يتناول هذا الكتاب بتفصيلٍ دقيقٍ، ولغة جذابة، أسوأ المهن التي شهدتها بريطانيا عبر تاريخها الطويل. وقد حاول مؤلفه توني روبنسون كشف النقاب عن بؤس الكثرة الكاثرة من السكان، الذين نسيهم التأريخ أو تناساهم كتّابه- حين ركزوا على أخبار الملوك والملكات والفرسان- بتسليط الضوء على بعض المهن التي شغلوها عن رضاً أو إكراه.

ورغم اعتراف روبنسون أن اختياراته كانت شخصية بحتة، فإنه سعى جاهداً إلى أن يكون موضوعياً في حصر أسوأ المهن لكل حقبة تاريخية تناولها، ابتداء بالرومانية وانتهاء بالفيكتورية، وبذا كان الكتاب بمثابة سجل تاريخي للحياة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية، والسياسية، ونستطيع -عبره- تلمس التواريخ المحددة لظهور مهنة ما كالقصارة، التي ظهرت في العصور الوسطى، أو اختراع آلة ما كالنسّاجة، التي طورت في العصر الفيكتوري، أو وقوع حدث جلل كالطاعون، الذي حلّ في إنجلترا خلال الفترة الستيوارتية.

كتاب طريف وجميل، بعض المهن المذكورة في الكتاب، تبعث على التقزز، وقاتلة، مثل مهنة آكل العلاجم السامة لأجل شرب ترياق مضاد لسمها بعدها مباشرة بغرض ترويجه.
عموماً الكتاب يستحق القراءة.

I really love Tony Robinson book and his hilarious stories and experiences, I didn't honestly to read a book with such a wonderful and rich information.

اخترت هذا الكتاب ظناً مني ان اجده خفيفاً ومسلياً، لكن ظني لم يكن في محله على الاطلاق، لقد كان يحتوي من المعلومات ما اتخمني وعرفني على حقبات زمنية لم اكن اعرفها، كما وقد قدم الي العديد من الوظائف المضحكة والمملة والخطرة والمقرفة والرخيصة، وفضلاً عن كل ماسبق فقد وجدت سلسلة تقارير وثائقية في اليوتيوب للكاتب نفسه، مما زادتني فائدة وامتاعاً

يعتبر افضل كتاب قريته السنادي لكذا سبب
1- انه مقسم كل عصر والمهن الصعبه والمقززه الي فيه
2- الكتاب ده ميتقريش بشرب القهوه ولا صوت فيروز لانه الحقيقه هتشمئز من مهن كتير في الكتاب
3- هتشعر في الاخر ان العبوديه من عصر لعصر هي هي باختلاف زمان بس متجدده في هيئه لبس كويس او شويه فلوس او انك ملك لشخص بعدد ساعات معينه عكس زمان
4- شرح بتفاصيل خلاه اكتر متعه يعني ازاي بيتم صناعه الفحم في العصر ده . ازاي ان المهنه الاكثر دمويه هي الراجل الي بيعدم بسيفه
5- هتلاقي مهن كويسه لكنها ممله رغم ان كتاب عشوائي لكن فكرته عبجتني بان في مهن هتختفي في ظل تطور دايم زي محصل زمان

كتاب خفيف وظريف يتحدث عن أوأ المهن في بريطانيا(وليس كل التاريخ)، عبر التاريخ,,

الكتاب بالنسبة لي تجربة فريدة في تصور الحرف المكتوب بصرياً،

فالكاتب يعمل في التلفزيون، لذا تحس وأنت تقرأ الكتاب بأنك تشاهد برنامجاً وثائقياً، و يعزز هذا الشعور أن الكاتب جرب بعض هذه المهن وصور تجربته في الكتاب، ويصلح جداً أن يكون نصاً لبرنامج وثائقي

This is for anyone who thinks life was great back in the "olden times." The author runs a British television show where he acts out the "worst jobs" depicted in these pages. He tells it like it is. Ranging in British history from Roman times up to the Victorian age, these jobs are truly terrible: boring, dangerous, stinky, low-paying, health-hazardous, or some combination thereof. I would recommend this to any history or trivia buff, especially Anglophiles.

