He produced novels, plays, biographies, and journalist pieces. Among his most famous works are Beware of Pity, Letter from an Unknown Woman, and Mary, Queen of Scotland and the Isles. He and his second wife committed suicide in 1942.
Zweig studied in Austria, France, and Germany before settling in Salzburg in 1913. In 1934, driven into exile by the Nazis, he emigrated to England and then, in 1940, to Brazil by way of New York. Тук из въздуха се носи нещо, което ви размеква и разнежва, кара ви да не се бунтувате, да сте по-спокоен.”
Цвайг пише любовното си обяснение към Бразилия през 1941 г. Само година по-късно той и съпругата му Лоте са намерени мъртви в Петрополис. Жизнерадостният тон на книгата едва ли е подсказвал предстоящата трагична развръзка – по всичко е личало, че писателят най-сетне е намерил своето слънчево убежище, своя тих пристан от бушуващата война в Европа. Затова и “Бразилия. Страна на бъдещето” се чете колкото с удоволствие, толкова и с горчивина от запознатите с тези факти.

Икономиката й сякаш е предпоставена даденост – суровинно-ориентирана към кафето, какаото и тютюна. Най-ценното за една страна обаче – човешкият капитал, е забележително мирна амалгама от местни, колонисти и по-късни преселници, които си съжителстват удивително добре в Новия свят – много рядък случай в колониалната и най-вече постколониалната реалност на света.
По богатството на описанията, дълбочината в проучването и поднасянето на историческите факти, и разбира се - литературни достойнства, книгата е на светлинни години от съвременните опити за описание на пребивавания в чужди страни от типа “Една година в...”. Страхотна книга, от която научих изумителни факти за Бразилия, за която - както се оказа - си нямах и бегла представа. Страшно увлекателен Стефан Цвайг, няма изненади.

O livro é uma introdução a respeito do Brasil para um público europeu. Combina um tanto de ensaio, com outro tanto de informações sobre geografia, história, economia do país. A isso se soma outro tanto de relato de viagem, em que ele relata suas viagens pelo Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, cidades mineiras, Salvador e Recife. Em vários trechos reafirma seu interesse em conhecer outras partes do país, como a Amazônia.
O título se tornou uma espécie de slogan informal do Brasil, em geral se trocando o artigo indefinido pelo definido, que tornaria algo bem mais incisivo. Parece, porém, que é essa edição adota faz o correto.
É óbvio que o livro é escrito sob as circunstâncias dos anos 30, com a ascensão do fascismo e nazismo, que tornaram a vida europeia absolutamente insuportável para milhões de pessoas, além, é claro, do stalinismo que também ocupara seu espaço no inferno político do continente.
Diante de tanta desesperança, o Brasil daquele tempo, mesmo se uma ditadura, soava como algo mais luminoso do que o que passava no continente de Zweig. Talvez, até por isso, ele tenda a acentuar os aspectos positivos que ele encontra no país. Para ele, a grande questão era – e não deixa de ser uma com enorme valor – como conseguir a convivência pacífica entre pessoas, de raças, classes, cores, religiões e convicções? Para ele, o nosso país havia conseguido apresentar uma solução melhor que a de outros lugares, com o que, outros chamariam de democracia racial.
É verdade que ele está descrevendo o Brasil da virada da década de 1930 para a de 1940. Mas, em certos aspectos o país parece tão estrangeiro a nós mesmos. Isso talvez seja o que talvez mais impressione na leitura do livro. É uma terra estrangeira, mas é para um estrangeiro como Zweig um lugar onde há esperança. Em que momento isso se perdeu? Em que momento, enfim, o Brasil se perdeu? Ou tudo aquilo seria apenas a miragem de um estrangeiro que nunca mais voltaria a ver sua terra e que, em meio ao desespero, sonhava com um mundo que nunca existiu?

