Welcome to Lone County, Arkansas, where every corner holds a secret, and the past is never really buried.
Disgraced ex-detective Harper Adams has traded her badge for a desk job at her father's law firm, a move as dull as the small town she's returned to. But things take a turn when a local woman wants to declare her missing husband dead, five years after his mysterious disappearance.
With her father’s firm representing the life insurance company, Harper seizes the opportunity to delve back into her investigative roots. Her search leads her back to James Malcolm, a former crime boss turned tavern owner, who has his finger on the pulse of every shadowed corner. His offer to help with her investigation catches her by surprise.
Why would a former criminal offer his help unless he has something to gain?
Oh my! I was so enjoying this book. I was ready to give it 4 stars, and then the ending blew my mind. Five stars just for that. I was suspicious, to say the least, but it still shocked me. I can’t wait to see what Harper does next. She is a damaged, complicated character. I'm looking forward to seeing how she develops and handles the next mystery. I hope her relationship with James Malcom continues to evolve. There is just something about him that is mysterious and draws you in. There are so many things I am just so ready to read about in the next book!

I love Ms. Swank’s writing. I love her stories, and her characters. I especially love every series she has written in the overall Rose Gardner world. Hers are the only mysteries I will immediately pick up and devour.
And, I suppose this series would be just as amazing IF I hadn’t been such a huge fan of the previous series that lead up to it. James (Skeeter) Malcom was such an enigma in past series and his story was such a tragic one that I was super excited to dive into this series and follow his journey to (hopefully) happiness. And that might still be.
At this point I’m just disappointed in the character of Harper and how she interacts with James. It is the second book in the series and her stereotypes and preconceived judgement of him are just as strong and she is just as nasty to him as everyone else in his life. Gosh, I wanted someone to see him as more and at least give him a chance! But, sadly that doesn’t happen - in fact her opinions and attitude are actually worse than many others. SO…. I’m protective of a favorite character and that ruined some of the reading pleasure for me.
Also, Harper is a raging alcoholic. Now, the author does a fabulous job of describing and showing this condition. Harper understands she has a serious problem but she just can’t overcome the call and ends up trying to get through the day half drunk and bingeing at night into black-out benders. SO… although sad and compelling to read, is she an MC that I love and want to follow? Hecka no! Especially since James is watching and understanding this all because his own childhood was a horrible mess with a violent drunk for a father.
See my problem? I LOVE the world, I love the MMC, I love the author’s writing and her mysteries… BUT….*shrugs*. We’ll see.
Well Denise did it again, had me yelling at her and tossing my Kindle after the last page! That’s because I’m so invested in these characters and am impatient for the next book after that hook of an ending.
Harper is not your typical heroine. At this point she is a functioning alcoholic and while she does acknowledge to herself that she has a problem, she’s not ready to do anything about it. She is fighting so many inner demons from the past to more recent traumas and events. Denise does a fantastic job of getting you into Harper’s head and feeling what she is going through. This just gives her character so much room to change and grow. I’m excited to be on this journey with her.
I love that Harper ends up teaming up with James as she works to solve a 5-year-old cold case of a missing man. Harper struggles with trusting James and struggles some more that she does mostly trust him. I loved getting more James in this book. The mystery is intriguing, kept me guessing and shocked when secrets are exposed.
I hope this series continues for many, many books. It has so much potential and room for a lot of character growth. Don’t hesitate.... read it now!.

Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh! It feels silly to gush over such a sophisticated book but I can’t help but GUSH! This is easily one of my favorite reads of the past few years!! The main character, Harper, is such a fantastic character. She is incredibly flawed and fighting multiple demons and traumas. And I hate to say, she’s not particular endearing as a heroine, but you can’t help but root for her success at every turn.
Her partner for this mystery, James, is a morally grey hottie. For those that know him from Rose you will enjoy seeing him back in his detective element without the pressure of being a crime lord. I don’t know how to describe it but he’s more laid back in Lone County and you can’t help but fall in love with him (all over again for some of us).
The story was fantastic! I genuinely was surprised at every development and there were so many plot points. Rose fans, we saw LOTS of familiar names and you will be very excited for all the crossovers! The main mystery was solved, after a small amount of action, but then it ended on a cliffhanger that will have you gaping!
