Twenty year old Emma hasn’t left the house since she was attacked as a child. Now, with the impending release of her attacker from prison, Emma knows it’s more important than ever for her to regain control of her life. From her unrelenting nightmares, to her strained relationships, to her crippling agoraphobia, Emma feels as though her life is spiraling out of control.
When her professor, Simon Anderson enters her life, Emma must deal with feelings she has never experienced before.
Though both she and Simon know their relationship is bordering on inappropriate, neither of them are able to ignore the intense chemistry that is quickly developing between them.
What was supposed to keep her mind off the attack has left her more confused than ever. When there are so many reasons why you shouldn’t be together, is simply being in love really enough?
Missy lives in a small town in Central Victoria with her husband, and her confused pets (a dog who think she's a cat, a cat who thinks he's a dog...you get the picture).
When she's not writing, she can usually be found looking for something to read.
Emma is stuck in the past, dealing with the aftermath of a devastating attack from her childhood. She has not left her house willingly in the ten years subsequent to the attack and has continuing nightmares. Taking classes online, Emma finds an unlikely friend in one of her professors.
Simon is significantly older than Emma, her college professor, assistant DA, and divorcee with a young child. Emma and Simon's relationship seems to be doomed from the start, but you just cannot ignore the sizzling chemistry between them. Though he knows technically his relationship with Emma is wrong, Simon just cannot stay away from her. Ultimately he plays a large role in Emma's moving forward with her life. Ultimately, though, some things follow you even when you try to leave them behind. After her attacker is released from prison, Emma must find the strength to face her nightmares and overcome her fears.
This story was not about pitying the victim or forgiving the one who hurt you, but rather celebrating life and the fact that it will go on when you're willing and able to let go of the past. I really liked Emma. You would think that having agoraphobia would be a weakness, but Emma was a strong character despite that. She was a lot of fun, and adding Simon and his amusing personality to the mix made the story was overall enjoyable. The author was able to throw in a mix of fun, drama, happiness, tears, fear, and surprise into this story.
Two things could have made this story even better – 1) There needed to be distinct transition points between one scene and the next. Often times I found myself having to back up a sentence or two because I had not realized that the scene/day/speaker had changed, and what I was reading was not making sense. Better transition between scenes would have made the overall flow of the story more continuous and ultimately smoother. 2) I got the impression that the book is set in America, but there is a lot of English-speak in the story. It would have been much more realistic if Emma had been English and living in America or the story was set in the UK. Overall, though, I really enjoyed this story very much.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
In So Many Reasons Why, we meet twenty year old Emma, a college student living on her own in New York. Emma's not your average college student. After being brutally attacked at age ten, she's not left the house in years. She developed agoraphobia and continues to have nightmares about her attacker. Her relationship with her parents is strained. She does have two best friends who create a fantastic support system for her, but sometimes it's just not enough. In the first few pages of the book, Emma receives devastating news. Her attacker is on track to be paroled and will soon be out of prison, sending her into even more of a panicked state.
After sending an email to gain clarification on an assignment, Emma quickly finds herself engaging in a playful back and forth email exchange with Professor Simon Anderson. They fall into an easy friendship, and eventually it's evident that they both have feelings for each other. As he's her professor, any form of relationship will be considered inappropriate, but they soon find that they can't help their undeniable attraction.
As their relationship progresses, Emma continues to deal with the knowledge that her attacker is now free. Will Simon's love be enough to release Emma from her own prison, or will she be stuck there forever? **** The very first paragraph of this book had me hooked and the rest of the story does not disappoint. This not your average Professor/Student novel. While there is an essential romantic element to the story, and Simon plays a huge role in Emma's development, this story is so much more than your average romance. To me, So Many Reasons Why is about finding your inner strength to overcome the worst of your fears. Ms. Johnson did a fantastic job of showcasing Emma's agoraphobia without making her a pitiful, weak character. Emma had a brilliant balance of strong will while still suffering from her anxiety. The e-mail exchanges between Emma and Simon were a wonderful addition to this book, and a great way for the relationship to develop realistically as Emma does not leave her home. Their chemistry was undeniable, regardless of the vast age difference. I truly enjoyed witnessing Emma find strength not only through Simon, but within herself to overcome her fears when it mattered the most. The main storyline in SMRY is wrapped up, but the ending does provide somewhat of a cliffhanger to set-up book 2. I'm anxiously looking forward to book 2 in this series.
***ARC kindly provided by Ms. Johnson in exchange for an honest review.
Before I get into it, I would just like to say the cover is very nice and adds to the appeal of this book.
So after reading So Many Reasons Why I kinda feel like this:

Should I jump on Em and Simon’s bandwagon or not?
