Ten years ago, a biological weapon was detonated in Washington D.C. killing 99.9% of the United States population. The survivors of the fallout live in the town of New Hope, protected by a corrupt government, from the victims that didn’t die…the infected.
Today is the day that Samantha Albright will learn that all of this is a lie.
Matthew Cronan's love affair with writing developed during high school and the two have been happily involved since. His influences include Chuck Palahniuk, Stephen King, and Douglas Adams. He spends his days being a hospitality superhero and moonlights at night writing about them. He resides in Nashville, Tennessee with his amazing wife Lane, beautiful daughter Geneva Rose, and rescue-pup Sam.
I really enjoyed this book. This was a very interesting story and the descriptions were well written. I liked the main character, the choices that she made, the twists and turns the book took and the ending was amazing - shocking and just plain wow. Incredible. Definitely one I would suggest others to read. :)
I was given a copy of this book for free in return for an HONEST review.
There's nothing new in this, except for some of the grammar. It's tagged as a dystopic, post-apocalyptic, horror, thriller. There's no horror, no thrill, and the apocalypse may have all been a lie. As for the dystopic elements, it's all been done before and better.
It's not even a believable dystopia. No contact is allowed between men and women unless they are willing to marry and produce children. How do you expect that to happen? And two children? You do realize that's below replacement, right? Even if you can get far more people to marry than you obviously are...
The Infected is a post-apocalyptic dystopian set 10 years after a zombie apocalypse has obliterated most of mankind. The sole survivors of the event live together behind big thick walls, kept shielded from the outside world (for "safety" reasons) in the town of New Hope.
The Infected tells the story of Sam, a girl whose been trapped/ living in New Hope since being rescued from her burning down city 10 years prior. Her disdain for the ruling class of New Hope grows bigger each day and dangerous thoughts of rebellion start to cloud her judgement. After Sam becomes caught up in an unfortunate situation with the Mayor of New Hope, Sam is forced to face her biggest fear....life outside the walls.
What I liked about The Infected is that it's an incredibly fast paced story yet, still full of the world building and character development you'd expect to see in a full length novel. I was glued into this story from the very first page and could see clearly this horrible new world Sam has been forced to live in all these years.
Now on the other hand, I do think this story was lacking in some aspects. While I loved Sam, I was sick of the Author describing her as having fire in her belly every single time Sam started to worry or felt odd. The phrase was so overused it became irritating.
My other big issue with The Infected is the ending. It just sort of peters out. No real closure, no hints at what is to come, most of all very few actual Infected. This is a Zombie book, it should've had some you know Zombies in it. We go from an exciting chase out of New Hope to nothing. It was deeply unsatisfying and brought down the entire rating of the book for me.
Final Thoughts In the end, despite the stories few faults I really enjoyed this Novella. The writing was great, the world building excellent and I really loved the main character Sam. With that being said, I'll be rating The Infected by Matthew Cronan ★★★★.
*Copy won from Goodreads. All opinions are my own and I was not compensated in an which way for providing them.
A relatively short story (50 pages) about a dystopian society carved out of a zombie apocalypse. There is plenty of action but if you’re looking for Zombie action you’ll have to wait as the story takes place solely in the city walls. The infected is the first in a series, and unfortunately it isn’t really give a full story. To get the complete picture you’ll need to keep reading the series (this brings it down a star in my mind I like stories which can be part of series but can also stand alone). The infected is interesting and well written.
This book is as suspenseful as humanly possible. It's short, not at all sweet, and the author seems to savor the discomfort his readers will feel. But let me say straigt out that it's a GOOD kind of discomfort. This type of story SHOULD have you squirming as you turn the pages. Cronan makes us care about his characters and what happens to them. His heroes are noble, his villains are evil and that's how it should be. Read this. Now.
I read this book and the second one together, in one sitting. Since this first novella is so short, it is almost just an introduction to the main character and the background for everything, but it is still very fast-paced and the author packs a lot of action in to each page. The main character, Sam, is well-developed and continues her development much further as she enters the second book to make her into a very cool badass.
I love, love, love this book. It's a post-apocalyptic book set 10 years after a virus kills all of mankind. The Heroine, Sam, paints an amazing picture of life after the infection. Cole Porter was my favorite character because he reminded me of my dad. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a new dystopian/PA. It's a short read, but a great read.
This book is AWESOME!!! It's the closest thing to Hunger Games that I've read. My only complaint is the length. I'm hoping that this is the first in the series because I AM HOOKED!!!
