Bloodshifted

Rate this book
Ambushed. Blindfolded. Kidnapped by vampires. Edie Spence must race against time to save herself and her baby—from the nightmare that flows through her veins…

As a nurse in the hospital’s secret Y4 ward, Edie has seen her share of daytimers. Once-ordinary humans who’ve tasted vampire blood, daytimers are doomed to serve their nighttime masters. Forever. And now Edie has to face something even more horrifying: she’s become one too…

BLOODSHIFTED

Abducted by the vampire, Raven, Edie is taken to the catacombs beneath the Catacombs, an ironically-named L.A. night club that supplies fresh blood and other favors for its vampire Masters. Edie has no intention of swapping her nurse’s uniform for a cocktail dress—not when her newborn infant needs her. But if she and Asher—her shapeshifter fiancé—can’t figure out a way to bleed Raven’s power, they may never get out of this plasma-soaked pleasure palace…undead or alive.

With Bloodshifted, one of my favourite urban fantasy series comes to an end. Well, you can imagine Edie going on to have many more adventures - the baby's not even born yet - but the publisher decided not to continue with it. If you're looking for more of Cassie Alexander's work, though, she self-publishes erotic fiction.

One of the major drawcards to this series is that Edie Spence is a nurse. I like learning about medical things, so the hospital setting of Y4 is a winner. The location changes, though, with Edie's most recent adventure on a cruise ship.

Now she's living underground with vampires to protect her until the baby is born. The head vampire owns a nightclub, of course, but even this trope isn't boring with Cassie Alexander's storytelling prowess. And it's always cool to read about a "mad science" lab.

The best part of the novel: DIY surgery with a plastic bag and a straw. Impressed the hell out of me!

If you're looking for a thoroughly enjoyable five-book urban fantasy series, begin with Nightshifted, and have a great time.

I've been patiently waiting to be able to read book #5 in the Eddie Spence series. While the spice level dropped in this book, it is still one of my favorites in the series. Eddie Spence never fails to make other people and surviving her priority. This book had a whole new set of characters, and I enjoyed getting to know one that has been on the periphery of all the books so far.

Well, it turns out that I read all five of the books in this trilogy a couple of years ago in the summer of 2014. I'm not sure why I didn't mark them as "read" in Goodreads, but I suspect it might have something to do with the fact that I read them within three months of my Dad's death, and after he died I didn't read anything for about three months. So that's a valid excuse for slipping on the "mark read and review" front. :'(

Anyway. . . I really enjoyed this series. I didn't love it enough to want to buy it and reread it, but I'm glad I rediscovered it and reread it so that I can review it.

This book takes up immediately where the last one left off: Edie is in the car being taken to her new "home." . . . I'm really sort of stumped as to what to say about this story. I liked it, it was good and fun and had some interesting new characters and situations, but all I can think to talk about is how the book (and the series) ended. So I guess I'll just do that. . . .

It's my understanding that the publisher cancelled this series (whyyyyyy?), but I can't tell if Cassie Alexander knew going into this book that it would be her last Edie Spence story, or if it was cancelled after she finished it. This is a good thing, though; a very good thing. The last few books have ended in rather "cliffhanger-y" ways. I sort of feared going into this one that it would end in the same way.

Happily, it did not end in a "cliffhanger-y" way. :-) It wasn't as finalized-an-ending as I could have hoped for, but it did complete the story arc satisfactorily. What happened was this:

Edie

So, Anna

The final lines of the book are as follows:

So was this a good ending to the series? Yes.
Did it leave any unfinished business? Also, yes.

The unfinished business involves these questions. The first one is the main one:

So, those are the questions that I'm left wondering about, but none of them are earth-shattering. I'm satisfied with how this book/series ended. I have the feeling (though again, I'm not 100% sure) that Cassie Alexander knew the series was cancelled and wrote the ending in this way in case she would ever be able to return to it. If she does ever find a new publisher for, or self-publish, more Edie Spence books, I'll look forward to reading them. But in the meantime, I'm happy to call my adventures with Edie "done." :-)

Had this been a regular installment in Cassie Alexander’s EDIE SPENCE series, I probably would have given it 5 stars because the story was well laid out, and the vamp-y action top notch. However, BLOODSHIFTED is also the last book, and as a result, I had to judge it as such. As far as conclusions go, it fell short in a number of pretty significant areas, namely the secondary characters (including the love interest) were for the most part MIA, and the ending was way too open-ended for a finale in my opinion. Those points aside, I really did enjoy this novel, its extra bloody and violent which is just the way I like ‘em!