Despite this book being equal parts irritating to enjoyable, I think I will ! This book was very well written with a pretty good story line. It was certainly no “Hopeless” (Colleen Hoover), but it held its own.
Emma, still suffering immensely from being attacked when she is a child, has an acute case of agoraphobia, making it hard to forge social connections and pursue what would be considered a normal life. Credit to Missy Johnson for tackling the sensitive subject area of abuse. It’s always a risky move but I think it was done both tastefully and with tact in this case. We are given enough details about the attack to be both sympathetic and understanding but not privy to the gory details that could potential disturb some touchy readers.
Emma is both beautiful and strong.
She has been through so much, yet she still gets up everyday and makes something of herself through study. This is commendable, however, at quite a lot of times in the book I found her to be quite irritating and dramatic. I felt like every two sentences she was mentioning Derek and her agoraphobia. It was like she defined herself only by those things, which I suppose I can understand, but nevertheless it was irritating.
Making excuses to study at home, Em makes an unlikely friend in her professor, Simon.

Simon is Assistant DA and Em’s professor, so to say the stakes are high for him with pursuing a relationship with his student is an understatement. Despite this, they cannot seem to resist the connection that they have with each other. He is eighteen years older. In a word, HOT .
I love me a good student-professor romance. I felt this one to be a bit lacking though. Definitely not the best I have read but decent. Their relationship progresses very fast, quite unrealistically so, but the focus of the book really seems to be on Emma and her issues, with her relationship with Simon taking a back seat. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but as a personal preference I would have liked more romance and to actually see the relationship play out a bit more. It was like one moment they didn’t know each other, the next they are shacking up in her house and overcoming a huge hurdle that she didn’t think she could get over after the attack. It was all a bit too much too fast for me.
There was a fair amount of twists and turns in the book, some surprising and unexpected. I love it when that happens, I feel like it doesn’t happen enough in romance books these days. However, though unexpected, none seemed to elicit a strong emotional response out of me, it was more like a, oh hey didn’t expect that, rather than a gasp *hand moves to cover mouth*.
I also loved Tom and Cass. They were both so supportive of Emma and so accepting of her issues. I hope we get to find out more about these two and their relationship in the next book.
Basically, this book had all the makings of a great read but I found it a bit lacking in its execution. However, I did enjoy reading it and don’t let my criticisms detract from that fact !
The ending was the biggest surprise of the book and I am looking forward to seeing what Missy will do for the next book, hopefully a bit more focused on Em and Simon’s relationship !
I really liked this book. It has banter, Chemistry between a Student/Teacher , and a little drama all mixed in .
We meet 20 yr old Emma in the beginning , she is a college student who takes all of her class’ online and talks to her teachers/ professors through email. She was attacked when she was 10 yrs old and because of that she has developed a case of agoraphobia and has nightmares still 10 yrs later. Her parents are not your typical parents and they truly don’t understand how she feels fully. She does have 2 of the greatest best friends and they are a great support system for her. In the first few chapters we learn that her attacker is going to be released for parole and she becomes even more panicked then she was.
Emma sends out an email to her new professor to confirm some info on her assignment and she soon find herself having playful and back and forth banter with her professor Simon. Simon is a Part time Professor who is also the Assistant DA. I loved how he was an older man and not just another young guy in a book.
They go back and forth in email for some time and they both start to have feelings for each other. She starts to open up to Simon about herself and Simon starts to develop strong feelings for her as well. Can Simon help Emma to get over her suffering of panic attacks, and her agoraphobia ??
The relationship that develops between these two is great. The way the story flows and is written based on the fact that Emma does not leave the house is even better. There are a couple twists and turns and you will be surprised by them without a doubt. There is a kinda cliffhanger , but not one that makes you SCREAM I want MORE RIGHT NOW…. It just leaves you wanting to see how everything turns out for these two great people. I am looking forward to reading book 2 when it comes out.
Book Blurb: Twenty year old Emma hasn’t left the house since she was attacked as a child.
She´s 20, he´s 38. She is a student, he is her professor. He is a DA assistant. He is divorced and has a daughter.
Emma has been studying from home excusing herself from class for having "glandular fever" which is a lie because she is agoraphobic. Ever since her abduction when she was 10 years old she has been afraid of being out in the open and the only way she can go outside is while being medicated.
She has questions about her essay and emails her professor Simon who sends her a smart ass reply, to which she replies back with a very good comeback. They email each other daily and for the first time Emma stops thinking about her abduction, who happens to have a hearing in three weeks to see if he can get released and introduced to society again.
Fate and circumstances pull them together. Their love is prohibited. They will have to fight from hell back to be together. Emma is somewhat insecure even though Simon reassures her about his love for her. Tragedy strikes them when a 12 year old girl is abducted and she will have to face her fears to save this little girl. Will all the trouble they've gone through is worth waiting to be together?
