Immortal Symphony: Overture #2

Overture: Life of the Party

Rate this book
You think you know the story of Dorian Gray, but you're wrong. The real story didn't end the way Oscar Wilde penned; in fact, it hasn't ended at all. The ageless beauty of Dorian Gray walks now in our world of cellphones and lattes and internet porn. His latest conquest is Gabriel Lawrence, a paranormal investigator with a secret or two of his own. But the trouble with a life as long as Dorian's is that the skeletons are threatening to overrun the closet... and not all of them want to stay dead.

Season 1
Overture introduces Gabriel to the truth of a world he had only suspected, where ghost hunting is the least of his worries. And at the heart of it all is the mysterious and fascinating Dorian Gray, as though he'd stepped out of the pages of the book bearing his name. But if he has, he hasn't come through alone. And this figure from a past Dorian had though long behind him bears a grudge nurtured for a hundred years and intends to tear down everything Dorian has built, a piece at a time.

Episode 2: Life of the Party
Gabriel's first glimpse into Dorian's lifestyle was only the beginning, and now he finds himself tumbling further down the rabbit hole. Dorian's birthday party introduces Gabriel to some of Dorian's friends, all as free-spirited and debauched as Dorian himself. Through them, he learns that he isn't the first that Dorian has drawn into his web this way, not even the hundred-and-first. And yet somehow, all of Gabriel's concerns instantly seem strangely inconsequential at Dorian's slightest touch, fueling Michael's fears that there is so much more to Dorian than they could guess.

I was both excited and a little wary of reading "Life of the Party." This is the second "episode" in the serialized story -- about a modern day Dorian Gray. He's a man whose mysterious powers and long life have given him an extreme confidence and at this point in the story, I might say arrogance. He's a sexual creature to the point of extreme debauchery, which Gabriel soon finds out when he attends Dorian's birthday party, which is pretty much a thinly veiled excuse for an orgy. Every gathering is an excuse for an orgy when Dorian is around! :)

This second story does a pretty good job of extending and strengthening those things which stood out in the first story. Gabriel is suspicious of Dorian and who he really is, but as his proximity to Dorian fluctuations so does his reaction to him, like a drug. When Dorian is near Gabriel forgets himself and is overcome with lust enough to distract from his conscience, or better named, his brother and ghost Michael. The two brothers have an interesting dynamic when we first meet them in the first story. Michael does indeed act as Gabriel's conscience for the most part, but with his own personality and also wary attentiveness that Gabriel not succumb to the same pitfalls in life that he did before his untimely death. While Gabriel loves his brother, you can see that he often resents him as well. Or, he is at least uncomfortable with his presence. This complicated dynamic becomes even further strained in this story. Michael is already naturally suspicious of Dorian, who he can't figure out on a spiritual level. But seeing Dorian's effect on Gabriel alarms Michael further in Life of the Party. Dorian's gift of spreading lust affects Gabriel so strongly in this story that he becomes a libidinous creature that shocks him afterward. It's a kind of dubious violation that worries Gabriel.

That realization and ultimate agreement with his brother about his suspicions causes a bit of a change in Gabriel that sets a new tone and a new direction going into the third story. I have a feeling that in the next story Gabriel is going to be a bit more cautious and a bit more insistent that he find out Dorian's secrets.

For the most part this story carried on the same as the story before it. Though we get to see a bit of a different setting and the characters are fleshed out a bit more, there's not a huge change yet in the character dynamics, though as I said, this story seems to be setting the stage for some kind of upcoming change. Of course, there are still orgies aplenty :)

I'm still really enjoying this serial and looking forward to the coming stories. I have to admit that this story started to edge closer to the line in my comfort zone, but that made this story all the more exciting for me. I never quite felt that it was in danger of going too far for me (it would have to be very, very far!), but there was a bit of a discordant mood in this story that felt as if it was perfectly set to make the reader feel Gabriel's warring excitement and unease with the sex party and his part in it.

Part 3 of Immortal Symphony: Overture, "Ghost in the Closet", is out now. Part 4, "Shadow from the Past", is to be released on May 10.

Episode 2, Life of the Party, of the Immortal Symphony serial is intense and slightly uncomfortable. I had a hard time enjoying the story, since it’s mostly one extended orgy scene, as it just felt wrong for the main character Gabriel. I didn’t feel like he had any comprehension what he was doing and furthermore, he kind of came off pretty innocent, naïve, and frankly stupid. I didn’t particularly like his character or his choices and thus I didn’t like this episode. It’s likely to be a highly personal choice I realize and I’m curious enough about the story to continue on even if I’m left feeling unsettled after this offering.

