Dead bodies are being left on the border between the vamps and the wolves. The world is aware of the paranormal and while some just want to live in peace and some are scared, there are those who are hungry for more. But with a killer on the loose, Sheriff Ava has enough on her plate. When all signs point to her one-nighter, Julian, the wolf pack Alpha, she decides to take him in. Too bad someone out there is determined to kill her and Julian seems to be the only person standing in the way. He's the man she can't help but want and yet feels she can't have. With evil surging in town, is there hope for them? This story was short but packed full of action. The romance was there in the background, hinted at and briefly highlighted, but it was the action and the drama that really caught my attention. This novella just reaffirmed why I enjoy this author's writing so much!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Re-release: A killer is stalking the streets of Crossroads, Mississippi, and it’s up to Sheriff Ava Dushaine to stop him. But when suspicion falls on werewolf alpha Julian Kasey—Ava’s ex-lover and the man who still haunts her dreams—Ava knows that she’ll either have to prove his innocence…or watch the whole town go up in flames.

Originally part of an Entangled anthology.

REVIEW: This particular storyline is approximately 50 pages in length and is a day in the life of Sheriff Ava Dushaine and Werewolf Alpha Julia Kasey.

As Ava begins to investigate several murders that resemble werewolf killings, she will step into a minefield of betrayal and discrimination. Thinking her one time lover and pack Alpha Julian knows more about the killings then he is willing to admit, Ava attempts to bring the shifter in for questioning but the pair do not get far when Ava is attacked and left for dead. When a second attempt on her life reveals the truth behind the killings, Ava and Julian must make a decision that will affect the rest of their lives.

Cynthia Eden loves to write about the werewolves and pack alphas, and A Bit of Bite is no exception. If you have a few minutes, A Bit of Bite is a quick read and FREE at most ebook retailers.

3.5 Stars.

Is it really second chance romance if they both only had a ONS months before?
IMO it's not but who knows.
Anyway, no mention if they both were with other people after their ONS but the hero stalked her to make sure she was safe and he said that he waited for her so I took as he was celibate, who knows about the heroine.

“I watched you for all these months. I waited for you to come back to me."

~No OW/OM.
~Kick ass, strong heroine.
~Good hero.
~Very short but I still liked it.

I admit I like free shit. I also admit I’m not entirely rational in my thought process. For example, I happily hand over my Bouchercon and Left Coast Crime Conference fees and feel like I’ve won the lottery when I receive a bag filled with books. Seriously, this ends up being one of the major highlights of these conferences. So in my continued pursuit of this high, minus the conference fees, I have decided to scour Amazon for the best free short stories and books available. With that being said, let’s get to the review.

First, I should probably warn you that I’m not exactly the target audience for paranormal romance. If I saw a big breasted, blonde vampire, or werewolf, in tight leather pants, my first thought would not be how hot she looked. Well, it might be…but then I’d run like a roadrunner and hope to hell she didn’t spot me, because I don’t exactly have the strength to fend off the undead or not-so-dead, even if she ends up being about a foot shorter than me. And, besides, I’d rather not pop a woman, even if she has claws or fangs, right in the kisser.

I did, however, find myself entertained with this werewolf-filled short story. And the eye-popping sex scene nearly caused my back teeth to float. With bars and cars exploding and psychopathic killers hovering just above the streets, there’s action to be had around every corner. It’s like the reading equivalent of big breasted, blonde eye candy, and I soaked in every page.

Ava provided just enough spunk for me, even though she did swoon a bit too easily whenever Julian was around, but I guess werewolves have that effect on women. Which kind of begs the question if my wife would approve of me becoming a bit bigger and hairier. And if she does, then I’ll probably be forced to reevaluate my overall opinion of the paranormal romance sub-genre. In the meantime, you can’t beat free, especially if you’re a paranormal fan. A BIT OF BITE should satisfy your craving.

I actually really enjoyed this super short read.
It is PNR Erotica with a bit of 'Murder'
It was the first book I ever read by this author and got me wanting more of her writing.
I actively looked for more of her books and found some I really enjoyed and some I do not.
This one was a fun read and I loved the characters.
It definitely needed MORE body and depth.

Review A Bit of Bite by Cynthia Eden

Sheriff Ava is tasked with the job of keeping a lid on paranormal prejudices in the ‘city’ of Crossroads, and Julian is the alpha werewolf. Ava and Julian slept together before Ava got the sheriff job, and now there’s a killer and it could be Julian, and a legend about Halloween, which might be the one night when werewolves can make humans into werewolves.

