Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.

Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.

This is a review of the entire series.

Once upon a time, the spirit of an evil Nine Tailed Fox wreaked havoc on Konohagakure; the Village Hidden in the Leaves, killing hundreds of honorable ninja in the skirmish and leaving many children without homes or parents. The Fourth Hokage (leader of the village) unleashes a forbidden jutsu (magic spell/ninja ability) to seal the spirit of the evil fox into the body of a newborn baby named Naruto at the cost of his own life. He did this in the hopes that the boy could one day learn to master the power of the demonic spirit and use it to protect the village and become a great hero of the people.

Unknown to the citizens of the Leaf, the Nine Tailed Fox was being controlled by an even more powerful adversary, a legendary rogue ninja that plans to wage war against the entire world from the shadows. The identity of the mysterious ninja that attacked the Leaf Village using the Nine Tails died with the Fourth Hokage, and he used what remained of his life to gift Naruto with the power of one day being able to stop this evil ninja and a clan of outlawed S-rank criminals called the Akatsuki from committing mass genocide against the many hidden villages and clans of the world.

Because of the evil spirit sealed inside him, Naruto grew up hated by the other children of the village because they believe him and the Nine Tails to be one and the same. They believe he’s a ticking time bomb waiting to go off, waiting for the perfect moment to kill them all just like the Nine Tails killed their parents and families. Shunned, dehumanized and treated like dirt, Naruto vows to become the greatest hokage the world has ever seen so that he can receive the love and acknowledgement he never got as a child.

On top of the Nine Tails power and the will to never quit, Naruto also possesses the uncanny ability to turn everyone he meets into a potential comrade. He brings out the best in his peers and tries his hardest to make his enemies see the errors of their ways. He disobeys the rules and ignores cultural traditions to try and make changes to the world and break the eternal cycle of war and hatred through his own methods. His determination is infectious to friend and foe alike. He earns himself the respect he deserves by overcoming one impossible obstacle at a time.

Naruto encounters many fascinating and terrifying ninja over the course of his journey to become hokage. Among them are Sasuke Uchiha, Naruto’s best friend and rival who is driven by the vengeful lust to murder his elder brother after he wiped out their own clan in cold blood. Sasuke warms up to Naruto, but his hatred and trauma are dangerous forces that threaten to break his moral code as a ninja and destroy his reputation among his peers.

Kakashi Hatake is a notorious copycat ninja that survived one of the most brutal and devastating wars in history as well as the Nine Tails attack on the Leaf Village. He becomes Naruto and Sasuke’s mentor and teaches them a great number of valuable lessons about surviving in the dangerous world of rogue ninja, bloodthirsty assassins and clans ruled by corruption.

Jiraiya is a perverted yet wise sage who taught the Fourth Hokage everything he knew and he’s regarded as a god among shinobi that’s famous for his heroic actions in the second great ninja war. He takes an interest in Naruto and raises him as a father figure to carry on the legacy of the Fourth Hokage to prepare him for the many dangerous people that want to use his power for their own nefarious purposes.

The Akatsuki is one such group of wicked ninja. Among them are Sasuke’s brother Itachi who murdered his clan and possesses many dangerous techniques involving illusions, psychological torture and elemental manipulation. Sasori who controls poisonous puppets with magical threads, Orochimaru who mastered the forbidden arts of reanimation and quasi-immortality, Deidara who fights from afar using detonating clay and many other deadly foes.

The entire series chronicles Naruto and his fellow ninja comrades growing through countless trials and tragedies. There are hundreds of unique jutsus, clans, and techniques which lead to some very intense, creative and strategic battles between skilled ninja with diverse abilities that don’t always match up evenly. There are clan based abilities such as the Aburame clan’s ability to control insects, the Yamanaka clan’s ability to jump into other people’s minds and control their bodies and the Inuzuka clan’s ability to bond with wolves that learn to mimic their master’s battle skills. Then there’s ocular genetic abilities such as the sharingan which allows the user to create psychological illusions, copy their enemy’s abilities and manipulate elemental energy. The byakugan allows the user to read their enemies vital points and detect their spiritual energy from faraway. The rinnegan grants control over space and gravity and so on.

