A professor of modern British political history, Ben Pimlott was professor of contemporary history at Birkbeck College, London, from 1987 to 1998, and warden of Goldsmith's College from 1998 until his death in 2004.
When it comes to writers on the Labor Party and UK politics from the 70s to 90s, none were better at it than Pimlott. He shines in the collection when talking about Thatcher, the left more broadly, and the historical roots of socialism. His profiles of 0f political leaders are a real treat, as is his essay on "1984." The collection loses its way in some essays -- for example, in some truly odd, long pieces written about Portugal in the 70s (clearly the author is proud of them, but their inclusion here was a mistake).