Let me just say that this one left me reeling! O.M.G!
It was so good, and I love how James and Harper teamed up for this investigation. There is great banter, and humor between the two. I love it!! I found myself looking forward to their interactions.
The case that Harper worked on was equally as intriguing and I couldn’t figure out who was calling the shots. Prior characters are mentioned and I found myself giddy with anticipation.
I am trying to patiently wait for the next one. I think this is one that all the Skeeter (James Malcolm) fans will love!!
If you love complex characters, banter, and mystery suspense definitely check this one out. I loved it!!
OMG!! Long Gone: Harper Adams Mystery Book 2 has surpassed all of my expectations. I have learned to expect DGS’ series to have well developed plots filled with suspense, twists and turns. I expect solid characters with real life struggles and flaws. Ones that I can love, feel empathy for, cheer on or just dislike. Harper Adams, a disgraced Little Rock police officer, is back at home struggling with alcoholism and trust issues. She not only doesn’t know who to trust but her mother is constantly belittling her and adding to Harper’s issues. Currently working at her father’s law firm filing, one of the partners asks Harper to investigate a client’s husband who has been missing for 5 years. Is he dead or did he take off? His wife wants answers. Harper’s investigation puts her into danger as she looks for answers. She is suspicious of Detective Jones with the Lone County Sheriff’s Department who is being cooperative and the offers of help from James Malcolm and Carter Hale. Are they helping her or setting her up. Long Gone does not disappoint. This is a fantastic read.

A fan-freaking-tastic book #2 of a new promising series written by my favourite author! It never ceases amaze me how Ms.Swank always surprises me with any new book even though I have such high expectations and I’m good at “investigating” mysteries myself but there’s always something else that leaves me jaw dropped when reading DGS mystery books. This second book in the Harper Adams mysteries surpassed all my expectations and more importantly I loved it much more if it’s even possible. I love the Damaged Duo - Harper Adams and James Malcolm. I’ve never stopped loving James from the Rose Gardner mysteries and here he comes again. Harper is quite new character and even more flawed than you might expect but her tragic and traumatic experiences made her what we see as she never really got past all that and half broken. Alcoholism in all its ugly glory. That all shows us the realistic and human being who needs help with this complex character. I can see a lot of growth coming in the future books. Loved the mentions of characters from Rose series tied up in crossovers with the main mystery Harper and James teamed up to solve together. Absolutely loved their banter and sarcastic humour and kindness at the same time. Can’t wait for the third book! Love the hook for the next book at the end of this one. I don’t agree with other readers who say it’s a cliffhanger. There’s a big difference between the two.
Book besties! When I say I devoured this book, I’m talking I ate and left no crumbs!
One of my greatest joys is to see James Malcolm between the sheets again. How befitting that he has a tavern and is locked in on all the shady scenes in town.
Swank has done it again and I am over the moon! It is full of mystery, suspense, humor, witty banter, and a plot twist I never saw coming! I can’t get enough of these characters and I look forward to the next book.
Man I missed James Malcolm. But I think he may have met his match in Harper Adams. Tons of twist and turns. Completely unexpected suspects. But the ending? Holy crap.

I am here for Harper’s series and this did not disappoint!!! I’m dying for the next one after the hook at the end!
I love Harper and James teaming up and working together throughout Long Gone. Their banter made me chuckle and seeing more of James’ new life while still getting snippets of the man we know from before is so fun. The mystery is good and even tied in some blasts from the past. I did not see where this was going at all. I love that Harper is rough around the edges and isn’t a perfect main character. I’m looking forward to her dealing with her demons throughout the series. Then we have James, just continuing to be my favorite helpful a**hole ever. I’ll never tire of that man. Excited for more to come!
Book two in the Harper Adams series was packed with suspense and mystery. This is book two in the series and I highly recommend reading book one first. For those who have read Swank’s Rose Gardener series, you’ll love being reacquainted with some characters from Henryetta! As readers have come to expect from Denise, these characters are flawed and authentically human. Harper is still struggling with the childhood trauma of losing her sister. She is tasked with searching for a man who has been missing more than five years. Her search for answers leads to more questions and her path once again crosses with James Malcom and his attorney Carter Hale. Harper has many conflicting feelings about working with James and that internal conflict adds so much to the storyline. She doesn’t know if she wants to trust James, but can she really turn away his assistance? And James…he’s still the James readers met in the Rose Gardener series, but he’s also different. The ending of this book left my jaw dropped…I can’t believe I have to wait so long for more of Harper!