His descriptions of Brazil in the 1940s are so exuberant and vivacious, you'd think he was visiting a place where food was plentiful to all, where races mixed seamlessly (if we ignore the rape of white men to black women), where people were healthy and well-educated (er, no).
Still, Zweig's hyperboles aside, he does capture what in Brazilians is quite particular in their movements, bodies, attitudes. He compares Brazil's best assets to those of Europe and defends that Brazil has all the potential to be a global leader. Naîve, romantic, and a deep analysis of what he sees (not how it comes to happen).
Brazil is going through it worst economia crisis in the century. To put ot in perspectice, Brasil lost in 2016 twice than what the US did in famous 2008 crash. Except that we were never rich to begin with. So we wait. We wait. Brazil is the land of the future indeed - but what future?

May 10, 2025This is such a complementary casting of a land and its people that I easily imagined this book was commissioned by Brazil’s version of the Chamber of Commerce to encourage investment and tourism. Between these covers, Brazil is a peaceful land where the inhabitants live in amity regardless of race and where even coups d’etat occur without bloodshed. This is a country of smiles, goodwill, and limitless horizons.
Of course there are regrettable moments in its history, several hundred years of slavery being the most notable. Others include the expulsion of the Jesuits – supposed educators and protectors of indigenous people – in 1759, following slightly more than two hundred years in country; the unforgiving extraction of agricultural and mineral commodities; and the repression of industry and the arts under edict from the Portuguese Crown, which fortunately changed for the better following the 1807 arrival of the royal family and court, all in flight from Napoleon’s approaching army.
But Brazil is now looking to its future; the past is past. Such was the case in 1941, anyway. Given that the author and his wife took their lives at their Petrópolis home in February 1942 shortly after publication of this book, I’m left to consider – combined also with memories from my own limited visits to Rio de Janeiro and São Paolo in the mid-1990s for work – that perhaps Brazil is something other than the magical place here depicted. I thought also of Emerson’s critical remarks about travelling, that we carry our souls with us wherever we may be.

Esta reedição de "Brasil, um país do futuro" não poderia ter chegado às minhas mãos em melhor hora. Neste momento em que escândalos políticos se sucedem a cada momento, minando não só a economia do país, como também nossos valores éticos e o próprio orgulho de ser brasileiro, o olhar entusiasmado e otimista de Stefan Zweig atuou como um bálsamo poderoso para mim. Depois de uma brilhante introdução sobre a história política e econômica do Brasil desde o seu descobrimento até 1940
- que a meu ver deveria ser leitura obrigatória nas escolas de segundo grau - Zweig nos conduz em uma viagem fascinante a diversas regiões do país, quase cego de encantamento. Para o respeitado autor austríaco de grande cultura e extraordinária produção literária, o velho mundo europeu já não tinha mais futuro possível, tão envolvido estava naquela guerra absurdamente autodestrutiva.As respostas para um mundo melhor e mais justo Zweig as encontrou aqui no Brasil, um país destinado a ser um grande exemplo para toda a humanidade. O texto em prosa, muitas vezes, é pura poesia. No final do livro, uma pergunta ficou me rondando: por que foi que nos perdemos nesse caminho que nos conduziria a um futuro tão promissor e feliz?

Не ми хареса особено. През цялото време бех с чувството на някаква насилена възторженост, все едно Цвайг трябва да се отплати с постоянни хвалебствия на страната, която му е дала убежище. Като че ли се опитва да намери положителното във всяка ситуация и всяка бразилска особеност. Но май и сам не си е повярвал, не се е заразил от лекотата и щастието в бРазилия, на които така се възхищава - като знаем как е завършило всичко. Разбирам го, но не ми се чете такава книга.

Very naïve at some points, especially talking about Brazil's history, but also very innocent in a good way when talking about brazilian culture. Zweig casts a light on 1940's Brazil in development, traveling to Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Bahia and the northeast of Brazil, he sees beauty and purity in this great land. With extraordinary narrative rhythm he takes you by hand to a journey: a real effort on trying to understand this "exotic" country. At least exotic to a jewish german man fleeing the war. Sometimes he sounds so optimistic about Brazil's future that we are left wondering: what did we do? what happened to that bright future of ours? But with everything that is going on here, it's nice to have someone say good things about my country and my people.

