Dark Heat: The Dark Kings Stories contains novellas written by Donna Grant all preceding the Dark Kings series.

Grant writes steamy, passionate characters with action-intense plots. I enjoyed her stories, but found that the development of the storylines was rushed. I do realize this is meant more for a teaser of what is to come in the series, whetting your imagination for what might happen next...and you know me, I'm always up for more dragon-shifting alpha males with awesome powers and prowess. Kilts, I'm sure they can wear kilts too.

I found Dark Heat: The Dark Kings Stories is an enjoyable introduction to Donna Grant's work, and I look forward to more Dragon Kings falling for their mates.

I received this copy of Dark Heat from St. Martin's Paperbacks in exchange for an honest review. This book was published on December 31. 2013.

Includes a bonus Dark Kings story: Passion's Claim!

Dark Heat gathers together these favorite stories of Donna Grant's Dark Kings.

Dark Craving

Fueled by ancient magic—and enflamed by human desire—the Dragon King known as Hal can transform himself at will into one of the legendary winged creatures he is sworn to protect. But one thing he can never do is fall in love...with a mortal woman.

Hal has always been loyal to his dragons and accepts that Constantine is the strongest of all the kings, making him the king of kings, literally. When Con decreed that they would no longer look for their mates in human women, Hal understood. But when Sexy Cassie shows up to stay at her brother's cabin near the Dreagan holdings, Hal is hard pressed to keep away.

Cassie's life has been on a downward swing so when her brother offers her a chance to start over but in his typical clueless fashion he leaves her on her own. Caddie has to get from the airport to the cabin on her own. Pick up his dog and navigate the Scottish country roads, in the dark, in a snowstorm...delayed further by a flat tire she finally arrives to find the key where it's supposed to be but no password for the lock. Mentally and physically exhausted Caddie collapses only to wake up to a gorgeous man.

Hal has no clue how he to deal with Cassie. He is instantly attracted but the more he gets to know her, the more he wants to know. Instant attraction slides quickly into love and Hal isn't sure how he can keep her, mortal woman that she is.

For Cassie it's the same but she US confused by Hal's hot and cold attitude. She knows Hal is hiding something but just what he is hiding blows her away. Now the question is, can Cassie love the man AND the Dragon?

Night’s Awakening

The dark immortal warriors were never meant to experience human desire. But when Guy, a member of an ancient order of shape-shifting warriors, meets Elena—a mere mortal whose beauty and blind ambition shakes him to his core—all bets are off...

Elena has worked hard to get where she is in the world. Her job in London is everything she could hope for. But when her boss insists she goes caving with her, Elena is concerned to put it mildly. Totally out of her depth, Elena then discovers that they are caving on very private land. Elena wants to go back but Sloan, her boss insists on pushing forward and taking unnecessary risks. When Sloan falls to her depth Elena has no idea how to get out. Injuring herself in the attempt. So when three gorgeous males show up and offer her help Elena is more than cooperative, even if they are acting awfully suspicious and asking some accusing questions.

It's been five months since the silver's moved and the magic seemed to falter. While all of the Dragon Kings have accepted Caddie, they are sure whatever caused the glitch is over. That is until Guy sets eyes on Elena. And the more he gets to know her the more he wants her.

If only it were that simple. Just what was Elena and her boss doing deep into Strahan land? And who really sent them? Is Elena as innocent as she seems? And if she is, if she returns Guy's feelings, the question remains, can she accept his Dragon?

Dawn’s Desire

For centuries, the Dragon Kings have hidden their shapeshifting powers from the world. But when a mortal enemy threatens to expose them, the warrior Banan must leave his secret lair in the Highlands to risk his life for the dragons within—and resist the temptations of human love.

Elena is back in London helping the Kings solve the mystery of who at PureGems was behind Sloan and Elena's venture on to Strahan lands and just what they know. Guy is forced to stay in the background but Rhys and Banan are front and center.

Jane enjoys her job at PureGems but totally loathed her boss. He treats her like something to be scraped off the bottom of his shoe. It doesn't help that she has low self esteem considering herself a "Plain Jane" and is forever tripping and dropping things. But no matter her lack of grace and plain looks, Jane is a dedicated employee. When Jane meets Banan, the new company chauffeur she is delighted by their mutual attraction. That is until she discovers she is just a means to an end.

