I thought the book was a great read, I loved reading about memories of schools and how things once were. It was a wonderful trip down memory lane and many, I am sure, will find the trip thought-provoking as each of you remembers things. Some of these memories may not always be good ones, but the situations of our yesteryear helped to shape the people we are today.
I enjoyed the poetic writing style of each of the verses and the accompanying pictures added a wonderful nostalgic flavour to the whole experience. Many of the pictures shared are reminiscent of yester-year and you find yourself using them as eye-candy after you read each of the verses.
The prose is rich with school and memories as you are taken to the dreaded Dodge Ball games that were infamous of schools past as an example. Watching that red ball being launched while your gym teacher smiled sadistically from the sidelines is one memory you will be drawn to.
What other book can I be reading, and suddenly see a picture of a football player from New Albany, IN?? I mean! I liked this book for two reasons: the poetry, mostly written from the points of view of school children, and the photos. I hear Brewer combed through photo archives to find just the right ones for this book.
All of them are from the era just before I started school, it seems, but I can still smell that combination of sawdust and chemicals the custodians used to scrub the wooden floors every day. I could feel the creak of those floors.
Crossing guards, new kids, the school nurse, the custodian, the scary principal (wish I could share that one with my dad), and always kids...on the school bus, trying to navigate their way through school and life.
