Zakharov Bratva #1

Diamond Devil

Rate this book
It’s my first time meeting my sister’s fiancé.
I knock on the door, and who do I see with his arm around her?
The man who got me pregnant.

Three months ago, I almost got hit by a car.
The guy behind the wheel was gorgeous as they come.

We got to talking and… well, things got a little carried away, if you know what I mean.
But when it was over, we went our separate ways.

Except, not quite.
The little plus sign on this pregnancy test that tells me our story isn’t over.

But that’s a problem for another day.
First, I have to go to my sister’s engagement party.

When I see who she’s marrying, my jaw hits the floor.
This… This cannot possibly be real.

But it is real.
So is the attraction I felt when I first met Ilarion Zakharov.
So is the hatred.

And so are the bullets that start flying when Ilarion’s enemies attack the party.

Turns out Mr. Not So Nice Guy is a big, bad Bratva don.
And now that he knows I’m pregnant with his heir…
He’s not letting me out of his sight.

DIAMOND DEVIL is Book 1 of the Zakharov Bratva duet. The story continues in Book 2, DIAMOND ANGEL.

NOTE: This is a light mafia contemporary romance. No cheating.

WARNING: There will be whining and ranting and probably a few curse words in this review. Reader's discretion is advised.

Some key points:
- H/MMC/hero: Ilarion, 28 years old, Pakhan of the Zakharov Bratva, and considered to have as much of a moral compass as his position permits. Also, very loyal and committed to both his family and his Bratva, so is held in high respect by many.
-h/FMC/heroine: Taylor, 20 years old, I THINK she may be a college student, but not much of her personal life outside of her current situation is discussed. Whiny and illogical 99% of the time, but has blonde hair, a tiny waist, a dimple, and an attitude so men "swoon", or so we've been told.

One night, after an argument with her dad turns physical, Taylor goes for a long run to clear her head. It's on her return run home that she's almost run over by a sexy stranger. They talk, sparks fly, and they jump in his backseat to get a little better "acquainted" with one another. For whatever reason, Taylor doesn't want to exchange names, so they part ways and she returns home to let her family know that she will be moving out.
Weeks later, she discovers her sister has been dating this new guy, it's gotten serious super fast, and all of a sudden Taylor is going to be a momma and her sister, Celine, is going to be a wife. And what's even more shocking to Taylor is that she finds out at her sister's engagement party that the future co-parent and husband are one and the same. Ilarion.
At the engagement party, a rival family of Ilarion's Bratva attacks and, while Ilarion is too busy trying to protect Taylor and his unborn child that he's just been made aware of, both Celine and their father are taken by the rival family.

Ok, so that's the setup that really gets the story going. As I'm sure you can surmise, it actually takes a good minute to get to this part, which generally would be a strange approach by an author, but honestly, it works. The author's writing style is engaging, and the content was really interesting. I can't say that I've ever read a mafia romance that has taken this angle either, so that made it really fresh and interesting too. Yeah our heroine got a little silly every once in a while, but she's pregnant and hormones were mentioned several times, so it was easy to brush it off and not let it settle under my skin. So I'm speeding along through this book, absolutely enthralled by every word I'm taking in and found myself already debating whether this would be a 4 or a 5 star read. Then something strange happened. A little past the 70% mark, I found myself getting really irritated. I tried to tell myself that the sudden amp up in the heroine's most annoying qualities was because the story needed a little bit of conflict to resolve and bond the two MC's closer together. Only I was wrong. What happened was the heroine dug her feet hard into being irrational and obstinate, just for the sake of being combative with the hero, and this continued on a REPEATED LOOP (even of the same, stupid argument that made zero sense whatsoever) until the end of the book.

**************SPOILERS*****************

Ok, so by the end(ish) of the book we understand that Ilarion and Taylor have genuinely fallen in love with each other. He wants to be with her, but despite everything, including the fact that she wants to be with him too, she keeps saying that he HAS to be with Celine since she has finally woken up from a coma she was in. Like she's literally acting like he doesn't have a choice and how he feels has no bearing. On top of that, she wants him to act like their child isn't his even though he's made it clear that he wants to be present and a part of his child's life and that there's no way he could do what she's proposing. With all this hanging in the balance and tensions being high, Ilarion has to leave to eliminate the threat of the rival family that has been threatening everything and everyone that he loves. Taylor's dad takes this opportunity to orchestrate an "escape" from the mansion, she finds out that he has secretly been a part of the Zakharov Bratva for 17 years, and had recently betrayed them by helping the rival family. Somehow this is supposed to explain Ilarion's desperate need to marry one of his daughters, but honestly the logic provided behind this just didn't quite hit the mark for me. Celine decides to stay and Taylor, like a true dumbass, decides to leave with her father so Celine "can be happy" and be with Ilarion even though he's made it clear that he doesn't want to be with Celine at all. It ends with Ilarion making the decision that he has to find Taylor, rather than just letting her go. By the time I make it to this minor cliffhanger, I'm truly annoyed and upset and cannot for the life of me understand how something that was going so right, all of a sudden go so wrong. I pull up the second book in my Kindle to read the blurb and try to grasp some type of hope that maybe, just maybe, this story can be saved somehow and do you know what the first line is?! "Five years ago, I ran from the devil who got me pregnant." FIVE YEARS AGO. This bitch took Ilarion's child away from him that he desperately wanted to be a father to and has caused him to miss FIVE YEARS of his son's life. That's all I needed to read to know that I, in no way, want to read the second book and continue this story. There's no way I'd be satisfied because at this point I want Ilarion to get their son and maybe lock her away from him for five years and see how she feels about that. I certainly don't want a happily ever after for her. Ilarion deserves better and, with the standards Taylor has set, it wouldn't be the least bit difficult to find better.

