When I first saw the cover of Untellable, I almost thought it was about mermaids or something and I was intrigued...after reading the description I realized it was a contemporary story and not about mermaids at all, but I was still extremely curious. I wanted to know about Aspen's past and what secret she was hiding, and know that I've read the book and I know it all, I'm so glad that I read it!

I absolutely loved Untellable! It was fast-paced, and I was quickly swept up in Aspen's and Colton's worlds. I loved that it was told in dual POVs. It focused more on Aspen, but I definitely appreciated getting to see Colton's POV, too. It added an interesting perspective that allowed me to get to know Aspen even better...plus, I thought it was pretty cute to see how they both got nervous around each other. :P The romance did happen pretty quickly in this one, but I didn't actually mind that. I was quickly just as smitten with their relationship as Aspen and Colton were with each other. I also loved seeing Aspen find even more people who cared about her, and I definitely loved seeing her with her Grandma Millie. Their relationship really reminded me of both of my Grandmas, and it reminded me of fond memories with them.

While Untellable wasn't very long, I did feel like I got the chance to get to know both Aspen and Colton. I would have liked to have gotten to see a little bit more of them, as some of the events between them were mentioned, and not really shown, but I still really enjoyed the story. I loved the banter between them, and felt that their relationship was so realistic---right down to Aspen pretending to not be excited about Colton asking her to go on a picnic with him...it was so authentic and I just thought that the small, real touches like that made the story even better. Also, some of the things Colton said, and Aspen's inner monologue totally made me swoon...and Aspen actually had "Swoon" in her monologue at one point, and I was totally with her on that one.

I actually did have a favourite quote from this one, so I'm going to share it with you. I'll introduce it a bit: Aspen and Colton are on the picnic I mentioned before and he's showing her his tree house. He has a bunch of knots all over the place, and they're talking about them. So, here it is

"Actually I was a Boy Scout, and after I earned my first square knot award, I was interested and wanted to keep learning more. Some of the fisherman visiting the lodge taught me more knots. So if you need anything knotted, anything at all, I'm your man." He smiled.

The warm feeling he gave me tied my heart in knots, no rope required.

That last bit was my favourite...I was totally tied in knots, too. *sigh* Anyway, I loved this one! It was a fantastic summer read---it's not just a fluffy romance, but it also had enough romance to keep me swooning and grinning like a fool. I'd recommend Untellable to anyone who loves a fast-paced romance with a character who has a mysterious past.

I don’t often read contemporary young adult fiction but something about this one caught my interest and I’m not sorry it did. What could have been just a routine coming-of-age story turned out to have just the right amounts of suspense, romance and a look at a family that is not, big surprise, dysfunctional. How refreshing!

When Aspen first sets foot in Honey Creek, we don’t have any clear idea of why she is so defensive and aloof so I was a bit put off at her initial reaction to Colton but also charmed at his willingness and confidence to persevere. This was a very likeable young man and the mother in me wanted to make Aspen take a good look at him. Not only is he nice, he’s also got a lot of other things going for him.

Then she meets her new employer and all the family that comes with her in a nice, neat package, the kind of family any sensible person would love to have—except for one person. I have to confess, I couldn’t stand Elise, just could not stand her. Other readers will no doubt have a different reaction to her but, to me, Elise is excessively nosy and a self-centered idiot who cares ONLY about herself and what she wants. That does not change even though she becomes the catalyst for a very dark episode in Aspen’s new life.

Aspen’s background is painful but she has two wonderful people in her corner from years gone by, her grandmother, Millie, and her social worker, Margot Finkler. These are two caring, loyal women and it’s questionable whether Aspen would be as strong emotionally as she is if these ladies had not been part of her life. They also play an integral part in the inevitable disaster that is about to befall this girl whose secrets are as terrible as they can be.

What happens when her dark past comes to town is chockful of suspense and danger and lifts this tale above the ordinary. I didn’t have any real concern about the eventual outcome but Ms. Lilly completely engaged me with the unfolding of events (although Elise’s behavior afterwards did nothing to improve my opinion of her since she made all her journalistic plans before asking what Aspen might want).

Honey Creek is the setting for a number of books by different authors and is the eponymous name of an imprint of this publisher. Untellable is a nice introduction, although I wish this novella had been a bit longer, and I’ll be looking for more tales of Honey Creek and more books by Suzanne Lilly.

From the moment Aspen began telling her story, I loved her and wanted to wipe away all of her pain. She has a quiet strength even after everything she's been through, which I really admired about her. She uses swimming and painting as two healthy ways to escape from her problems and the pain when it gets to be too much to bear, yet another thing I respected about her. I was amazed with the way she handled her emotions - it showed her maturity and strength. Understandably she has a difficult time with trust and has decided to build a wall around her heart. Enter Colton.

