About the author

Matkari's first work, the one-act play Wedi Manase,was presented in 1955 on All India Radio in Mumbai.His play Pahuni was presented the next year at another venue.

Matkari worked as a columnist for newspapers and magazines in the 1970s. He wrote the column Soneri Savalya n Apale Mahanagar for four years.

Matkari's 98 works thus far include 33 plays, 8 collections of his one-act plays, 18 books of his short stories, 3 novels, a book of poems for children, and 14 plays and three collections of plays for children.His works include Gudha Katha --mysteries—for adults which maintain realism.Matkari wrote a few plays in Indian languages other than Marathi.Many of Matkari's novellas have been adapted for the stage.

"निर्मनुष्य" हा काही एक साधासुधा गूढकथासंग्रह नाही. प्रत्यक्ष आणि वास्तवाच्या पलीकडे लपलेले, थोडेसे भयावह पण तरीही थोडेसे उत्कंठावर्धक आणि काहीसे अनाकलनीय असे काल्पनिक विश्व लेखक रत्नाकर मठकरी प्रत्येक कथेत बिनबोभाट उभे करतात ! परंतु या कथांचा हेतू फक्त भय निर्माण करणे असा वाटत नाही, लेखक त्यातून काही भाष्य करू पाहतात कधी मानवी स्वभावाबद्दल, कधी राजकारणाबद्दल तर कधी सामान्य माणसाच्या हतबलतेबद्दल. "निर्मनुष्य" वाचताना स्टीफन किंग च्या लेखनशैलीची नक्कीच आठवण होते ! प्रगल्भ आणि तरीही मनोरंजनात्मक असा "निर्मनुष्य" ४/५ च्या नक्कीच तोडीचा आहे.

यात 9 कथा आहेत. सगळ्याच वैशिष्ट्यपूर्ण आणि वैविध्यपूर्ण आहेत. पुस्तकाचे शीर्षक असलेली "निर्मनुष्य" ही कथा खूप थरारक आणि भीतिदायक आहे. "शनचरी" आणि "प्रार्थना" या कथा थोड्या सारख्या धाटणीच्या आहेत आणि खूप घाबरवून अंगावर काटा आणतात. तसेच "पण नंतर मात्र" आणि "दुरुस्ती" या दोन्ही कथा भविष्याचा पूर्व आभास आणि ते बदलण्याचा प्रयत्न या थीम वर आधारित आहेत आणि खूप छान आहेत. "पर्यायी" ही शेवटची कथा नारायण धारपांच्या "ग्रहण" सारखी आहे म्हणजे दोन समांतर पण वेगवेगळे भविष्य असलेली दोन किंवा जास्त विश्वे ह्या संकल्पनेवर आधारलेली आहेत. व्हायरस ही दीर्घकथा तर अतिशय अभिनव संकल्पनेवर आधारित आहे. राजकारणातील लोकांच्या मेंदूत खरे बोलण्याचा व्हायरस घुसतो, पण "तो" व्हायरस नेमका कोण आहे आणि तो मेंदूत कसा "घुसतो" ते या कथेत वाचतांना प्रत्यक्ष अनुभवल्याशिवाय कळणार नाही आणि वाचतांना थरार अनुभवायला मिळतो. "गर्भ" ही कथा कलियुगातील भीषण सामाजिक वास्तव आपल्या समोर ठेवते तर "भूमिका" या कथेचा आपल्याला शेवट सहज ओळखता येतो तसेच पुढे काय होणार याचा सहज अंदाज बांधता येतो. एकूणच "निर्मनुष्य" हा कथासंग्रह "फाशी बखळ", "संभ्रमच्या लाटा" या कथासंग्रहांसरखा पूर्णपणे हॉरर किंवा भयानक नाही पण यात विषय विविधता आहे.

Collection of excellent thrilling stories. Ratnakar Matkari always starts with a normal world, introduces a supernatural or at least "not-normal" element and ends with a shock. Sometimes that shock was predictable, sometimes not. But it's a writing quality that I've been missing, or at least searching for sometime in Marathi. I'm looking forward to more stories from Matkari.

All stories in this book are worth reading..Nirmanushya right from start captures readers mind, Stories are contemporary & talks about the current condition of our society. It vividly highlights the villainous side of people. Evil is hidden in the minds of human somewhere, every now & then it tries to come out of its shell & people start acting like a beast. Nirmanushya, Garbh, Virus, Prarthana, Durusti etc..I personally like "Shanchari" where unexpectedly a helpless & sufferer women uses witchcraft power to punish corrupt & wicked village head, hence, its not a typical/routine story. "Bhoomika" is also a great story. Overall an interesting book..
