Have you ever wondered what the afterlife is like? Well Dawn Allegary, struck and killed by lightning, finds just that. Upon waking from her death, Dawn finds herself given another chance at life, her eternal life. However, this chance at a new beginning isn't as easy as it might seem. At strife with a searcher named Josephine, a member of an organisation who search for the recently passed, Dawn struggles to subdue her jealously and truly accept herself and her past. The humiliation from her previous life not only threatens her happiness but also her new chance at love. Will Dawn be able to move on from her earthly life? Or will she run from her past and lose all hope of a second chance at life?
“Light Burns” by Robert Russin is a compelling fantasy novel with a twist. Follow Dawn Allegary as she discovers what most of us have wondered about at one time or another: What is the afterlife like? When lightning strikes Dawn and she dies, she passes from her mortal death into the afterlife and gets a chance to live again, which is her eternal life. But could it really be as simple as that?
Dawn has issues left over from her earlier life, and they could interfere with the opportunity to be happy and in love again. She has a hard time accepting her past and who she was and is now. Josephine is a character that is part of an organization that looks for the recently deceased. She’s called a searcher. Dawn tries to leave her earthly life behind, but it may not be as easy as she had hoped. How long will she run from her past and possibly destroy her chance to live and love? Do you get a do-over in the afterlife and become better?
Russin is a fantastic writer who delves into these questions through his storylines and characters. Even if you may not agree with all the concepts, the premise is enticing and interesting, inviting us to read with openness and eagerness. This is a drama that really makes you wonder about who you are, the life you lead, and the afterlife that might await you. I like the idea of choices, and how the ones we make or don’t make in this life have immediate consequences, but possibly ones after death too.
This book has supernatural tones to it that will appeal to fans of the paranormal. Another aspect of the book that I like is that everything isn’t always tied up in a neat ribbon. It leaves room for thoughts and questions. The author’s style is natural and easy, but there is a philosophical thread that runs throughout it. The dialogue is engaging and realistic, which grounds the fantasy aspects nicely. I love how the author is able to blend the commonplace with the imaginative elements. For a creative, cleverly crafted journey into the afterlife, “Light Burns” by Robert Russin is a must-read.
