Double Desire

Rate this book
What happens on vacation stays on vacation… until you go on vacation again.

Last fall, my husband and I hooked up with our best friends while we were on vacation… and it was all kinds of hot. Since then, things have returned to normal—except for those times I find myself thinking about Bex in a more-than-friends manner, or when Alec brings up Rafael in bed.

So when they invite us on vacation again, Alec and I are both eager to go. But saying yes brings up a host of questions: What does it mean for our marriage if we’re sleeping with Bex and Rafael? What if I start catching feelings for my best friend? What if Alec and Rafael's feelings become more than platonic?

And what in the world will our new normal look like when we get home this time?

Double Desire is a high heat, bi romance that explores intimacy, friendship, relationships, and how the three can mix into a hot (but sometimes confusing) concoction. The second in a four-book series, this book ends with each married couple happily together, but with no happily ever foursome (yet…)

Gemma Blythe writes stories about love and relationships: the good, the messy, and the honest. Her love of romance blossomed in high school when unrequited crushes led her to seek happily ever afters in books and movies.

Though Gemma’s stories are fiction, she’s inspired by the partner she eventually found her own happily ever after with. When Gemma isn’t writing, you can find her lost in the pages of a book, cooking up a storm in the kitchen, attempting to interpret her Tarot spread, and trying to convince her friends and family that she would definitely win Survivor. (She would definitely not win Survivor.)

Glad to be back with this foursome! Picking up six months after Breaking Boundaries, Darcy and Alec are invited along for another weekend getaway, this time in honor of Bex and Rafe’s 16th wedding anniversary. Whereas their first time together evolved out of auditory voyeurism, this time it’s intentional. Things are getting real. They all get STI tests and talk about whether they’re exclusive. They’re working on communication, dealing with jealousy, and what the other person brings out in your partner. And of course there’s loads of hot sex.

The first half is from Darcy’s POV while they’re on the trip. Part 2 kicks off with Rafe’s POV and then we also get Darcy and Bex’s POVs, taking us from July to January with another couple trip on the near horizon. This had a slower pace, maybe to account for the ways each character is making sense of deepening connections and how their friendships are possibly spilling into something more while also navigating their personal lives and not necessarily wanting their sexual exploits to become known in their community. I’m very invested in seeing where things go from here!

I have to make peace with the fact that this is still light on characterization and unlikely to change at this point. However, the fact that Rafe’s race or ethnicity is still a mystery isn’t good rep, especially since we got chapters from his perspective this time around.

Characters: Darcy is a 39 year old bisexual white PTA president. Alec is a 43 year old bisexual white amateur photographer. They’ve been married 13 years and have 3 kids (sons in 2nd and 5th grade and a daughter in 4th grade). Bex is a 39 year old bisexual wife and mother. Rafe is a 38 year old bisexual husband and father; he is possibly Latino. They’ve been married for 16 years and have 3 kids (sons in 1st and 5th grade and a daughter in 3rd grade). Darcy and Bex were freshman year roommates. This is set in Hill Country, TX.

Content notes: on page sex, foursome, sex club, exhibitionism/voyeurism, sensation play, blindfold, road head, 69, rimming, anal play, outdoor sex, spanking, edging, sexting, erotic photos, sex toys, masturbation, alcohol, penetrative sex is the only “real” sex, ableist language

I had a BLAST following this series as it developed on Kindle Vella each week and am thrilled others now can read if in book form.

Double Desire has all of the steam and the emotions as in book one but at a higher intensity. Gemma's writing of spicy scenes is one told with heart and care for those are discovering what their sexuality truly is.

Spicy book lovers will want to pick this up when it drops in the end of January and check out the journey on Kindle Vella!

Deeply loving this foursome. The way that Gemma balances spice with deep emotion is beautiful. I love the way that their relationships are progressing within these books. I’m not always a fan of multiple books for the same couple/set of partners, but I think the structure is brilliant and honest and works so well for Bex/Rafe/Darcy/Alec. I am so excited to see how Gemma continues to develop their story. This is one of the most beautiful poly romances I’ve ever read, truly.

