Guardians of the Race #1

Guardian's Grace

Rate this book
Librarian's Note: this is an alternate cover edition - ASIN B0082ZE27M

Grace Masters always wanted a family she could call her own. Of course, in her imagination it didn’t include a pair of rambunctious and affectionate twins who can turn into killers within the blink of an eye or an aging vampire who has trouble controlling his thirst. She never expected to find a friend and mentor in a three hundred year old witch who looks like Sophia Loren. And she certainly never dreamed – okay, she dreamed but never thought it would come true – of a tall, handsome hero who would sweep her off her feet. Yet here she is, in an old Victorian home, living and loving under the cover of night.

Who knew that the source of her lifelong torment was really her gift as a Daughter of Man or that this gift could be controlled and used for something good? Who knew there was another race called the Paenitentia who live side by side with humans? Who knew that demons were real?

Grace certainly didn’t until one fateful night when her world falls apart and comes together again in a place where she finally feels she belongs. Sometimes a person just knows when something is right and destined to be. Sometimes convincing someone else of that fact is a little more difficult. Canaan ad Simeon is that someone else.

Canaan is Liege Lord to a House of Guardians whose job is to protect the Race from a demon threat many no longer believe in. Already breaking away from the outdated traditions that are depleting their numbers and threatened by a hierarchy resistant to change, the last thing Canaan needs is to fall for this innocently sexy Daughter of Man.

But fall he does, with a mixture of comedy, drama and sexy fun that will touch your heart.

I was shopping around on Amazon for something to read and found Jacqueline Rhoades.
Every once in a while you find a new author that writes so well that you are drawn into the book and the characters are so fleshed out that you just have to keep reading, non-stop, (even if it is into the wee hours of the morning) to find out what is going to happen to them. I found this to be such a book.
Grace, the heroine, was interesting, warm, and giving while still having a backbone among the guardians. She wasn't just the human love interest, she had powers of her own. I liked the tough bad-ass hero who was used to doing things in the same old, same old way of his people until she came into his life.
The characters had just the right blend of dark and dangerous... but honorable and giving when needed.
I had to buy the next two books of the series to see what happens in the secondary character's books and the special women they will find.

I fall in love with a good book today!
It's purr-fect! Finally some good books!

Her voice shook. Her body trembled.
"Because I love you. With all my heart and soul, I love you. Don't you see? That's why I have to leave. "

I just accidentally knew this book. At first I added this author another series, and my friend Mel told me that this author book guardian series is way better. So yeah I went for this series first. First impressions always important. And why the rating is not high?? This is a good book!

Urban fantasy packed with action and romance give a new fresh feelings.
At first the pace is slow like a turtle, the author told the stories from third person of view. So we will found different scenes and still it kept flow smooth. The way the author told the stories it will made you won't stop to read till the last pages.

The plot a little bit confusing at first, because the scenes jump from other point of view to another point of view. But after that is easy to keep track.

The storyline might be commonly known. It tell about nephilim mixed with vampire tendency. Quite intriguing.

As for the characters, well I must say not too fond of Grace but admire her too. Well probably 75%. The other characters are solid too, you will love them!

Well, I do have something in mind tho. Is the cat, Buffy, always there in the bedroom? (=゚ω゚)ノ

What a brilliant premise for this novel. I love how unique yet well developed and put together everything is. The mythology behind this story is clearly set out for the audience in an entertaining manner. This fast paced novel kept my attention throughout. It is extremely suspenseful & romantic, with just the right touch of comedic relief. For all its twists and turns, however, above all this is a story about love and loyalty and finding yourself.

Rhoades is a very visual author. Using a multiplicity of techniques she develops a world that you cannot help but see in your mind’s eye. Her writing style and tone change minutely based on the scene and it’s participants. She subtly evokes emotions in her readers through this. The dark and light of the storyline are entrenched in the reader’s psyche without Rhoades every having to state it flat out. Rhoades describes her scenes in explicit detail, drawing her readers further and further into the story.

I love how Rhoades doesn’t mince her words. She says what she means in the way real people say it. This flows directly into her dialogue. People talk like real people. Slang and swearing make their way into her novels in the manner that it does in everyday conversation. It makes everyone seem so much more real when they aren’t speaking like a textbook or sickly sweet. Rhoades writes her novels for adults without ever talking down to them or simplifying things. At the same time, the novel is naturally written. You feel like you’re still in the real world experiencing something amazing.

I found myself attached to the main characters right from the beginning of this novel. Although the cast itself is quite large, each character is individually developed. Rhoades does a brilliant job of developing everyone to suit their role. She doesn’t throw extraneous details at her readers.