Es una belleza literaria sin duda alguna.... Conocer a Brasil, desde sus inicios hasta ser una nación grande en la pluma de Zweig ha Sido realmente sublime.
No hay lectura de Zweig que no termine gratamente satisfecha por haber invertido algunas horas ahondando en sus letras.
Después de haber leído "Viajes", quería saber si el autor había escrito algo sobre su estadía en Brasil y no me falló mi corazonada.
Este relato es netamente histórico, comienza en el año 1500 con el descubrimiento de esta hermosa tierra sudamericana por las expediciones Portuguesas, su independencia, la necesidad de emplear esclavos africanos para el sombrío de caña de azúcar y va envolviéndonos con su gran conocimiento, usando su, ya reconocida, elegante narración.
Vale la pena leerla? Claro que sí, no conocía nada de Brasil a más de lo que me enseñaron en su momento en la escuela, y ha Sido muy grato reconstruir este país inmenso, no solo en territorio, sino también en sus productos pero mucho más por su gente.

zweig never disappoints. written in 1941, and yet i couldn’t help but feel secondhand embarrassment and shame—
1. for how the rest of the 20th century played out in brazil. zweig didn’t live to witness the rest of the mayhem. tears on his behalf for the rest of the coups and dictatorships that swept through latin america after his death.
2. for how our generation sees (or more often than not fails to see) brazil now. i romanticized the hell out of this book—reading it with endless samba, bossa nova, and the smell of coffee beans from minas gerais swirling in the background. bittersweet in the best way.

Stefan Zweig... langweiliger Name irgendwie. Geträumt mit dem Zug nach Ouro Preto zu fahren. Diskussion mit dem Freund, wie sehr und in welcher Weise sich die Stadt und die Landschaft drumherum im Vergleich zu den alten Ansichtskarten verändert hatte. Schwer zu glauben, dass es sich bei dem beschriebenen Land um ein wirklich existierendes handelt. Noch besser wäre es, "Stefan Zweig" wäre niemals dort gewesen und hätte sich alles nur ausgedacht. Oder er hat dieses Land und all diese Orte eben bereist, aber er kann nicht anders, als den Reisebericht trotzdem sich auszudenken. Bedenklich wenn es nur Reisereportagen entweder von Leuten gibt, die alles wirklich bereisen und alles genau beschreiben und sich nicht die kleinste Lüge erlauben und solchen, die das beschriebene Land nie betreten haben und sich komplett alles "nur" ausdenken. Dazwischen müsste es auch etwas geben. Sollte es doch einmal vorkommen dass in diesem Brasilien einmal etwas Langweiliges passiert, dieser sogenannte Stefan Zweig würde sich einfach weigern, es zur Kenntnis zu nehmen, von Aufschreiben gar keine Rede. Ich werde jetzt wahrscheinlich eine ganze Weile, wenn ich eine Berglandschaft sehe, ein Ouro Preto in die Landschaft hineinphantasieren und warum auch nicht. Gestern habe ich bereits damit angefangen.

Dass es mir immer wieder Freude ist ein Buch von Stefan Zweig zu lesen, habe ich öfters schon erwähnt. Auch dieses Buch über sein Traumland Brasilien ist sehr gut gelungen. Einerseits erzählt er die Geschichte von der Entdeckung bis zur Neuzeit - aber auch seine persönlichen Eindrücke bei Reisen ins Landesinnere. Auch 80 Jahre nach Erscheinen dieses Buch ist noch vieles so, wie es Zweig beschrieben hat.
Nach der Flucht aus Nazi-Deutschland wanderte Zweig nach Brasilien aus. Dort schrieb er kurz vor seinem Freitod auch sein letztes und berühmtestes Buch "Schachnovelle".

Livre descriptif, de voyage et d’histoire de Stephan Zweig sur le Brésil. Il est intéressant d’accéder aux analyses d’un grand du siècle sur un pays en mutation. La partie historique est une belle synthèse tout comme la partir économique et culturelle. Il convient néanmoins de replacer l’oeuvre dans son contexte et le contexte de l’auteur afin de conserver un esprit critique sur certaines affirmations.