Wow double Wow! Loved this book! Emma went through some pretty hectic stuff and was a very broken because of it. But Simon walks into her life and he's like the ray of sunshine she's been without for 10 years. Their relationship isn't an easy one because they have a lot going against them. I loved how the author still brought in some humour into Emma internal dialogue even though she's a very broken young woman. This book had on the edge of my seat the entire time I read it. Again I loved it! I can't help but think that's there more to come...
I've never read a novel that has an emphasis on agoraphobia so it was like covering new ground in an inviting and entertaining method. I found the back story of the main character, Emma, to be perfectly balanced throughout the story. The author didn't overpower the plotline with the sordid details of what happened to her when she was younger. Instead she gives us slivers of memories in brief spurts throughout the book. This was a method that I liked and felt was well-played.
Some readers may feel conflict in the quickly-developing relationship between Emma and her college professor however I didn't feel that way at all. I've been privy to some private true stories of people who, in realy life, developed intense emotional connections to another person over the computer and for me this aspect of the story was pretty much in tune with the realities of online chat and email experiences. It can happen. It doesn't alway, but it can. For this reason I didn't have a hard time following this aspect of the story. The professor even clearly admitted that what he was doing was wrong in many ways. People will do things, even knowing that it is wrong, especially when emotions get involved.
Emma is young, stifled in her home in which she never leaves, and is very stressed due to the impending release of her attacker. Seeing her attach her emotions onto something else was something I also could appreciate as being potentially valid in real life. Again, I had no problem with this storyline. The relationship storyline was at times very...erotic and...wow. I would definitely NOT let my teen read this. It is definitely for adults only.
Now, where did the story lack, again, in my personal opinion:
It took me a while to really connect with Emma's friends Cass and Tom. With that being said, I think Emma was very fortunate to have friends like these. I won't say this was a very negative influence to the story. They weren't at all the vital characters in this novel so to not grow attached...well, it doesn't knock my verdict score down much. I did connect pretty well with Emma's grandma and in fact felt she added a very comedic feel to the small scenes she was in. I think the author could have developed a parallelism using Emma and her grandma better if she had attempted to.
There were small points in the storyline that I felt was completley unwarrented and not needed at all. The emails to the distant relative and how she played into the story...it was all very useless in my opinion. The author did however try to twist everything together and I suppose in some small unrelative manner she did.
The pre-ending....hmm. I felt that Emma overcame some very BIG steps in too brief a time. Perhaps if I saw a little more movement throughout the story I would have accepted her 'heroic' attempts. I'm not sure how I feel about it. I also don't know I felt about the wrap-up before the end. I think the best way to summarize it was...not totally worked out mentally before writing it out.
The end itself was bittersweet. It was good. I liked Emma's choices, though hard they were and I'm not sure if everybody would make such a decision. I liked that her choices were supported. I liked that the author had the guts to leave it the way she did. Open to interpretation. Stories are alive and they continue, if written well, even after the story is over. This author attempted it and I felt she did it well.
So Many Reasons Why kept me compulsively reading. The subject matter was pretty heavy—the rape and attempted murder of a child being the stage for everything that happened. It was brutal to read at times, making me cringe especially when Emma describes what happened to her. Her being so scarred not just physically but mentally didn't surprise me at all; a trauma like that isn't something that a person just forgets about. The way that it manifested itself for her, through agoraphobia, was a unique twist to a love story.
Emma's interactions with Simon were great. While I am a bit skeptical about the time frame (everything happening in the span of like 3 weeks!?) I still enjoyed the relationship that developed between the two. The emails in the beginning were particularly my favorite part. The early stages of flirting and getting to know someone are always a little bit terrifying, let alone having the added baggage of not being able to step outside your home for a date.
For his part I thought Simon was a great guy. He certainly seems like a miscreant from the outside, given that he's an older man seducing his twenty-year-old student. Yet the way he talked and dealt with Emma showed tenderness and care. Even during the sex scenes there was still the constant presence of the feelings they had for one another, which was impressive. It wasn't like the author just inputted random sex scenes to juice it up. Instead, it was cohesive with the story; their personalities were maintained throughout.
I really liked the minor characters as well. Maddie of course was adorable. But the one I really loved the most was Cass. Cass and Tom were unequivocally the best friends. Having the strength to maintain a friendship with someone as broken and lost as Emma is a feat most people can't accomplish, and them sticking around through all of the shit was admirable, to say the least.
