Seven years ago, Captain John Watson of the Canadian Forces Medical Service withdrew from society, seeking a simple, isolated life in the distant northern wilderness of Canada. Though he survives from one day to the next, he doesn't truly live until someone from his dark past calls in a favor and turns his world upside-down with the introduction of Sherlock Holmes.

"The essentials of their relationship distilled through solitude."

Canadian John, works better than you might first imagine. Rehab terrorizing Sherlock, everything you've come to expect. Pretty good AU with some changes for the location, and I'll be honest, I had doubts about rural --hinterlands rural-- Johnlock story. More guns and ammo than usual and field dressings-- and while John does it, it's not the medical kind. Main focus is John's PTSD and Sherlock decoding it.

I never once thought I'd read an AU that largely takes place in Canada - and for that matter, a place that is set quite close to where I live. I think my city is even mentioned a few times. Not only did I not expect to read this kind of AU, I truly didn't expect to enjoy it because frankly, I'm all about the city. I don't camp, I would never hunt, and I hate the snow and I wouldn't be able to stand solitary life in the backwoods of the prairies. But somehow it just worked. The characters were near perfect, the descriptions were clear enough that you understood everything despite lack of knowledge pertaining to such a simple lifestyle. There were a few lines that had me chuckling simply because I could relate due to my location - I even shared the sentences with my mom, who, well...she was a bit confused; I don't think she grasps the concept of fan-fiction. ;) Anyway. I really didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did and to be perfectly honest it is easily one of my favourite stories around.

And I think I might re-read it again with winter on its way.
