Lily Saunders sees her family falling apart. Her father is deserting her, and her mother is drinking more and more. Even sarcasm can't help Lily. When she thinks her best friend, Andy Green, will help her, she discovers how his blinding jealousy will mess everything up.
And then Gabe Green comes back home. She thinks it'll be like always between them—sarcasms and curses thrown at each other—but she's mistaken. He's different, and understands right away the problems she's trying to keep for herself.
But even if he's there for her, making her fall hard, they both know it'll end soon. Because at their age, you can't expect forever. Right?
Stephanie Witter, in her twenties, lives in France where she comes up with book ideas on her laptop, notebook or phone. When she's not writing the day away, she likes visiting museums or shopping to add another nail polish to her already huge collection. She's also unable to resist the appeal of new books, even when she knows she can't possibly have the time to read yet another one. She's happy to have a to-read pile so high she can never put a dent into it even if she tries her best.
As a teenager Lily Saunders faces problems like all teens. But when her mom and dad decide to divorce her world starts falling apart around her.
Lily’s mom starts drinking away her problems; her dad doesn’t seem to give a damn about her or her mother and Lily is left to deal with everything. She has a best friend Andy Green who have stand by her through life. But when Lily approaches Andy to find comfort her best friend is pushing her away and forces her to bend to his crew of friends or be left out.
All alone Lily finds comfort, support and understanding from someone she least expected it from, her childhood bully Gabe Green. Gabe is Andy’s brother and the two of them doesn’t get along. When Andy sees Lily hanging around with Gabe his real reasons starts to show. But Lily’s life takes a huge fall and she fights heartbreak around every corner. Can she win this battle? But even more can she survive Gabe Green?
What an amazing story. Lily’s the odd girl out that doesn’t take crap from anybody. Her best tactic is hitting home with sarcasm. But when Gabe comes into the picture she is finding it hard to keep her defense up around him. Gabe was the perfect dark hero. With troubles of his own, the mix between the two was electrifying.
This was such an incredible read. If more than five stars could be awarded it would be to this novel. I found myself crying in a lot of places, and screaming in frustration with others. Stephanie Witter has packed in so many emotions it turns into a wild roller coaster ride. Perfect execution and the ending was perfect. From the news I have heard about this fabulous new author we are just starting to see her wonderful talents with great novels. She has captured my heart and attention! I recommend this book to everyone, what a fabulous read this was.
Quote from the book: “Well, you’re not wrong. I was afraid to die from boredom around you,”
It is commonly known that women mature faster than men when they get to puberty. And this is the case in Lily Saunders and Gabe Green´s story ....
I enjoyed this story so much. There was so much understanding and chemistry between the main characters. They both have smart mouths and the sarcasm is everywhere. I laughed and cried when I had to. Some parts where hilarious and others were simply depressing. When Gabe heads to college Lily is fifteen so for him she is still a girl not a woman yet. When Gabe get back he is twenty and Lily with seventeen years old she looks stunning and she´s more mature. So attraction is a bitch and starts pulling each others strings.
Lily and Andy Green are best friends since kindergarten. She has to endure the problems in her home. Her parents are constantly fighting and insulting each other, so she seeks her escape by spending time in Andy´s house. At the beginning of Summer vacation she heads to Andy´s and is greeted at the door by her Nemesis Gabe Green a.k.a. Andy´s big brother, three years older than her.
Since they were kids, Gabe constantly mocked, insulted and messed up with her and his little brother. They can´t stand each other. But something changes...
After two years, Gabe has come back from college to stay for Summer vacations. Nobody knows why but Gabe has a secret. It is something that made him be the way he is now. Different. A changed man.
Lily fights with Andy after refusing to go to a band play at the local place because she can´t stand the cool kids and the cheerleaders. She tells Andy he only wants to go there because he is afraid to lose his throne as a popoular guy because his brother is in town.
Lily feels bad and heads to see the band play, and when she spots Andy he doesn't even acknowledge her so she sits at the bar. He realizes the guy sitting at her side is Gabe. They talk and he tells her Andy is interested in her but she says they are only friends. Gabe wants to prove a point and kisses Lily. Andy of course gets mad and demands an explanation from Lily and tells her he doesn't know who she is anymore and leaves her in the parking lot outside the place where the band was playing. Gabe appears and says his brother is jealous.