Banan is in London fir one reason and one reason only, he is going to figure out who at PureGems is behind things. When he sets eyes on Jane he discovers that maybe getting to know humans might not be a bad thing. The more he gets to know Jane the more her beauty shines through. And when he confides in her as to what he needs, Jane amazes him by offering to help. Of course this only intrigues Banan more. Except with Cassie and Elena all his experiences with human women have led to betrayal.

But Jane and Banan have other things to worry about, the unknown enemy is stepping up his game. When Jane's life is in danger all bets are off.

Acceptance is no longer the issue and both Jane and Banan discover what real love is.

Passion’s Claim
Banan has been waiting for centuries for someone like Jane. Guy knew it was love at first sight with Elena. Can two Dragon Kings commit to two immortal women for eternity? Or does fate have something else in store?

Sometimes there is more to the story than what we read in the book. Ms. Grant takes a moment to share a bit about what happens next. The best thing about this story is it proves that men can be idiots no matter the species.

Guy lives Elena so much he offers to let her go...Ok, he pretty much pushes her out the door without giving Elena a clue as to what he is thinking. Is Elena strong enough to fight fir their live? Then smack him upside his head...

Banan at least is smart enough to get the girl to commit as soon as possible. All Jane has to do is say yes.

This story was a pause in the war..or whatever it can be called. Just sharing a vignette in their lives.

I really enjoyed re reading the novellas. Each story wad fun and sweet and combined a great lead up to the full length novels.

A couple of things to consider..

Pure Gems is mentioned in each book so I think it's going to play an even bigger part in the story.
Cassie's brother? What's the deal? Could he be more than we think?
Just who is running things and what do they know, more importantly what do they have against the Dragon's?
Is Ulrik going to be able to 're connect with the silvers?
Lots of questions making me eager to read the next book!

I sincerely suggest you read this boom to get ready for those Dragon Kings.

Dark Heat was an excellent introduction to the Dark Kings series and I would highly recommend it for those new to the series.

Overall average rating — 4 Stars

Dark Craving — 3.5 Stars

Cassie Hunter needs a change in her life, so she heads to her brother's remote cabin in the Scottish Highlands where she meets Hal Wilson and the two are instantly drawn to one another. But what Cassie doesn't know is that Hal is a Dragon King, an immortal who can shift into one of the very creatures he's sworn to protect. I really enjoyed Cassie and Hal's romance which is very much based around the fated mates trope. Both of them are drawn to one another in a way they never have been before and their chemistry is simply amazing. The few steamy scenes we get are well done and I enjoyed them. The information about the Dragon Kings and dragons was fascinating and I definitely can't wait to learn more. Overall this was a very enjoyable story and I really liked Cassie and Hal's romance.

Night’s Awakening — 4 Stars

Elena Griffin had no desire to go cave diving, but there was no way to say no to her new boss. After an accident in the caves Elena is rescued by Guy, an immortal dragon shifter, and their attraction quickly grows. I really enjoyed this story and I loved the instant connection between Elena and Guy. The chemistry between them is fantastic and the steamy scenes are very well done. There's a shower scene in particular that was simply fantastic. In this story we learn that some unknown entity is trying to find out more information about the residents of Dreagan with the Kings believing Elena is somehow connected. I liked how that situation was handled and I'm looking forward to seeing more of that plot point going forward. The end of this story doesn't get completely wrapped up like the first one did, so I'm happy I have the next story to pick up immediately.

Dawn’s Desire — 4.5 Stars

Jane Holden is just trying to make it through her difficult work day when she meets Banan, an immortal dragon shifter. Soon Jane is pulled into a plot to uncover the Dragon Kings' existence which becomes more dangerous by the second. I absolutely loved Banan and Jane's romance from the start. The two have phenomenal chemistry and the sexual tension between them is off the charts. The steamy scenes are very well done and I loved the connection between the pair. This story picks up immediately after the end of the previous one and follows a group of the Dragon Kings going to London to uncover a plot to expose their secret. There was a bit of action and suspense in this story which I really enjoyed and I am very curious about the mystery figure that's behind everything. I definitely can't wait to find out more about him and what any future repercussions will be for the Dragon Kings.