Complains: Many sentences started with “Shit Em” or “Please Em” or something similar. Minor spelling errors Spacing was a bit weird on my version, it confused the scenes a bit
First I'd like to thank Missy Johnson for sending me this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was a complete surprise until the end, every now and then you’d find short reminders of the past, her nightmares, which worked as sneak peaks of the main character's past, just enough to keep you alert and wanting to know more. And combined with the fact that most of her actions weren’t thought of, which means you’d only find out what she was doing as it happened, kept you fixated on the plot, looking for clues as to her next move.
The main character’s relationship with Simon started out with playful banter from both parts and evolved to a stinging uncertainty of their feeling for each other due to the differences that kept them apart, the impact their relationship, if made public would have on their lives.
The attack suffered by the main character when she was nothing but a child played an important part in understanding her feelings and reactions throughout the book, and also raised awareness to the topic of rape and the difficulties that follow. What happened in the past is always in the back of our minds, and it’s a slow process to learn how to overcome that, and that with every step forward, several steps back follow.
She also finds herself researching a case similar to hers, the difference being that the victim had been murdered. In contacting both the families of the victim and perpetrator she revealed her doubts about her own case and the impending release from prison of her attacker.
What needs to be brought to attention is her support system, which was severely lacking. While Emma had the unconditional support of her two best friends, her family only wanted to forget the attack and move forward as if nothing had happened, avoiding any mention of the subject and making her feel more isolated. Which isn’t as uncommon as we would like to believe.
In the end it took a lot of courage to go outside,to overcome her agoraphobia, to save 12 year old girl,a girl not much older than she was when she was attacked, from suffering through the same fate she had.
* I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review* I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading this book. I knew a little bit about it; the main character Emma was agoraphobic and began a relationship with a teacher but beyond that I didn't know what to expect. SMRW is not your average student/teacher relationship story, this was an emotional book about healing and love. [image error] Emma I liked Em's character. She was stronger than she realized & despite everything she had been through she was still full of life. I also liked Simon's character, he was kind and protective of Em. I loved that he had his priorities straight, he knew what was important and was willing to fight for what was right. I enjoyed the banter & relationship between Emma & Simon. [image error] Simon SMRW is a fast pace book that never lost my interest. While the emotional struggles Em goes through during the book are very tough but Miss Johnson is written in a way that tugs at the heart strings instead of leaving you in tears. It does not end with a cliff-hanger but it does end with a 'to be continued'. I am really anticipating the next book, I know it will sweet yet heartfelt. Not only will I read book 2 in this particular series I also plan to read others by Johnson. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys some reality & emotion in their books but not extreme angst.
Oh how I desperately want to give you 4-5 stars! But alas, there were dislikes that were holding me back): Don't get me wrong, the idea and story is fantastic...I just wish it was a longer story. I know that writing a book (especially a good one) is no easy feat so writing a somewhat short story is an achievement on its own, but I wish the story went into more detail. Some scenes ended way too quickly and sometimes the transitions from one scene to the next were a bit choppy. The ending was also something I somewhat dislike. I know that authors aren't obligated to let us know everything that happens next. But I desperately want to know what happens in the next couple of months when it happens (and I say it just because I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't read it yet). As far as I know, there's no sequel so I'm left with questions):
Despite the complaints I have, I don't regret reading this book. Though the book wasn't as long and detailed as I liked it to be, the story and idea made up for it. So if the complaints I listed won't bother you too much, I recommend you read it if you like romance novels.
EDITED ON MARCH 21, 2013 I decided to change the rating from 3.5 to 4 stars after being informed by the author and another user that there is in fact a sequel to the book (which I shall be awaiting for!). 3.5 stars to 4 stars is a big jump in ratings (in my opinion at least), but I figured that since I'm actually looking forward to the next installment, the book deserves an "I really liked it" rating(:
After being the victim of a vicious criminal attack when she was very young, Emma has isolated herself away in her apartment. Despite suffering from agoraphobia, she continues to see her very close friends and family and she still pursues a university degree via online classes.
She begins to have a very sweet (and forbidden) email correspondence with her professor, Simon Anderson. Simon makes Emma feel things she though she never would. When they finally meet – face to face – sparks fly and lines are crossed. With Simon, Emma feels she can overcome almost anything. But the one thing that scares her most is still out there and she may have to face it all over again.
So Many Reasons Why is a quick read – coming in at about 178 pages – but packs quite an emotional punch. I felt a real connection to Emma and her fears. Despite the significant barriers in front of her, she keeps on going and her strength really shows through. Simon is the perfect hero for the story. He is swoony (That’s important!), strong and understanding. I am not a big fan of the cliffhanger ending and this book ends with a big one, but I will most definitely be reading the sequel…
I can't even tell you how much I enjoyed this story. I am almost speechless. Within the first ten pages I shivered twice. Twice! I adored all of the characters! I never once got bored. Yes, there were a few parts where it slowed down from a faster pace, but I was so invested in the characters by that point, that I barely noticed. My favorite part was the email correspondence - oh my, they are so darn cute. The characters were well developed and the story line was amazing. My only criticism would be a few grammatical/spelling errors. But, it certainly wasn't enough to warrant anything less than 5 Stars. Beautifully done, Ms. Johnson.