Mesela kitapta sonlara doğru "Kahve Ziyareti" başlıklı bir bölüm var ki, yani sırf bu bölümü okumak için bile bu kitap alınır.
Resmen başlı başına bir kısa öykü adeta. Kahvenin Brezilya'ya geliş hikayesi, ekonomi üzerindeki etkisi, çekirdekten sofraya dek geçirdiği aşamalar, kültürel doku üzerindeki etkisini muazzam anlatmış Zweig...
Kitabın ilk kısmında, uzunca bir bölümde, önce Brezilya'nın keşfediliş hikayesini okuyoruz. Yerliler, ilk yerleşimciler, Cizvitlerin ülkeye gelişi, dinsel ve dilsel değişim...
Hemen ardından Brezilya'nın gelişimine katkı sunan ürünlerin ülke üzerindeki sosyal ve ekonomik etkilerini öğreniyoruz. Peki nedir bu ürünler? Şeker, tütün, kakao ve pamuk. Her bir ürünü ayrı ayrı açıklamış yazar.
Sonra Rio De Janerio, Sao Paolo, Belo Horizonte, Bahia diyerek gezintiye başlıyoruz bu koca ülkede. Şehirleri sokak sokak, bulvar bulvar, kilise kilise geziyoruz. Gezerken Brezilya'da mimariye, sanata, edebiyata, müziğe, plajlara, insan davranışlarına, kısaca Brezilya kültürüne ait ne varsa öğreniyoruz. Ama en çok Rio üzerinde duruyor yazar. Buraya ayrılan kısım diğerlerine göre biraz daha fazla.
Bu bir yönüyle gezi kitabı, bir yönüyle tarih bir yönüyle de edebiyat kitabı aslında. İçinde her şey var yani bu kitabın. Okuyup da beğenmeyen çıkmaz diye düşünüyorum.
Hiç gitmediğim halde Zweig'ın anlatımıyla ülkeye gitmiş kadar hissettim. Zaten bir süredir aklımda olan ülkeye gitme isteğimi kamçıladı bu kitap. Bekle beni Brezilya!

In seiner Einleitung erklärt Zweig, warum er dieses Buch geschrieben hat und warum er sich für dieses Land letztendlich als Asyl entschieden hat. Sehr systematisch hat er sich auf dieses Buch vorbereitet und das Ergebnis ist eine sehr übersichtlich Einführung in die Geschichte, Wirtschaft und Kultur des Landes.
Nicht nur der Titel mit den Worten „Ein Land der Zukunft“ ist positiv, auch im Text stellt Zweig immer wieder das Positive in den Vordergrund. Nachteile bringen Vorteile und die beschreibt er „Es gibt kein besseres Maß für die Willenskraft eines Menschen wie eines Volkes, als die Schwierigkeiten, die bei seiner physischen und moralischen Leistung zu überwinden sind.“ (Seite 129)
Zurückgreifend auf persönliche Erfahrungen und Reisen beschreibt er ausführlicher die Städte Rio de Janairo, Sao Paulo und einige alte Städte im Norden des Landes, wo er mit dem Flugzeug hinkam. Aber immer spricht Begeisterung aus den Texten. So beschreibt er uch die wahrscheinlich älteste Stadt Brasiliens und Südamerikas: Bahia. „Hier stand der erste Pfeiler des großen kulturellen Brückenschlags über den Ozean, hier ist aus europäischem, afrikanischem und amerikanischem Urstoff die neue, die fruchtbar gärende Mischung entstanden.“ (Seite 261)
Reiseführer und Monografien über Länder altern sehr schnell. Sind nicht mehr aktuell. Nur dem Namen des Autors Stefan Zweig ist es zu verdanken, dass dieses Buch noch immer verkauft und gelesen wird.