DEADSHIFTED ended on a rather brutal cliffhanger, and I’m pretty sure that I was the first in line to receive an advanced copy for review because I was quite gung-ho for book 5. Luckily, Alexander’s assistant is a doll and humoured me. Anyway, once received I dived right in and was thrilled to discover that the story picked up right where it left off. There’s a lot going on in this installment with multiple plot threads including freeing the mysterious vampire prisoner, putting an end to Natasha’s research, Raven using Edie to set a trap for Anna, and Jackson’s questionable loyalties. The Catacombs are no Y4, but I was happy to see Spence back in a medical-type setting, and loved the unexpected turn that the main story arc takes.

It took me five novels to be able to fully grasp Edie’s character because I struggled to understand her willingness to put others’ lives above her own. Having had little to no contact with nurses personally, it was difficult for me to comprehend her profession’s calling. But, it’s also one of the aspects that I enjoyed most about this series; Spence truly is in a league all of her own as far as heroines go. In this installment she struggles with her new daytimer side which helped to balance out her benevolent nature; it also allowed me to gain a newfound respect for her because it permitted her to make some difficult decisions when the situation called for it. My only complaint where Edie is concerned were her countless conversations with her View Spoiler » throughout this book. They drove me absolutely b-a-n-a-n-a-s.

As previously mentioned, I did have a few issues with this novel on account of it being the finale, but before I get in to those I thought I should mention that Alexander’s publisher discontinued this series. I understand that the author had to finagle a last minute conclusion, and the challenges that that presented, however I believe that she could have handled it better. My main beef was with the secondary characters, or rather their absence; it was hard to say good bye to them when they were barely a blip on the radar. I was especially disappointed by the minute role that Asher played in this book considering that he’s the main love interest, and their HEA was lukewarm at best. I think this novel would have greatly benefited from an epilogue because although I understand the author’s desire to leave herself some room to maneuver should she decide to self-publish, the conclusion was far too open-ended to be able to satisfy this reader.

It’s with a heavy heart that I bid adieu to the EDIE SPENCE series. I can’t help but feel like the heroine’s adventures are far from over, but at least BLOODSHIFTED provided readers with some closure.

The Edie Spence urban fantasy series is one of my faves. So I've been putting off reading the last book. Don't ask me why, but I do this all the time. O_o

Anyway. This week, I decided it was time to find out how her tale ends.

After almost dying on the cruise from hell, Edie finds herself tied to a vampire. She'd rather not be, but it was the only thing that would guarantee her survival. The only way to give her unborn baby a chance at life. Only problem is that she's now a daytimer. She's got Raven's blood in her, and while it makes her stronger, it also means she's hidden away in the catacombs beneath a nightclub in LA.

Edie is basically a slave, but to make the time go faster, she throws herself into the work of cleaning and serving and trying to stay out of trouble. But with a few Shadows tagging along, an ancient vampire invading her dreams, and the other daytimers to compete with, she has to keep her wits and be willing to do whatever it takes to survive. Even if it means she has to surrender to a darkness she never expected...

Wow. I knew this book would be good, but I didn't expect to be so captivated by every page that I didn't want to put it down. Oh, okay, I did expect that. LOL.

Edie has been through a LOT, but what she goes through in this book is heart-wrenching. In order to keep her baby safe, she's separated from the man she loves, her family and her friends. And although she finds herself sinking fast into darkness, she fights it all the way. That's one of the best things about Edie. That no matter what she has to do or how far she's pushed, she never forgets she's a nurse and her need to help others always wins.

I really enjoyed this last gruelling adventure, but I'm sad to see her series end. I would've loved to find out what happened to Anna, and to her latest ally. Plus it would've been awesome to meet her baby. But I had a great time reading this series and all five books will permanently have a place on my keeper shelf.