This book certainly made an impression. I've never seen a book with as much potential as this one had to be great, crash and burn as quickly as this did. I'm still reeling from it. This literally was a 4/5 star read for me and I had no choice but to watch it fall completely apart in just the last 25-30% of it. It felt like complete and utter betrayal. And not in the way that an author can break your heart and crumble you to pieces so they can build you back up the right way in the next installment. No, that would have been ok. I would have been perfectly happy to be a broken, emotional wreck when this story ended if it made sense with the storyline. But this felt like intentional sabotage so the author could have more material to elaborate on for a second book, just for the sake of having a second book, quality of the story be damned. Anyway, I'm done. I've got to start another book now so I can wash this one out of my system before it stains my book-loving soul dark with disappointment. (Yeah, I'm still super salty just in case that wasn't clear.)

Genre wise this is a Bratva romance Taylor after a random encounter with a dynamic stranger finds herself knocked up and then pulled into the dangerous world of the Russian Bratva when she discovers the stranger she shared a steamy one-time session with is in fact now her sister's new fiancé.

When all hell breaks loose at her sister Cecile’s engagement party Taylor finds herself reluctantly taken into Ilarion’s protection. Cecile is taken prisoner by her fiancé's enemies and Ilarion well he’s still adamant and intent on matrimony and not to Taylor the mother of his child-to-be.

Taylor and her sister are night and day Ilarion had no idea that his new bride-to-be is related to the nameless tigress that caught his eye. Celine is malleable whilst Taylor is all fire and defiance if he’d known he’d proposed to the wrong sister things wouldn’t be in such a mess now. Now he’s just determined to see his plans through to fruition despite an unexpected pregnancy complicating things. But no matter the logic the heart wants what it wants and neither of these two can manage to stay away from the other.

So this was well written and enjoyable i actually felt sorry that Taylor constantly puts herself last like her own happiness isn’t important. I wasn’t convinced that her sister was as sweet and innocent as she made out as she did appear a tad manipulative at times and ultimately a pale imitation of her sister. Rather I felt Celine was jealous of Taylor even if only subconsciously and I believe she was way more aware of what was occurring than she made out to people her sweet as pie act was not as authentic as it appeared.

This ended on a pivotal plot point and I’m excited to discover what happens next and just what Celine will do when the truth becomes apparent and even if my instincts when it comes to her are on point or whether I’m barking entirely up the wrong tree and just being highly cynical. Either way, I can’t wait to find out. This wasn’t perfect for me by any means it was a bit more angsty than I usually like but I did mostly enjoy myself.

I enjoyed this immensely. However, not only do I think this should’ve been a lot shorter if there was going to be a second book to it, but I feel like it all could’ve been in one book. But like also I kind of glanced at the next one and I kind of get why there are two books. I’m also a person though that if it isn’t fantasy I feel like it shouldn’t be more than 400 pages period. That’s just me. I will make exceptions for certain books if they pull me into it. This one was not that exception sadly.

She’s such a martyr and she doesn’t even need to be and that ticks me off. Also plot twist at the end. I saw it coming, but I also didn’t so that was interesting. Will I read the second installment? Yes. Cross your fingers that I like this one a lot more.

cheating. lying author.

I hate it when authors lie. No cheating my AR$e. I can’t stand liars and at the start of the book and in the warning statement it says no cheat, but it is cheating.
I don’t care if he’s the king or the sweet boy next door, this man is a cheater. He is cheating for almost all the book, especially if after you find out you Taylor’s pregnant but still plan on marrying the other the sister that isn’t pregnant and let that sister touch you saying she loves you.

I went into this book hoping for angst, yearning and some drama but all i can say is that it did not deliver and also could not hold my attention. I wanted it to finish asap. The MMC is so conflicting, and i read a summary for both the books and apparently he had the sister along for the ride even in the second book.
The MFC is okay, she had some backbone but why are you killing everything in your life because you want your sister to be happy and in love? Her selflessness made me want to slap her a few times.
I thought i’ll try again this morning, but i just can’t get myself to open the book again.

Such a promising book, too bad indecision ruined it

Honestly, this book was entirely too long to end on a cliffhanger.
I love angsty reads and I adore love triangles, however, the constant “we want to but I shouldn’t/can’t/won’t/….but maybe…nope. Not gonna. Well, perhaps… ugh! It was so repetitive and annoying. Sh!t or get off the pot!

unnecessarily to long!

