Initial Reaction: Great Brac Village Series installment.
Follow Up Reaction: Research!

First, the blurb....

Keaton Richards owns Jammin' Juice Hut. His life is simple, worry-free, and he loves owning his own business. But when events start unfolding after a mysterious stranger shows up at his shop, Keaton begins to question not only his sanity, but if he should pursue the edgy and secretive man he finds himself enthralled with.

Kade Marshall served fifteen years in prison for two crimes—one he committed and one he had nothing to do with. The only thing he wants to do is put his past behind him and start living again. But when feelings of doubt and depression start to creep in, Kade isn’t so sure coming home to Brac Village was the smartest thing for him.

In Keaton’s plight to save Kade, he teaches the man the meaning of life, love, and how to live once again. But will that be enough or will Kade walk away from Keaton, feeling that his mate deserves so much better than an ex-con?

My thoughts.....

Two things kept bugging me: styre mente and Kade himself. So I made the effort to search these two things out and I came up with these results.

First: The paranormal term styre mente first came out in the Chapter 2 of the book Zeus' Pack #9: Rave. Here is an excerpt:

Note: The discussion is about Logan Albinster, who turns out to be one of Rave's mates.
“He’s a styre mente.”
Everyone looked at Max, confused.
Max growled. “Does no one read about preternatural creatures around here? The ancient scrolls aren’t easy to come by, but you can read them.”
“Okay, so we’re uneducated backwoods wolves. Sue us, Doc. Just tell us what the hell a styre mente is.” Rave wanted to get out of there.
They were having wings at Theo’s, all you can eat for five bucks. That was one hell of a deal, and Rave just happened to have five
bucks in his pocket. He was pretty damn bitchy, and hungry as hell.
“They are very rare,” Max continued as if Rave hadn’t had his
little outburst. “Only one in two hundred million are born. He can control minds, literally.” The excitement and dread mingled in Max’s voice, as if he discovered UFOs really existed. He might be just as excited, if he knew what the hell Max was talking about.
“I’m still not getting it, Max,” Zeus said.
“I don’t think he knows what he is yet. Logan didn’t seem conscious of the fact that he can control minds. I asked him to stay, he refused, and I let him leave. Normally that wouldn’t have happened. If he’s left on his own, he could cause some serious damage. From his blood work, he has great potential to have TMC.”
“TMC?”
It was like dancing around the obvious that was just out of reach. Rave was starting to put the pieces together, but Max wasn’t giving them the whole story. Not all at once at least.
“Total mind control,” Max supplied. “Logan, when he realizes who he is, will be able to push himself into your mind, control it, and control whoever he wishes. And if he decides to become malevolent, he could also mind rape a person. That means he can tear down your mind and rebuild it as whatever he wishes it to be. Styre mentes are extremely dangerous and rare.”

This should explain or define who or what the minor character Kevin is.

Second: As for Kade himself, I know I read in one of the books that Maverick was talking to a man who owned a woodcraft shop where he had placed orders for Menolee's child. I still cannot find it, but I know I read it. So even if the character of Kade is not named in the other books, this may not be the first time we encountered this guy.

Why do these two things bother me?

1. Styre mente sort of threw me on a loop and as it was not defined in this book, it could throw others off too. Good thing I have read all of the stories of Lynn Hagen so my memory did not fail me.

2. Knowing that Kade character may have already been mentioned in the previous books drove me crazy for it sort of confused the time line of the Brac Village story for me.

Please note that if I have made a mistake or mistook one other character, I am open for corrections. However, I know I am right about styre mente.

Now, for the story itself, it was okay and I was happy that Keaton turned out to be a pushy guy who stabilized Kade - especially when he lectured him about smoking, not that smoking can do much damage to these shifters. I also liked the end where Ahm gives birth to his daughter. Although the medical side of me still cannot wrap itself around how two men can produce a daughter????

Anyways, all in all it was a pretty good read and is a great installment to the Brac Village Series.

3rd reading 1-10-15
Same exact thoughts as the first time. Kade really bothered me more the 3rd time around. I LOVE Keaton though. Also, really happy to see that Kevin will return in book 20!!!! Come on March!