This book had me feeling all of the feelings! It was oddly strange seeing James get close to another woman. At the beginning I was like “No way he can’t move on!” But towards the end I became okay with it. If it happens I’ll be okay with it! But I hope Harper gets help first. The story was full of twists and a lot of stuff I didn’t see coming. A lot of Fenton County name dropping which was really exciting. And talk about an ending that will rip your heart out!!!! I wasn’t ready for that at all!!.

Oh my…Denise did it again. Long Gone is the second book in the Harper Adams mystery series and it was fantastic. I didn’t want to put it down.
Harper Adams and James Malcolm team up to solve a missing persons case. There were so many twists and turns, I didn’t know what to expect. I enjoyed seeing some more of Malcolm’s new life.
Long Gone is a wonderful read…you won’t be disappointed.
I am loving Harper Adams! She is emotional, damaged and definitely trying to get it together. This is the second book in the series and it is so good! Once I started I didn't stop. Harper has started working at her fathers law firm and is asked to investigate a case. She got her PI license so she is ready! She once again teams up with James Malcolm to solve the crime. Some of James past is revealed (if you read the Rose Gardener series you already know it) and more of his motivations are revealed. I adore Carter Hale and love when he makes an appearance, him and his witty banter with pretty much anyone! Harpers dad is being shady. Harper is struggling with alcohol but she feels so real in this book. I'm really hoping in the next one, she can get some control. Love this book and you wont be disappointed in reading it!.

I liked Harper ok at the end of the last book, but so much more after this one. She is still drinking and didn't magically just stop. She's got her demons and I can't wait to watch her fight her way back. It was refreshing to see it done in a realistic, but not totally depressive way. And James, all I wanted was more James. I lived for his scenes. I'm beyond excited that Rose wasn't the end for him. I loved this one and am so ready for more!
Denise, I am in awe of you. Your world building, character development, and intricate story telling is some of the best I’ve ever read. This series is everything I didn’t know I needed, and THAT CLIFFHANGER. I am so ready for book 3.
I can’t adequately review this book without spoiling the entire thing, so just know………… I am obsessed with James, always have been. And Harper is fixing to be my favorite DGS fmc with how beautifully flawed she is. She’s so real…. And I love her and James’ dynamic. They work so well together.
I love falling in love with a new series! This book is amazing and I love all the tie-ins to the Rose Gardner Investigation series, as well. Just getting that little peak and hearing a little information about beloved characters is a beautiful thing. I'm also ecstatic that we are getting more of James Malcolm and the glimpses of Skeeter that still exist. I have no doubt this series will be one of the many that I re-read on a constant basis.
This is the second book in the Harper Adams mystery series and it needs to be read in order. Ms. Swank does do a good job of giving back story from the first book, so you wouldn’t be lost if just jumping in now, but I still recommend reading the previous one first.
Whew where to begin? This book had my heart rate up more than once. It also had me very nostalgic for her previous earlier Rose Gardner books as the story line has some cross over characters and past story lines that crept into this plot. This book has basically come full circle stemming like little off chutes from the other books. Due to that, I highly recommend reading the Rose Gardner series first as to truly understand the backstory better.
One thing I’m loving about this series is that Harper stands on her own as a main character. I haven’t found myself comparing her to pervious female leads by this author as I was first afraid I would. Harper is smart, resourceful and and all around mess at the moment. We’re introduced to her in a point of her life where ‘it gets worse before it gets better’ and some of this book is still in the getting worse phase. She’s facing an uphill climb in her life and the journey along the way keeps you flipping the page.
Another main page flipper for me is James Malcom. I suppose I’ll always be ‘team James’, so I have throughly enjoyed seeing him have an active role in the book. As Harper is getting to know more about his past and know the him now, it feels like reconnecting with an old friend…that is if that friend was someone you definitely don’t want as an enemy and who keeps more secretes than a priest.
The ending, I for sure did not see coming. I had suspected something of the sort might have happened earlier on, but had managed to be misdirected enough to still be caught off guard when it actually did happen. There’s definitely quite a lot to begin the next book with, that’s for sure.