Man this book had so much potential but it didn’t need to be so long filled with inner jabber. Taylor could have been bad ass if it wasn’t for her self hate which turned into a broken record. I got to 80% of the book still confused af as to why they took her dad and what role he plays in the whole story! I already knew when she says he’s a travel agent that he’s involved in the mob. But cmon there must been some sign as well as there’s a book two which means after reading this long inner jabber story there’s most likely a cliff hanger. Pakhan was amazing no complaints. Ugh I really wanted to love this book. Gah!

Thank God for good friends who recommend amazing reads! Naomi West is a new author to me so I had no clue what to expect going in. It didn't take long to fall into this story and get lost in the angst, tension, and intrigue! I'm so glad I took a chance on this one! Now on to book 2!

I’m not sure why this is advertised as “no cheating” since his fiancée (it’s an arrangement but so what?) is in a coma and he takes her sister to a cabin to have sex multiple times ? That is not “no cheating”.

Onward to BOOK 2

It’s hard to give a review on just a portion of a book 📕 so at the end of book 2 I will leave my final opinion.

But I will say this -/ I’m not sure why many of these Reviews say Taylor is whiny .
I think she has legit emotions & her feelings throughout the first book are by a woman being loyal to her family even if they ask to much. When she comes to the conclusion that her sister truly did ask to much over the Alex issue. And let her suffer guilt she shouldn’t have .
It’s to late to claim her man this time . Because he’s already claimed her sister in front of everyone by asking her ( Celine ) to marry him !
And only the enemies know the true reason !
So I can understand her logic and motives for not wanting to be seen as the woman who broke up an engagement. ( and hurt her because Cee has feelings for him too )

This book said no CHEATING THOUGH !!!

It never says if he had sex with the sister after Taylor & He had their night , before he realized who she was at the engagement party ! That alone would be something hard to accept.
( him having sex with both of them ) .

Now I’m not happy that he loses 5 years of seeing his child !! Because she ran !
That’s so heartbreaking 💔 it’s a joy that shouldn’t be taken away from a man .

Yet he kinda did it to himself by not knowing there were two sisters & what they looked like before making his plan of action. ( or he would have recognized her ) when they had their encounter!
In most mafia books the VOR is closely associated & family members are known to the boss. So he should have known or his men would have known he had two daughters:

So that part is truly upsetting.
Because it causes the whole mess !
Anyway off to see where book 2 leads them .

I saw one review and it said it’s hard to image in most mafia’s that it would take 5 years to find her !

I’m only hoping in book 2 that it doesn’t have Him & the sister married since Taylor ran off . Surely he wouldn’t do that . There’s no need anymore !!

So as you can see it’s not really a review more of a thinking out loud opinion.

The writing is good ! The story line is very emotional. The battles are intense.

With the enemy escaping each time !
Which is nerve racking. Lol 😂

This is a well written book with a cast of strong characters centering on Taylor and Ilarion. The author does a fantastic job developing the story and bringing it to life with her detailed and descriptive writing. She pulled me in with all the action, intrigue and steam. She brings drama, anxiety, surprises, violence and twists throughout. It's a terrific mafia romantic suspense that captured and held me from start to finish and left me with wanting more with the cliffhanger ending. I can't wait for the next book!!

It was too predictable, repetitive and unrealistic. It was easy to read and that’s what made it easy to finish the whole book. I was also hoping that the book would turn around at some point, since the ratings were mainly good. But don’t let me stop you from reading it, one’s cup tea is something else’s coffee.

wish I could have love it

This book had so much potential. I ended up hating Taylor-so much self hate which I get but eventually she should have gotten over it after awhile it got to be ridiculous. I got through 70% of the book and had to skip through because I couldn’t stand her character anymore. Pakhan was amazing no complaints. I really wanted to love this book but it made me not want to even read the second one

Boring 😴

Too much time talking about everything thing else but them. It's like they not the central characters in the story. Not worth 2 books and I don't have enough interest in the writing to see what happens in this drawn out mess.

4.5⭐️ This really surprised me! I enjoyed it a lot even though it was a lot more angsty than I usually read. I liked the characters and had a lot of empathy for them. By the end of the book though I began to get frustrated with Taylor and her lack of decision-making.

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️/5
Chemistry: 🧪🧪🧪🧪🧪
Plot: 5/5

Diamond Devil has got to be the most woven storyline that continually blows my mind the more I read it. It was nothing short of captivating and emotional at every turn. So many feelings are discovered throughout this book along with self discovery. Shame, family drama, and realization are just a few of the things these characters go through. And you go right along with them at every single turn.

Chemistry is such a huge factor throughout this book, that it's hard not to see where it does and doesn't lie. But it all comes down to what are you willing to do to be happy? Two wrecked souls are fighting for what should be theirs, but so many obstacles in the way it's almost impossible.

The spice throughout this book was TOP NOTCH!! Let's just say that this spice is what you dream of having with someone. But attainable, in so many ways. Passion, emotions and so much more is packed within each scene and you can just feel the tension throughout in every single scene.

Absolutely loved this book, and can't wait for the next!!
