THOSE WE PROTECT!!
Kalin’s handless combo Type Zero has Jack backed into a corner! However, the King just might have a secret plan for victory. Meanwhile, the Skeleton Knight appears and tells Yusei that Sect is in the aerial fortress beyond the Duel Gate! Can Yusei’s loyalty overcome Sect’s thirst for power and save Sect from the Skeleton Knight?
As we reach the halfway point in 5D's; revelations are abound as we learn the truth behind the Grand Prix, the goal of the Skeleton Knight, and who the real enemies are for Yusei and co. Vol. 5 opens up with King Jack and Kalin's duel ending. I enjoy their backstory together, adding a layer to their interactions. A bulk of this volume is Yusei's rematch with the twins Leo and Luna. We see Luna duel more this time around and Yusei is intent on using his new Stardust Spark Dragon to save them from the "dark miasma." We also see a bit of what the other contestants are up to; including Crow trying to get his own duel dragon card. The ending chapter has quite a twist as well.
Hikokubo has written the 5D's characters well and the mythos of this series is engaging. Sato's art brings his ideas to life in a way that matches the fast paced tone of turbo duels perfectly. As this series continues, the duo prove that they are able to tell their own version of this story that will keep readers enthralled.
I think Leo and Luna are handled much better here then in the anime as in the anime they were only really there to fill in the role as the cute kids. As aside from maybe a few duels they do not do much except cheer on the others. But here they are something Yusei has to overcome and it is nice they kept in Leo's Over protectiveness of Luna and keeping in that Luna is the better duelists. They also play on that they are children and Luna does see the world as if it was a fairy tale.
The beginning of the volume concludes the duel between Kalin and Jack, while giving a flashback to tell more about their past. Yusei faces off against the twins again, only this time, it seems to be more against Luna, while before it was more against Leo. Cue plenty of d'aww moments. Meanwhile, Crow goes to a special obelisk in order to find a way to make it into the next round. There, he comes face-to-face with a shadow version of himself, whom he must defeat to receive the(not)black winged dragon. Starting with this volume, each chapter has 27 pages, which made the whole volume feel better paced (which hasn't been a problem in previous volumes, but still) and longer, a definite plus.
3.5* ------------------------- I wasn't really impressed with this volume. I did enjoy the storyline about Luna being stuck in her storybook world, and Yusei's dragon rescuing her from it. Sad thing is....That's pretty much ALL I liked at all about this volume.
Masih bingung gimana caranya Kiryu bisa punya 6 kartu di graveyard (Infernity General, Pawn, Bishop, Queen, Void Ogre Dragon, sama Zero Gate of the Void), padahal dia cuma buang 5 kartu pakai Contract with the Void. Atau sebenarnya dia panggil Void Ogre Dragon dari deck? Jadi bingung