Apesar de bem recebido nos países do exterior, o livro em questão não encontrou a mesma positividade no Brasil. Como nativa, entendo bem o porquê.
Stefan Zweig era um autor austríaco-judeu no apogeu do nazismo na Europa, de maneira que sua visão do Brasil foi errônea e apolítica. Ao confrontar uma nação miscigenada de raças relativamente unidas convivendo em um mesmo espaço, o autor (cujo único exemplo de sociedade era o europeu racista obcecado em uma raça ariana), de imediato negou a possibilidade da existência da desigualdade racial no país. Pintou a imagem de um território unido e pacifista inteiramente inexistente baseada em uma visão eurocentrista; acreditou na narrativa de que o Brasil nada é se não um país diplomata que não honra figuras negativas de sua história, algo que qualquer nativo venha a desmentir de imediato, considerando os nomes dados às nossas ruas e avenidas e as estátuas erguidas em homenagem aos nossos colonizadores, genocidas da nossa história, ou ainda senhores de escravo e garimpeiros.
Apesar de compreender a lógica que influenciou a escrita do livro em questão, também noto os motivos pelos quais essa narrativa foi tão criticada pelos brasileiros no ano de seu lançamento. Um livro que enalteça a cultura brasileira no auge da Era Vargas decerto não poderia ter vindo em pior momento — e, mesmo atualmente, apesar de tê-lo escrito com boas intenções, é fato que Stefan Zweig estava inteiramente equivocado em seu julgamento.

O Brasil de Zweig é, ao mesmo tempo, projeção e realidade: fomos mais avançados que muitos enquanto no Norte Global regulações impediam negros, brancos e mestiços de estudarem ou rezarem juntos. Enquanto no Norte o avanço capitalista tornou a vida da população individualizada, vazia em si, a vida do brasileiro era mais coletiva, estendida (característica da América Latina em geral). Enquanto no Norte lutam, aqui se propaga a paz como meio de resolução de conflito - é o padrão que o escritor percebeu em nossa história.
Como sabemos, Zweig acreditou demais em nós e no nosso potencial de nos mantermos isolados de guerras. Desistiu de nós e da vida quando viu a guerra o seguir até aqui, enquanto seguíamos inabalados no Carnaval de 42. Muito do "Brasil feito de Futuro" não ocorreu, porque teimamos em sermos como os americanos ou europeus. É maravilhosa leitura do Brasil, País do Futuro, comparada à não tão aprazível experiência de viver o pós-futuro do Brasil.

Muito interessante ler as impressões de um autor europeu sobre o Brasil em 1936 e pensar no que o país se tornou em todos os aspectos. Particularmente o capítulo sobre São Paulo foi impressionante para mim que sou de lá. Ler sobre e imaginar como era a cidade há quase 100 anos...

Very good starting point for anyone who interested in latin america. Actually, i do. I dont have much knowledge about brazil and its very good to see there from a writer who i like. Its obvious Zweig in love with brazil. I think most of the people who live in nazi region would rather the other places. The book felt me like brazil is a utopia. I havent been at there, its one of my dream but i know they have a lot problems too as any other place on earth. The point i want to highlight is normally i dont feel good while reading utopia books. They have a lot things i dont accept even in my dreams. So i thought that zweig become blind, he dream about running away from being nationalist from crazy wars. He is in love the idea of combining and becoming a citizen of earth for all of us. And he found that idea inside brazil so he didnt see any other black holes. Im sure there was other people who felt similar feelings at far places around that bullshit ideas. But he is the one who writes and made a piece of art. Thank you for showing us, i would like to live in his dream, ofcourse with a few differences.

A obra é um importante documento histórico e revela a visão que um estrangeiro tinha do Brasil nos idos de 1940, em plena ditadura varguista. O levantamento histórico é recheado de afirmações claras e muito facilmente compreensíveis por quem não teve acesso a literatura acadêmica. Porém, para os já iniciados na história do Brasil, acadêmica, sabe-se que é preciso ajustar os argumentos e interpretar o peso que o autor dá para alguns episódios nacionais no seu contexto histórico e também da biografia do autor.
Excelente livro que virou epíteto brasileiro.
