Its been a long while since I read an Urdu novel, and this one was so worth it. The volume contains two independent stories, the first one was really beautiful and harrowing. Partially set in Himalayas and the writing was so beautiful. The second one was really funny, with signature Faiza Iftikhar humor and gray male-character with a little twisted motives that made him such a memorable character. Loved every single word of both books...
"Me zaryab ko kisi mushkil me nahi dalna chahti, aur mujhse mushkil cheez aur konsi hai, jise saans lene ke liye bhi izzat ki zarurat hai, izzat meri bhook hai aur waqar meri pyaas hai... mohabbat... mohabbat sirf aadat, aadat aur zarurat ke begair raha jaskta hai, magar bhook aur pyaas se koi kitni der lad sakta hai." And I'm in love with these headstrong protagonists of faiza ifthikar.Phullan De Rang Kalay is one of the earlier stories of her writing career, yet its one of the best. It is the story of love, betrayal which kept me on edge to complete it within hours! Totally recommended!!
"Phullan De Rang Kaaly" by Faiza Iftekhar is a compelling blend of emotional depth, complex characters, and raw human experiences. The two novellas explore the intricacies of love, hate, and the impact of family dynamics in shaping personal destinies.
The first story, Phullan De Rang Kaaly, paints a poignant picture of Momina and Zaryab Khatak's relationship. It delves into how deeply-rooted insecurities and bitterness can lead to toxic family dynamics. The novella beautifully captures the essence of relationships that transcend blood ties and how deeply a woman’s hatred can reshape her own world. It speaks to the struggles of living in a household where one’s happiness is often compromised by others’ attempts to heal their emotional wounds.
The second novella, Saary Ghulaab Le Jaana, shifts focus to a narcissistic protagonist whose obsession with being adored spirals into an emotionally tangled situation. The novella touches upon the complexities of love, rejection, and redemption. Faiza Iftekhar expertly brings forth the destructive power of jealousy and the quest for validation, unraveling the consequences of one man's choices in love and family.
Her writing is gripping, with well-drawn characters that evoke empathy and frustration alike. The themes of emotional abuse, familial loyalty, and personal redemption are delicately handled, making the book not just a love story but a commentary on the human psyche. Both novellas captivate the reader, taking them through intense emotional journeys without being overwhelming.
Overall, Phullan De Rang Kaaly is an immersive read, offering a perfect balance of romance, drama, and the darker sides of human nature. It leaves a lasting impression, with themes that resonate long after the final page is turned. A solid 4-star read for its rich storytelling and character development.