I could see right away Colton would be good for Aspen to meet and get to know. They start off on the wrong foot, and their interactions due to misunderstandings between them in the beginning were funny and endearing. He's friendly and helpful with the sunniest of dispositions. Colton seemed almost too good to be true. Almost! There are good guys like him out there! His aunt was a great character, too. She reminded me of my aunts with her warm personality and the way she takes in Aspen like one of her own nieces.

As much as I loved Colton, I really hated his sister, Elise. I know that's a really strong word, but I can't express how much I despised her character! Aspen described her as a close friend, but in my eyes Elise was the complete opposite. What friend would try to force an interview on you when you obviously didn't want to step into the spotlight? Elise even displays some stalker-like behavior in the name of "journalism." She wants a job at a local newspaper, and what she fails to realize is that using your "friend" to get a job you really want is selfish and egocentric. At one point, I had to put my Kindle down for fear of throwing it instead. She grated on my nerves from the first page she showed up and didn't stop even at the end. All I could think about was protecting Aspen from Elise's machinations!

What I liked about this story was that Aspen's narration highlighted what life is like for a young girl as a former foster kid. There's rarely a sense of stability - at any time for any number of reasons a foster child could be moved to a new family or have to switch schools. Speaking as someone who once worked with foster kids, I know about the plethora of issues these kids face. This book can give people an idea what it's like for those who have been in foster care. Sadly there remains a stigma against kids in foster care, but I have hope that one day it'll be broken.

I don't want to say too much about the plot so as not to give anything away. I will say I had a good time reading this story - at different times I laughed, cried, grimaced, and smiled. It'll pull at your heartstrings and stay with you long after you've read it!

*I received an ARC in exchange for honest review*

Aspen Dwyer has moved to Honey Creek Ohio, in a town so small she is hoping this could be the place to start a new life and most importantly to go unnoticed. She is hiding from her past that could still hold a threat to her future.

I like Aspen was a strong and independent, once I started to discover what happened in her past I honestly felt for her. I love her sarcastic sense of humor, which she uses to keep up the walls she had built and not to let people get too close. Her only family is her Grandma Millie (loved her), and she has only one friend in her life that she can trust.

When she meets Colton Moraine and his family things start to change. Colton is the hot fireman whom notices Aspen as soon as she walks into town; the scene when they first meet was very funny. I liked Colton he is down to earth type of guy, romantic, who loves his family, and would do anything for Aspen if she would let him. However he did annoyed once in the book me with the way he reacted when Aspen told him about her past.

I liked the development of Aspen, and Colton relationship it was sweet. I liked their banter between the two, and the way Colton is always so sweet to her. There is chemistry between the two when they first meet, and they both can feel it. Although at first Aspen tries to dislike Colton she know that she can’t, she discovers that he make her feel safe and is someone she can trust. Therefore, something that starts off as friendship quickly develops into something more.

I liked the storyline, one about breaking down walls and learning to trust. It was an enjoy read that captivated me from the start, I read in one sitting as I want to know if Aspen get the happy ending that’s she deserves. It was told from Aspen and Colton POV. It had suspense, drama and romance. The only thing I would say is that I did feel that the story could have been longer. I found that some parts seemed a little rushed, in particular the ending, which I loved and though I had figured out what was going to happen and when it did happened felt it was over all too quickly. However, that being said it was and enjoyable read and I look forward to reading more of Suzanne Lilly’s work

Cover: I just love water covers! I think underwater things have something magical. And this is an enticing shot!

Framework: Headstrong, walled-in girl on the run finds strong, gentle man to break through her defenses and keep her save when her past catches up with her.

Plot: Aspen is on the run and hide from her father who is currently in prison (about to be paroled) for killing her mother. He actually threatened her before being taken away, and she knows that's not empy. So Aspen goes to Honey Creek for a summer job at a lake where she meets town fire angel Colden and his nosy journalist sister Elise. Elise and Aspen's boss Linda both become friends to Aspen, and she and Colden fall in love with eath other. Before she can run away again, her father actually gets out, and comes to get from her what he didn't get from her mother: a valuable coin that's been in the family for generations.

Characters: Aspen was furiously cute, headstrong yet insecure. An intersting mix that happens to real survivors. She was good, even though she tried to run from what would she would always know would catch her.
Colden was the cutest thing. Really. He had a great sense of humor, a fireman, helping whereever he could, a good heart and soul. A guy to die for, really.
Elise, Linda, Margot and Grandma Millie were aresome sidekicks. The granny gets points for family and for being funny, Margot and Linda for their motherly supportiveness, and Elise for her open-minded curiousity and good heart.
Rick, as the villain, was awesomely gross. I would've run from him, too. And yes, I agree with Aspen that he doesn't deserve a second chance.