Passion’s Claim — 4 Stars

Banan and Guy have been waiting millennia for their mates but now that they've found them, will they be able to keep them? This story is the shortest of the four and is told in two parts, the first following Banan and Jane and the second following Guy and Elena. Both stories deal with the couples after they've returned to live at Dreagan. The chemistry between the couples continues to be fantastic and the steamy scenes are very well done. Communication issues abound in both relationships, moreso in Guy and Elena's. There was a bit too much angst in Guy and Elena's story than I would have liked, but overall I was happy with the way everything was resolved. Banan and Jane's relationship continues to be fantastic and they're definitely my favorite of the couples in this collection. Overall this was a great story and I liked getting more closure with the two relationships than their individual stories gave.

This was a fantastic audible 🎧. The Story and characters were brought to life through the awesome narration.

I loved each story and how each blended into the next. So far only three of the ancient Dragon kings have found their mates, but I foresee the numbers growing. There is also an enemy who threatens their existence, so as more mates are found the more important it is to protect their privacy and way of life.

This was a HAWT 🔥🔥 story at times. Most especially when those sexy dragons spoke in their Scottish brogue. Phew! Scorchin' honey! Just scorchin'!

I've been in such a paranormal mood lately. I decided it was finally time to dive into this series. I read a novella that's later in the series already but wanted the whole thing! So glad because I love the world the Dragon Kings make up and will want to visit it often.

This book is the first three novella that start the series in one place. It actually includes a little more with Passion's Claim at the end. But the stories perfectly set-up this world and introduce us to the main characters. Each story emphasizes a different king and his discovery of the women that changes him forever. I loved them all.

Dark Craving is Hal's story. He is drawn to Cassie when she comes to stay at her brother's cottage. It's not normal for a dragon king to fall in love because that part of them has been blocked with magic. Something is not right here. We don't learn the reason - it becomes part of the overarching series question along with the silvers moving. It leaves some mysteries and interest to keep me reading but it does tie up Hal and Cassie. I enjoyed their story, though it was too short.

Night's Awakening is Guy's story. Elena gets forced into a caving outing that changes her life. Meeting Guy there and trying to understand what's going on has her confused and hurt. But she is one strong women - you have to be to survive a dragon king! This story ties up Guy and Elena but adds to the series questions. Why are the kings being targeted and by whom? And we have the ongoing questions about kings falling in love.

Dawn's Desire is Banan's story. He meets Jane as they try to unravel the questions left from Guy's story. Jane works at the same place as Elena and there has to be answers there. Banan is adorable in his effort to avoid the little issue of falling in love but these dragon kings fall hard so he had no hope. All of the women who captured a dragon kings heart have been strong and capable. They proved themselves before a dragon king of kings.

The bonus story of Passion's claim actually ties up the stories for Guy and Elena, and Banan and Jane. It also does a good job and bridging the novellas and the rest of the series.

I enjoyed the world building for this series. Dragons have always been here. Man is the interloper. But the drama that was caused by the arrival of man continues to have ripples. The characters are all well developed and the story has had me wanting the next book as soon as I finish one.

If you enjoy paranormal and haven't gotten to this series yet, you should. It's well worth the time.

This story originally came out in three novellas and this book is a way to get them all at once. And, the author has added a bonus story... so, that makes this book a bit longer than most but at least you get the whole thing! :)
Each of these novellas is about a Dragon King and the woman they fall in love with. I won't go into detail about each one... the blurb pretty much says it all.
I highly recommend that you read this book before reading the new novellas/book coming out soon called Darkest Flame. I'm currently reading those novellas as they are released and there are gaps and places where I felt like I was missing out on something that had already happened. Which is why I stopped to read this... :)
Because these are all short stories things can seem a bit rushed and there is not as much attention to detail which make these fast and easy reads. I really like all of these characters and it was fun watching these powerful dragon kings succumb to love. Especially when they didn't think it was possible.
So, if you're into hot, steamy, strong and powerful Dragon shifters I highly recommend this series... I enjoyed it...