Picking up where the last story left off, Gabriel arrives in Scotland to be Dorian’s plaything. Despite Michael’s (Gabriel’s dead ghostly twin) very real and logical objections, Gabriel is determined to think of nothing but sex for as long as it lasts. Right from the start I had some problems with Gabriel’s character. In the first episode we’re told he’s survived the death of his twin, which is sure to be a traumatic experience, and that he’s traveled the world surviving pretty well with his supernatural pursuits. To me, this would give Gabriel a certain level of sophistication and world awareness. If he’s managed to eke out a living, and attend college, wherever he goes and not end up a statistic somewhere, he has to be somewhat intelligent and capable. Yet he ignores Michael’s very sensible objections for no reason except to get laid. Some of this is easy to ignore and forgive, but as the story goes on Gabriel’s actions seem in contradiction.

First Gabriel mentions several times that he’s not had many lovers, which fits with the new naïve persona that’s shown here, but Gabriel doesn’t really put up much argument against Dorian’s wild ways. He doesn’t come across as someone that would like that kind of partying at all, so why does he submit so easily? Gabriel seems almost as spineless and influenced as any other random lover Dorian takes, which negates any “special” quality Gabriel is supposed to have. Gabriel seems just as lost under Dorian’s power as anyone, going so far as to ignore his own intelligence and comfort levels. I also think this isn’t just my random reaction as the story goes so far as to acknowledge Gabriel’s actions as “too stupid to live.” So I’m left wondering why I should care about Gabriel as a character when he’s contradictory and not that bright.

The main thrust of the story this time is all about Gabriel and his addiction to Dorian, going pretty far. I’m guessing the story is going to have Gabriel see something in Dorian no one else has seen and that makes him different but really it doesn’t fit either personality so far. It feels forced given Gabriel’s almost slave-like acceptance. I’m very curious to see how Gabriel reacts to the events that happened. I think that will make or break this serial for me. I love the concept of it but so far Gabriel’s turned me off. But again it’s a personal reaction that not everyone may have. I can still easily recommend this as it’s engaging, well written and different from almost everything else. It’s more than edgy and I can definitely appreciate that. I’d skim through the first book just so you know where things are at but this is pretty independent of the last one so far.

In episode two of the Immortal Symphony serial, Gabriel Lawrence has made the decision to join the beautiful, yet mysterious, Dorian Gray at his Scotland estate against the advice of his twin, Michael – who also happens to be a ghost. Gabriel is determined to live it up until Dorian gets tired of him. The attraction between Gabriel and Dorian continues to grow as they spend more time together.

While Michael attempts to warn Gabe away from Dorian, Gabe becomes more and more determined to stay and find any way to keep Dorian happy. As Dorian’s world opens up before Gabriel’s eyes, Gabe has to decide whether to endure it and continue to make Dorian happy, or to listen to his brother and run from it.

Where the first episode gave us glimpses of both Gabriel and Dorian’s points of view, this episode is solely in Gabriel’s. His character is continuing to develop. I found Gabriel to be very innocent and naïve in ways. I can’t say that he’s completely naïve, but when it comes to Dorian he definitely has on rose-colored glasses. I look forward to him waking up from the sex haze. I want to see him really come out of his shell – not in an overtly sexual way, but personality-wise. I think mostly I look forward to the eye-opening revelation about Dorian’s true identity, and maybe Michael’s chance to say “I told you so.”

I’m still hoping for the story behind Michael’s death and the reason he’s attached to Gabe. But I really like Michael’s level head and his determination to save Gabe from himself. I have a feeling that Michael is going to be a big part of this story and I look forward to watching his character progress.

As it is the second episode, the story is still developing. This episode is sexy, beyond sexy. Like, fan yourself hot. Wow, the scenes in this episode are erotic and kinky and completely provocative. This time we get a little glimpse into Dorian’s sensual world – the hedonistic pleasures and debauchery, the drugs and alcohol. It’s enough to make me a little uncomfortable, but also keep me interested. I can definitely see some reasons for jealousy and resentment in the making.