Oh my! What a wrap up to one of my newer series but I am hoping Cassie will get the chance to write the last installment. This is a good end but does leave you on a bit of a cliffhanger but not to the point where you feel empty of an ending. Yes I do still want to see more of Edie's life and how it changes after this book but I will be happy with my own thoughts to fill in the blanks until Cassie gets a chance to find the time to continue on.
Edie finds herself amongst the monster again but now she is not just fighting for herself. She is now fighting to survive for her and her baby along with the rest of man kind. If the vampires succeed with what they have planned we as humans are done for. Edie is familiar with daytimes as a nurse on the secret floor at the hospital but she now has to deal with becoming one. This is definitely new territory for her and one she has to really juggle within her own morals and limitations as a pregnant woman under vampire control while fighting for her survival. How far will she go to live while going against everything she believes in?

3.5 stars. Let me start with this: I'm a fan of the series. I think it's good that the author is taking the books in a different direction, instead of just going with the hospital trauma of the week, though I do really enjoy when the stories are set in the medical background because Alexander is able to make them so real and just bring the settings to life. But it can be good for a series after a few books to have a new story arc, which book four seemed to start and if there was a book six maybe that would have wrapped or not, who knows. I would have liked a whole arc of Evie and Asher working together, I like to see couples get past the will-they-or-won't-they and work as a team. And getting deeper into exploring the vampire underworld of this series makes a lot of sense. Everything started with Evie and Anna so it makes sense that it should be fleshed out, so to speak, at some point.

But. What I liked about Evie in the beginning was that she was a totally normal woman who just got caught up in this crazy stuff. She wasn't powerful, she wasn't immensely brave, and she felt real. Now she's just typical bullheaded urban fantasy chick, typical Too Stupid To Live and sometimes she makes me nuts. In this book and the last she constantly begging to get killed because she's so brave and just needs to save everyone no matter how risky it is to herself, and when the heck did this woman become a hero? How was it her job to save the 4000 people on that boat in the last book, or now she has to figure out how to stop the evil vampires from their dastardly plan, even if she doesn't actually know which vampires are evil (or more evil?) and if it kills her and her baby. Evie never seriously considers trying to just get away and tell someone else to deal with it, like Anna or the Consortium,, maybe the werewolves would want to stop the vampires from being able to, well, do what they were going to do, I don't know this world well but if I can think of some, I bet she could have if she tried. If they knew about the danger, if she lived to get out of there and tell them. But she was determined to do everything herself. A basic definition of TSTL - trying to save the world without a plan and being shocked when the whole thing goes sideways.

"Then again, I was pregnant. Maybe now was a great time to be a bystander for fucking once. [Yes, idiot!!]...The thing about saving the world is that it's hardly ever the last minute choice that does it–it's the infinite number is choices you make on the way there that wind up making you who you want to be." Seriously??? She's put a lot of thought into saving the world. And who she wants to be relative to it. I get it, she's leading up to thinking about if she can live with herself if she chooses herself over new victims of this crazy nest of vampires. But oh, the nutty writing! "...The mom in me, the fiancé in me, and most especially the nurse in me could not." The nurse I get, but I'm pretty sure you kid and fiancé would want you to live, lady. Especially Asher, who was furious with you for all of the risks you took on the cruise ship.

How about when the big fight is happening upstairs and Edie heads right into it instead of trying to hide somewhere. Gemellus needed to go up to fight Raven, but why did human Evie need to be there? Oh yeah, because she's Too Stupid To Live. Plus she can't be used as a hostage if she isn't there. And it's no fun to just hear about fights after; I'm sure she just wanted to see the action. And how sad is it that she considers Anna to be her best friend? I've thought before that she needed some friends, but that is just pitiful.

Look, I do kind of dig that Edie was put to the test in this book and really had to change and toughen up. She did a lot of things that she wouldn't have done only to protect herself, but when it came to making sure she stayed alive to protect her baby there was a profound change in this woman who both as a nurse and just from her basic nature is deeply orientation toward protecting people. Plus it's hard to say how much influence being a daytimer and having Raven's blood in her had, it seemed to make her mind go in more ruthless and violent directions than normal. So I got what Alexander was trying to do, showing the clash between Evie's fundantal nature as a life saver and being in a desperate situation and seeing what she's do under the worst of circumstances, surrounded by, and partially converted into, life takers. I do just wish Alexander could show the struggle without making Evie so darn stupid all of the time! Not that I want her to be a coward, or that a book about a woman hiding in her room would be fun, but I just would like to see some balance, some sense of reality in my fantasy book.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like I'm going to get it. Apparently the publisher is even dumber than Edie and has dropped the series. I may whine a bit about Edie's choices, but I was still here from day one and had planned to be for many more books to come. And apparently Alexander was too because this book was in no way a series finale, it ends very much with a lead-in to a next book. Maybe she's hoping to self-publish in the future, it's worked for other authors. I hope so, with a built in fan base she should be able to do well, I'd think. I know Kelly Meding did it for her Dreg City books. I'm not sure what other authors might have tried specifically to continue an alreay active and successful series (even if not as successful as the publishing house wants to see). But a lot of fans would be on board for book six, that's for sure.