2nd read June 2014

first read 11-12-13
I liked Keaton and Kade, but I wanted more from Kade.

Keaton was awesome and dealt with what was going on calmly.

As much as I like the mates, isn't it about time they grew up? Cecil is seriously always getting into trouble and it's getting old. It just means one of the guys will have to come and save him/them yet again.

I am going to have to read the Demon Warriors series next. I think I am missing something...

This is book #6 in the Brac Village series and it tells us about Keaton, the laid back owner of an organic food and drink café in town. He meets Kade, a snow leopard shifter (which just happens to be my favorite breed of big cat) who was just released from prison. Kade is a good guy who served time in prison for two crimes: for killing a man (in self-defense) and rape (which he did not commit at all). The story behind his conviction is shocking. Those readers who are familiar with this series will be surprised—stunned actually, as to who he was convicted of killing and the circumstances surrounding the incident. I almost dropped my Kindle as I was reading it. Believe me when I tell you that the homicide was totally justified. The so-called victim was a monster who got what he deserved. The only reason Kade was sent to prison for his action was because this occurred outside of Maverick’s jurisdiction; he was arrested, tried and convicted outside of the alpha’s reach. There were a LOT of interesting twists and turns in this story. I can’t even begin to tell you. Old wounds were reopened which brought a lot of darkness and pain for two members of the alpha’s family, but Kade’s action brought them much needed closure. The secret identities of Panahasi’s sons are revisited. To learn more about him you must read Panahasi, book #5 in the Demon Warrior series. Even though it’s been a couple months since I’ve read the book and figured out who they are, I will keep what I know to myself (a promise I made to the author). As quiet as it’s kept, I think that Maverick is well on his way to figuring out Panahasi’s secret. Maverick Brac may be few slices short of a full loaf of bread but he’s nowhere near the realm of stupid. Also, there is a birth at the end of the story that is funny and sweet; the icing on a perfect cupcake. I love Mpreg story lines. So, to sum it up: Keaton’s Lesson is in one word FABULOUS. I love the direction this author is going with this series. Once again, this book is not a standalone. It’s part of a series (several, in fact) and MUST be read in sequential order. If they are not, you will be lost as the characters from each series often cross over into other books. Well played, Lynn Hagen well played indeed. I definitely recommend this series.

3.5 - While I liked this one. And liked seeing the other guys from the other books.
The part with the "styre mente" was got me confused.
Like another reviewer pointed out we first heard of this in Zeus's bk 9. BUT the definition that Max gave in that book doesn't sound the same as what happened in this story.

The two don't seem to be talking about the same thing.

Boring.
Believe it or not the last 4 pages were the most interesting and they were about Bryce and Ahm.
I had assumed since this book was about Kade who was just getting out of prison and Keaton who we learned absolutely nothing about this book would be much better. The blurb was better than the freaking book!
I'm ready to give up on this series and reread the Brac Pack books.

I was spitting mad when Keaton said words "Oliver's father" in front of the rec center. But then again, as soon as Kade said the reason behind him doing time I knew that Oliver and Blair will find out. That still doesn't excuse someone publicly talking about someone's abuse, sexual or otherwise.

I'm pretty sure Kade was driving when Oliver's and Blair's father attacked him and his friend, as was written near the beginning of the book, now Keaton is asking himself if Kate even knows how to drive almost at the very end, did the author forget what she wrote in the same book as well.

It was my understanding, from the previous books, that vampires couldn't enter human dwellings without an invitation, how could they accomplish what they were sent out to do? And the exaggeration of Cecil is seriously getting on my nerves, almost every book where he was mentioned has this. Next up is Recker, who is a very interesting character, hopefully his book isn't mangled as well.

Regardless of said mangling I liked the storyline and Kade.

Yeah, Kade killed a man but by accident after that man raped Kade's male friend at gun point. The man was Blair and Oliver's evil father, good riddance! But his friend falsely accused Kade made him spent 15 years in jail.