Lily has no one to talk to about her parents issues so she finds refugee with Gabe. He tells her the reason he came back home for vacations. They spend some quality time together and begin bonding to the point that they find support in each other and something else starts to grow between them.
Happily ever afters and love don't last forever when you are this young right? So what will happen when he goes back to school? He´s been known to be a player after all...
Talk about an intense, in-your-face, emotionally charged read! By My Side by Stephanie Witter is that and more! Lily’s world is coming down all around her and her super prickly, sarcastic façade is slipping. Her parents have divorced, her mother is drinking herself do death, her father has completely distanced himself, her best friend has suddenly cut her off, so where can Lily find some comfort and a place to feel safe? Why not with the lifelong pain-in-the-neck, evil brother of her best friend? Makes. Total. Sense. Okay, maybe not, but that’s what happens when Gabe comes home from college for the summer, sadder, quieter, more mature and most definitely attracted to Lily. Lily even trusts the ‘new’ Gabe with her private art, which for Lily is like letting someone read her diary, because this has always been how she pours her feelings out. Still, Lily misses Andy, her best friend. Their relationship has fallen completely to ruins, and jealousy is the reason. Somewhere along the way, Andy’s feeling for Lily have changed and to him, once again, Gabe comes out on top. Can she bring the brothers back together without losing them both? After all, she needs them each in a different way. Then, just when there is some good in her life, once again, she is beaten down when she wakes up to a real life nightmare that she couldn’t prevent. How much more can Lily take? What about when Gabe goes back to college? Will he still want her? Will he even remember her? Lily’s own insecurities could cost her Gabe, but maybe she needs to heal herself before she can be any good for anyone. This is an emotional roller coaster, a real three hankie read for me. Stephanie Witter has colored a world full of the realities of pain, love, loss and gain in a beautiful coming of age young adult romance that I can’t praise enough!

I have to say I really enjoyed this novel By My Side by Stephanie Witter, the writing was great, the story flowed well and I enjoyed all the characters. Like most romance novels, boy meets girl, they have some issues then they get there happy every after. This story felt different to me. I really enjoyed how the story was based on what was going on in their lives and not entirely around the romance. I mean it is a romance novel none the less but I enjoyed the story quite a bit. I would also like to mention that Stephanie Witter writing is very good her writing was easy to read, and her words at times made me feel real emotions for the characters in this story. This is a story of love, loss, heartache and life feeling out of control.
Lily Saunders life is falling apart, her best friend Andy is acting weird, his older brother Gabe is home who Lily doesn’t get along with and her family life has fallen apart. When Lily needs her best friend for support he isn’t there for her. Gabe steps up and tries to help Lily anyway he can. Gabe has been away at school and Lily can see clearly that he is different, quiet and seems more mature. In the past Gabe and Lily have always argued and for some reason they just don’t get along. But Gabe listens and Lily finds she can tell him anything; they share with each other their sorrows and a real relationship is formed between them. It funny to see how similar they are and how much they paid attention to each other growing up, even if it was yelling at each other.
Lily’s mother, father and best friend have deserted Lily and she has no one but Gabe. This story is heartbreaking at times and I loved Lily’s character, strength and I felt so bad for her being so alone at a young age. But Gabe does step up most of the times and it fantastic reading. I have rated By My Side a 4.5 star rating and I really suggest anyone who reads this and enjoys YA Romance to pick this book up you will not be disappointed.
Another book by Stephanie Witter that has my stomach and throat in complete knots! And another book that deserves a lot more than 5 stars! Another damn book i cried a little at!
This book was like an emotional rollercoaster, it made me feel I was there with them, sharing their pain. Who thought 2 people as stubborn as Gabe and Lily, would find solace in each other after years of fighting with each other!?
Thrown in the mix was Andy, the jealous best friend. He needed a little slap just to sort him the hell out!
I was so hooked on this book that I couldn't even hold a conversation with my partner without snapping at him! Very emotional, and AMAZING story line and another awesome book that tore my me to pieces.
This was my first ever read outside my genre, and it was beyond superb.