This was a good end to the series. From the comments I have read, although the author knew the series has been cancelled prior to this release, it wasn't enough time to tie everything up in a neat little bow. I kind of liked the fact that it was open ended. I have faith that Anna will come back and they will make it safely home. I wish we could have seen what was going to happen with Gemellus. He is such an interesting character, I'm sad that his introduction was at the end.

I have a medical background so this series appealed to me. I enjoy different takes on the vampire universe as well.
I see that this was originally published in 2014 and we were left hanging with no last book to the series.

I'm hoping this author revisits and gives us that final read.
I really enjoyed this series.

This book takes up right where the last one left off, with Edie in the hands of Raven, the vampire who answered Anna’s call to save Edie’s life by giving her his blood, healing her and giving her some of the vampire’s strength and endurance, which makes her a Daytimer. Unfortunately, this also puts Edie under the control of Raven, who can order her to do anything at all and she will be compelled to obey. She just needs to survive and keep her baby safe until Anna can come for her, and she’s determined to do that, no matter what. She’s all alone in this vampire haven, but she makes some unlikely allies, including some of the familiar Shadows and an unknown vampire that is visiting her dreams and asking her to rescue him. Then there is Natasha, another Daytimer, who’s experiments might be able to give Raven the upper hand over Anna, which doesn’t bode well for Edie. I loved the way Edie fights for herself and her unborn baby, doing whatever it takes to get out of the situation and get back to her life with Asher. I’ve really enjoyed this series and I’m sad to hear that Bloodshifted will be the last book. Although there is a bit of a cliff hanger ending, it was satisfying in that it wrapped up that story arc, but I’d really like to see what happens next to Edie and friends. I hope the author is able to produce more books in the series with another publisher or perhaps independently.

**I received this book for free from NetGalley/St. Martin's in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.**

*MY THOUGHTS*

Bloodshifted (Edie Spence # 5) is apparently the last book in the series. According to the authors own web page, she is working on other things, including a new erotica series, and perhaps a Young Adult novel. If things work out, hey book number SIX! If not, c'est la vie! It's been nice knowing you, Edie, Asher, Anna, and baby Edie!

As a story, Bloodshifted is an awesome example of the courage, determination, and stamina that Edie has had to face since she was first introduced to the paranormal world in Nightshifted. Since surviving the events on the Maraschino where she barely managed to survive after being infected by a parasite, Edie has found herself becoming something that she never in a million years imagined; a Daytimer who just happens to be pregnant, and her future clearly in the hands of others.

Reading that this is the final book in the series I feel a little differently about this book. Although my feelings did not change that much (just feel stronger). What I mean by this is that after reading Deadshifted I was looking forward to reading this book because I wanted to see how Edie would survive her capture with her pregnancy. At this time I did not know this book was the last. So, reading it did not feel like the last book in this series. It felt as if the decision to end it was after this book was written. Even the ending did not seem like a conclusion.

All the time I was reading this book I was only semi interested in what was happening. Edie was cool but even she could not hold the story as a lead the whole way through. Yet the second half of the book is better then the first half. Still an Edie fan.