He came to Brac Village and then met his mate, Keaton. He needs time to adjust his new life after prison time and having doubt about mating Keaton because he never felt good enough for his mate, bad thoughts always creeping his mind.

When the hell hound set his eyes on Kade and knowing the reason why hell hound was interested because of his anger and resentment. Kade finally realized how deep his bitternes and anger were and it almost cost his and Keaton's life, he was ready to let his bad feelings go in order to hold Keaton's for life.

I loved this book in the series. Keaton had an open heart with a loving and humorous personality. Kade, his mate, had been in prison for fifteen years for a crime he didn't commit, and now he has a second chance at life. They were good together and they worked through the troubles that came their way together. This was packed with characters from other books, and some action, and other surprises. It was an enchanting read. :)

Same old same old but it was cool to see some characters from other series who really weren't that pleasant here (the hellhound killers). I like it when it's realistic and not everyone gets along. It's why I like Deep Space 9 best.

Why are bad guys in these things always so goth looking?

Why did he have to prove his dominance while in cat form? They're not equals there?

How can they get to every single person in the village that was affected? Not everyone is outside walking around and it's night time to boot. I'd be avoiding strangers even if I were outside for that reason alone.

There was a lot of potential for angst and growth with him having been in prison but no, nothing.

They never explained why Keaton spoke oddly (pronouncing Kade like Kide).

Okay unrelated randomness at the end. Better not give that little girl her own threesome in a later book. Blech.

I really liked this one. My only real complaint is I wish that the MC's had been developed a little more-I feel like I got a general outline of their personalities but I don't really know the core of who they are, especially Keaton. I'm sure there's more to him than the easy going, healthy eating, open minded person he was in the book. Where is that little hint of an accent from that Kade kept mentioning? Why is he so open minded? Why does he react to the news of shifters and mates and the paranormal with such ease, especially since it came about under such traumatic circumstances? Why is he so okay with

I also have to say that I liked this book b/c it tied up a loose string that had been bothering me since Blair and Oliver were introduced. At the same time I can't help but think that Kade's entire ordeal could have been avoided if they'd

I really look forward to seeing how things develop with Kevin and if there's a bond of some sort between him and Keaton and the ending!

Weird but I enjoyed this. Don't get me wrong, it's a bit of mix from previous books but it is definitely different!

When I first read the blurb, I'm like, huh? An ex-con? what did he do to BE an ex-con and how on earth are ya gonna get me to like him and be on his side. When we get the DL on him though, it sheds a whole nother light on it. Almost like another example of how a bad boy can change, but he never really WAS a bad boy.

As I'm sure several fellow reviewers mentioned...."styre mente" was personally not handled very well. I'm sure others can tell you when/where this first popped up but needless to say it was a bit of time ago... I don't know about anyone else but I couldn't REMEMBER what it meant! Had to look it up. I don't know if my looked up def. matched previous book(s) or not. This was simply overlooked as, '''Hey you read the other books, you ought to know what I'm talking about.'''

One other thing, I'm not sure if it was me accidentally skipping a sentence or two at times but there was a bit of lack of flow to the story at times. Could have been me but it seemed to jump around just a little bit at times. Sorry I don't have an example to give.. just my opinion.

Overall, I liked it. The writing wasn’t the smoothest around and I had to roll my eyes at some points, but I did like Keaton. Kade wasn’t half bad either, given what was going on with him.

Although, I really hate it when a scene stops at the interesting point and then skips ahead. Wish they’d do that for the pointless sex scenes instead.

Also, I would have preferred for the book not to end on yet another . Ah well.

Merely okay. I confess I haven't bothered to read any of the previous books so that may have had some influence in my opinion tho. For me, the background was incredibly incomplete, the characters were one-dimensional and the world-building sucked. The romance was not only rushed but also pretty boring. Not even the sex was fun or interesting. I felt disconnected pretty much from the start and it only got worse towards the end. Honestly? I didn't care for a single character.

It feels like the story has no main focus. A LOT has happened in this book and I would have liked this if there was more coherence and a focal point instead of touching a little bit of this and that.