****Thank you netgalley for an advanced copy****

This book was a lot of things and it was my first time reading this author, though I've heard good things from friends. Safe to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It is a collection of stories about the Dragon Kings that reside on earth and the women they fall in love with. The men are as different as the dragons they turn into, but all are strong, sexy and unwilling to believe that these women are theirs. Falling in love for them is supposed to be impossible and it's funny watching the heroines scramble the minds of very primitive alpha males.
The build up is lovely, in such short stories, sometimes it can feel rushed, but the sexual tension mounts from the first meeting, accompanied by fear and banter and confusion and it leads wonderfully into the inevitable physical intimacy. Which is sexy. There are some smoking sex scenes and depending on which Dragon King you eventually back, you'll find your favourite. I did.
A quick, fun, hot read for those who like dragon shifters and men with swords. I'll definitely be reading this author again.

Loved the novellas when I first bought them and only bought this for the new story that was added on for this edition only. Too bad there isn't a way to please those of us who have previously purchased novellas by letting us get the extras without having to buy the stories all over again, but I can't complain as I enjoyed the new story and look forward to this new series.

I listened to the audio version with Romance Unlimited. It's a collection of short stories about the Dragon Kings. These are 'old school' paranormal stories about dragon shifters. Once the world was ruled by dragons but a war with humans had the dragon kings sending their dragons to a different dimension. They used their magic to spell their fellow dragon king so he couldn't shift and command his dragons. Each dragon king rules a specific color of dragons. Now the kings hang out in a Scottish castle, run a distillery and keep an eye on the spelled ex king. When they get weary of the world they fall into a deep sleep so there are only a few awake at a time.

Three stories were about three of the dragon kings falling in love. Also, two short stories about the couples 'bonding'.

There is sex and romance but it isn't quite a graphic as some paranormal stories. I enjoyed the couples and a break from books that seem to be no more then one endless sex scene.

I'm looking into starting the Dark Kings series and several reviews mentioned reading the prequel novellas first. This novella collection did a great job setting up the mythology and current state of Dreagan Industries.

Some info was a bit repetitive as it was repeated in each novella and of course, the romance happened pretty quickly. But I breezed through the collection and I'm eager to get started with the first, full-length novel.

Paranormal romance at its best! Taken from my review at RomanceJunkies.com:

A compilation of four delectable novellas...

DARK CRAVING

American Cassie Hunter arrives in Scotland expecting to be met by her brother Dan, but not only is he not there, she soon encounters one problem after another, including a flat tire, nearly going over the side of a mountain and being unable to get into Dan’s house.

Seeing his neighbor Dan’s dog running free, Hal takes him home and comes to Cassie’s rescue, but he cannot believe his attraction to her. After all, she is a human and Hal is sure his dragon magic had put an end to such an attraction, especially for kings like himself. But he cannot deny his craving for Cassie and the feeling seems to be mutual. But what will happen when she discovers she has fallen in love with a dragon? Will his secret be safe?

NIGHT’S AWAKENING

Elena Griffin has only recently been promoted to London, so when her new boss, Sloan, asks her to go caving with her, she cannot turn her down. But Elena was not told that she would be visiting caves situated on Dreaghan land. After several hours, all she wants is to go home, but an accident leaves her boss dead and Elena injured deep inside a mountain.

Since one of his fellow dragon kings recently found his soul mate, a human no less, Guy has been feeling out of sorts. Due to their history with humans, the dragons performed a spell that keeps the kings from forming alliances with them…a spell that no longer seems to be working. As Guy and a couple of his fellow dragons come to Elena’s rescue, he cannot deny his attraction to her, one that seems to be mutual. To have a future together, she will have to give up everything she knows and accept them as they are. Will she be able to fit into their world, or will she give up Guy for good?

DAWN’S DESIRE

In an effort to keep the modern day existence of shape-shifting dragons a secret, Banan, the immortal king of the blue dragons, leaves his lair in the highlands to find an enemy who threatens to expose them. When he meets Jane Holden, he believes she may be part of the threat, so he resists the woman, regardless of how badly he desires her.

Although Jane does not believe she is beautiful, being in Banan’s arms makes her feel like she is. When danger strikes, he is the one she turns to and he will do whatever it takes to keep her safe as he realizes she is his destiny. But will the news that he is an immortal dragon shifter scare her off?

PASSION’S CLAIM

Guy, king of the red dragons, has been in love with Elena since he first met her. He had asked her to come with him and to go through a binding, the dragon’s version of a wedding, with him. She had agreed and they have been living together with the other dragon kings at Dreaghan. However, Elena had given up her career to be with him and lately, he has noticed offers for jobs coming in and Elena seems wistful. Believing he is holding her down and wanting to give her happiness, he sets her free without even discussing it with her.