Another dive into the depths of this page turning series led me back to Edie's side. The writing immerses the reader into the setting - coming face to face with their horrors, experiencing their emotions. I don't know how many times I almost reached out to try to knock some sense into one or more of them - like I was standing right there with them - living the fear, gore, pain, sorrow but also the acceptance, friendship and love!
From "Nightshifted" to "Bloodshifted" you can really see Edie's character growth. Being a nurse takes a lot of guts and strength to begin with. But the challenges that Edie encounters could make the toughest person crumble.
Book 5 starts exactly where the previous installment ended. I like the turn of events here. I almost thought something like this would have happened sooner. But, on the other hand, I believe Edie's humanity and the morals she upholds for herself are a statement unto themselves. And having lasted as long as she has in this wild, paranormal world within the normal and staying sane,? Staying human?! Again, it is a testament to Edie's strong character and will.
The growth of the assorted supporting characters should also be mentioned. People you "hated" on Edie's behalf, people you thought were friends and allies are as impressive and as impactful as our heroine. Without realizing it, they have all wormed their way into the necessity of not only the story itself but of realm of the readers existence within the pages. They become the reader's adversaries, friends, or loves.
I have truly enjoyed this series and understand...there being a cliffhanger and all- that another book is due but may be awhile in coming. That's ok...I'll wait. Hopefully Edie and her band of misfits will endure until we meet again.
Very entertaining (but should definitely start at the beginning of the series)!

Bloodshifted is the fifth and last book in the Edie Spence series by Cassie Alexander. I am sad to see it end. I fell in love with Edie Spence with the first book Nightshifted. Each and every book is unique in its own way with so much to offer. I truly loved reading each and every book in the Edie Spence series and would truly love to have read more.

I love the world that was created for the Edie Spence series. I dived head-first into each of the books in this series and didn’t come up for air until the last page was read. The Edie Spence series is one that you want to read over and over again for years to come.

The world-building for this one was awesome, to say the least. The descriptions were so vivid I felt as if I was a part of its world as if I was a character in the story. I could feel all of Edie’s feelings as she dealt with all the things that she had to endure and make life decisions.

Edie was a nurse no matter if she was working in a hospital or not. Edie had to always help people no matter the cost to herself it is what she was made to do. Edie always wanted to do what was right for humans or vampires. That is just the way her heart is made.

Bloodshifted picks up where Deadshifted left off. Edie has been captured by the vampires and taken aboard a cruise ship. Edie is taken to live underground with the vampires underneath a nightclub. Edie is biding her time until the day she can escape the vampires. Edie is doing everything possible to make her escape possible.

Edie is Pregnant. Edie has been fed on by a vampire and now she is a daytimer. Being a daytimer means she is being controlled by the vampire that made her a daytimer. Edie will do whatever it takes to protect her baby. And if being with the vampires until her baby is born then so be it.

If you love reading books about vampires then I highly recommend you give this one a try! I do not believe that you would be disappointed in the least! Grab a copy of Bloodshifted today!

I really enjoyed this final book in this series and am sad that there will be no more, especially as there was a bit of cliffhanger ending and could have easily had another book or two! But it is what it is!

This one picks up straight after book #4 Deadshifted. Having been saved by the vampire Raven, Edie is now a daytimer and despite her previous experiences with daytimers in Ward Y4, nothing has really prepared her for this! Jealousy and treachery are ripe in Raven's catacombs that's for sure and Edie definitely has to keep her wits about her if she is going to survive long enough for her baby to arrive or for Anna to save her, whichever comes first.

However, she is not one to just sit back and wait to be rescued! Oh no! She does everything she can to find her own escape, even if it means doing some unforgivable things at times and risk being caught!

I really liked the fact that Edie has a couple of allies on her side, even if she couldn't fully trust them. And I loved Asher's secret appearance too - I had hoped he would whisk her away there and then, but it wasn't to be!

While I understand why there will be no more books in this series yet, I still wish there will be one as there's still some unanswered questions I want to be answered. Fingers crossed for a new book in this series one day! It's been a great read and I have really loved getting to know these characters and reading all about their adventures!

I was lucky enough to receive all the copies of this series through BookSirens, but this review (and all my others for the rest of this series) are my honest, own opinion!

Abducted by the vampire Raven, Edie is taken to the catacombs beneath the Catacombs, an ironically-named L.A. night club that supplies fresh blood and other favors for its vampire Masters. But if she and Asher—her shapeshifter fiancé—can’t figure out a way to bleed Raven’s power, they may never get out of this plasma-soaked pleasure palace…undead or alive.

