Major Mark Riley plays Court Jester to Janelle Walsh's Snow Queen at the Christmas Parade and is instantly captivated by the cute redhead whose grandpa just happens to be Santa. When Mark learns she's the tenant he evicted from his newly purchased property, it's going to take a little bit of Santa's mistletoe magic to save their romance.

Mistletoe Magic by Stacey Joy Netzel is a fantastic contemporary holiday book. This is a fairly quick read, perfect for those with limited reading time. Ms. Netzel has delivered a book that is well-written and filled it with warm, lovable characters. Major Mark Riley leaves the military and arrives in his hometown just in time for the Christmas parade. Janelle goes from elf to Snow Queen for the parade. Mark and Janelle's story is full of drama, humor, spice and menagerie of displaced critters. I enjoyed reading Mistletoe Magic and look forward to reading more from Stacey Joy Netzel in the future.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book that I won. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Anyone who reads my reviews regularly, knows I’m a sucker for series books; especially those that revolve around families. When I downloaded the first book in this series for free, I knew I’d be purchasing the next two if the first book was any good. Since I enjoyed it, I downloaded the next two immediately. To me the first book in a series is like the appetizer of a meal; it’s good, it fills the void, but it’s doesn’t completely satisfy your appetite. I’ve spent a lot to time thinking about this because I read a lot of series and I know the reason I feel this way is because I don’t have a previous relationship with the characters when starting a series. So consequently, book one is not usually my favorite, although for me there is one exception to this rule. (If you want to know which series is the exception post below and ask, and I’ll tell you.) While I enjoyed Mistletoe Rules, I felt more “at home” with Mistletoe Magic because I already have a connection with the people in this book. Not to mention I liked the heroine much more in this story!
Mistletoe Magic centers around Mark Riley whose brother Eric, was featured in book one. Mark is freshly discharged from the military. He’s returned to his hometown desperate for a fresh start and plans on building a serene lake retreat for vacationers. First he has to evict the tenant living on his land, something he’s leaving to an attorney as he really has no interest in getting involved with a crazy, old lady. Janelle Walsh has lived in town since she came to live with her grandparents following her parent’s untimely deaths. She helps her Grandfather with various Christmas projects and volunteers for many different worthwhile charities including the animal rescue she runs. When she is served an eviction notice, she’s upset but when she finds out Mark is behind it, she’s stunned.
I really liked both the characters in this book. Mark has some baggage from his time in the military and it plays a big part in why he reacts the way he does to some situations. He’s such a contradiction; he can be witty, charming and fun loving one minute and brooding, moody, and hot tempered the next. He’s complex with some issues he needs to work through but deep down he’s a decent guy. Janelle is one of those kooky people you can’t help but like. While it seems she wanders aimlessly through life, that’s not really the case. She’s very devoted, hard working, and has a kind and caring heart.
As with the first book, this relationship goes from 0-60 quite quickly. I’ve decided I’m just going to have to blame it on the mistletoe and Santa “Butch”. I really love the compromise that comes out of Mark and Janelle getting together and I loved seeing all of the characters from the previous book. Most of all I found this book will put you in the holiday mood and hopefully make you believe that “mistletoe rules!”
After reading the first book in the Romancing Wisconsin Series by Stacey Joy Netzel entitled Mistletoe Mischief, I was excited about Mark's story in the second book, Mistletoe Magic due to the presented excerpt, return of Santa Butch and Mark's flirty nature. I was slightly disappointed and I couldn't quite put my finger on what didn't work. I still enjoyed the story, but I can't help but feel that it could have been much more.
Retired Major Mark Riley has returned back to Pulaski, Wisconsin and has big plans to help the small town economy while settling close to his family. His brother, Eric is now married to Marissa. He has a growing family with two youngsters, Reese and Heather, and a baby on the way. Mark would like his own slice of heaven now that he can put down roots. This is where he meets the Snow Queen, Janelle Walsh.
Santa's helper and the pointed ear elf, Janelle Walsh is a red-haired beauty teeming with generosity. Anything with a Christmas theme, is up her alley since her Grandpa and Grandma, are the town's adopted Santa and Mrs. Claus. In addition, her main job involves running an rescue shelter for abused, abandoned and mistreated animals. It has given purpose to her life. However, the mischievous elf is attracted to the Major after their first meeting mishap.
The story takes off from there and is full of conflict, humour and realizations. The character development is nicely done. It is great to see some of the other characters from the first book. The authoress even weaves in the detrimental effects and emotional upheaval of war into the story. Facing adversity in the midst of chaos is also touched upon. I am appreciative of all these aspects. However, the book takes a small nosedive three-quarters of the way.