الكتاب مفيد جدا وعرفني اد ايه فيه ناس عانت علي مر التاريخ عشان تعرف تتعايش بس ! و لكنه كان مؤلم نفسيا اني اعرف ان عشان تتبني حضارة و يوصلنا علم وتاريخ وادب كان لازم ناس تتأذي في وظايف مهينة ومؤلمة لابعد الحدود !

If you’ve ever had a bad day at work, read some of this book and you suddenly feel much better about it!

Who does the Oscar for worst job go to? In this book it’s the Tanners making leather. Boiling in lime, scraping hair and fat before then submerging the hides in a stinking warm soup of dog poo (for the enzymes within it) and water, after which it would be dunked in tanning fluid for a year. The job was bad for your social life (tanners we’re ostracised by society throughout history) and bad for your health! It boggles the mind when you think how essential leather has been to so many facets of society and yet this was how it was produced. (Although these days you’re not allowed to use dog poo and have to find alternatives)

Second worst job for me I think would either be the match makers as it was so hazardous and the side effects were so awful, or the ‘groom of the stool’ who was usually a nobleman charged with wiping the Tudor kings backside and examining the contents of his toilet 🤢 but to be fair this was seen as a highly prestigious role!

Overall it’s shocking what some of our ancestors have had to put up with in their work lives and I’ll try not to moan about my job ever again 😂

This is the historical non-fiction book which accompanies Tony Robinson's television series of the same name. Unlike the children's version of this book, it contains all the jobs covered in the series, undertaken by young and old alike. Each job is given a generous in-depth description and explanation of several pages (a relief for knowledge-hungry adults after the fun but sparse children's version of this book), and is much more wordy than the visually filled children's book, but does also include some illuminating images in the middle of the book, both photos and historical images such as tapestry images, paintings and drawings, all of which illustrate the worst jobs discussed in the book. The book is a satisfyingly lengthy 224 pages of paperback, and like the other version also comes with extras in amongst the descriptions, such as quotes from appropriate sources in relation to the job.

Whilst the avid historian will want to go beyond the 224 pages provided here, the book offers a wealth of introductory information to spark further interest, and does not shy from factual information and detail, but presented in clear and lucid language. The best thing about the book is that it brings to life the day to day existence of peoples past, and make the history of ordinary people interesting. Like so many others, I remember my school education on history as featuring kings and queens, World War II, more kings and queens, and yet more World War II. Why the focus on the royal personages of the past? Other than the fact that, as individuals, we naturally know more about them as singular people and with their power they had quite an impact on their times, your average schoolchild (and I include my younger self in this!) will tell you that who wants to read about faceless peasants toiling in drudgery for the lord of the manor when you could be reading about kings leading knights into battle or queens giving rousing victory speeches? It's about as boring as being one of those peasants facing the endless toil before him or her. But let's face it, that wasn't what history was all about for 99% of the population!

"The Worst Jobs in History" reclaims the history of ordinary people, the silent majority of history, and far from proving boring, reveals a world of fascinating historical employment, from the eccentric to the dangerous, from the physically tough to the jobs so stupidly mind-numbing that you'll wonder with no small measure of awe how our ancestors ever survived them, let alone made steady employment out of them. Overall I finished this book with a renewed respect for the ordinary folk of the past, and for most of us that means our own ancestors, and a thriving interest in the social history of the masses as opposed to the individualistic history of the elite of the past.

Engaging, informative, and lucid. Tony Robinson successfully reclaims the history of the masses, and proves that it can be interesting!