Harper Adams is now a P.I. An attorney at her father’s law firm, where she works in filing, asks her to look into a 5 year old cold case. A missing man’s wife wants him declared dead so she can get his life insurance payout.
She gets help again from tavern owner James Malcolm. He is a former crime boss with connections and an interest in this particular case.
My Thoughts:
This is book 2 in the Harper Adams Mystery series. Each book focuses on a different case but to understand Harper’s relationship with the side characters this series needs to be read in order.
This story made me want to reread the Rose Gardner Mysteries and Rose Gardner Investigations. You do not need to read either series before reading this book. Characters from those series are mentioned in Long Gone and it would be helpful if you have read them already.
I am really enjoying Harper. She needs to face her past instead of pretending she is fine with pretending it hasn’t happened. The case in Long Gone almost seemed too easy but I still enjoyed it. Even though the missing person piece of the case was solved, I have a feeling other pieces of it will be solved in upcoming books. This is something I love about Swank. Each book is a different case but there is a bigger case that is being solved throughout all the whole series.
As much as I like James “Skeeter” Malcolm and Harper together, I have wanted her and Hale together since book 1. I can’t wait to see where things go in book 3.
Thank you Denise Grover Swank for the ARC of Long Gone.
What a palate cleanser… I’d just read a book that was meh and decided that a Denise Grover Swank’s Long Gone was going to jump to the top of my TBR list. Denise Grover Swank thrilled again.
Following Book 1’s intro of Harper Adams, Long Gone was even better. We know Harper’s backstory, we know her friends. Honestly, I had no idea what could come next without seeming like just coincidental plot armor but Denise a Grover Swank delivered. Harper is in hell doing filing at her dad’s law firm, but what else is a disgraced former detective going to do? When an opportunity arises to investigate a missing person, Harper jumps in.
Unlike the 28 and a Half Wishes series where Rose is an undeniably moral person, Harper has some rougher edges. She’s relying too much on alcohol in place of a serious need of therapy to deal with her past. She’s smart but not always thinking clearly. Harper and James Malcolm partner up with neither of them honest or trusting the other. I love their interactions and equally want to smack them both during them. There’s tension of all types between them and Malcolm’s inclusion in this storyline and hints to the 28 and a Half series are a treat.
Excellent writing combined with flawed characters and family dynamics made this a fantastic read. There are some editing errors that were a little distracting and one plot point that was more obvious than it should have been but reasonable for the character. Even with those 2 points, I’m giving Long Gone 5 stars. This book was the high point of my weekend, the best in my recent reads, and I’m already looking forward to Book 3.
I'm going to try and write a spoiler free review but it's going to be hard.
We sure did learn a lot with this book. Some of the them we knew from reading the Rose Gardner series. Those who haven't read the Rose Gardner series are sure missing a LOT of context. If I were you, I'd stop now and go read them. You won't be disappointed.
This book was a nail biter of a read. Once I got into it, I sure didn't want to let it go. Not for work, nor sleep. I had to tell myself to slow down and not read ahead so I wouldn't miss anything. I love stories like that. There is so much intrigue in the way these stories are written that they are always a delight. I find myself trying to figure things out and see if I come to the same conclusion that the main character does. It's a lot of fun.
I will say this though; I don't yet know how I feel about Harper Adams. I'm not sure I like her but I'm sure I dislike her. She hasn't grabbed me yet as the author's other main characters have. I'm not sure what it is yet about her that is making me feel this way. But I'm definitely going to keep reading this series, especially after that cliffhanger!
Denise’s stories grip you from the first to last word. I really enjoyed book one in this series but this book is spectacular. We are left with a major cliff hanger but so excited for the next book.
Harper is such a complex character that continues to fight her own demons, her past and is determined to find justice for others. I love how strong, vulnerable and fearless she is. She doesn’t take crap from anyone and will put you in your place without fear.
James is full of mystery but Harper knows she needs him. Helen is tough, direct and a bit of a jerk. The banter, dialogue and a bit of sizzle between these two is fantastic!
This story is so complex and twist…Denise does an amazing job with the detail she provides regarding the suspects, the investigation and the emotions of the characters.
This is a book that you will binge read because you will not be able to put the book down. Hold on, it will take you in amazing reading adventure.