Overall: Cute characters with a fairly interesting story and some suspense as well as action, but a halfway forced romance.

Area Scan: Flow: 3.5/5 -- Vocab: 3.5/5 -- Plot: 3/5
Heroes: 4/5 -- Villains: 4/5 -- Sidekicks : 4/5
Romance: 3/5 -- Drama: 4/5 -- Action: 4/5 -- Suspense: 2.5/5 -- Humor: 4/5

Original review at Gabic Reads as part of the Untellable Blog Tour.

First of all, I feel like the cover and description of this story are slightly misleading. While the description is accurate for the book, paired with this particular cover led me to believe that this was a novel about mermaids. And while I quite enjoyed this fast-paced contemporary romance, I was disappointed about being misled, though I'm sure that was not done on purpose.

Aspen is hiding from her father. She knows he will not look for her in a small town, so she moves to the tiny town of Honey Creek. There she gets a job at the lodge that resides on the lake. The owner's nephew Colton is a volunteer firefighter. He helps her on her first day in town and BOOM! Instant attraction (read: insta-love).

Aspen is rather sweet, though reluctant to share anything about her past to anybody. All she wants is some peace before she has to move to the next town. She never expected to fall in love. Colton is adorable. He's very persistent and stubborn and has a fear of swimming. Aspen exchanges swimming lessons for driving lessons, seeing as she never learned how.

At first, their relationship was going at a nice pace. It didn't feel forced, but felt sweet, gentle, and slow. Then suddenly, this relationship had moved up three levels when I felt like it was nowhere near moving up one. Colton gets mad that Aspen didn't reveal her secrets right away. They start talking of marriage and children. I was thinking "Wait a minute! Let's slow down and realize that they've been dating for about a month."

This is a short and sweet contemporary romance. If that's the kind of book you're looking for, you should pick this one up :)

Untellable is one of those gems of a find. I say this because I would have never read this book if it were not for YA Bound hosting a blog tour. I had never seen the book or heard about it. I have to say that in all fairness I have been locked in my school cave finishing up summer classes and now that I am done I plan on stalking all my favorite blogs for good reads to read while I am on the beach! I have to say that Untellable is one of those rare gems you read about. I love the cover because it is of a girl swimming. I love summer and swimming and beaches I just love everything about summer so when I saw that this book was on tour I signed up praying I would get a chance to be on this tour.

Untellable is a story that really tore at my gut. We get to meet Aspen who is finally getting out of foster care. She wants to move far away from where she is so she can start a new life and have her past be just that her past. She chooses a small quiet town named Honey Creek, Ohio where the town is small and everyone seems to mind their own business. So off she goes to enjoy her knew found freedom. While there she meets a fire fighter Colton. He is your all american boy who loves his family and will protect them till the end no matter what.

As Aspen and Colton get closer Colton's family opens up to her and takes her under their wings. But soon all that happiness is shattered when Aspen's past comes barreling into town to extract revenge for what she has done. Soon Colton and his family will be in the fight of a lifetime and the reason is to protect Aspen. When the dust settles and all is said and done Aspen will have to explain what happened to her and why she ended up in foster care and why the hell the man chasing her is really her father trying to kill her.

Will she and Colton have their HEA? Or will Colton let Aspen go because she is to much trouble?

First Take -

A unique and interesting story that draws you in for more. The cover gives a dark and intense vibe, which flows well throughout the novel. Aspen has been emancipated and is on the run from her father. She has had a terribly tragic past and is trying to escape from its shadow.

The Characters -

Aspen is a driven individual. She is hardened by the her past yet still an insecure girl that was robbed of a proper childhood. I would have liked her to grow more, which could only happen if the novel was longer.

Colden was the bright light in this novel. He had a great sense of humor and was exactly what Aspen needed. He was someone she could depend on and after living in foster care that is something she has never had the chance to know.

Elise, while you are an interesting character I was not a fan. I couldn't get over the fact that a true friend would never use their friend to get ahead. She fell into the selfish journalist stereotype for me.

Rick, her father, was a terribly scary man. No one should ever have to deal with a guy like that let alone should a guy like that ever have kids. He was an extremely terrifying villain.

The Plot -

I really liked the direction this novel took. It could have been longer and an overall more developed, but for the length it was, I enjoyed it. A valuable coin isn't always something to kill for but it worked will in this story. The romance as a subplot to me felt forced and could have used a lot of work. While Colden was a great character and so was Aspen when a romance is forced it just doesn't come across as well as it should.