This isn’t really my genre, because it’s cops AND shifters, and I can’t really be much bothered with either. I also had vague issues with Ava the sheriff because my understanding is that this is an elected role rather than an appointment. However, since I don’t know and I’m not American and Cynthia Eden is, and anyway it could all work differently in a paranormal world, that’s not a big problem. However, Ava was incompetent at law enforcement. And if heroines are going to have jobs with guns I want them to be competent.

Julian was a fairly nothing character – he’d effectively taken a paranormal widdle on Ava’s leg so all the other paranormals knew that she was his territory, and left it at that.

This is a long~ish short story, and as such relies heavily on the reader to have a working knowledge of a paranormal world, which is fine, but it does mean that this felt bog standard, had fairly weak characterisation, and relied mostly on sexual tension and the sexy times. Which, since they happened in a normal bed in a normal house in a normal way, were also bog standard.

‘A Bit of Bite’ isn’t bad if you’re looking for a short and forgettable paranormal taster.

The more I read of Ms Eden's short stories the more intrigued I am to read the full length ones. Because even though, these are short....they are jam packed full of all the things I come to love and enjoy about paranormal romance.
A world where humans live in fear of the newly outed vampires, werewolves. Ava is a human sheriff who is made to walk that line of keeping the vampires and werewolves from humans without them turning on her. Only problem, the local alpha is her ex lover. When someone starts making trouble for her all sorts of secrets come out.

I really love this sort of story. Werewolves being one of my favourite parnanormal creatures its great where there is a human involved. Especially one that doesn't know all the rules, especially the ones about claiming, hehehe. Usually makes for an explosive scene. Anyway A bit of Bite was an exciting and pleasant way to spend reading for an hour or so. Read and enjoy!

I got this book because I enjoy Cynthia Eden's writing!! I noticed it was really short and then noticed it was FREE?! It didn't take me long to read it and unfortunately it wasn't because it was totally engrossing and exciting. At the beginning of the story, it grabbed me and I couldn't wait to get more into it. And then it just fell flat. It didn't have a lot of body to it at all. You have the attention grabber at the beginning, build up of action and love story with the Alpha male and strong minded/willed female shortly after the opening pages and then..... BLAH. The End. As for the recommendation of this read? Unfortunately, I have to say because it is free, go for it. I would, however, recommend you looking at her other books she has out there. For example, try her Bound series or her Eternal series. Those I HIGHLY recommend. ***Warning**** Those have sexual content. :)

A 3.5 star for me.

This is a fantastic short story. It has all the elements I like: mystery, action, romance and a hot werewolf.

Ava’s job as sheriff is to keep the peace between the shifters, vampires, and humans. Yep, it’s as easy as it sounds, especially with someone out there killing humans and vampires. The suspect turns out to be Ava’s hot one night stand Julian, Alpha of the wolf pack. The connection between the two is strong and Julian wants Ava back. Together they need to find out who’s been doing the killings and keep Ava alive after she’s been betrayed by those she should’ve been able to trust.

For a short story this was remarkably detailed and did leave me wishing it had been longer and more developed. It could’ve easily been novel length.

I downloaded this book as a NOOK freebie a long time ago, and I needed an urban fantasy/ paranormal story for Romance Bingo, so I figured now would be a good time to read it. The story was a great way to spend time while at the base Laundromat. It is a short paranormal novella (about 95 NOOK pages) about Ava, a human liaison/town sheriff of Crossroads, Mississippi and Julian, the werewolf alpha. I dig werewolf shifter romances, and Julian came to impress and did he ever impress me. Ava was actually a smart heroine when it came to dangerous situations. They worked together as a romantic couple and as partners to find and bring in the killers after them. It was a little short, but page turning. I want to read a lot more from this author in the future and this series!

A Bit of Bite was a quick and entertaining read. I devoured this one in little under an hour and enjoyed every second of it.

Eden has a knack for description. Her scenes were vivid and very enjoyable. I loved the characters, especially Ava. She was a strong female lead with an awesome attitude.

My only issue and the reason for the three stars was that it was just too short for me to really get invested in the characters. Although I really enjoyed reading about Ava and Julian, I just needed … more.

Overall, it was a fun way to spend the hour, so if you are looking for a quick paranormal read with some steamy romance then check this one out.

This was a nice, quick read while on the elliptical today. Pretty decent story. Has me a but interested in at least reading the first full length story in this series.

I like Julian's intensity and his deep want of Ava. I liked how he wasn't willing to let her go. I would have liked to know more about Ava's ex-boyfriend. Maybe in a later book we will get more details.