Lily's family is falling apart, her father is leaving and her mother turns to alcohol to drown her sorrows. Lily is left all alone and has only her best friend Andy to run to.
But when Lily arrive at Andy's home what she found was not what excepted. Andy's behaviour towards her throws Lily into an ever darker pit. Her best friend is pushing her away. When left all alone and nowhere to go the person there for her was her childhood enemy Andy's Brother Gabe. Gabe has been the heartbreaker of the town, then left for college, returning to find salvation for his own heartache. Now Lily finds that all she knew about Gabe was wrong and that the person now standing by her side is the person she least exspected it to be.
Between the brothers a feud sparks because both wants to be with Lily, who will win her heart? But when Lily's world comes crashing down around her, there is only one.
This book was filled with so many emotions it was an addictive read from start to finish. Your heart bleeds for Lily and Gabe and you find yourself grabbing for some air just to survive the next Chapter. It's intense and filled with real life issues that all day young adults have to deal with. A absolute must read. Author Stephanie Witter writes with passion that grabs your heart, I am looking forward to more novels from her.
This book is about Lily and her dealing with her father leaving and her mothers reaction to it.Her best friend is Andy and he suddenly starts acting super jealous when his brother Gabe comes home.Gabe and Lily have never gotten along but things are going to change this year.
This book was emotionally well written .It felt sometimes like there was quite a bit going on.From Lily's mom becoming an alcohlic to her dad leaving to Gabe and Lily's new relationship. There is ALOT going on.I think sometimes it isnt clear how much time had passed in the book and that was a tiny bit confusing.I did not understand why Gabe and Lily had so much drama all the time either.I mean here this girl is going through something horrible(I wont mention what due to it being a spoiler) and then the 2 of them break up not once but about 3 times.I just wanted to yell at them to stop acting so immature. The writing was great and its definitely a book to read.I really enjoyed the ending and would love to see a second book or a novella continuing Lily and Gabe's life in college. All in All a great read and one you will want to pick up the next time your looking for something to hunker down on your couch and read .Job Well Done Stephanie Witter.
I was gifted a copy of By My Side in exchange for an honest review.
Lily Saunders was looking forward to hanging out with her best friend Andy Green during the summer after their junior year. The return of Andy’s older brother Gabe from college promises to add drama to their summer because they despise him. When Andy and Lily start fighting, drama certainly arrives, but it comes in a different package than even Lily expected. Gabe tries to comfort Lily during her fight with his younger brother and wants her to give Andy a chance to amend their friendship. Instead, Lily finds herself facing romantic feelings she never thought she would have for either of the Green brothers. Lily’s sarcasm and budding feelings provide an escape from the harsh reality of her parent’s divorce. There were a few times throughout the book that the wording was a little confusing and minor details were not consistent throughout, but these did not take away from the plot. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Witter.
I read By My Side by Stephanie Witter. I recommend this book! I love the story and the sarcasm of Lily. This is her story of the summer after the Junior year of high school. Her best friend Andy has been her friend ever since kindergarten and he is her optimism where she is his pessimism. They hate Andy's older brother Gabe, who is in college, with a passion... but he shows up back at home during their summer and won't leave. The summer looks like it's going to be all downhill for Lily and Andy until they start fighting. Gabe steps in to "comfort" Lily, but that's where the drama starts. There is a couple parts where it is sad because of things that happen in their lives, but it adds to the story. A few times in the book things were worded a little differently, but I understood it and it did not hurt the story in any way. This author is a great writer. This is her debut novel and I want to read more of her books!
By My Side is a story of the bittersweet love between two people whose life is irrevocably changed.
The Main Character, Lily has a personality that I admire. She's strong, fun, albeit sarcastic but she uses her sarcastic side to protect herself.
Its a great read because Stephanie fully explored the character and the chemistry between Lily and Gabe.
Both has been giving sarcastic remarks for years and hated each other but the way Stephanie brings those two different yet same people made this book a fantastic read.
By My Side is a mixture of jealousy, death and abandonment and how both these characters went through the changes in their lives.