"Edie Spence has a distinctive, appealing and no-nonsense style that you won’t quickly forget. Add to that a paranormal population that needs medical care for some very odd reasons, and you have a winner of a debut novel."* —*Kate Elliott, author of the *Cold Magic* series

"Fresh, exciting, dark, and sexy, *Nightshifted* is excellent urban fantasy that grabs you by the throat and pulls you along for a wild ride. Cassie Alexander is an author to watch!" *—*Diana Rowland, author of *Mark of The Demon

*"Alexander’s first novel launches a new series that should appeal to fans of medical thrillers as well as urban fantasy."* —Library Journal*

"*Nightshifted* is like a dark and twisted version of *Grey’s Anatomy* with vampires, zombies, and werewolves taking up residence in County Hospital’s Y4 wing…The story moves at a similar pace to a hospital setting where there are small lulls in action and with sudden, even frantic bursts of action. That sort of pacing made *Nightshifted* an exciting read as I was constantly on edge, waiting to see what was going to happen next." *—All Things Urban Fantasy

*

"I loved this book. What a breath of fresh air! A very strong start to what promises to be a wonderful new series!" *—My Bookish Ways*

"Alexander has created a wonderful world of paranormal that we don’t usually get to see. Edie Spence is so wonderfully human in a world of ghost CD players, vampires, zombies, weres, shifters and crappy pay checks. Read this book and you will be swooning (I promise), yelling and laughing all at the same time. A must read indeed!" *—Bodice Rippers, Femme Fatales and Fantasy

*

"Edie is a fun character with heart and charisma, making it easy to fall for her and want to see her succeed in all of her adventures, whether they be dealing with paranormal patients, evil vampires, or potential lovers. "Edie is stone cold awesome. She’s scrappy, fiercely independent, and by the time the conclusion came around I wanted to share a fist bump of solidarity with her." —*The Book Smugglers

One word: emotional! Book #5 of the Edie Spence series, and, after the cliffhanger of Deadshifted, we find Edie once again between a rock and a hard place. Nothing new with her… but this time, our normal, anti-heroine Edie is not human anymore. After the disaster with the Maraschino, she comes back transformed into a daytimer, the same kind of being she was used to attending at Y4, to save her and Asher’s baby.

So, you would expect 9 months of keeping quiet, taking care of herself and her baby… but Edie, being Edie, cannot avoid ending up in trouble. Well, trouble is her middle name. Another amazing installment, full of misadventures, in Cassie Alexander’s style, among vampires, daytimers, the Shadows, a mad-scientist’s lab, crazy experiments, an ancient vampire prisoner, and Edie’s incapacity to keep quiet.

The book is not the last in the series; sometime in the future, there will be a real finale with “Shadowshifted,” but there is no date yet. I’m dying to know what will happen with Edie, her baby, Asher, Ana, and all the rest of her friends.

And for the moment, read Bloodshifted; you won’t regret it.

Always a pleasure to revisit with Edie and the fairly weird, strange and don't forget DANGEROUS found family she's aquired.

Bloodshifted picks up immediately at the conclusion of book four and knowing our girl we ALL are aware that things are going to get worse, much worse, before seeing that light at the end of the tunnel. Or in this case the deepening darkness at the end of multiple tunnels.

I absolutely love this series PRECISELY because it's hard to pin down and original. I understand that it's difficult to market in this day and age but genuinely from the depths of my heart, if you like off the wall, might be horror, might be suspense, might be romance, might be supernatural critters but ALWAYS entertaining! The Edie Spence Blood novels fit the bill!

She can take the most unredeamable character and make you genuinely like them. (I'm looking at you Dren).

Will be waiting patiently for Edie's happy(ish) ending.

I have followed this series faithfully through and enjoyed every single wild minute of it! But after the cliff hanger of the fourth book, Deadshifted, it left us wondering what is going to happen to poor Edie! I was so excited when this book was finally released that I could find out what happens!

Edie Spence has been finding herself in trouble constantly since trying to do well for her brother by ensuring his sobriety in exchange for working as a nurse on Y4. Being introduced to the world of paranormal has been an adventure to say the least! Edie has a strong personality and Alexander really draws you in to Edie, making you wish you could reach through the pages and help her.

This is such a great paranormal series with so many different characters throughout. I don't want to give too much away since this is book 5, but if you're interested in paranormal mystery, fantasy with a bit of romance mingled in, then pick up the Edie Spence series!

Thank you to Booksirens for my ebook!