GUARDIANS GRACE by Jacqueline Rhoades

Grace has never felt that she belonged. Abandoned as a young child, trying to survive in the foster care system Grace had always known she was different. If it weren’t for the continuous ‘buzzing’ in her head, maybe she would have felt ‘normal’. And when she is able to see ‘things’ that no one else was seeing, was she losing her mind or could she truly see what others could not? But the attack on a friend at the hands of demons and a rescue by 2 god-like angels (with fangs?), leave Grace reeling with the knowledge, that perhaps there is more than meets the eyes.

Twins Dov and Col are descendants of Nephilium-not yet Guardians but on patrol for demons. But when one human female has the ability to ‘see’, they know they must bring her to The House and High Lord Liege Canaan will not be too pleased. But it is Canaan who is stunned by the presence of Grace and with that, the knowledge that she would soon be his.

The Guardians are of the Race, with superior strength and speed, descended from Gabriel who are on earth to protect the humans and guard the portal, ensuring the demons do not cross the barrier. When a Guardian dies and his heart still remains within his chest, he is changed into vampire, and must be destroyed before the blood rage consumes. But we soon meet Uncle Otto, and learn that not all vampires are evil, and once they learn to control their blood rages, even vampires can love.

But demons have crossed the portal and are now are on a feeding frenzy of human flesh. Hoping to gain control of the local drug and alcohol trade, the demons continue to gorge on the blood of their victims, while the Guardians fight to save one of their own. A ‘witch’ has come into her powers and through sacrifice and blood she has unleashed a demon upon the earth, that only the Guardians will be able to control.

There are many humorous passages involving Dov and Col. Like two highly charged puppies with a new found friend, the twins reek havoc ensuring Grace feels accepted and loved at The House. Their mischievous antics keep the mood light, when anger and sorrow seem to engulf on occasion. Uncle Otto is a genuine flirt, who falls in love with Grace, but he has eyes for another from his past. Nico hides a past that is reflected with the scars both inside and out, but it is the relationship between Canaan and Grace that drives The House forward and into the future. As a Daughter of Man, Grace has the power to save where others have failed.

There are moments that will break your heart and the tears will flow. When a Guardian is chosen, his heart will blossom and when a mated-pair have bonded, a red rose will bloom. Guardians Grace is a wonderful novel for first-time author Jaclyn Rose. I look forward to her next storyline-Guardians Hope.

Guardian's Grace is an action packed adventure. Jacqueline Rhoades has taken paranormal in another direction and given us a new type of warrior. Paenitentia are Guardians who fight demons.

This book has a BDB feel to it. Rest assured it is completely different except for the fact that these Guardians are totally kick *ss!

It all begins with Grace the heroine. She goes to a party with a friend and it doesn't end well. A demon is involved and while normal humans can't see them, Grace can. She ends up in the hands of Col. and Dov. two of the Guardians in training. They don't know quite what to make of her because they can't erase her memory. They end up taking her home with them and the story goes on from there.

This book was action packed. It had a bit of mystery and lots of romance too!

I loved the characters and the way they interacted with each other. Col. and Dov. were especially fun to read about. Grace was by far my favorite character though.

I thought this story was awesome and I am glad that it is just the beginning of this series. I can't wait to read more!

I whole heartedly recommend this to everyone who likes the Black Dagger Brotherhood and books like that. If you like action and paranormal then this book is a must read!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

What a great start to a series! There are so many great things about this book that I don’t know if I can adequately put them into words. From the first sentence you are swept into a world of vampires, witches and demons. As the world unfolds for Grace, an unemployed empath, we learn about the Paenitentia and their roll in protecting humans from demons. I really loved Canaan, the Liege Lord. He makes some mistakes but he is always quick to rectify them and doesn’t hide from his feelings for Grace.

I loved how Rhodes gave a new perspective of vampires and witches. She has created a whole new background and society for them that is different from anything I have read before. There were points in the story that a lot of background was given and it did slow the pacing some but it was necessary to the world-building.

There were a few confusing moments when the point of view would change from paragraph to paragraph but that didn’t happen all that often and I was able to find my way back into the story quickly. I also was occasionally confused about the passage of time. Sometimes days or weeks would pass but that was not fully explained and it made for some confusing moments.

Overall I really loved it. The secondary characters were fantastic! There is so much that can be done with this series that I am very excited to read the rest of it. Rhodes did leave quite a few ends dangling at the end of this books so that is a little frustrating but I know that the next book is out and I am sure it will tie a few of those threads up.