There’s so much I look forward to in this story. I like that this serial has an edge. It’s a new and different twist on a classic. As I said before, I love the play off of The Portrait of Dorian Gray. I’m looking forward to what’s to come of this serial. But I will remain patient…ish for the next episode.

Caveat: Open relationships, orgy and underage encounters, drug use.

You’re invited to a lavish orgy.

So far this serial has had hot m/m sexiness, m/f/m ménage, and now a very exclusive orgy. Dorian doesn’t do things halfway.

THE CHARACTERS

Gabriel Lawrence - Young, fresh, amorous. Naive???

Michael Lawrence - Gabriel’s ethereal brother…and conscience???

Dorian Gray - Still beautiful, flawed and completely debauched…and yet there’s something….???

He might have gotten jealous if Dorian hadn't straightened with an amused chuckle and pulled him closer. It drew everyone's attention to him, and being in the spotlight in front of such a gorgeous group made him want to retreat. There was nowhere to hide, however, and Dorian grinned at the group. "I would like you all to meet Gabriel. [...]
"Gabriel? Like the angel?"

THE STORY

Honestly, there isn’t much forward movement in this episode, except to open Gabriel’s eyes to everything Dorian has to offer. Gabriel arrives at Dorian’s sumptuous estate and is instantly swept into a world of opulence and excess. While Gabe just wants to enjoy the fantasy; Michael is in desperately trying to get Gabe back to reality.

Gabriel is presented at a “coming out” party of sorts. He is indeed the “Life of the Party.”

THE WRITING

The authors are still developing the plot so it isn’t clear yet what’s lying underneath the surface. I think the pacing is intentional and clever, but we’ll need to see some enlightening reveals soon.

A "Live Your Life, Buy The Book" Review

Gabriel makes his way to Scotland to be with Dorian. He wants to spend time with the man. He tells himself he’s not deluding himself, it’s just a fling for a few weeks and he’ll get back to his regularly scheduled and fairly depressing life once it’s over. Gabriel just wants to make the fun decision for once. Michael really doesn’t want Gabriel doing this. Michael can do nothing but watch Gabriel make what he believes is the wrong choice. Once in Scotland, and Dorian’s home, Michael is still after Gabriel to leave. Michael can see that Dorian isn’t your average human. Add to it Dorian makes no bones the big birthday party he’s planning is his 182nd birthday party. So Gabriel goes to the party, meets Dorian’s friends, and proceeds to get drunk, use drugs, and have public and unprotected sex.

Dorian is actively using a depraved lifestyle to not deal with his painful memories. He’s not happy. The people with whom he parties are sycophants and moochers. It’s not living. Gabriel can see this is not for him but can’t control himself once Dorian touches him. Michael is the superego warning Gabriel of all the bad he’s doing. Or at least I’m hoping that’s what is happening with this story. It could just be erotica with a bit of a plot. That’s okay, but not what I’m hoping for in this story.

The Romance Review

Hedonist haven, thy location is Dorian's mansion!

Gabriel Lawrence is without money or a job. At this point, he needs a break from the supernatural hunting gig. He gives in to his desire, accepts Dorian's open invitation and shows up at Dorian's home. The place is extravagant and filled with luxuries Gabe can only dream about tasting, feeling and experiencing.

While Gabe is enjoying this decadent lifestyle, his twin, Michael is insistent Dorian is trouble. Michael believes Dorian is hatching some nefarious plan with Gabe as the centerpiece. This tension between the brothers doesn't look good for their partnership. Without their bond, their lives could be at risk.

The sex in this story is hot. When S.L. Armstrong and K. Piet come together, their m/m sex scenes can cause a reader to spontaneously combust. The orgy complete with catty ex-lovers and twink temptations is a debauchery not to be missed. This second installment in this serial story reveals more about both Gabe and Dorian. Still, there are unanswered questions which I hope to be forthcoming in the next installment. This teaser tale is recommended for m/m readers who enjoy supernatural erotica.

Hmm...it's still to early to tell much of anything.

Gabe's TSTL impression does start to get a little annoying...as in, a lot annoying.

I had a completely different impression of him based on the blurb and the cover image...

And, well...I'm still waiting for (more of) the Dorian-angst *shrug (lol).

Unfortunately, the most interesting character in Overture: Life of the Party is Michael, who is dead. Gabriel, Michael's living twin, seems much stupider than in the previous book, which was a disappointment. Nonetheless, I am looking forward to the next in this series.