Too bad this one wasn't a full-length novel. Despite it's length, I really enjoyed the story and the characters. Some authors have difficulty with shorts - they often lack a beginning, middle and end. That was not the case here. The author did a good job of introducing the characters and setting the scene for the story. I look forward to reading more by Cynthia Eden.

Good short story. Ava is sheriff and trying to keep humans alive in a town with vampires and werewolves. As bodies start showing up she's got to figure out what is going on, luckily the alpha werewolf is invested in helping her.

I love the way Cynthia Eden creates an alpha (H) Hero. There is just something about a possessive, protective H that is addictive. The syfy element is just an added bonus.

Julian is an alpha wolf of a pack that lives in an area where it butts up against a bunch of vampires. The interesting thing is how they're all referred to as supernaturals. The humans are aware of their exsistance and they're protected and watched by the cops as we would be.

It puts things in a different perspective and then as another layer of icing on the cake the sheriff, Ava, is Julian's love interest. It is very appealing how fast the story draws you in and the characters come to life. It brings it all to this battle and driven by someone manipulating officers to lead him to his own desire. This is not a complete story so beware while this is free the possibility to stop here is very difficult. Enjoy!

This was a quick book with a little romance, action and plenty of werewolves. I enjoyed this book. I have not read any of Cynthia's books before but I look forward to reading more of her work. Ava Dushaine & Julian Kasey were great characters and fun to imagine. I love to imagine characters coming to life before my eyes. This was a fun and exciting paranormal romance.

My Initial Reaction...
Honestly I was a bit disappointed. This was a free eBook and they usually take me a bit to get to. I enjoyed the story overall, but this one's description and especially the little warning at the end had me expecting a much more exciting read. I suspect that Cynthia Eden's novels are much better, since my major complaints with this short all related to underdevelopment of people and storylines.

The Characters...
This short is basically a day in the lives of two main characters: Sheriff Ava Dushaine and Werewolf Alpha Julian Kasey.

Ava has the potential to be the kind of heroine I love: she's independent and strong-willed. She's smart. And she has a weakness for the town's really hot werewolf. Because this is a short, we only get to see a brief glimpse of her character and it was enough to make me want to see more. With more development in a longer story-line I think she could be a fabulous character. Within the context of this story, she's just captivating enough to keep me reading, but not really invested.

I got to know Julian even less than Ava, but like her I saw potential for my kind of hero. For one he's a pain in the ass! But in all the right ways: he's stubborn and overly protective, because he's head over heels. But he didn't work for me. I need to see love interests develop, at least a little bit, especially if the guy is going to be possessive. For me, that's only endearing after I've grown to love him because I know he's got a soft underbelly; it's not enough to tell me, I have to see it for myself. So once again, I think that in the context of a longer story, where I would have had time to develop affection for him, Julian would be a fantastic character. As it is, he's hot and sexy and good enough,

The Story...
We start this story with Ava investigating several murders that could be the work of werewolves. During her investigations she runs into all kinds of obstacles, including more murders, betrayal, deceit, and Julian. As Alpha of the area's pack, he's at the top of her list of people to question and she's not sure he's telling her everything. Of course it would be simpler to investigate him if she hadn't slept with him and didn't still feel hopeless drawn to him. And if people would stop trying to kill her. With Julian by her side, for better or for worse, she's going to get to the bottom of what's going on and to her feelings for the sexy alpha.

In the end, it just felt like the story skipped all the plot building and went straight for the series of climaxes that usually make up the heart of the book. I realize that this is a short and thus has less time for that buildup, but for me it needed even just a tad bit more substance. Thankfully all those climaxes did mean that the story wasn't ever boring, even if I wasn't really invested in the characters, didn't understand their world or the importance of their actions.

Concluding Sentiments...
I really wish I loved this short, but I did still like it. It was like walking into a pretty good movie in the middle and being able to tell it's a movie you'd like, but you need to watch it from the beginning - except that in this case there was no beginning. It makes me want to read some of Cynthia Eden's longer works though!

This was a quick and great read! I have never read anything by Cynthia Eden before and if this is an example of what I can expect from future reads then I am very happy to have found her. Though this was a short novella it was tight and gave me the benefit of getting the characters known quickly and easily. The story was fast paced but left me with the feeling of knowing what was going on and why these things were happening. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this book and these characters.