What did I learn from this book? Only that my job even on it's worst day is so much better than most of what I might have had to do even only one hundred years ago. Why the TV series, which this book is a more detailed transcript of, hasn't been released on DVD is beyond me. Tony Robinson of "Black Adder" fame not only informs but entertains as he describes the sort of jobs that his character S.O.Baldric would have had to do throughout history.
So if you feel your jobs sucks, I very much recommend that you read this book. It will make you truly thankful to even flip burgers. At least when you flip burgers you don't have to touch either poo or pee . . . Worst job in the book IMHO has got to be FULLING. Treading on cloth barefoot in a vat of pee for eight to ten hours is WAY down on my list of things I would want to do!

معلومات مفيدة وكاتب مثقف ومطلع وخفيف الظل , بهذه التركيبة يخرج لنا كتاب رائع ومميز جداً. يسرد لنا الكاتب رحلة شاقة لحياة هؤلاء العمال البؤساء الذين تجاهلهم التاريخ و لم يحفل سوي بحياة الملوك والزعماء والقادة , ورغم ذلك فما كنا سنتقدم لولا هؤلاء المهمشين .
كان الأولي أن يكون اسم الكتاب (أسوأ المهن في تاريخ بريطانيا) لأن الكاتب لم يتناول المهن خارج بريطانيا إلا نادراً , احتوي الكتاب علي معلومات جديدة ومهن جديدة علي مسامعي مثل (القصار وجا��ع بيض الغلموت وصائد بيض القمل وصائد الجرذان وغيرها من المهن المقززة والغريبة والشاقة والمملة)

بريطانيا ، مظاهر الحياة بها قديما ...نعرفها من خلال كتب التاريخ المنمقة ، الروايات و اللوحات الفنية و حتى ان لم نفعل فالأفلام و المسلسلات التاريخية ساهمت بشكل كبير في رسم صورة عنها، ملوك والملكات ، أمراء وأميرات ، قصور و ملابس فيكتورية ، معارك و فرسان المائدة المستديرة !
حقب حلمنا بالعيش فيها ... فالامر مغري كتجربة فريدة!لكن اغلبنا يعرف ان التاريخ إنما يصور نصف الحقيقة ان لم يكن اقل بكثير !
تلك الكاتدرائيات المبهرة تصميمها هل فكرنا يوما في من قام ببناءها ؟ او حتى كيف ؟ او من كان خلف كل ذلك الجمال ؟
وتلك المعارك ...من خاضها ، ومن كان على عاتقه القيام بجميع الاعمال الصعبة و الخطيرة ، المملة والمقززة حتى !؟

الكتاب قد نعتبره تأريخا لجزء من الحياة الاقتصادية والاجتماعية لأصحاب الوظائف الدنيا والشاقة الذين ساهموا في صنع المجد للأمبراطورية التي لاتغيب عنها الشمس !
و قد يتم ادراجه ضمن الكتب الخفيفة التي تقدم المعلومة بأسلوب سلس و طريف، غير انه يفسح لك المجال للخوض عميقاً في تلك المراحل التاريخية و تناولها بالتحليل والنقد ..
هو بالأساس استعراض لبعض أسوأ المهن عبر التاريخ الإنجليزي ضمن 6 فصول وذلك بحسب الحقبة التاريخية..
ابتداءا من فترة الحكم الروماني للجزيرة البريطانية مرورًا بالعصور الوسطى الى الفترة التيودورية التي تعد بالنسبة إلى الكثيرين نهضة حقة، لكن الكاتب اعتبرها خادعة، صحيح انه ليس هناك من طريقة موضوعية يمكن لنا من خلالها قياس بؤس الانسان" لكن يمكننا القول ان ظروف الحياة لمعظم السكان العهد التيودوري كانت استمرارًا لظروف حياة القرون الوسطى البائسة .ثم نصل الى العهد الستيورتي، الذي شهد الكثير من الانقلابات الدينية والسياسية، تلاه العصر الجيوروجي المتميز
اذ "خلف كل ظاهرة جيوروجية مبهرة باطناً خفياً مظلماً" وكانت النهاية بالعصر الفيكتوري!

