Dharmaraja - The story follows the novel with the return of Thripura Sunadari Kunjamma, the sister of Thevan Vikaraman Kazhakkoottathu Pilla and her granddaughter Meenakshi to Travancore and subsequent situations in which Kesava Pilla (young Kesavadas) gets involved with the proceedings of Chandrakaran, the son of Ramanamadathil Pilla and the emergence of Haripanchanan as the antagonist, who is later revealed by Ananthapadmanabhan to be one among the twins of Thripura Sunadari Kunjamma, Ugran, who plan to topple the kingdom.

പത്താം ക്ലാസ്സിലെ മലയാളം ഉപപാഠപുസ്തകം ആയാണ് ഇതു ഞാൻ ആദ്യം വായിയ്ക്കുന്നത്. 19 -ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ മലയാളത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകതകളും തെക്കൻ തിരുവിതാംകൂർ ഭാഷയും കുറെ തമിഴ് പ്രയോഗങ്ങളും ചേർത്ത് ഇതൊരിയ്ക്കലും വായിച്ചു മുഴുമിപ്പിയ്ക്കാൻ പോകുന്നില്ല എന്ന പ്രതീതി ജനിപ്പിച്ചു ആദ്യം. പതിയെ പതിയെ അതിന്റെ ഒരു താളത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് ഇഴുകിചെർന്നപ്പോൾ വായന ഒരു അനുഭവം ആയി. പതിനഞ്ചു വയസ്സുപ്രായത്തിൽ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടാൻ പറ്റിയ ഒരു മെലോഡ്രാമാറ്റിക് പ്രണയകഥയും സാഹിത്യ വർണ്ണനകളും അതിനെ കൂടുതൽ ആസ്വാദ്യകരമാക്കി. പതിയെ സസ്പെൻസിന്റേതായ ഒരു കഥാതന്തു വന്നതോടെ താല്പര്യം വളരെ ഇരട്ടിച്ചു. 100 കൊല്ലം മുൻപ് എഴുതപ്പെട്ട ഒരു പുസ്തകത്തിനു ചേർന്ന മനോഹരമായ ഒരു അവസാനം പുസ്തകത്തെ കൌമാരകാലത്തെ എന്റെ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട പുസ്തകങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാക്കി മാറ്റി. ഇതു വായിച്ചു സി.വി.യുടെ ഒരു ആരാധകനായി പിന്നെ മാർത്താണ്ഡവർമയും രാമരാജബഹദൂറും തെരഞ്ഞു പിടിച്ചുവായിയ്ക്കുകയായിരുന്നു എന്നാണെന്റെ ഓർമ. ഇപ്പോൾ വായിച്ചാൽ ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിനു ഇങ്ങനത്തെ ഒരു റേറ്റിങ് കൊടുക്കുമോ എന്നുള്ളത് വേറെ ഒരു ചോദ്യം.

Dharmaraja by CV Raman Pillai is one of the famous historical novels of Malayalam literature. This was conceptualized as the first part of a trilogy based on the life of raja Keshavadas the 18th century Diwan of Travancore. GS Iyer (a former diplomat) has done a good job as translator of this book. I will read Ramaraja Bahadur the second book of this trilogy next. ( the third was begun by the author and he completed few chapters before his demise). I strongly recommend this book to those of you who like historical fiction :)

An awesome Travancore political thriller .

Dharmaraja is one of the classics of Malayalam literature, originally published in 1913. Set in eighteenth century Travancore, and revolving around an imaginary conspiracy to overthrow the rule of Maharaja Ramavarma, who was known as Dharmaraja, this formed a part of the trilogy of historical novels written by C V Raman Pillai based on the life of Raja Kesavadas, the eighteenth century dewan of Travancore. The first one was Marthandavarma, while this was the second.

Centered around a fascinating premise, this one just did not do it for me. It was a chore to get through the book, though I did complete it. C V Raman Pillai was an important figure in the Malayalam literary firmament, and his novel Marthandavarma was one of the first novels published in the language. This one, revolving around the time of that ruler’s successor, Maharaja Ramavarma, who was known as 'Dharmaraja' on account of his benevolent and wise rule, details the fictional uprising planned by the yogi Haripanchanam, a scion of one of the houses of the Eight Pillais, feudal chieftains who were destroyed by Marthandavarma.

This could be something to do with the translation into English which may have robbed the original of a lot of its essence, but I found it tough to follow the various characters and their motivations. The prose was clunky and detached and made it tough for me to feel or identify with any of the characters. Definitely an interesting premise, I would suggest to give this one a shot, at least on account of its historical significance. However, beyond that, for me it did not leave any kind of mark.

Archaic malayalam at its best.

One of the few historic novels in malayalam. The well thought out scenes mingle effortlessly creating a cascading effect. Beautiful narration