If it had been better edited, I’d have given it 5 stars.
I love DGS and this book still holds her as one of my favorite authors. That being said, this book desperately needed to be revised for grammatical and spelling errors. Normally, I can over look things like that, but it was so significant in this book. There were several sentences I had to reread a few times to grasp what was being said. There were missing words, wrong words, no words throughout the whole book. This also isn’t the first book of hers I’ve noticed this in, but it’s been by far the worst one. The fact that it was $5.99 you would think it’d be better edited. Nonetheless, the story was really good, as always.
The first book, I was a little skeptical of but now that I've read this one, I am looking forward to the rest of the series. I've come to learn two things through this book. One, this author loves the slow build but at the end likes to yank the rug out from under you. Two, when the rug is yanked out from under you it's not because you didn't see it coming, it's because you didn't see the way she revealed it coming. I mean come on to end the book on are you kidding me....I need Harper's reaction...I need to know where the main characters go from here...I need the third book.
Five Excellent Stars for this next greatest mystery of DGS!!! If you loved the Rose Gardner series, you’ll love this series too!!
Harper Adams used to be a cop for Little Rock PD… she found her way home after a situation that has made her question everything about herself, from her instincts, to her morals, to life in general. So when her current employer asks her to look into the disappearance of Hugo Burton from five years ago, she jumps in with both feet. While she may not be a police officer any longer, she still enjoys investigating.
As she starts her investigation, she finds herself slightly entangled with the notorious James Malcom. When they realize they have two different reasonings for investigating but have the same end goal, they decide to run parallel with one another in what they find.
I will never be quiet about the fact that I am #TeamJames so seeing him in action again has my heart doing all kinds of things.
In true DGS fashion, we do get bits and pieces of the mystery over the course. And just when you think you know whodunit, another clue surfaces that takes them out of the running. The ending leaves you on a “Oh My Gosh!” moment, but I am here for it!
Long Gone is ACTION PACKED PERFECTION! This story was engaging, thrilling and so very ENTERTAINING! I was completely hooked. I, in fact, cancelled my plans because I just couldn't STOP! I read this one through from the VERY beginning all the way to VERY end. And what an ending it was!
Denise Grover Swank is a MASTER at delivering a spellbinding, unpredictable, breathtaking RIDE! These characters speak to your soul. I am such a Harper Adam's fan and I just need MORE of her.
I COMPLETELY recommend this goosebump inducing, ENTHRALLING , gripping mystery!
This book was full of suspense and surprises. Harper Adams returns working for her father’s law firm to pay the bills. She’s still at odds with her mother who is going through a divorce from her father. Harper has since taken the PI test and is now a licensed private investigator. One of the partners in the law firm hires her to find the missing husband of his client. Harper teams up again with James Malcolm to solve the case of Hugo Burton who’s been missing for five years. Really a good read.
I was lucky enough to be chosen to receive an advancd copy. Lone gone was great suspenseful. I couldn't put it down and finished it in one day. This is the 2nd book in her Harper Adams mystery series. Harper has moved back to her hometown and is struggling with an alcohol addiction. She jumps at the chance to investigate a missing person's case instead of working in the file room at her dad's law firm. There are lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing. I love that James Malcom and Carter Hale are old characters along with the new. Rose Garder Mysteries was my favorite series, and having Malcom and Carter in this series brings back memories. Love the cliffhanger ending. I can't wait until the next book can't wait fast enough.
I need more! I am loving this series so much. I love how it is becoming more intertwined with the Rose Gardner series, but that it is still its own series. I feel like Harper is a relatable and realistic main character with her issues and flaws. I thought that the author does a great job describing her issues with alcohol. I'm glad James is featured more because he's one of my favorite characters in the Rose Gardner series. I enjoy reading about all of the characters and learning more about everyone's secrets. There is so much excitement throughout the whole book that I didn't want to stop reading. Once I got to the end, I was bummed that it was already over. And that cliffhanger is definitely keeping me hooked. I am looking forward to the next one in the fall!
This was an absolute page turner. Denise did it again!
I love seeing James again in this new series.
Harper has a lot going on personally, but I think it’s part of what makes her so interesting. She’s such a multi-faceted character and I think she’s a good partner for James.
I hope there are more Harper Adam’s books, because these are great.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