I absolutely loved this story of love, loss, heartache and so much more. Lily Saunders has a lot to deal with. Her father leaves, her mother starts drinking and becomes bitter, and she can't even turn to her best friend. What does that leave a teenage girl with? Luckily she can still find love ... or can she? Once you become sarcastic and jaded, can love still work for you?
This was a great read! Pick it up and you won't want to put it down. A must have, from teenager to adult will love it.
I loved everything to do with this story, from start to finish and found myself quickly devouring every chapter. Lily’s pain was clearly evident with the descriptive nature used, and I couldn’t help but be drawn into her life. It’s an emotional roller coaster, but love always is, and I thoroughly enjoyed being taken along for the ride.
I received an e-copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this novel, I want to write a better review or make more comments but honestly I really need sleep, I stayed up all night reading this amazing novel and I ended up falling asleep because I just couldn't keep my eyes open anymore. It's marvelous, good job Stephanie!
Did I read a different book than the other reviewers? I thought this book was pretty bad. I'm sorry, I hate to say that, but it's the truth for me. The writing was really bad. There were times where I had to read and reread a sentence because it just didn't make any sense. There were missing words, incorrect versions of words. The dialogue was very unnatural, and the overall flow of the story was choppy. I didn't understand the relationship between Adam and Lily at all. He's supposed to be her best friend who becomes jealous and leaves her feeling alone, so she turns to her arch-nemesis Gabe. Well, all of that ended up sounding very juvenile to me when it played out in the book. To be fair, the author is a native French speaker, so that may be the reason why the book reads the way it does. That didn't help me enjoy it more though. This would truthfully be a one star book for me if it weren't for the storyline dealing with Lily's relationship with her mother, and how all that plays out. I thought it was pretty original. I just wish the whole book had a makeover.
Meh. I've read better "I hate you but now I love you" books. For me this book was just meh. Wasn't amazing and wasn't horrible. However, the ending was just o.O This is basically how the book ends:
Girl- "We shouldn't be together anymore! What's the point when we'll be separated soon?"
Guy- "What?! No but I-i love you!"
Girl- *Gasp!* "Ehhh sorry still no because I'm on self preservation mode. You can't go behind my back if there's no relationship sucka!" (More or less her thought process :P)
Thennn they're sad\angry (basically angsty) for like a year then they see each other again, make out, and BOOM! instant happiness. Yeahhh the ending was abrupt and ehhh. They just didn't seem so in love. It seemed like an infatuation. No compromise or apologies, just my way or the highway. :|
By My Side by Stephanie Witter is a YA contemporary romance that focuses on a teen girl who is going through a lot in her life. Lily's father has left her and her mother, her mother is drinking nonstop, and Lily has the weight of the world on her. She thought that she could count on her best friend, Andy, to help her deal with everything but instead it's Andy's brother Gabe who Lily comes to rely on. The story has a lot of tough concepts in it, including drug and alcohol use, overdose, and divorce. It also has a teen romance that is very realistic in its ups and downs. I think that this book would be very relatable to teenagers. Overall, I liked the story and I would recommend it to fans of YA contemporary romance.
First off, let me state that I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
By My Side by Stephanie Witter is a wonderful book. It follows Lily and her relationship with brothers Andy and Gabe. Lily has a troubled life, and she has always been able to rely on her best friend, Andy, being there for her. Lily embarks in a relationship with Gabe, Andy's brother, and Andy shuns Lily because of that relationship. This story really brings the dilemma of teen love into light, and brings it all together in a believable plot. I definitely recommend this book to any reader!
I'm sarcastic. I'm a loner. I'm a snob. He's my best friend. We're not friends anymore. We're friends again. I hate his brother. I love his brother. We broke up. We're back together. We broke up. We're back together... My parents are fighting. Next day - my parents are divorced. I love my coffee. I cannot function without my coffee.
This book is not good but I forced myself to finish it thinking it would redeem itself. I've read other books from this author and have gotten used to her awkward use of the English language (English is not her first language). This book has language flow issues AND the storyline is too simplistic.

"I ran up the door, opened the stairs, said my pajamas and put on my prayers - turned off my bed, tumbled into my light, and all because she kissed me good-night!" The book deserve all it credit if the author could have the story so well, Maybe the second series are on the way coming back to the shelves