Elena gave up her former life to be with Guy and that is all she wants. She is heartbroken when Guy leaves and all she gets is a call telling her he wants her to be happy. Thinking he does not love her anymore, she must make a decision. Should she leave, or stay and fight for his love?

Combining four delectable stories in one book, bestselling author Donna Grant packs her latest novel, DARK HEAT, with suspense, action, incredible world building, passion, sigh worthy romance and eternal love. As a compilation of books from her DARK KINGS’ series, this is a novel that will keep you entertained from beginning to end. The last story in this book leads into the binding between Banan and Jane, whose tale is told in DAWN’S DESIRE and it also follows up on Guy and Elena, who meet and fall in love in NIGHT’S AWAKENING. Both stories are included in this book.

Be warned; once you enter the world of the DARK KINGS, you may not want to leave. My problem now is waiting for the release of the next installment of this fantastic series, DARK FLAME. Each of the stories seems to flow into the next one, so you do not want to miss even one of these beautifully written tales. Take my advice; run, do not walk, to the nearest bookstore and pick up a copy!

Dark Craving
3.5 stars

A brilliantly written story with an exciting, hot plot and characters. I can tell this is going to be an interesting series but I'm disappointed that it was rushed. I would have liked more time to get to know the characters and to see their relationship progress and build rather than the meet, mate, hea that we have.
I'm looking forward to the next one

Night's Awakening
3.5 stars

Another brilliantly written sexy addition to the series, even if they are too short. It's an exciting world I'm hoping to learn more of and I'm looking forward to reading a full length book rather than these snippets that feel rushed through. We need more time with the characters to learn about there history and see relationships develop rather than being thrown together. I'm looking forward to Cons story, but as I said before, I hope it's longer and more detailed.
I'm excited to see where this goes next.

Dawn 's Desire
3.5 stars

Another brilliantly written hot little read with an exciting plot and some sexy characters I'm looking forward to learning more about.
I'm still disappointed that we aren't given a lot of time to see the characters relationship develop more, they are all very rushed which is a shame as I think they would do ready well as full length novels

Passions Claim
4 stars

Another brilliantly written addition to the series. Although very short it was exciting and sexy and I'm glad we got to see the rest of Guy and Banans stories.
I hope the next one is longer and goes into more detail about their past and the other kings, a few more names have been mentioned but we didn't learn anything apart from that.

I think these were a great sample into the series, if a little short on the individual stories. I haven't read any of the other series so I think I'll have to give those a go aswell.

I was really excited to start reading this book because I have read the first novella that is in this book in the past. I am not usually a fan of dragon paranormal books, but this author has written them in a way that I completely loved!
Once I started this book, I really couldn’t put it down. The different characters in this book were all written extremely well in my opinion. It was amazingly easy to follow along with the stories and who was who throughout the whole book. I really do enjoy the fact that this book has such a wide variety of characters that all play very important roles throughout the whole book.
My only real complaint about the stories would be how predictable they were. I did enjoy them still even with an idea where they were going, but I just hoped that there would be some big surprise that would happen.
Overall, I can’t recommend it enough to people who enjoy paranormal books, especially ones about dragons.

Although I read the first three novella's when they were initially released as individual ebooks I still thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved the bonus story at the end also, it was good to get that wee bit of clarification or maybe even closure for one of the initial pairings. I love that this is a spin-off from the Dark Warriors series which in turn was a spin-off from the Dark Sword series but at the same time it can also be read as a stand alone series. I can't wait to continue getting to know the Dragon Kings better.

Maybe having listen to the audiobook was one of the reasons I didn't like it - the narrator wasn't very good - but something just felt... off. Everything was rushed.
I love paranormal romance and recently read a couple of books from the Stonefire Dragon's series. Compared to those - and they were just an okay read - these are really bad.
Don't like to not finish reading/listening to a book, but I couldn't take it any more.