This particular book is incredibly fast-paced full of dangerous situations especially for Edie. There are some massive ethical dilemmas that Edie faces and this is the first one in the series that has no spicy scenes, but honestly I think I liked it more than the previous books because we get more plot and character development. And things start coming together. This does end in a manner that leads to more questions, but I know that Cassie wanted to write another in this series but the themes of this series don't match what she has been writing recently so we may have to wait awhile before getting to the end of the series. I'm okay with waiting. I really like Edie, and love the grounded realistic approach the character has when she is tossed into the supernatural world.

4 out of 5 stars for the plot and characters.

Thank you to BookSirens and Cassie for the opportunity to read the free advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own.

Edie has been saved by the vampire Raven, which has made her a daytimer herself, and despite having looked after them in Ward Y4 she was totally unprepared. Now bound to Raven, she's taken to his catacombs where no-one is her friend with jealousy and treachery everywhere. Edie will need to keep her head if she is going to survive long enough to have her baby, or be saved by Anna; she just doesn't know which will happen first.

A well written vampire read, with plenty drama, action, a kidnapping, friendship and love. A great read and there's a definite cliffhanger at the end but we will have to wait for the next in this series.

Edie finds herself in increasingly bizarre situations, but still does her best to be a good person and make choices that don’t harm others, even when those choices are very hard. Having found real love with Asher, she is loathe to lose it, but still, to her detriment, generally thinks first of others. I really like Edie. Her world has been up ended repeatedly, yet she just keeps pushing forward. Bad things happen to her but she keeps her wits about her. She is a great character. Can’t wait for the final book in the series!

Edie Spence just cannot get a break.

Don't take this the wrong way, but reading this book is like watching a slow motion train wreck. You're afraid to keep reading, but you just can't stop.

I love Edie Spence and I love this series, but I don't know how much more I can take. Ms. Alexander just keeps ratcheting up… well, everything. The stakes are higher with a baby on the way and now as a daytimer, Edie is subject to the whims of a vampire she just met, as well as the rest of his coven who don't take kindly to new blood.

OK, I feel better now. I am ready for the next one please.

Ummmm… Wow. This book took us deeper than ever before into the inner workings of vampire society. And where Edie lands, is a more brutal, less forgiving place than I’d ever imagined. (And I say that knowing what Anna, Edie, and even Asher have been through before.) The story picks up immediately where the last book left off and the action, suspense, and tension don’t let go even until the finish. This book brought all kinds of new complications into Edie’s life and I, for one, can’t wait to find out how the aftermath will play out. My fingers are crossed that I won’t be left waiting too long to find out.

Is Escape Even Possible ? . . .

Nurse Edie Spence is in a race against time. Captured by vampires, she must plan for her escape somehow. She is pregnant and wants to get her baby to safety. But a vampire has already fed on her, making her a daytimer, and will now become her Master and control her. Will she be able to find a way to escape? Or will she have to remain where she is and give birth there before she can hope to take her child to safety?

The author does a good job at bringing this world to life… or is it actually “death”? She makes it real and gives us characters we can care about to keep us on edge. Grab your copy and see how Edie’s story will resolve!

Eddie has a knack of getting into the worst possible trouble. Bound as a daytimer to the violent, ruthless vampire, Raven in order to save her and her unborn child from an incurable virus is just the start. His other vampires are equally unpleasant and then there are the other daytimers who also appear to want her dead. And then things get unbelievably worse.

Just like the rest of the series this is an absolutely all consuming story. If you only read one series this year you should absolutely make it this one!.

Glad that's over. I was hoping things would perk up after book 4 (also a 2 star), but it was not meant to be. Gone are the humor, creativity, and world building. Gone is the Nurse Edie that was so cool in books 1-3. She's been replaced with a cardboard cutout character who is dull as nails and TDTL. There was also nothing new to learn here about the author's vampire world (or at least very little) and zero new monsters. If a book #6 appears, I'll probably read it, but I fear it will be even worse once the reader has to deal with spawn of Edie and Asher.

A day timer not by her choice, Edie must serve the master who feed her his blood. Trying to escape the cruel vamps she must worry about protecting the baby she carries. Can she hold on long enough for Asher to save her and their child. I was left wanting more and can't wait for the next story. Always the nurse she saves the sire of her master and he is now in her debt. The Shadows play a part in her escape as well, I loved it.