First, I would like to thank the author for giving me this book for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book. It is definitely for adults, though. The first half of the book had me laughing out loud a lot. As the story got more serious, the humor kind of went away, but was still a great story filled with smiles, action and romance.

Grace has avoided crowds, and people, forever because she can feel people emotions and gets big headaches from the fuzzy noises it causes in her head. One night while out with a friend at a club, things change for her. This is when she founds out demons are real, and is rescued and taken home by the fun twins Dov and Col. She has never felt at home anywhere, but at their house she finally feels at home. Here is where she finds out about herself and finally meets her destiny. And here is where we meet Canann. He is the Liege Lord, and runs the House of Guardians and protects humans from the demon threat. You will fall in love with Canaan, and may even find yourself fanning and swooning. The household has many great characters that make this book quite enjoyable and fun. And I would love more story for Col, Dov, Nardo, and Nico.

I loved the love story of Grace and Canaan! It was fun how it began with her cooking in the kitchen, and him not being able to stop watching her. And the bonding and mating that takes place is sexy and romantic, and beautiful. My only complaint is that Grace never got to kick Callista's butt!

This story has a lot of romance and detailed bedroom scenes, so I recommend for adults only.

I bought the Paperback from the Author at the IRC convention 2015. How did I not know the great works by Jacqueline Rhoades before now! I was so entertained by this book. It has all of the points I look for in a great read. Lots of action & adventure. A heroine that is strong & Kicks Ass when needed. A Hero that is Hot & Sexy. He also knows when to keep the peace with his woman. LOL. There were times I Laughed out loud. I even cried a bit. Love the concept of Demon fighters. This is my first read from Jackie. It will not be my last. Now I MUST get the rest of this Series & find out what happens to the other Guardian's. If you have not yet read this Author, I highly recommend you get this book & start reading today. I carried this book with me everywhere. It is now a little dog eared. I usually try to take better care of my autographed books. But it was so good I just took it anyway. What are you waiting for got get your copy now!!! From a new Fan & a true Fan... Pam James.

A compelling mix between the Black Dagger Brotherhood and The Midnight Breed series Guardian's Grace reminded me WHY I love paranormal romance. Lately it seems like I've been wading in a pool of mediocre vampire books, then low and behold my diamond in the rough appears.

Guardian's Grace has it all! Great characters, action, humor, depth, and a fantastic romance.

I don't have a doubt in my mind that the Guardian's of the Race series will become an instant hit in the world of Paranormal Romance.

Read it and spread the word to your friends!

It took me a little while to get into this book. Probably because the H/h did not meet quickly. Anyway, it was a fun book. The twins were like loveable puppies. Puppies who could turn into killers if needed.

Amusing, light diversion. Expect plot holes big enough to drive a VW Bug through, a bit of MarySue-ism and some just plain retarded-ness, but good for all that, will read the rest.

This book blew me away and was honestly a breath of fresh air. Finally, a book that wasn't filled with characters so in heartbreak or whatever that they failed to tell the truth to people or hide all of their emotions because they were so afraid or whatever. This book has excitement, romance, a little horror and a whole lot of greatness. The characters are written perfectly and the author is able to capture emotions so beautifully Most books I have read lately have the characters running around and avoiding love and emotion however, this book is nothing like that. The characters are able to feel and express his or her emotions in a way that you don't get to see in books very much. Instead of running away from them or not even telling the person until about 12 books in the characters come out and say what they are feeling and don't hide them away. It was so refreshing.

This book is filled with witches, vampires, demons and angel like people (the guardians) which is where this story starts. Grace has been shuffled around from foster home to foster home until she was 18 and then she was on her own. In between foster homes she meets her best friend Alice. When Grace was little she started having problems with a buzzing noise in her head. She soon realized it was hard to be around people because she was able to feel their emotions and that was what was making her head buzz. If she was around a lot of people for too long the buzzing in her head would become to great and she would develop a migraine. So, she pretty much shut herself off from the rest of the world. She didn't go out much and had a job where she didn't have to be around people. Everything changed after she went out with her best friend to a club and watched as a demon tried to kill her best friend and then she met the twins. That is when her whole life changed.