On top of having countless unique abilities, nearly every character has a tragic backstory that makes them sympathetic and relatable, even the nastiest of the villains have well-explored reasons for following the paths they do and becoming the way they are. One of my favorite aspects of the series is how well it explores the physical, emotional and psychological effects war can have on society and culture as well as the survivors and future generations that are forced to live in them. How it breeds racism and cultural disputes, how it inspires hatred in orphaned children and war veterans robbed of their homes toward foreign nations, as well as how this eventually leads to further death, war, poverty and destruction. Learning to forgive the ones you hate to prevent further conflict and damaging the world for future generations even further is a major theme throughout the story.

Being a massive 700 chapter series, it’s not too surprising that there’s some plot holes and consistency issues. A rule might be stated regarding the requirements and usage of a certain jutsu or ability only for that rule to be repeatedly broken 400 chapters later. Sometimes the characters and rules contradict themselves, sometimes the chronology of certain events and historical facts don’t match up perfectly, the lore and general backstory go through several retcons that change the philosophy and power scaling of the characters and the scope of world-building; the final arc especially drags on and breaks a lot of the logic and rules that the story spent the whole series setting up, etc...

Naruto’s far from perfect, but I remember it very fondly for being one of the first series that introduced me to things like manga and Japanese entertainment in general. It was one of those childhood classics like Dragon Ball, Inuyasha, Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin. The series grew up with me and I can’t help but feel grateful to it for introducing me to hundreds of other franchises that I’m still a huge fan of to this day and I continue to find many new ones on the regular. Naruto's journey from a clownish, disrespected outcast into a talented, well-loved and admired hero is a memorable one.

"you taught me the importance of believing in myself"

oh we are so back, it's crazy how well Kishimoto is able to balance such emotional depth with super cool action scenes and even add in a little humor here and there (even though that is becoming less and less common as things become more tense), but it makes for such an enjoyable time and I'm not ready for what I know is coming next

Damn, I was on such a good pace reading this manga, only for it to end up taking me two weeks to read this whole omnibus. This was basically in three sittings; one per volume collected here. I guess the "problem" is I've not only gotten back into more serious reading of actual prose fiction, but have also been taking up too much of my free-time getting back into film. Manga bingeing is suffering a setback, as is truly for nightly tokusatsu TV....

Anyway, Kishimoto continues to do a decent job structuring the tankobon releases. Each of the three volumes here have their own Big Thing going on: the climax of the Jiraiya/Tsunade/Orochimaru battle; the lead-in to the abduction of Sasuke by the Sound Four; and the battle against Jirobo.

As I've been trying to do lately, I'll write about the Search for Tsunade Arc as a whole. Yeah... pretty good. Mostly because Tsunade is very important for my peepee, historically. Actually, I hadn't read or watched the series by the time she was introduced to Americans, so it's really just a prior interest in the series + big-boobie character design that appealed to me when I was, like, thirteen. I might have had a different opinion if I'd known she was middle-aged when I was that young. It's maybe important to mention I'd learned of Tsunade quite some time before I'd ever beaten off (which would have been the summer I turned fourteen), around which time I'd decided something like "I'm too old to beat off to drawings." I guess a really important thing is that Tsunade vaguely reminded me of my eighth grade English teacher, Ms. Browning, who was much younger (I think like twenty-five-ish?), and also kinda THICCer - but, like, before that was a "thing." It's basically just the boobs and blonde hair, which is an extremely superficial comparison to make, but the point is the timing. I also like Shizune.

Oh, shit. The arc. Okay, okay, yeah. So, really, kinda same deal as Konoha Crush: I mostly have mixed feelings concerning how sharply divided the arc is between two major Events or antagonist-sets. In Konoha Crush, you had Orochimaru and the Hokage zombies in one half, and Shukaku on the other. Here, you have Itachi and Kisame, then Orochimaru and Kabuto again. In Konoha Crush, the segments were more deeply intertwined; Orochimaru's plan is to fuck shit up with Shukaku while he kills Sarutobi. In Search for Tsunade... the Akatsuki don't really have anything to do with Orochimaru trying to scam Tsunade so he could keep Konoha weak enough to Crush™ again. Konoha Crush really started a thing where (I think I mentioned this before?) Kishimoto gained a sense of invincibility, that he was free to write without restriction, knowing his work is popular enough to not get canceled, so he's setting up new plot-points to be resolved much later in the future. Sarutobi is defeated, but Konoha will have like three(?) Hokage come in before the end of the manga. Orochimaru himself will stick around for a good while yet, and "final fights" against him and Kabuto are a long way off. Itachi and Kisame come in expressly to set up a major chunk of the post-timeskip story, which will be kinda technically entirely about battling the Akatsuki. Between Shukaku and now Itachi's thing about looking for Naruto, the Ten Tails plotline is being set up, which is a big part of the greater Akatsuki story, as well as how it will bleed into something else. So it's hard to really say Konoha Crush or Search for Tsunade are as good as Land of Waves or Chūnin Exams because of how much they rely on future payoff. But also they are both inherently less Nostalgic to me. If I had to say one arc is better than the other, I might go with Search for Tsunade. Yes, partly because of Tsunade's boobs. But also because of Naruto's growth as he learns the Rasengan, and the increased scale of high-tier ninja battles in the All Monsters Attack shit going on with the Sannin summons. I also just plainly think Orochimaru and Kabuto are pretty cool, so the fact that we see them do more than just hide behind zombie puppets puts this a little higher above their involvement in the previous arc.