I don't normally love reading an ongoing connected series unless the entire series is out but I read the first book in the Fourplay series and immediately knew I couldn't wait to delve into book 2. I love the uniqueness of the premise, these 2 happily married couples exploring polyamory alongside their spouses. There's a lot of sex but also a lot of intimacy that goes way beyond the physical. I love getting these looks into the progression of their relationship, sexual and emotional. Also, love that each book focuses on the POV of a different character in the foursome. We've gotten Bex and Darcy. I assume next up will be Alec or Rafe. Excited to see where the next book takes them.

I can't recommend this series enough. The first book on the series was sooo good, but this one is even better.
This book is so hot 🥵🥵🥵 but also deep and sweet, I love the communication and consent between the foursome and I'm really excited for the next books in the series.

The first book was in Bex pov and this one on Darcy's, I hope (and suppose) that the next two books in the series will be in Rafe and Alec's povs, respectively.

Thanks to the author for the free eArc.

Wow. The first book was good, great, even. But this second book. It blew me away. Just WOW. From the unrelenting amount of spice (ugh, soooo much but each scene served a purpose, nothing superfluous here) and sexual exploration to the honest communication and valid feelings, Double Desire doubled down and Gemma Blythe delivered. I still cannot get over how real this book felt.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not in a poly relationship by any means. But I don't think you have to be to understand the feelings the four characters have regarding themselves, their feelings toward someone they are not married to, and for their marriage. Gemma did a great job giving us real feelings, helping the characters identify those feelings, and then (!!) working through those feelings with their partner. Which leads me to the other strength in this book--the communication. If you liked communication in your books, this one is for you. And while I'm usually indifferent to it because I'm heartless and problematic, the way the couples talked with their partners and to one another felt very realistic as well as INCREDIBLY sensitive and respectful. No one forced their partner to open up or to talk. Instead they all said, when you are ready, I'm here. I loved the openness and understanding they all had with one another. We could all take note when dealing with others, especially when dealing with something of this magnitude.

And yes, the scenes are sweat inducing so please stay hydrated.

Looking forward to the next two books and to see how they continue to grow individually and together.

What better way to celebrate another year of wedded bliss than with your best friends.

Bex (FMC): wife, mother, bisexual, college roommate with Darcy and still besties

Rafe (MMC): husband, father, dirty talker, bisexual but still grappling with his sexuality

Darcy (FMC): wife, mother, PTA president, bisexual, college roommate to Bex and still best friends, loud (😉)

Alec (MMC): husband, father, bisexual, amateur photographer

Book 2 picks up 6 months after where book 1 left off. Bex and Raf had such great time with their best friends, Darcy and Alec, that they invited them to join them on their anniversary trip. This book is told primarily from Darcy's POV, though we get some Raf and Alec chapters towards the end.

While book 1 focused on sexual awaking, book 2 dives into the deepening connections and navigating their new friends with benefits relationship. Gemma wrote a beautiful and steamy novella about true intimacy and relationships. The physical relationships between the characters balances so well with the romantic relationships. While the spice is definitely one-handed-read worthy, the healthy communication and the love between the characters is exceptional. The author did a fantastic job setting up the next book. I look forward to seeing where the foursome relationship goes from here in book 3.

In part two of this four-part series, we see our two main couples--Bex and Rafe, and Darcy and Alex--reconnect on a couples' vacation one year after the events of the first book. Rekindling their intimacy, the couples debate whether this is something they can do more often, whether it's merely friends-with-benefits or more feelings, and whether they're interested in alternative swaps...