The beginning of this book had me laughing out loud because of some of the things that the twins would say. They might be 20 something but they seriously act like they are 12 so almost everything that comes out of their mouths is just funny. When the book started getting more serious there were less funny moments but then again the book can't be full of funny moments. When the book changes you can tell through the tone of the book and how it changes but it was seamless and you just moved right a long with it. Even though the book takes on a more serious ton about mid way it is still an amazing book and it had me in it's spell the first moment I started reading. The characters are really what make this book and the way the author writes them. You start really falling for the characters because they are written in such a way that there isn't really a way not to love them. You even start feeling for a few of the bad characters. I know I did. One of the characters, Andi, I couldn't help but to feel for her and I completely understood what made her do the things that she did. The characters are relatable on a certain level that really draws you deeper into the book.

I do have to mention that this book is an adult book because there is a little sex included. However, it's nothing compared to Fifty Shades of Grey or other books of that nature. I would say that the stuff going on in this book is done very tasteful and it's not full of it. Just enough to tell the story and not overly done that it just becomes repetitive or put in just to put in a sex scene.

All in all this book was awesome and I even had my doubts before reading it. I wasn't sure if I would like it or not. It turned out to become one of my favorite books and I really do love it. I can't wait to read more from Jacqueline Rhoades in the future.

Note: Book provided by author for review.

This was a great book. Paranormal romance with humour, wit and action all rolled into one fun package. The cover is simple but meaningful and before I read the book I wondered what the skull in the background was about. Now I know!

I found the heroine quirky and confident. She was a beautifully crafted character whose interactions with others in the House were the highlight of the book for me. This entire novel was filled with colourful characters filling in a strong supporting House. That was also part of the problem - the one drawback in this book for me was the I did not feel as connected to the hero as I would have liked. He was not super alpha, which is ok with me, but his interactions with the heroine and with the rest of the House were very vanilla to me. He was in touch with himself and his feelings were easy for him to speak aloud which was a refreshing change from some romance novels. We only saw him in action once (in terms of battle) and he was just not as memorable as the other characters in the book. I must say I loved all of the characters that lived in the House but while the heroine stood out within the house the hero seemed merely a part of it. I still really liked his character and he was appealing but I suppose I was hoping for more from him.

The battle scenes were detailed and active and the cut scenes of the demon's side of the novel were brief but informative. There was enough to keep the reader interested and engaged but not enough to ruin the flow of the novel.

Overall, this novel was a refreshing find and a definite change from the dark and gritty I've been reading.

Received a free copy of this book for an honest review. Honestly it is the best written and with the most well developed characters in a book I have received for review. I love this new world that Ms. Rhoades has created. There was a little bit of everything in this book; steamy hot romance, humor, drama, and plenty of action. I totally fell for Grace and Canaan as well as the rest of the crew who inhabit the house. I couldn't wait to see what happens next, so I bought the next two in the series before I finished this one. They are a steal for the price listed on Barnes and Nobel for a book this well written and with a great plot. There were a couple of spots in the very beginning where you would jump from one character's head to another's and it took you a minute to figure it out, but that isn't such a big deal and gets better as the story develops. To me most new series and authors take a bit to get used to is all. Loved the book, thank you for the opportunity to read and review. To others I suggest give it a try, especially if you like J.R. Ward, Kenyon, Alexandra Ivy, Lara Adrian or Laura Wright

The story is full of humor, love, sexy scenes, drama and action. Everything I love about paranormal is included in this story. A female character that gets stronger as the story moves along. A new race of heroes (Paenitentia) protecting humans from demons. Sexy, strong heroes, whom learn to adapt to the new addition to their house.

I enjoyed reading this book so much I can't wait to read the next two installments of the series.

So I received this book for free through my Goodreads.com group called Lovers of Paranormal. The author requested that we read it and post a review on it.

I loved it. The characters were fantastic! A couple of macho muscle bound twins who you just can't wait to see what they'll do next who remind you of five year olds. A female character that's as jumbled up as the rest of us or more but doesn't leave you with that feeling you get from most female character as a simpering weak female who can't wait to be swept off her feet. She is instead is instead dynamic in her development through the story. And lets face it a guy that is drool worthy but requires a good smack up the side of the head sometimes...and gets it..sort of.

I think you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

Great start to a series!! Guardian's Grace was full of action, romance and alot of laughter. I loved the characters most of all the twins! Grace was amazing in her mother hen way! Cannan well I would love to bring him home!

It did give me a fell for the BDB, but is very different!! I found some confusing moments in the book, where the author would skip from one person to the next without warning and skip weeks or days without reason! But it didnt happen all to often!

All in all I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone! I am looking forward to the next book in this series!

