Dylan, an eight-year-old boy who struggles with reading, has always wanted a dog. When his mother finally consents and lets Dylan and his sister, Laura, pick out a pet at the local humane society, they all fall in love with Hershey, a loveable red-and-black Doberman pinscher.
Dylan quickly learns that taking care of a dog is not always all fun and games. He and Hershey both struggle to learn new skills — Dylan in reading class and Hershey in obedience training.
When Dylan decides to enroll Hershey as a reading dog at the local library, they embark on a new adventure filled with twists and turns that neither could have predicted.
Hershey: A Second Chance is a fun chapter book for struggling readers.
A story about a rescue dog and a boy who has trouble reading. I enjoyed the characters in the book and found the story line believable. The little boy and the dog pull you in so that you don't want to put it down. It would be an excellent story for children to read.
"Hershey: A Second Chance" is the heartwarming tale of a young boy named Dylan and his adopted Doberman, Hershey. Dylan struggles with reading, but Hershey is the perfect reading buddy. When Dylan hears of a children's reading program at the local library, he can't wait to sign Hershey up--until he is told that Dobermans are excluded. Dylan has a huge challenge: convincing the library board that Dobermans can be a child-friendly breed and Hershey should be given permission to take part in the program.
This book is the ideal choice for both avid and reluctant Middle Grade readers. The story is fast-paced, and is sure to hold young readers' interest. Also, "Hershey: A Second Chance" is an uplifting and positive book that combines a love of animals with a love of reading. It's a delightfully different story that I will definitely be recommending to friends with kids in this age group!
Great book for children (though I enjoyed it too!). Kids and dogs and the importance of training. What's not to love? Add in a Doberman and it's perfect!