I am not a big fan of the instantaneous attraction trope and enjoy the build up more. That is not what bothered me. It seemed that the authoress changed the characters around, the flirting cooled, and the conflict with its usual fun give and take was forgotten. It got wrapped up too quickly and the reader was left feeling adrift. Even though Janelle and Mark are extraordinary protagonists based on their personality and what they have done, their interactions at the end felt off, somehow.
Still, I did like the book and I am eager to read Derek's Story in Mistletoe Match-Up. I will continue to follow Stacey Joy Netzel and look forward to exploring her other works. If you are looking for Christmas themed small-town romance with cute animals and some exceptional moments to fit the requirements of a quick read, you will revel in this tale.
Absolutely charming and lovely story, a bit on the short side for my taste, but then, most books are. Janelle, who's changed her home into an animal rescue place, is quite taken by Mark, newly come back to town after his time with the army, and the feeling seems to be quite mutual. That is, until they find out that Mark is the new owner of her house and has just sent her an eviction notice to vacate the premises by Christmas Eve.... Sparks fly between the two, and although the ending is quite predictable (it is a Christmas story, sort of, after all), the way to that ending has been told and presented with very likeable and a bit quirky characters, a great plot and very good narration style. Everything comes together just right to give the reader a nice warm feeling at the end of this story. I am really looking forward to reading more in this series.
Stacey Joy Netzel’s Mistletoe Magic is a delightful and amusing contemporary holiday romance story. In it we meet two charming, yet opposite, personalities in Janelle and Mark. Janelle is a cute redhead. She is a pixie who runs a quasi-animal rescue. She is a tenant on the property that Mark just purchased. Mark is retired military man. When he meets Janelle, he is unaware that she is the tenant is about to evict on Christmas Eve.
This holiday romance follows a predictable plot—boy meets girl, sparks fly, tension grows, arguments ensue, tensions grow, and then its happily ever after. Despite this predictability, Ms. Netzel’s characters are what makes this story shine. She is skilled in crafting dialog. The banter between Mark and Janelle and Mark and his brother, Eric, is amusing. She further enhanced her story through her use of descriptive language that painted vibrant holiday scenes. The winter landscape and the holiday parade all capture the spirit of the season. I suggest this book to readers who want to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the upcoming holiday season. Grab a copy and sit in front of a warm fire and simply escape in this delightful holiday romance. Happy Reading!
Like the first book in the Romancing Wisconsin series, Mistletoe Mischief, Mistletoe Magic is cute, quick, and typical for a holiday romance. There are really no surprises. You get to connect to Eric and Marissa again and find out what’s been going on in their lives for the last year. Hint: it’s quite a bit! And, you get a fresh installment on how Mark assimilates into the Pulaski, WI community.
Major Mark Riley buys a property upon leaving the military. Too bad the sellers misled him about the so called crazy living there. Janelle is just trying to keep the abused pet rescue viable.... the one she and Maggie were running before Maggie passed away and her greedy relations sold the property.
This is a sweet story. A little unbelievable that they fell in love in less than two weeks especially when they spent most of it not talking. The characters are really enjoyable and I liked that Mark realised that he could have his retreat and help the rescue animals at the same time. Christmas miracles do exist.
I loved the characters in the first book in this series. Unfortunately this time around, the characters just weren't as engrossing. Mark and Janelle were boring and just didn't fit with each other to me. Hopefully the next book in the series will rebound and be better.
Such a fun story of find8ng your home and find8ng yourself. Mark and Janelle make quite the pair. Enjoyed seeing them come together and how well they fit together
I liked the town, the people, and the Christmas spirit everyone had. This was a good story about a couple meeting again after years living in separate places. Really enjoyed this story.
Kenna is back and more troubles follow! This is the third book in the series and all are excellent! Well written, with a great plot and characters. Loved it!
This is a fun one by Stacey Joy Netzel! I love the chemistry between Mark and Janelle and the way they give each other a hard time. I want to be friends with this couple!
I didn't feel like there was even a plot until halfway through and even then, it was very rushed, no depth to it whatsoever and you felt like you didn't really know the characters.
An enjoyable story to fit into my December Christmas Themed reading! Great characters. A little more than magic to the story. There's some forgiveness too!
A very short story. They fall in love in less then two weeks. Really hard to believe as they spend a large portion of their time fighting. Didn't love the story.
The characters were detailed, but the depth wasn't there. Felt like an outline rather than a completed story. Conflict needs to be ramped up and the first part of the meeting fell flat.
Got some free Christmas books, I figured it was time to read one of them... I didn't like it. It was ok overall, but nothing special to make it stand out, it didn't really draw me in. In general holiday stories are strange, but this one played on the hole Santa is my Grandpa theme too much for my liking. Their moving in together felt off. His reasons for moving back home and taking her dreams from her was forced. Maybe if I had read book 1 this would have felt more complete as a story, but then again... maybe not.