Overall -

This story gets three stars, for the interesting plot that kept me in tune to the story and the characters that were just living their lives.

Suzanne Lilly has written a thoughtful and compelling romantic story in Untellable; one that reveals how difficult love can be to find and hold onto when one party has a complicated past.
I found Aspen a determined young woman, despite the baggage she was carrying around with her, and the fact that she had to start her life again in a new town because of the threats which had been placed upon her. Unfortunately because of the length of the book I did not feel that Aspen's character had the time to develop in Honey Creek, although the reader does witness her bravery and humour.
Colton is much easier for the reader to approach as he has lived in Honey Creek for all of his life and is now the fireman. He immediately notices Aspen when she walks into town and wants to know her better. He is the one appointed to teach her to drive and in return she teaches him to swim and thus their friendship develops!
I admit though that my favourite character is Grandma Millie. She probably has the least page time of everyone, but I think she reminds me of my own Grandmother. She has such a kind and pure heart although it is her mind that is slightly confused.
Suzanne Lilly manages to combine her love story with suspense and tension, and I think because Aspen is always on edge we are expecting the worse to happen too!
I especially enjoyed the final few chapters but felt the ending was rushed, and I was surprised when the book ended at 124 pages. However I look forward to reading more of Suzanne Lilly's work.

I love a good story about perseverance. This was such a story. Suzanne Lilly gave us a great character in Aspen Dwyer. Once who was strong and determined, yet scared to live her life because of the threat her past held over her. She didn't trust easily, but when she met Coltan Moraine on the streets of Honey Creek, she found the one man (and his family) that would do anything to make sure she was loved and safe.

Aspen Dwyer was a young woman who was running from her past. You can't blame her based on what happened with her parents. But she was afraid to live. That all changed when she met Coltan and his family. Even with his busy body sister trying to dig into her past, Aspen found a place where she belonged and she found a man who could love her for who she was, nightmares and all.

Coltan was a little bit goofy, but he was big hearted and he knew the instant he whistled down the street at this new girl that she was something.

The romance between these two was sweet. There wasn't a lot of heat there, but the story was more about Aspen learning how to live again and trust people to like and love her for who she was.

This was a fast read, but one that kept you turning the pages to see if Aspen was ever going to break free from her nightmare, while trying to build her new life. While the build up towards Aspen's past was predictable, it was still an enjoyable read to get there.

Aspen Dwyer is in Honey Creek, Ohio for the summer hoping to continue to elude the one man who promised to kill her, her father. She wants to be under the radar, but catches the eye of firefighter Colton Moraine and his journalist in the making sister. While Colton’s sister is relentless in pursuing a story she feels is there, Colton has another agenda he wants Aspen in his life but every chance he gets to get close she shuts off. Will Aspen be able to trust Colton enough to share her darkest of secrets or will she run like she has in the past?

Captivating story, you feel for Aspen from the very beginning she is the epitome of a true fighter. I loved the introduction of Colton to Aspen, priceless and worthy of a few laughs. You are routing for Aspen from page one and hope she finds her happiness in Honey Oak which is filled with enchanting characters.

Untellable was a delightful read! It had a fast paced plot that kept you flipping the pages to figure out what would happen next. I liked Aspen, though she was a bit hard-headed, and I really liked Colton. He was strong and sweet at the same time. I also liked the middle of nowhere setting.

Lilly's writing was good but it left you wanting a bit more. I wanted more of the relationship between Colton and Aspen. I wanted a bit more drama and swoon too. There were a few funny moments though that made me LOL. Though the cover matches the material, it is a bit boring compared to the plot. All-in-all it was a good, quick read, and I would recommend reading it if you like a short romantic YA with a twist of suspense.

This is the second book I've read by Suzanne Lilly, and I LOVED it! Once I started reading, I couldn't put the book down, and I finished it in one night. I adored Aspen and Colton as the main characters. Their POVs were distinctly different, and the chemistry between them was amazing. I also really enjoyed reading another book set in Honey Creek. Lilly is a master at capturing the feel of a small town with all of its intricacies and gossip. Add to that an edge-of-your-seat ending, and I was one entranced reader!

I would definitely recommend this book. I look forward to reading the next book Lilly releases!

4.5 stars. Another great read from Suzanne Lilly! Loved how she lured you in by revealing the underlying story in small bits, not all at once, ruining the mystery. Believable characters, excellent writing, and a story that contains all the elements, from suspense to romance. My only wish, was for a little more of the latter. Looking forward to the next adventure in Honey Creek.