Books like this are why I love the paranormal! Vampires and witches and demons oh my! Guardian's Grace shows a new twist on the vampire legend and I could not put it down. It has action, danger, love and humor. The twins are hilarious, Otto is sweet and charming, Grace is strong and protective and Cannon is fierce and stubborn but can still be brought to his knees by his woman. This was the first book I read from this author and I can't wait to read the rest of her work! Fans of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series will love this series!

Jacqueline Rhoades is a delightful new inspirational voice to the world of paranormal romance. Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. The imagination and energy of the characters infused the vitality of the Guardian’s series. Readers will be drawn in with the star struck action, humorous dialogue, and the luscious tale of danger and romance.

Grace Masters always dreamed of a family she could call her own and always knew that for her, those dreams would never come true. Yet here she is, in an old Victorian home, living and loving under the cover of night. Who knew the source of her lifelong torment was really her gift as a Daughter of Man or that this gift could be controlled and used for something good? Who knew there was another race called the Paenitentia who live side by side with humans? Who knew that demons were real?
Grace certainly didn't until one fateful night when her world falls apart and comes together again in a place where she finally belongs.
But fall he does, with a mixture of comedy, drama and tantalizing sex that will touch your heart.

I read this book several years ago but the series is so good that I am re-reading the series in anticipation of reading book #5. Grace is a woman who feels emotions of other people in her head. It causes her to have severe headaches and some anxiety, so as a consequence she avoids people, even working in jobs that allow her to work alone. Her one friend drags her to a bar and there Grace notices two very hot twin men. But her friend cannot see them. Grace's friend is attacked by something that is not human, and Grace is taken by the twins to a safe haven. The safe haven is owned by Caanon, a huge, gruff not quite human man who is leader of his house of Guardians. The Guardians protect the human race from demons. But the Guardians are not human, and Caanon and his house of Guardians are being threatened by Caanon's own people. And what is Grace? She does not appear to be quite human herself, and Caanon's people do not want her in his house. Great concept and storyline. And a great romance!!! I loved the characters in this book. Grace has a backbone and tells the huge scary men what to do. The twins are fun and polar opposites, one being playful and one being serious (somewhat), Caanon is a sticker for tradition, and you have other people with tragic pasts (scarred emotionally and physically). This book is a page turner!

She did it again

I have definitely found my go to author. No matter what I am in the mood for wether it be shifters or witches or vampires her books cover them all. Every book I have read of hers has left me wanting more. Each book is unique, and combined with the perfect balance of romance, humor, and action. And her characters are so wonderful and relatable that you want to meet them. The way she create even the smallest characters to shine is a wonderful quality, especially when she does it in a way that is never long winded but extremely descriptive that is true talent a nd a gift. I would recommend any of her books or series to anyone who likes romance. Even if you aren't a fan of paranormal romance, after reading one of her books you will be. Just make sure you can finish the book before bed time cause you won't want to put it down until you get to the last word.

I was given a free copy of the book from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

First of all I have to say I was surprised by how well written this book is. Normally there is a lot to pick on when it comes to "read and review"-books. This one? Not so much.

The characters are well developed, and the storyline itself is smooth and flowing. I really liked this book!

The authors way of describing the characters make you feel you really get to know them, and the book has a wide range of likeable characters, along side some not so likeable.

This book has it all: Interesting characters, a good story, romance. A definite "should read".

Ok so I passed this book up so many times that its not even funny. Thought about it, decided not to buy it and passed on it again......

Well I FINALLY decided what the hay and tried this new author (for me anyway).....

OH MY! Im mad I didn't get it sooner! This book was a very awesome surprise especially when I wasn't expecting much. I love the book and promptly went and purchased the next in the series.

It has love, action, humor, hot men, a great leading lady and more.

I really hope JR lets all Guardians get there time to shine in the spotlight! I can't decide who I love more but Dov and Col are funnnnnny!

What I love about these types of books are indepth description of everything that transport you into there world.

I love the markings of the guardians and the mating ceremony are breath taking.

Grace had always struggled with the buzzing in her head until the day her friend was taken by a demon and she meet the twins (guardians in training) they took her home and that's where the story of Grace & Canaan begin

Loved it

A fantastic novel. Exciting storyline of a secret race next to humans, helping them even if they don't know it. Lots of great action and fights with the demons. This book has great characters! Lots of wonderful romance, danger and even humor. A whole houseful of hunks to love! Can't wait for more!

Good story line good sex scenes, there were a few things i didnt like such as the flow of the relationship between the two main characters, it was really fast and i didnt feel/see a lot of get to know/fall in love it was like instant love and it was weird. but after that the relationship flowed pretty well, all in all not a bad book, but still not sure if i will go to the next one?..?