I came across this book on a blog & thought the story sounded really different so I added it to my (ever-expanding) TBR list. Then when I found out that this is Missy Johnson’s debut novel (and that she’s a fellow Aussie heh heh), I was excited to see what I discovered... What I can say is WOW! This is a beautiful & poignant debut novel and the story really engaged me. Suffice to say I am extremely keen to read the follow-up book, and other stories to come from this literary talent. Congratulations to Missy! :D
Emma is shy, witty and intelligent. Since being attacked as a child, suffers from agoraphobia and recurring nightmares. After spending 10 years in jail, her attacker is soon to be released from prison. Finding it harder to cope than ever before, Emma finds witty emails to her Professor a way to escape.
Missy, you did an amazing job writing this book. I enjoyed your book very much. The story line and characters match very well. Cas was a pip. Tom,remind me of a joker which was cool. Thank for writing this book. Keep up the good work!
This is a rare occasion where there may be a couple of small spoilers because I simply could not avoid them and successfully give me honest review!
This book has so much promise so it disappoints me have to give it only 3 stars. And to be honest if it weren't for the redeeming qualities it did have I'm not sure I would have been able to get through it- and this is difficult for me to say. Okay, so let me see, where should I begin. Lets start with what I liked since that it usually what I do. I liked the premise of the story- Emma's attack, her agoraphobia, her two best friends, the family drama she uncovers... her grandmother! I thought the author did a good job setting up the details of the attack, Emma's reluctance to interact or trust others and so on. However these things led directly into what I didn't like.
First, I was totally confused as to where the author wanted us to think this story was taking place. I kept praying she would mention it because I was baffled by some of the language (slang) being used. She mentioned London and New Zealand, so I thought... oh okay, this must be Europe- which made sense because Emma kept using British or Australian slang (some of which I had no idea what she meant so I had to re-read the sentence or paragraph to try and decipher it) THEN out of no where she starts talking about Kansas and Connecticut. WTF?? And low and behold more than 3/4 of the way through the book we learn Emma lives in New York?? Then why the hell is she talking like she is British or Australian (Mate, Las... it went on and on). I believe I saw the author was from Victoria which I am assuming is British Columbia, so this is probably how she talks. However, as a reader, it was really confusing and the slang should have been more americanized.
Second, It took me a loooooong time to jump on the Fifty Shades bandwagon and I never officially took the leap. I read the first two books and was sooo annoyed 30 pages into the third, that I have yet to finish it. So, when I started seeing words/phrases/behaviors from fifty shades (ie. inner goddess, biting her lip, calling her Miss Mancelli) I was annoyed. I loathed some of these things in Fifty Shades because they were so overused. I will also say, while I don't mind some romance I am not really into erotica AT ALL!!! So when suddenly the book took this turn I was forcing myself through these scenes. Not that they weren't well written, don't get me wrong. They were. The author did a good job portraying erotic, vivid sex scenes, but this is just NOT my thing.
And FINALLY, the part that irked me the MOST... so Emma's attack-her agoraphobia... it all made sense. It was a cool twist and had SO much potential. She was unwilling to trust anyone but her two closest friends, she was fearful of opening the door, she was petrified of the day her attacker would be released from prison. I liked ALL of this. THEN out of no where she sends an email to someone a professor she doesn't know and within hours they are flirting back and forth. She's smitten and crushing on him and acting like a school girl. Okay, still believable I suppose. Then suddenly, in the middle of the night he calls her?????? Wait, didn't she smash her phone that morning? Didn't Tom give her his phone as a replacement?? How the heck would he have her number?? Emma takes this call in stride like it's no big deal... hmmm. Then when he randomly shows up at her apartment she opens and the door and invites him in like they are old friends. Isn't she supposed to be a scared, jumpy, agoraphobic who freaks out when she has to answer the door? And to just let him in? This is where the book pretty much lost me... and it
So on this scenerio continues, progressing very quickly until within a few days she is having this erotic, raunchy sex with a man she barely knows, after being sexually abused years prior that has forced her into hiding. To me, this seems contradictory. While some victims of sexual assault become promiscuous, Emma's behavior just doesn't add up at all and this really bothered me. It became too unbelievable. One minute she's ranting about her attack and agoraphobia and the next she is...well you know. On a final note, I will say that I was glad to see that Emma's problems weren't magically solved by the end of the book... this helped redeem it somewhat, but at the same time, there was one event that was very predictable to me, but I guess we will have to see how it unfolds in the next book.
