I read this book on Netgalley and found it interesting. Harry has had some issues growing up but not finishing high school but going in the military and then becoming an officer and a combat pilot finds him in the combat situation of his life. He does very well but then life seems to take a dive from there. Can Harry turn his life around again? You need to read this short story to see how you can improve your life again.
Pros If you’re interested in an intense fighter to fighter combat scenario, this is the best I’ve ever read. You feel yourself in the cockpit of Harry’s F-15 against overwhelming odds. The technical aspects and air co-ordination with AWACS was very insightful.
Cons The second half of the book talks about his life before and after his career ending injury. Much of the information in this part could easily be integrated to the beginning. At times I felt this part was an afterthought. It carried none of the initial flowing prose. It was jarring and rough. Perhaps that’s what the other intended. Editing: It needs it. A fleshing out would tighten up the story. We know it’s Harry so why do so many sentences start with his name. Many of the sentences are in past tense when the action is present. Let’s re-evaluate the word ‘had’ and ‘that.’ A point of confusion for me was Major Howard. I don’t want to give anything away, but I found it odd that he moved Harry’s paper up the chain of command after giving him a failing grade.
F-15 dogfight over Iraq. Strictly for the boys. Strongly recommend for grades 7-12 with its themes of courage and battling adversity. Nice short novella (48 pp) that does not make the mistake of going religious.
