What is a mystery? It is story based on a mystic aspect of life. Death is a mystery. What really happens at the time of death? No one could ever answer this question so far. Science has so far succeeded in putting forth a theory for the destruction of the human body. But human is not only the body, it is the mind within, the soul within, it has feelings, lust… Do they extinct with death? Or do they linger in the universe? No one has been successful in answering these questions. The common people are always attracted towards the dark secret of life. Yet, how far true it is from the scientific point of view? It is again beyond arguments. In general, the stories based on facts are considered to be artistic while those based on mystery are supposed to be without any artistic value.

About the author
Ratnakar Matkari
54 books155 followersMatkari's first work, the one-act play Wedi Manase,was presented in 1955 on All India Radio in Mumbai.His play Pahuni was presented the next year at another venue.
Matkari worked as a columnist for newspapers and magazines in the 1970s. He wrote the column Soneri Savalya n Apale Mahanagar for four years.
Matkari's 98 works thus far include 33 plays, 8 collections of his one-act plays, 18 books of his short stories, 3 novels, a book of poems for children, and 14 plays and three collections of plays for children.His works include Gudha Katha --mysteries—for adults which maintain realism.Matkari wrote a few plays in Indian languages other than Marathi.Many of Matkari's novellas have been adapted for the stage.

अप्रतिम !
रत्नाकर मतकरी लिखित हा गूढकथा संग्रह पुन्हा पुन्हा वाचावा असा आहे. प्रस्तावनेतच गूढकथेचे प्रयोजन सांगितलेले आहे. माणसाला अज्ञात असलेल्या सर्व गोष्टी या गूढ समजल्या जातात. (केवळ भुतं-खेत, चकवा, पिशाच्च असलेल्या कथा भयकथा प्रकारात येतात. नारायण धारपांच्या
बहुतेक कथा या भयकथा आहेत.) मतकरींच्या कथा केवळ भुतांच्या नाहीत तर त्या गूढतेच्या अनेक पैलूंना स्पर्श करतात.
'कबंध' कथेत नायक भूत समजून स्वतःच्याच अपराधीपणाच्या भावनेला बळी पडतो तर 'श्रीमंत' कथेतला नायक पैश्यासाठी स्वतःचा आत्मा गमावतो. 'द्रष्टा' कथेत भविष्यकथन करणारा वेडगळ तरुण भेटतो तर 'लांबणीवर' मध्ये मुलीच्या लग्नासाठी थेट मरण लांबणीवर टाकलेला बाप. 'असाही एक कलावंत' हि या संग्रहातली शेवटची आणि बहुदा सर्वोत्तम कथा. एखाद्याचा प्राण घेण्यातही कला असू शकते हे सांगणारा नायक कधी मनोरुग्ण वाटतो तर कधी तत्वज्ञ तर कधी कलावंत ! मतकरी कथेच्या शेवटी वाचकाला विचारांच्या चक्रव्युव्हात गुंतवून टाकतात. कथा गूढ असल्या तरी त्या वास्तविकतेच्या जवळ वाटतात; फँटसी वाटत नाहीत. कबंध हा मतकरींनी मराठी साहित्याला दिलेल्या सर्वोत्तम देणग्यांपैकी एक आहे आणि तो प्रत्येक मराठी वाचकाने वाचावा असा आहे. ज्यांना गूढकथांची आवड आहे त्यांना उत्तम विचारखाद्य पुरवेल आणि ज्यांना आवड नाही त्यांच्यात ती निर्माण करेल.

15th Ratnakar Matkari book I've completed till now.
In all the recent reviews I've written that the stories didn't pack that much punch as ' खेकड़ा ' & '
मध्यरात्रिचे ...' had.
I believe I read those books in childhood & hence had so much effect on me. Now, while on the verge of becoming a postgraduate, these recent Mr. Matkari's stories aren't having the same impact.
Still, I'd still choose him as my favourite Marathi author any time.
Coming to the book, I loved the titular story 'कबंध', बबल्या रवल्याचा पिटारा & एक माणुस आणि एक पशु.
The helplessness Malti must have felt in कबंध, the wife of Bablya being put forcefully in the trunk & then thrown in the fire in बबल्या रवल्याचा पिटारा left me with an uneasy feeling for a long time.
Mr. Matkari bringing one of the oldest character horror genres has- Werewolf into Marathi literature through his story एक माणुस आणि एक पशु made this story too much thrilling for me.
All in all, enjoyable collection!

Felt much different than the last time I read it (which was somewhere around the age of 15). A good horror novel which seemed a lot better but now only gets a "hmm.. meh!" out of me. Though the author Ratnakar Matkari is one of the few influential horror story writers in Marathi (along with Narayan Dharap IMO) who has shaped this genre for Marathi readers out there.

Another fine book by Matakari. Read 3-4 books in line. feeling what I should felt after reading this book. :)
