satisfying ending for these men. Now, I want to go back and read the series from the onset. It's a fairly fast-paced fantasy tale with lovable heroes. Good entertainment value: chase scenes, a dragon with attitude, loyalty, and terrifying injuries--what's not to like. Oh yeah...there's also this part where my heart went pitter patter and I sighed deeply, but since that messes with my street cred I'm gonna say that it was the blood that bumped up the rating for me.

Having done this wrong, I recommend reading the series in order. Don't follow my bad example.

Favorite quote:
“Is that what you’ve been saying all this time?” he asked, rubbing his cheek against Katsu’s.

He could hear the answering smile in Katsu’s voice. “Sometimes. Sometimes it’s more crude.”

Lovely, lovely end to this series! Sweet moments with Ashe and Katsu, lots of action and excitement, fantastic magic, and an increasingly caring dragon. Great good fun.

Favorite Quote:
"Are you sure you want to be committed to him?" He gestured at Katsu. "He's going to be this cranky forever."
