John Simpson, aka John Kirkpatrick, aka the Man with the Donkey, was a hero of the Gallipoli campaign, though he never fired a shot in anger.

He was an Englishman, yet he was typical of the young Australians who set out on a great adventure in 1915 and never came back.

He was a larrikin, did not like bosses and never had a permanent job.

But when the going got tough, he was the sort of bloke you would like to have beside you.

The style of writing is aiming for high school children -- but having said that, I still found it a good read. The author did well to draw some comparisons between his father Bill and John Kirkpatrick, and I also found the chapter that talked about John Simpson 'the legend' versus 'the man' to be quite enlightening.