I will more than likely read the second book in this series because that's how I am.... I just have to finish a story, but I certainly hope some of these things are worked out... well as much as can be at this point
WOW!!! i cannot wait till the 2nd book is out. How can someone end a book like that! lol. No, before half of you get mad there isn't a cliff hanger. just a perfect ending to a book that makes you want to continue the read. i love how fast i could read this book. it was always interesting and not boring. even though it is only 170 pages it still got to the point and told a very wonderful story. i got this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
this book is about a girl named Emma who had a very horrible past. one night while at a friends house she called her mom and asked for a ride home. her mother said it is only a couple houses down just walk home. well, that was the worst mistake of her mother's life. she was kidnapped, raped, stabbed, and left for death at a community park. Emma was 10 at the time. now 10 years later she cannot cope with everyday life
Emma has a fear of leaving the house. she cannot go on her porch or even out her door because of fear that her attacker who get her again. her attacker is in jail, but up for parole in a couple of weeks. Emma has horrible nightmares and even panic attacks when she thinks of it. Emma is in college and trying to work on her finals for school. her professor sent her a nasty email stating that she could not have an extension on her paper because everyone is asking for one. he suggested that if she was having trouble with her paper that she needed to come to a study group. Emma being pissed of at her teacher for not reading her file and knowing that she has a medical condition that she cannot leave the house sends a nasty email right back. so, it starts!
Emma's profession Simon starts flirting with her over emails. he says he is sorry for not looking at her file and starts sending her information on the criminal cases that she needed to work on. Emma is totally into her professor because he is hot and decides why not flirt back with him, so she uses her not being able to leave the house a good excuse to talk. the emails turn into texting and phone calls. Simon tells Emma he knows this is wrong because he is her professor but tells her he has a crush on her. Emma gets excited and tells him the same thing. To rush up the story a little bit they start dating.
Emma's best friends tom and Cass are over all the time watching movies and brings her food and other things that she needs from the house. Emma hears about all of Cass' relationship issues and sexual experiences. tom is her best friend and often sleeps over at the house to make Emma feel safe. before you jump to conclusions they never do anything besides cuddle. Honestly, they both really don't have that kind of feelings for each other! Cass doesn't know how to take the information about Emma being with someone 18 years older than her and plus she think Simon is an asshole.
Emma and Simon's relationship heat up and he helps her fight her fears of leaving the house. no, she didn't leave the house yet, but now she is able to go on her deck. Simon introuduces a little 4 year old child of his and they hit it off. Emma starts to baby sit for him while he is working as a assistant district attorney. Emma has no problem playing with a 4 year old and getting her to eat her veggies! Emma even hit it off with Simon's ex wife. strangely they both found each other nice.
now here is where it gets good. Emma's attacker gets out on parole and she is afraid that he is going to attack her again. she starts to have tons of panic attacks to the point where someone has to watch her at all times. OH i forgot!!! there is a huge twist in the story that will leave your breathless. Want to know what it is?!! well, read the book! i think i told you enough!
First, I’d like to thank Missy Johnson for gifting the book to me. The central character of this story has been the victim of a brutal sexual assault at the age of 10. Tragedy is an essential component of fiction; without it we’d be forced to read fluff chick lit all the time. Yet it is a form of drama that is not always handled correctly. Some authors delve too deep towards the depressing, a tactic that will lose readers fast. But Missy Johnson avoided this path. She’s not only a fluid writer but she makes it evident this story is about the protagonist’s healing process and road to recovery.
A Brief Synopsis
Twenty year old Emma is not your typical college student living in New York City. She suffered a brutal attack at the tender age of 10 and bears not only permanent physical wounds but also psychological damage. Her two best friends have created a support system for her, but it’s not enough to fight off her severe agoraphobia and the recurring nightmares from the incident. When an email to her professor asking about an assignment turns into a flirtatious banter, Emma begins to forget that her attacker has been released on parole. As the beautiful and hotly pursued professor Simon gets to know Emma, she wonders if he’s just the one to help her forget her past and finally move on.
Now Let’s Break It Down
I’ll admit I was uneasy reading this book in the beginning because of the subject matter. I’m sure others feel this way too: When I hear about rape incidents in the news, it disturbs me more than the stray murder here and there. I never can comprehend why any one in their right mind would want to attack anyone — especially a young child — in this way. But that’s just it. They’re not in their right mind. Usually they are a sociopath with a psychological disorder, like the protagonist’s attacker in this book.
I felt very immersed in this story from the beginning. Missy Johnson painted a very realistic portrait of what it’s like to be a sexual assault victim tormented years after the incident. Emma did not experience a typical assault; she was held captive for three long days, the reason she suffers from agoraphobia — an anxiety disorder in which the sufferer perceives their environment as one where they are unable to escape or get help. For this reason she never leaves her apartment, a restriction that seriously impedes her college experience and life in general.