I just finished the 1st story, Dark Craving. It was good, a fast easy read, no real antagonist, except Dan, just a love story between Cassie & A Dragon King named Hal.
The one character in this story that drove me nuts was big brother Dan. Omg. He wasn't even in the story except for it being his cottage Cassie moved to in the Highlands
But he was a piece of shit. He left her on her own at the airport when Cassie first arrives. He leaves his car keys with a flight agent for Cassie to use, and tells her she has to pick up his Great Dane, Duke. So she's in a strange land, with a car the size of a toy, to put a massive dog in and drive through the mountains, in the dead of winter, to his very secluded cottage. A tire goes flat, she almost freezes to death changing it, then she arrives, barely, at Dan the Dick's place only to find it locked and she has no key or code to get in. So she gets hypothermia, duh.
Fucking Dan was a douche. You find out he left Cassie behind like 9 yrs ago, he's rich, yet has the dinkiest little car for mountain driving. He never checks up on her, there's no food in his place. Like Dan wanted Cassie to die. 100 percent he tried to kill her. ☠️
Dan Dick Face has zero appearance or lines in this book, save for the very end where him and his wife attend Cassie"s wedding, and even there, she avoids him. They do not speak. At. All. Dan def wanted Cassie to succumb to the mountains and fucking bite the dust.
This character didn't have an appearance in this story, and he drove me all the way up the wall throughout this story. I fucking hated Dan.

Nights Awakening:

So, A boss takes her new employee, who has never been in a cave, caving, on private property, so they are also trespassing. 🤔 and they are alone. Talk about a rocky start. Get it?? Hahaha
I hope Sloan dies, she's annoying already. 🙄........welp......spoke too soon #RIPSloan

Dawns Desire:

Jesus, Jane is over the top clumsy, she puts Bella Swan to shame. This huckleberry can't walk barely 2 steps without tripping. She trips. All. The. Time. She trips and falls into things, banging herself up, she must look like a battered woman. She's so clumsy and falls on her face so much that I absolutely do not believe she would still be alive and working a steady job. Her bosses would either think she's a total insurance risk or drunk out of her mind. 😵‍💫 Her constant tripping is taking me out of the story as it's so constant its annoying, like I'm ready for Jane to take a header right off a building and be done with her. She's going to be Banan's mate, he will literally have to piggy back her wherever they go, even around the mansion, they live half in a cave, it's a literal death trap for Jane, she ain't gonna make it y'all.

I will say that I really enjoy how the couples get down and dirty in a quick and efficient manner. The slow burn can often times get too slow, so I like the fact that these characters don't just give each other long, lingering looks for chapter after chapter, or just kiss but always end up stopping a bunch of times and you're halfway through the book and super tired of reading characters that constantly battle with their desires.

Cool series with great world building. Each book features a different couple to focus on, but there are side storylines going on. Don't like that it takes forever for the storylines that are in multiple books take forever to be solved. Like the Ulrick thing. There also tends to be too much rehashing in this series and it can go a little slow, but overall, this series rocks. I've been reading some of the later books in this series and wanted to start at the beginning. This is a fun series that takes place in an interesting world. Love the dragon shifter aspect and the romances are always sweet.

I loved that this book had 3 short stories and a bonus novella all in one! I listened with Audible and enjoyed it. The narrator does a good job; a little formal, but he's crisp, clear, and the quality of the audio is good.

Dark Craving -

Hal is a dragon shifter, who meets human Cassie. There's a connection between them, but the dragons are untrusting of humans after being betrayed before. Hal and Cassie have a sweet connection, and I do enjoy the whole mates type scenario. There's also some steam to the story, which I enjoyed. This is a quick read and a good introduction to this series. Lots of story and action to read about in this series!

Night's Awakening -

Loved how this one started with the cave exploring aspect. Elena and Guy are sweet together and some good passion. I’m always on board for the whole mates thing! Love that connection. This was a fun, short read.

Dawn's Desire -

This book features Jane and Banan. I liked that there was more action in this short story than the previous, but I would've liked for Jane to have more confidence. She kept going on about being a plain Jane, but her looks are definitely not a plain Jane. Maybe her personality is the plain Jane. She's still okay though. I also didn't quite feel the connection between Banan and Her, but they are sweet together. Liked the suspense of finding out who is messing with the dragons and that some past characters were all working together. Fun short story!

Passion's Claim -

This was a sweet novella! Jane and Elena are both worried that their dragons don't want to fulfill their mate bonds. It was good to read more about both couples; I especially liked Elena and Guy's storyline. Wonderful addition to the series.