Mistletoe Magic by Stacey Joy Netzel Romancing Wisconsin Series Book 2 In this book we are introduced to Major Mark Riley, plus Santa Butch & Judy’s granddaughter Janelle Walsh, and other family members. Major Mark Riley is there to play the Court Jester to Janelle Walsh’s Snow Queen at the Christmas Parade and he is captivated instantly by the cute redhead. Only much later he realized that she is the tenant he is evicting from his newly purchased property and that does not play well in his trying to make points with her. He may need some of the Santa mistletoe magic in order to save their romance. Mark played the job as the jester wonderfully. He helps her down from the wagon and he figures then he tries for the kiss now or he might not get another chance. Mark is buying the property where Janelle lives. She wanted to have it be a shelter for animal’s no one wanted and Mark plans to turn it into cabins with some for veterans and their families and some for others. The bad news he will be evicting her on Christmas Eve. Will the definite chemistry between Mark and Janelle survive all this turmoil? Could love again prevail with that little help from Santa? At this point I am thinking this Santa must be real. When he first met the animals he had some look into his eyes and it made him think of his time in the military and he had flash backs from the military. But he does change his mind about the animals are realizes they can help the Veterans that stay there also mend. Mark and Janelle do not stand a chance once Santa Butch has cast that spell. Plus, Janelle helps Mark lose some of the rough edges from his time in the military. I love Stacey Joe Netzel’s writing style and Book 3 will prove just as good as Books 1 & 2.
A cute, heart warming short story that will have you melting long before you are done reading. Mark is home for good, after serving fifteen years in the military, with the last tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He figures his luck is about to run out after watching most of his crew either loose their lives in service, or wounded to the point that the choice to serve is no longer theirs to make. He's bought a resort property in the outskirts of his home town with great plans to make it prosper and help with the town's economy. Only one problem...the previous owner had a tenant, along with a whole bunch of rescued animals, of which their eyes are haunted, much like those of his previous team members. Now that he's the owner, all he's waiting for is to have the eviction order served so he can start the renos. Janelle has been living at Whispering Pines Resort for the past nine years, helping the ageing Maggie with her animal rescue operation. What she doesn't expect is to find Mark Riley on the side of the road on her way to the Christmas parade in town...the one she's organized, and if she doesn't get there soon, will be late for. Neither does she expect to feel the way she does when she lays eyes on him. Those sparks are charging up all kinds of feelings she's not sure she wants to feel. But that's not the only surprise Mark has in store for her. Will Santa be able to grant them both what they truly want for Christmas? Or will they each be destined to live out their lives alone and lonely? A wonderful short read right in time for the holidays.
In this Christmas Romance, Mark has left the military life and purchased property in Pulaska with the hopes of turning the property into a lakeside resort of sorts, bringing jobs and tourists to the community who will no doubt bring money with them and part with it there. When he has a flat tire on the way to the Christmas parade, he hitches a ride into town with Janelle Walsh and her wagon and team of horses. There is major attraction between the two of them but it seems Mark has a way of putting his foot into it. Janelle is trying hard to use her head and not let her heart rule in this relationship with Major Mark Riley. And they find themselves on opposite sides regarding the property he has just purchased. How can they both be so attracted to one another and yet so far apart on the property issue?
Sometimes, absence does make the heart reveal itself and Christmas magic doesn't hurt one bit!
This was another quick read and even more fun than Mischief. The characters were well defined as both Mark and Janelle struggled to reconcile their differences without losing face. It was an easy read; less than a day to complete it and all the reader, (Moi) had to do was enjoy and relax. At this high pressure time of year, who can't benefit from that?
So the Riley boys have told their story and now it's time to read about their sister, Lisa, in Mistletoe Match-Up. But that's for another day; think I'll wait a bit to review Lisa's story.
This was a good romance to read at Christmas time. Mark Riley and Janelle Walsh met when they were last minute fill-ins for the Court Jester and Snow Queen parts in the Christmas Parade. Their attraction for each other was a problem when they realized Mark was the new owner of the property Jannelle used for rescue animals and was evicting her on Christmas Eve.
This Christmas story definitely helped put me in the holiday spirit with the mistletoe, parade and Santa Butch. Janelle is a loving woman who cares deeply for the animals in the rescue center and everyone else in her life. She's a smart, hard working woman and very far from the old lady Mark thought ran the animal rescue. After leaving the military, Mark bought property in the small town of Pulaska planning on building a resort to bring tourists and their money to the area. It's a good idea but doesn't work with Jannelle's plans. He's a good guy who is kind and charming most of the time. But sometimes he's short tempered and not so easy to be with.
Are Jannelle and Mark going to be able to build on their feelings? Maybe Santa Butch and some mistletoe will help them resolve their property problems and find romance.