Sheriff Ava Dushaine was assigned to Crossroads, Mississippi as the paranormal liaison in the area. When the paranormal community made themselves known 10 years ago they were assigned areas within the states that they could reside in, this usually had both werewolves and vampires living in close proximity to each other. The people of the towns close to them are wary and feel that they are in danger from the having the supernaturals so close to them, and someone is stoking that fear even higher.

With three murders of humans in a short period and the bodies being found on the land between the paranormals land Ava has to solve this quickly. When the Alpha, Julian Kasey, shows up at the murder scene she has no choice but to take him in for questioning. What she doesn't realize is that things are more complicated than she would have ever thought and her life may hang in the balance.

This was an exciting story about what a person will do in order to gain what they want and who they will sacrifice for that goal. It is also about gaining love even in the midst of bad things. Definitely worth reading and giving you a taste of what you can look forward to in the future.

I first read this in the anthology Entangled and it's free right now. Grab it while you can.

The sheriff of a small town is investigating a murder when the werewolf alpha shows up. She has a history with him, even if it was only one night. But he can't forget her, and she's trying her best to forget him. Unfortunately he's her main suspect for the attack.

The body was left on the border between vampire and werewolf territories, and from what she can tell, someone is trying to start something. With the timing of a Blood Moon and Halloween coinciding, it'll bring about some strange things in this town.

But someone runs her off the road while the alpha is in the back of her patrol car, and from that point on, it looks like she may be the next victim.

It's a quick read and I enjoyed it. The sexy times are steamy and the suspense keeps you flipping pages as quickly as you can.

As I said, grab it while it's free!

I am so glad that this basically amounted to an e-book, because it was far too ridiculous for my taste. It was entirely uneventful and far too dramatic for its own good.

Ava was a bland character who was running from a past we didn't get to witness. She was a girl afraid to let herself be happy, choosing instead to be alone and blah blah blah.

Julian was a possessive werewolf determined to keep Ava by his side for all of eternity. He was protective, bossy, and loyal to Ava even when she accused him of murder.

Overall, the two would have made an interesting pair, had the book been allowed to continue, or even been made longer. I wish I could have read about their first meeting together and known more about their history beyond the fact that they'd had a one-night-stand and then were over, with each of them left to stare longingly at each other from a distance.

I would not recommend this to anyone, even though it would kill only an hour of your time. It just wasn't worth the effort wasted.

As far as paranormal romance goes, "A Bit Of Bite" is packed with bite despite being barely a couple of pages. Set right in the middle of action where Ava, the sheriff of a town with its own population of supernatural is troubled by the serial cases of murder which implicated the alpha werewolf of the town, Julian, the werewolf she had a one night stand before and who Ava holding out flame for him despite everything.

Due to the length, it doesn't provide a good medium for an overall character development as the romance have already started off-book and both of them are just sorting out their feelings with each other.By mixing light romance with a thriller in the midst of danger, so far the short story is enjoyable as a light reading.

Already I was checking up the author's work especially her werewolves and vampire series. As far as kindle freebies go, this is one quality reading and a great introduction to the author's work.

i have had this one for ages. but i had never got around to reading it.... now i completely regret waiting so long to read it...isn't that always the way!
Sheriff Ava Dushaine is trying to stop the murders in her town of crossroads. the finger is pointed on the local werewolf alpha, Julian Kasey. who just happens to be Ava’s ex-lover.(possible one night stand i think). but she still finds herself attracted to him.
Anyway Ava tries to get things sorted before a war is started between the Vampires and the Werewolves. then a series of "accidents" happen and julian is always near. is he the cause? or is he protecting her like he said? which means there is a bigger issue.

this book has a bit of romance a bit of sexy obsessive werewolf and a dash of mystery. as well as a smattering of Action.
i really enjoyed this and i'm now going to find other books with Ava and Julian in them.

I have a tendency to like Cynthia Eden's werewolves. She makes them so deliciously hot blooded that I just can't resist them. This story is no exception. Julian has his stalking skills down and it's Ava in his sights.

Despite its length, it's nicely dark (oh, noes, vampires!) and the characters have the sort of tangled relationship that I enjoy. You can run, Ava, but you can't hide from an Alpha who's hell bent on claiming you for his own.

GOOD: The characteristics of a 3 star book include: interesting characters, a decent storyline, and unique story elements; there was something about the story that I didn’t completely connect with; the book is a solid read. I would recommend it to a friend.
My Thoughts:
Good short story that packed a bit of a punch. I would have loved it had it been a full length novel or even a longer novella so that more information was provided about the characters. Billy's otherness was mentioned and then....boom (literally)...that trail ended. But it was a good read with bite.