Overall, I'm excited to see the other dragon shifters find their mates! There's also some story tie ins with some of Grant's other series and this series, so it's really cool to see all the characters interacting.

The last novella in the Dark Heat collection is Passion's Claim. It goes back to the dragon king Guy and the human he saved from certain death inside a Drago mountain. From the moment they met, Guy knew Elena was different. His need to protect her was fierce and his attraction to the beautiful human was undeniable. Soon they gave in to their mutual attraction and their romance started. But now months have passed and Guy is certain that although at first, Elena wanted to be matted to him, she has regretted her decision. That is because he can see the sadness in her eyes every time a new job offer comes to her. Elena is sure Guy doesn't want her anymore. He is gone again. The other kings deny her suspicions and cover for him. She believed they had a future, but since he's changed and avoids her at every turn, she will do what he obviously doesn't have the heart to. She will leave him to be happy with someone else. Communication is everything in a relationship. Guy and Elena aren't talking. They are assuming they know what the other wants and needs. Their emotions are running wild and are leading them astray. Now, it will depend on the other kings to meddle and bring these two lost souls back together. Because without Guy, Elena is nothing, and without Elena, Guy will never survive.

I’m so confused why this is such a prolific series and there are many successful spinoffs. There is very little character development, and the story is clunky. The editing has been mentioned in so many reviews, yet, in my kindle version, years after publication and reviews about terrible editing, there has been no correction to this problem. I thought maybe the reviewers I read were exaggerating about the editing errors, but nope! They are real, and they are bad. Words left out of sentences that are clearly incomplete without the missing words. “S” left off the end of plural words that clearly need the “s”, and pronouns that seem to be switched when his should be hers and vise versa. However, that isn’t all that is missing from this book. I can’t put a finger on it, but although the story has an interesting subject, it doesn’t hold my interest. The sex scenes are spicy, but not keeping me interested because the characters don’t have the depth to hold me. I find it easy enough to set this book aside, and I am not anxious to start reading again.

The vast number of books in this series and the spinoff series are what keeps me going, hoping I will finally feel the grab and want to know what happens next.

1st- I don't quite understand why Cass brother was a no show 2 her after she got off the plane and why would he just practically give his dog 2 her? He's ano show even though she's the only family he has but he only shows up at the marriage. Tristan is a unique renacarnation similar of what he was in his past life. It's good Hal saved her B4 she died from the winter weather. 2nd, - even though they trespassed and her boss died she found Guy 2 save her and was able to find out why she held him at arm's length at 1st cause of her being scared but she would give give up just about everything 4 him when she realized they r like soul mates. 3rd- Guy needs 2 get his head out of his ass and ask questions instead of assuming shit. He had no rt 2 lie 2 her like he knew some when he has no clue. Jane is the most clutsy woman ever but she still has a man who helps/protects her from getting badly hurt. Who the hell is the asshole that was trying 2 hurt the king's by killing innocent people but I think even though she was thrown into their circle sorta speak she was saved by her beast and she proves that she loves him but she has insecurities that he needs 2 fix asap!! The book was really good but I wasn't expecting 3 different stories. I thought it was only 1. Can't wait 4 more asap!!

I’d read the book 1 of the series and then found out about these prequel novellas. So many balls tightening and dresses puddling! A little overkill. Lol

Dark Craving-cute but very uninspired. Pretty annoying that we never find out why Cassie’s brother ditched her, too by the way

Night’s Awakening- this was my favorite of the bunch and the only one that had elements of book one that I’d loved. This one was definitely hot.

Dawn’s Desire-ok, had some good scenes. More action packed than the others which was nice

Passion’s Claim-this is actually two stories that felt kind of unnecessary but maybe just trying to give closure to earlier stories

Overall still kinda on the fence if I want to continue this long series. So much repetition and the formula seems to be just watching the different dragon kings fall for different human women again and again. It’d be nice if some of the main overarching conflicts/themes were finally addressed. Not sure if you have to read the Warriors series concurrently to get the full picture or what. Great world building but characters tend to be kinda shallow and writing style is sometimes eye roll worthy.

Definitely some writing issues in this one but book 1 was better so hopefully some of those early mistakes go away as series progresses.
