The Prophet

Rate this book
Greg is a reporter who is about to get the story of his life. The Prophet, an elusive figure who makes predictions about disasters has just tapped him to do an exclusive interview. Except Greg's not really a reporter. Two minutes before entering his apartment, he didn't exist and when he meets the Prophet he finds out his true purpose- to kill the Prophet. But killing someone who is near omnipotent isn't easy, in fact, it takes more than one try even if you get it right.

The Prophet is a half horror, half comedy, half weird and will leave your jaw fully dropped by story's end.

Greg’s heart was racing like a heavy metal drum solo. He closed his eyes for a count of three and ran down. He tripped over someone he never even saw and they both rolled down the concrete steps. Greg hit his elbow and tailbone, crying out once in the tangle of arms and legs with a man whose skin didn’t feel right to the touch. They both came up, the man placing his hands on his knees as Greg grabbed wall to pull himself upright.
“Man, you gotta be more careful,” the man said. Greg looked at him and his mouth fell open. The man had a defleshed goat skull for a head and his skin was a shade of purple. He looked up at Greg with deep-yellow, owlish eyes and said, “What?”
Greg couldn’t speak. He shook his head. The man narrowed his eyes and his tongue rolled out of his mouth.
“Sayyyyy,” he said. “Are you that reporter guy?” He pointed a sleeveless, muscular arm at Greg. “It’s you!” He took a step forward, grunted, then looked down at his vest. The butt of the long knife stuck out of his torso like a handle. “Fuuu…” He collapsed.

Review of The Prophet by Jay Rauld
5 stars

“The Prophet” is as much speculative fiction as it is horror (although there is plenty of horror for the asking contained within), an existential interdimensional speculation on creating (and destroying) one’s own reality. Greg is a reporter (or is he?) who is “abducted” for the purpose of encountering and interviewing a man known only as “The Prophet,” a predictor of multiple mass murders and other bizarre tragedies. “The Prophet” claims Greg is only a figment of his imagination, and he has been created by The Prophet: to kill The Prophet. Confusing yet? Well, continue on, and take a trip with Greg through some realms which must resemble certain circles of hades, with entities who are human, or animal, or polygonal, or combinations of these.

No matter what one believes on the subject of consensus reality and other philosophical questions, I predict “The Prophet” will stick in the reader’s mind, for a very long time.

Greg, a reporter, is always looking for his next big story but when the mysterious figure, 'The Prophet', comes calling Greg's night goes from normal to out of this world.

Author Rauld sets up this short story simple enough with the protagonist returning home from work. He's greeted by not his wife, but a stranger sent by 'The Prophet' an enigmatic figure know for predicting major disasters. From this moment on, things begin to get wild and crazy and at times funny as well.

The story moves at a steady pace, but the twists and turns the main character experiences can be overwhelming and a bit distracting. I had to re-read certain passages to get a grip on the action.

"The Prophet" is a good mix of horror, comedy, and speculative fiction.

The Prophet is a bizarro story that pulls you along kicking in screaming. it seems like a simple story yet evolves into something else. Fans of horror may be a bit dissapointed but fans of bizarro will find that it fits nicely into the ever growing genre.

I wanted to give it five stars but it's too short. I would love to see this stretched into a full length novel or even a novella. Jay Rauld is a talented writer and one to keep an eye on.