The story of our foursome is artfully dissected into four parts in a way that is both cruel to keep us waiting for more and excellent at building anticipation for the culmination of this set. Like the first book, it's off-the-charts steamy and explores polyamory and same-sex exploration in a respectful way. We get significant amounts of relationship development, making the emotional and physical aspects well-developed, but we know very little about our main characters aside from the capacity for love and sex. It would be interesting to spend a tiny bit more time on their lives outside of their romantic relationship--their kids, their job. Not a lot--I don't need a whole subplot--just a tiny bit more. The book veers on the novella-length, so there would have been plenty of room to expand. Alternatively, I wonder whether making the four parts into a duet would have been slightly better, but I look forward to reading the next two installments, regardless.

Thanks to the author for my eARC! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Checking back in with Darcy, Bex, Alec, and Rafael was a wonderful dip back into their world and their steamy exploration because while what happens on vacation stays on vacation only works if it's a one time thing.

Just like the last book, I love that these characters are older in life, with kids, and that it's steeped in that good communication and being aware of your partner's needs and comforts not just your own so that you don't blindly blow up your marriage when deciding to play with another couple.

It was a fun steamy weekend away for Bex and Rafael's anniversary this time, and they knowingly invited Darcy and Alec on the getaway knowing full well and to a point planning that it would be them sharing again. Which meant this time planning a little but also the pull and push of what does this mean, how does this work if it's not a one time thing like they said it would be.

I love the relationship growth not just between the couples but between all four of them. I also liked that we didn't just end with them going home and it being weird or unsure. That we had that part two of short little check-ins through the different characters to show the evolution of them accepting that this isn't just a one time thing or that it's going to ruin their friendship but it's what they all want - that they just need to work out a balance.

Definitely interested to see where Gemma takes the couples once book three gets released.

I enjoyed Breaking Boundaries so much that I had to read the next one Double Desire in the Fourplay series!

This novella immediately starts out getting super hot. This book you get to see even more of the couples being alone and enjoying one another's company. The group of best friends goes on another trip and the fun happens as soon as they get there.

There is a lot of exploration of what this means for the relationship as a whole. There are several parts to this book and it does mean that the couples are trying to navigate falling for one another and this new world of polyamorous relationships. They all are so tender and respectful of one another while also making sure they are having the challenging conversations.

The book ends with us waiting to see how it will all continue, and I'm ready for the next book in the series now! This one pubs 1/26 so you have time to catch up with the first in the series.

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Having read Book 1, I was excited to receive this book as an ARC. This is my honest review.

While I think you could get away with diving straight into book 2 in terms of storyline, I think you would lose a great deal of emotional build up so I highly recommend starting with Breaking Boundaries.

I was completely on board with this book being from Darcy’s perspective, whereas book 1 is from Bex’ POV. I was concerned with the switch to multiple POV in part 2 of Double Desire but it was done SO well.

The attention to emotion in this book, as an extension of exploring this type of sexual/emotional relationship is vital. The conversations feel so authentic. I could imagine myself having these with my own husband. I loved the research that some did, as well, and I think this adds a layer of information for the reader that they may not have or know how to access.

I can’t wait to see where these characters end up. While they are working on their connections, I feel so connected to them and their explorations as well. Bravo. 😘

I ended up reading the first book in like two days and this one was even better than the first.

This one definitely has more plot to it and is more spicy than the first. I personally love the shift of perspectives in this book. The first was all from Bex POV so I love we get to look through the other threes eyes at times. I love how non-monogamy is portrayed in these books but this one especially, even including some education and resources (like the mention of two poly specific books known in the community) and watching the characters grow and develop feelings has been a blast. I am thrilled this series isn’t over yet. I can’t wait.

Though one more thing I will add is a HUGE shout out to the author for the dedication alone. I don’t identify as bisexual but I do identify as pansexual and the little “may we all remember we count” really tugged my heart and made me feel seen. So thank you.

Read it. It’s worth it.

Double Desire is the perfect compliment to Breaking Boundaries. Seamlessly picking up from where we were last found these couples exploring their boundaries in depth while on vacation.

In this book, there is more internal conflict and trying to come to terms with potential complications. The foursome is caught between burred boundaries of platonic friendship outside of their respective marriages and stronger feelings toward their friends. It is more self-reflective and feels deeper than Breaking Boundaries did.