مهن لم يتردد الكاتب في تجربة بعض منها بنفسه لاختبار ما مر به أصحابها من مشاق ومخاطر. مهن تربعت على العرش بحكم طبيعتها الشاقة والخطرة كعامل مناجم الفحم والذهب الذي كان يقضي شهوراً في مناجم لا يرى فيها نور الشمس، وقد يقضي من دون أن يراها.وفلاحي العصور المظلمة وحارق الجير ومنظف المداخن وصانع الكبريت!
فيما انضمت بعض الأعمال لهذه القائمة بجدارة بسبب غرابتها وما يمكن أن تثيره في النفس من نفور واشمئزار..كحافد الفارس ، الذي لولاه لما سمعنا عن بطولات الفارس ، و مهنة صانع أوتار الكمان الذي كان يتعامل مع أمعاء الخراف بما تحويه من فضلات.

وهكذا تناول الكتاب بتفصيل دقيق ولغة بسيطة أسوأ المهن التي شهدتها بريطانيا ،وقد حاول توني روبنسون من خلاله كشف النقاب عن بؤس من نسيهم التاريخ، ويختم كتابه باختبار طريف مكون من 10 أسئلة ليتعرف القارئ على المهنة الأنسب له لو وُلد بإحدى تلك الحقب!

يتحدث المؤلف في الكتاب عن أسوأ المهن في التاريخ البريطاني، وجميع المهن المذكورة تتصف بواحدة أو أكثر من الصفات الخمس التالية: المهن ذات الخطورة العالية، المهن القاسية والمجهدة جداً، المهن القذرة جداً التي تتضمن التعامل مع فضلات الإنسان والحيوانات، المهن المملة والرتيبة جداً، المهن ذات راتب متدني جداً.
يمكننا القول أن الكتاب في معظمه بائس جداً وأحياناً مرعب ومؤلم عندما يتحدث عن عمالة الأطفال، أو تعرض العمال إلى ظروف سيئة وخطيرة لدرجة لا يمكن تخيلها في وقتنا الحالي.

فكرة الكتاب مختلفة و مميّزة و الترجمة جيّدة في مجملها
المعلومات التارخيّة مطروحة بطريقة سهلة، يسهل على غير المختصين في التاريخ الاجتماعي استيعابها،
تناول الكاتب أسوء المهن في مراحل مختلفة من التاريخ البريطاني، مهن صادمة محفوفة بالمخاطر و في معظمها الكثير من الإهانة للذّات البشريّة
ماأصعب أن يفقد الإنسان كرامته فقط ليحيا
ماأقسى أن يولد عبدا و يعمل كآلة دون مراعاة لأبسط حقوقه
مهن قذرة، أخرى قاسية، مهن شديدة الخطورة يدرك من يقبل بها أنّها قد يموت في أيّة لحظة و مهن قد تقتل أصحابها سأما و مللا
و أنا أزور متحفا في المرّة القادمة لن يبهرني لمعان التحف الذهبيّة بقدر ما سأشعر باختناق عمّال المناجم الذين قضّوا شهور تحت الأرض ينقبون عن الذّهب
و لن أتعجب لدقّة نقوشات عملة نقديّة و أنا أذكر صعوبة سكّ النقود مقابل أجر زهيد و تهديد ببتر أعضاء ساك النقود إذا ماسولت له نفسه السرقة

I picked this book up when I was in London this year from the Museum of London. I have seen some of the tv episodes made that accompany the book - or the book accompanies the tv episodes.... Either way, I find both enjoyable. I have it as my bedtime read - just dipping into some of these horrific jobs each night (toad licker - don't ask me - gentleman of the stool, charcoal burner, gold miner in Roman times, treadmill operator - that's someone in medieval times who operated a crane like structure by walking on planks all day long that were suspended high up off the ground that could easily give way, hence generally they were blind people or those who could not see very well) puts the day into perspective : ) It's a quirky book, easy to digest, and let's us know much more about the common man and woman that history had for so long ignored in favour of kings and battles.