Emma undergoes a huge transformation in this book, and (without trying to give away any details) I was surprised by how brave she became near the end. The book ends with a cliffhanger, but it’s not one of those ‘sudden’ ones that comes out of nowhere. It sets up for the sequel nicely.
One thing I thought was a bit strange was how fast the romance between Emma and Simon progressed. I was expecting it to be more drawn out with Emma taking more time to get close to Simon, provided her traumatic experience. I think the story would have been a bit stronger and more suspenseful if there were more tense, dramatic, frustrating moments between the two before they became obviously a couple.
Conclusion
This is a fantastic professor-student romance mixed with tragedy. The story flowed almost seamlessly, excluding a handful of grammatical errors and some unusual slang. In the end it’s a beautiful story of hope and moving on from anguish towards contentment.
I'd like to thank to Missy Johnson for gifting me this book in exchange for honest review. For more reviews check: http://mariasbookshelf.blogspot.sk/
Synopsis
What I liked
I loved characters, especially Emma. I felt like the author really described Emma's emotions very well, and that's why I connected with her. Her relationship with Simon was for me a bit of a shock, because normally you would have 18 years old girl with 20 years old guy, but not 38 years old man (heh). However I think, that's what made this "stereotypical" story original. There were also some very funny moments in the book, especially the e-mail part conversation. I couldn't stop giggling while reading it. I also cannot forget to mention the cover, I think it's absolutely gorgeous!
What I didn't like
To be honest, I think the story was very predictable. I figured out almost whole plot within first few chapters. I would also say, that for me the book lacked more action.
Overall thought
So Many Reasons Why really reminded me Easy by Tammara Webber( which I absolutely love) and Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks. I think this is ideal summer book. There's romance, drama, little bit of action, simply everything what you'd want in lightweight read. I have to mention though that there is some sexual content ( only few chapters, lol). Overall I liked the story, and I'm dying to know how will this story continue.
I saw a thread on Goodreads in which the author was looking for some people who wanted to review her book. After reading the summary I was really interested in the story and I was very excited to start it.
So, if you read the summary this book is obviously about a student-teacher relationship, and honestly that was the main reason I wanted to read this book. I really enjoyed the beginning of this book and I wanted to keep reading. I liked the emails Emma and Simon sent back and forth and was very curious to see how things would progress between them.
Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy this novel as much as I'd anticipated. Emma is twenty years old and Simon, the teacher, is a thirty-eight year old guy with a child. That is one of the main reasons why I didn't enjoy this story as much. I am a nineteen year old girl myself and because of Simon's age I just couldn't imagine him being attractive at all. Every time they would kiss I just pictured her kissing a really old guy... I know that thirty-eight isn't that old, but it isn't young, either... He was almost twice her age and I personally don't like huge age differences like that.
This book didn't really feel like it was about a student and a teacher. I think the big age difference was a much bigger issue. Since Emma doesn't ever leave her house, she doesn't actually go to school. The only interaction they really had as student and teacher were some emails.
I liked Emma as a character, but she wasn't really anything special. I didn't care for her friends Tom and Cass at all. I thought they were really dull characters and as a reader you don't really get to know anything about their lives. Simon's daughter was pretty cute.
Since this is a New Adult book, there also were some sex scenes. To be honest I thought they were absolutely awful. The way they were written and the words that were used reminded me a lot of 50 shades of grey... and for me, that's really not a positive thing.
If you don't mind huge age differences, you might still enjoy this book. It just wasn't really my cup of tea.
So Many Reasons Why in the story of an agoraphobic girl named Emma. There are vague references to what happened to Emma to make her so fearful, but it is not until a good portion of the way through we learn just how awful her experiences were. Emma has two wonderful friends, Tom and Cass, who have helped her be as normal as possible for someone in her situation. Her own parents however are not as supportive.
Emma meets Simon, her professor, when she emails him for an assignment. They exchange emails, and eventually phone calls, before meeting face to face. They have a great banter between themselves. He helps her face her fears and her past, being supportive the entire time. While they are very happy they are both waiting for the other shoe to drop. Waiting for her past, or their present to affect their future.
I can't even come up with words right now for how I felt about this book. It's definitely not for the faint of heart. If you are looking for something light hearted turn back now! If you're looking for something gut wrenching and raw, run, don't walk, to pick this up. So Many Reasons Why will reach into your heart, crush it, then swiftly made make it into something better and stronger.