Gemma Blythe has done it again - creating an incredibly erotic story that had me panting and unable to put the book down. It fell in line with Breaking Boundaries while not being overly repetitive. Gemma has continued to add substance to the Fourplay series, giving the characters new emotions, new scenes and so. much. spice!

Cannot wait for more!

I love Spicy books, and this book definitely hits the spice score high!

I’ll be perfectly honest, I didn’t think foursomes were really going to be ‘my thing’ however I’m very much so a ‘don’t knock a book til you read it’ and I’m very happy I did.

The fact that Gemma Blythe puts such a heavy emphasis on the communication aspects and the characters being vulnerable. Working through self doubt. Which made it a very heartwarming read.

For any who enjoy spicy books, but wonder if this book is up your Alley or not? I absolutely recommend taking a chance on it, and I can guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised.

Another hit from Gemma Blythe! This foursome is still as hot as they were in the first book. This book picks up six months after the last vacation. Things have gotten back to normal for the couples until Bex invites Alec and Darcy along on their anniversary vacation with intentional plans to hookup again. Things take a more complicated turn this go around as more and more feelings are developing between the couples. I don't know if Gemma lives this lifestyle or not, but her voice and her approach to this just feels so real and authentic. Again, the spice was SPICIN' and the feels were feelin'! I absolutely loved it and I am DYING to get more from these four!

Double Desire is my first foray in Non-Ethical Monogomay or Polyamory in Books. Overall, I enjoyed the ins and outs as these couples navigate how to enjoy each other while still maintaining a regular life and coming to terms with their potential feelings and pushing personal boundaries. It does read like a second, continuing book, so I recommend reading the first book in the series so as not to do yourself a disservice.

The thing I liked most was that it was relatable. The characters react as real people would. And it was enjoyable.

This book is such a bright star in erotic romance. It’s definitely erotic romance and boundary pushing but it’s also so wholesome at the same time. I’d say it’s 70% super hot sex between two married m/f couples and 30% of the most heartfelt and realistic conversations about wants, consent, marriage, sexuality, friendship, and love. It’s so clear that the author put a lot of thought and research into her writing.

In the first book, Bex, Rafael, Alec, and Darcy dip their toe into their secret friend crushes. In this book, we see them go into the situation with intention instead of the strictly experimental “haha what if but actually…👀” that we got from the first book. The heat is turned up and so are the feelings and we’re left with some lofty promises for the rest of the series.

Thank you to the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I’ve already recommended it to anyone who’s mentioned a mild interest in polyamory or poly romance.

Gemma Blythe does it again!!! Double Desire continues the steamy set up in Breaking Boundaries, but takes the couples into the next step of thinking about... FEELINGS! This is all so well done, from the hot sex to the nervousness to the amazing communication. Gemma Blythe continues to set a high high bar for erotic romance, and I'm just happy to be along for the ride.

This is Book 2 in the series, it makes the most sense to read Book 1 first.

We follow Darcy's perspective more in this book. This book has more sexual exploring some really racy scenes. If you are looking for spice in your book, you will love this one. If you are open to sexual exploration, this will be a good book for you.

So while spicy AF this also had such an amazing story and character build and health relationships to show the growth of the relationship and the maturity that is required! Gosh it was hot though too like spicy and varied and makes you need the next book right away. Downside only 2/4 books are done but upside there are 2 books to come!

I want to thank Gemma and Book Sirens for providing me with an ARC of Double Desire. This is book 2 following Breaking Boundaries.

This follows Alec and Darcy's POV as they navigate their relationship with Bex and Rafe. After their vacation in book 1, feelings continue to linger. The emotions Gemma puts in her books is incredible. The chemistry is out of this world!

You'll like this if you like:

- Communication (the best I have read in any book)
- Best friends to lovers
- Fire play
- Sexy photographs/messages
It's out NOW! Be sure to buy if you think these fall into your liking! Thank you again Gemma and Book Sirens this was such a phenomenal book with writing out of this world.
