A former horse trainer and computer programmer, Brian Rathbone used his old world knowledge and love of fantasy fiction to create The World of Godsland fantasy series, which begins with The Dawning of Power trilogy.
This story wets your appetite for the Dawning Power books. However, it just seems to be incomplete. I almost wish I hadn't read this before reading book #1.
Wayward Spirits by Brian Rathbone is a prelude to The Dawning of Power series. Benjin and Wendel embark on a quest to Godsland after being told by a mysterious stranger that the world was in danger and needed a hero.
This short story started out good, but missed the mark. We meet Benjin and Wendel and we follow on their quest, but then the story stops. I thought it would be picked up in the first book, Call of the Herald, so I purchased the book to find out about Benjin and Wendel's journey. Sadly, Call of the Herald did not give me any insight into what these characters went through on their journey.
You can read my review of Call of the Herald here:
This is a prequel short story that is designed to give you a taster for the full length novel. However, although it gives some idea of the main characters, there isn't enough here to make me want to read the next book along. It is well written, no doubt about that. It's just a bit too short for me, and lacks any hook to the characters or the world.
Got stuck on Scribd to their select audio books, I suppose I listened to too many this month. So I saw this series available to me and figured I would start it. This is just a quick listen, maybe it should have been the prologue of the book instead of its own book. The narrator was great. This did not really offer much outside of the "you have been selected as hero".
This was a short story about the father of the MC of The Dawning of Power series and how he ended up in the Greatlands. It kind of parallels her journey though it's not nearly as death defying. It wasn't spectacular but it was short.
This book from what i read is a prequel, so knowing that about the book i assume to get back story on characters and get to want to get excited about this series. But its so short its missing the bang of the story line. Two kids going on a journey the end.
A very good quick read A very good quick read that is a good lead in too the series. I would recommend it to anyone as a place too start. Enjoy reading. 2014
This was a quick audiobook prequel about two misfit best friends Benjin and Wendel who set off on a mission to Godsland. This was a great introduction to the series. Can’t wait to read the rest!
It was okay, but wholly unnecessary. This story doesn't add anything to the series and was simply a nod to the fans of two of the older characters in their youth, nothing more.
I read the first book in this series, Call of the Herald, some years back, but not enough stands out in my memory for this little prelude to relate. (Except for the big cavern and underground lake; those I remember.) This is more a prologue than a standalone story, and there's not really enough here to draw me back into the series right now, with so many other books in the TBR pile. Except for the author's good, solid writing; even with a few added or missing words here and there, it's comfortable reading. If you're looking for a new fantasy series, a long one that can hold onto you for a while, you might give this novella and the first book a try; they're both free.
I initially put this as one star then changed it to two stars as I felt I was being a bit unfair on the author. There was nothing wrong with this story to be honest. It was well written, not too descriptive, a decent attempt to develop a bit of character which is not easy in a 15 page book. It is the story of two boys who want to be heroes getting ready to run away from their dull lives on a quest to change the world.
Basically the only reason I marked it down is because the story itself just did not appeal to me. The fantasy genre is hit and miss a lot of the time for me and this just wasn't my thing.
So if you like fantasy books don't let me put you off!
This is a very short story. I thought it was a full length prequel but it wasn't. In fact, most of the book is actually the first book of the series. But it does give a little, all be it very little, look into the series. I would have liked to see more of Wendel & Benjin's lives before Catrin and what happened to her mother.
A brilliant short story which preludes the book 'Dawning of Power'. Would definitely recommend reading this as it gives an excellent insight into the characters and their backgrounds going forward into the rest of the series which I am looking forward to reading.
