A condemned man who has only one week to live contacts Sunil Chakravarty, the protagonist of the Sunil series and chief reporter of the popular daily Blast.
Sunil has to sift through the facts and unearth the truth to save the life of an innocent man. The problem is, the evidence is stacked against the accused and Sunil has barely 6 days to unmask the real murderer.
Unfortunately its impossible to say anything more without letting a cat or two out of the bag. Written in 1979, Meena Murder case is a brilliant work of detective fiction liberally sprinkled with surprises and twists turning up at the least expected places.
Having read countless works of detective fiction, I can say with little hesitation that this was the most spellbinding one I have read to date. There's hardly a superflous line in the novel. From the first page to the last, never once does the pace slacken. True to style, Surender Mohan Pathak keeps the reader guessing until the very end.
I would have no hesitation in recommending this novel to anyone who enjoys detective fiction. Assuredly the Hindi used is so simple that even a person with limited knowledge of the language can easily follow it.

Can Sunil save a death row convict from gallows? He has only 5 more days to prove his innocence.
It is a fast paced race against time. A very enjoyable murder mystery.
“मैने किसी पत्रकार को नहीं बुलाया है, एक विशेष पत्रकार को बुलाया है । मैंने सुनील कुमार चक्रवर्ती को बुलाया है ।” “आप मुझे जरूरत से ज्यादा अहमियत दे रहे हैं ।”
“ऐसी बात नहीं है । मिस्टर सुनील, मैं जानता हूं आपने हमेशा ऐसे लोगों की मदद की है जो सताए गए हैं, जिन पर जुल्म हुए हैं, जो बेगुनाह फंसाए गए हैं, जिनकी बात पर दुनिया में किसी ने विश्वास नहीं किया - न कानून ने, न पुलिस ने, न जनता ने, न उनके सगे-सम्बन्धियों ने । मिस्टर सुनील अगर मैं गुनहगार होता तो मैं आज की हालत में पहुंचने से बहुत पहले प्रभावशाली लोगों से सम्पर्क स्थापित करता, उन बड़े बड़े वकीलों से सम्मर्क स्थापित करता जो लाखों रुपए की फीस के बदले में मुजरिम को भी बरी करा लेते हैं, ऐसे पुलिस अधिकारियों के पास जाता जो अपराधी के हक में केस का हुलिया बदल देते हैं, ऐसे जजों से सम्पर्क स्थापित करता जो रिश्वत लेकर मुकद्दमे का फैसला गुनहगार के हक में कर देते हैं, ऐसे राजनैतिक नेताओं के पास जाता जिनकी झोलियां चन्दों से भरकर मैं अपना हर गुनाह माफ करवा सकता था । लेकिन मैंने ऐसा नहीं किया । कोई मामूली और साधनहीन इंसान न होने के बावजूद मैंने ऐसा नहीं किया । क्योंकि मैं बेगुनाह था और मैं समझता था कि बेगुनाह आदमी को सजा नहीं हो सकती लेकिन हमारे समाज ने, हमारी पुलिस ने, हमारे कानून ने मेरा भरम तोड़ दिया । मैं बेगुनाह मारा जा रहा हूं मिस्टर सुनील ! मैं ईश्वर की सौगंन्ध खाकर कहता हूं कि मैंने अपनी बीवी का कत्ल नहीं किया । जिस हालत में इस वक्त मैं हूं उसमें कोई बड़ा वकील मेरी मदद नहीं कर सकता । कानून अपना काम कर चुका है । इन्साफ हो चुका है । मुझे फांसी की सजा सुनाई जा चुकी । अब मैं सिर्फ उस घड़ी का इन्तजार कर रहा हूं जिसमें मुझे कानूनी तौर पर इस संसार से रुखसत किया जाना है । ऐसे में अगर मेरी कोई मदद कर सकता है तो वह आप हैं ।”

I read this book after about 20 years, and it's still fresh and equally thrilling and suspenseful as before. It's mystery is well set and well maintained and clues are given gradually and mudded with confusion. I only remember one aspect of the mystery, and nothing else. It was fun to solve this mystery once again, and I managed to do it along with Sunil.
As for the StoryTel audiobook, it's alright, better than Dial 100, but only a little. There Trilok screwed up all the narration experience, Parvez Gauhar did a little better job here. Where Trilok read in dry and monotonous voice, Parvez read with little emotions. However he read it as if narrating a documentary or DD National's evening news. Where the script said Sunil spoke in high pitch and loud voice, his voice was calm, when another character said "No!" in surprise and disbelief, Parvez spoke as if he was answering a question in negation. StoryTel need to hire voice artists with voice acting, or they'll never catch up with Audible, even with so much of regional content.
All in all I recommend the book to all SMP and whodunit lovers, but not the audiobook.

A most Amazing book....the book that simply made a super mystery writer out of Pathak sahab. The best Sunil book?? Maybe.