This is as much fun as the tv show. There's a certain schaderfreuden in watching Tony Robinson be wildly abused, dragged through things, soaked in pee and all kinds of other awful things. It's just the thing to make you feel better about your awful job! This is the perfect book for evil giggles and the tv shows of him being forced to try these jobs is a must see.

It's a fun romp through history and a great reminder that the vast majority of people WEREN'T silk wearing nobles who got to prance about being clean all the time. Most people had to make do with tough lives, harsh conditions, and all the muck you could ever stomach....and that's just in your front yard and on your dinner table. This is a fun read for a person looking to round out your sense of history and look beyond "pretty people in nice costumes!"

He should write more books...and make MORE of these shows for me to chortle over.

No matter what kind of day you are having, this book will make you feel slightly better. This book chronicles some of the worst jobs ever, and they are all from Great Britain (could have mentioned this in the title). This is also a documentary series and the episodes are worth watching.

Some of my favorites included (SPOILER alert): the Barber Surgeon (master of blade work including surgery and haircuts) the Groom of the Stool (bathroom attendant and wiper of the king's butt), Executioner (originally this meant to "execute" the law, i.e. death sentence), Nit Picker (pick out lice from wigs), Castrato singer (eunuch singers), Hermit (paid to live on a piece of land as a live garden troll for usually seven years), Mud Lark (waded through human waste sludge to get anything "valuable" coming out of the sewer).

First I need to give this to my niece (14) and nephew (12) to read, then I need to give it to a friend at work who would definitely get a kick out of it.

I'm a huge fan of Tony Robinson's work -- from fictional series like Blackadder to his long-running archeological series Time Team, and everything in between -- so of course I've watched his series of "Worst Jobs in ____ History." Fill in the blank with Roman through to Victorian. I thought this book would be a rerun of those, and that's definitely true, but it's also filled with more details and more horrible jobs. My social-historian heart was thrilled, reading of the average person, their jobs and lives against the well-known backdrop of "big history."

I found this to be a very interesting book. I had watched the television series of the same title years ago and loved all the random bits of history that Tony Robinson shared with viewers. I found the book to be easy to pick up and set down (probably the reason why it took me over a year to finish the book). Each chapter was divided by the different jobs with some of the sections including primary sources, drawings, and photographs.

I would recommend The Worst Jobs in History to those who enjoy reading about history.

رحلة بين عوالم وأزمان برطانيا العظمى من العصور المظلمة الى العصر الفيكتوري ويالها من رحلة، كتاب يُعتبر من أبواب ومفاتيح تدخلها الى عالم المهن والاعمال سواء الشاقة أو المقرفة أو المجهدة دون المردود المادي،يُعجز عن تلخيص هذا الكتاب بشكل مختصر ولكن لا ننسى مشروع ودار كلمة عن ترجمتها لهذا العمل الرائع والشكر موصول الى المترجم عبد الله جرادات

A condensed gem radiating much information on history of the British which pomposity is based on inhumanity and enslaved forced labour of co-tribesmen at first stage as one could get from described upon centuries conditions commoners had been kept in.

It's a very informative, educative, easy-to-read work.

Another one of those gateway/coffee table history books. This one goes over some of the worst jobs to have in several historical eras in the UK. It's nice enough, but nothing profound. The author does a good job putting it all together and inserting a few puns.

توقعت من الكتاب أكثر مما وجدت فيه. أسلوب الكاتب ممل جداً، كما أنه ينحرف عن وصف معاناة المهن بشكل كبير. كما أنه تحدث عن بريطانيا وليس العالم!