Emma's story is extremely unnerving even though we don't get the nitty gritty of what happened. The suggestion was more than enough. And Simon, dear Simon, so strong for her. I loved how honest they were with one another. So many times heroes and heroines push away the real issues, Emma and Simon told one another either what they were experiencing or that they weren't ready to express that part of themselves yet. It was refreshing. Their banter, especially their emails, was my favorite part of the story. It lent some comic relief to an otherwise very heavy book. Tom and Cass were great. I loved how they treated Emma, with care when she required understanding, and like she was completely normal otherwise. They rounded the book out wonderfully. Her parents were a completely different story. I was mortified, especially with her mother. Grams was awesome though!
I always find it unfair when I read a book with an uber hot professor...in my 4 years at school I never had a prof that was even a little hot. Ok, rant done.
Emma was attacked on her way home when she was 10 years old. Attacked and taken and raped. As a result she never leaves her home. When people other than her close friends come over, she has to take anti anxiety pills. For one of her classes she is writting an essay on crimes and victims. She has no problem with picking a past crime (her own), but emails the prof for a little guidence for a recent case. After a snappy reply, Emma and Simon start flirting back and forth.
Eventually Simon and Emma begin to date. Both of them are risking a lot. He is an assistant DA, and a proffessor (putting both jobs at risk). She has never dated or told many people about her past. As their relationship blossoms, Emma finds out that the monster who hurt her is being released on parole. Shortly after another little girl goes missing. Also at this time the papers have gotten wind of Emma and Simon's relationship and the DA's office requests that he spend some time away from her (by the way there is totally an 18 year age difference here).
Emma realizes she knows where the rapist has taken the little girl, and for the first time since the attack, she leaves her house. I loved that she put aside all her fears (or at least ignored them) to save the other little girl from a fate like her's. At the end of the book Simon and Emma recieve some surprising news...she is pregnant (after being told she would never have children due to the rapes). We are left with the doctor telling her that she likely won't survive the pregnancy and Emma pleading with Simon.
I read this book in about 2 hours. I was sucked in. I loved Tom and Cass (so glad they ended up together). I found Emma incredibley brave, and found myself totally rooting for her( think Pretty Woman at the horse races where Juila Roberts is fist pumping). I hope I am able to find book 2 soon....must...read..it
Imagine waking up with the same terrible nightmare every day for the last ten years. If this is not awful enough, imagine not being able to leave your house! You can't imagine that? Well, it is happening to twenty year old Emma. Because of the attack ten years ago, Emma has not left her house because of her agoraphobia. When Emma hears that there is a possibility that her attacker is going to be released, she breaks down. Could life be any more unfair?
Well actually no, because form there, things start to get better. When Emma e-mails her professor about an assignment things start to get interesting. What starts with innocent flirting ends up with having strong feelings for each other. They can name so many reasons why this is not done, but the feelings are just so strong. Will the relationship betweeen the two stand?
I was really impressed by the book. Not many books can make me laugh out loud, but this book succeeded in that (very impressive considering the situation with the attack and everything round about). Form the beggining I was hooked on the book, not wanting to put it down (although I had to write an essay :P). I loved how the author made Emma such a strong and funny woman. In spite of the attack she continues her life with the help of her best friends Tom and Cass. Trying to do her best at school, tries to date (although it's not such a succes). And we should not forget the hot and sexy professor Simon. I really liked Simons character and you could just feel how much he wanted to protect Emma and how much he cared about her.
Overall I really liked the book and it was here and there somewhat predictable, but that did not bother me or anything. What happend at the end however I did not expect! I was like 'wow really'? :O I cannot wait for the second book in this series! ;D
Emma is attacked as a child and 10 years later she is still struggling with the horrible things she endured. She has the support from her family and 2 best friends who are always there for her. But because of her attack she has agoraphobia and never leaves the house.....never ever. She is technically in college and due to a project deadline getting close she decides to email her professor to help with her work. At first Simon is rude thinking she's a slacker but their casual emails turn into flirting....and oohhh I felt he was flirting with me...... Emma has lots of challenges ahead of her ...her attacker is up for parole, she has nightmares and constant panic attacks...and to top it all she starts having feelings for the hot professor which is slightly inappropriate since he is not only her professor but also 18 years older than her.
This book surprised me because reading the description I thought it would be all about the inappropriate relationship. Which really is not that big of a deal and seriously I fell for him too. Simon is just adorable....their emails to each other had me grinning like they where for me. Just too cute. Yes, they kinda fell in love fast but so did I. The real surprise which I was not expecting was the struggle she has because of her attack...but knowing what happens to her it makes sense really. I was jus just not expecting it. I really thought it was going to be all about the inappropriate romance.
All in all I really enjoyed this book and read it in one sitting.....the writing was great and the plot was very engaging. I look forward to book 2.
.... NO SIGAS LEYENDO QUE VA A HABER ALGÚN SPOILER...
. . . . . . .