I knew the basic skeleton of the pre-timeskip story from Ultimate Ninja 3 on PS2, but I was unaware the Sasuke Retrieval Arc would last so long. It starts in Volume 20, and will continue I guess to 27, unless 27 is entirely Kakashi's backstory. This would make it probably the longest arc in this chunk of the series? The Chūnin Exams are pretty long as well, but there's a gray area blurring the end of the Exam and the start of Konoha Crush, so it's probably easier to call Sasuke Retrieval the longest. I don't know. To my knowledge, this arc is mostly just going to be a Gold Saints reprise, by which I mean we're just gonna have each Konoha boy fight each Otonin as we go on, with each kid showing off the fruits of his training - but I know there will be slight "twists" as well, when the boys are joined by in due time.

Choji has never really had much time to shine before now. He's mostly just been subject to fat jokes, and his only technique until now has been Human Juggernaut. With this volume, he gains Gear Third (wait, has that happened in One Piece yet? Did Kishimoto do it before Oda?), Super Expansion (though iirc we saw his father do it already), and... whatever his butterfly form is called - it's not named here yet, and I don't remember what the games called it. The buildup to Choji's transformation is a very tropey little flashback about befriending Shikamaru and learning to gain confidence in himself, but it's effective nonetheless - my eyes were misty with tears of HYPE...!!!

Not my favourite so far but still quite great. We get some really great insight regarding Choji's character. Sasuke makes some terrible decisions as he leaves Konohagakure with the Sound ninja 4 and Tsunade finally becomes the fifth Hokage. We learn that Rock Lee will never be as great a ninja as he once was unless he allows Tsunade to perform an operation on him which might kill him and once again, Sakura is hardly mentioned except for her brief discussion with Sasuke as she was trying to convince him to stay and not make such a terrible decision and partner up with Orochimaru. I am uncertain as to why Sasuke had to do certain things but I'd bet it's for him to get closer to Itachi and finally get his revenge. I am really enjoying how Shikamaru is getting a lot of attention which he completely deserves in my opinion and is made the leader of a great team consisting of Choji, Neji, Naruto, Kiba and Akamaru and himself. Am looking forward to see how the leaf ninja will defeat the sound ninja as things are looking rather bleak right now... I believe that the sand ninja will once again join forces with leaf in the next book!

In the aftermath of the previous battle, we have our new hokage, and now things are settling down. We see the current situation and standing of each character, which then leads to Sasuke and his obvious path towards a dark route. It's a reletively solid three volumes, but definitely serves and builds up what I'm guessing is the next major arc. Worth reading.

Naurto and his friends never get a break, Orochimaru looses control of his arms and Konohagakure is in more trouble than ever. They train hard and fight for their lives. Another amazing manga collection by Kishimoto. You get hooked and read it smoothly til the end.

The three-way battle between the snake, toad and slug was great, as was Tsunade becoming the 5th Hokage. I continue to love the bond between Guy and Lee, and I loved seeing the friendship between Shikamaru (loved that he was the only one promoted and the mission shows why) and Choji.

I don't like that Sasuke went with those people because he was told by everyone that this revenge was going to take him nowhere. Looks like he will have to learn the hard way. Sakura is starting to grow on me a little bit, but my favourite characters are still Naruto, Garra, Shikamaru, and Kabuto

This volume is a decisive moment for the overall storyline and really hits you in the feels.

Right off the bat, we are thrown into an action pack battle that showcases some really powerful characters in this world. Naruto continues to be a badass character that will stop at nothing to protect his friends and those he cares about, he is a great protagonist. I am honestly obsessed with Tsunade, she is a great character and her relationship with Naruto is amazing and I hope we see more of it, she will be a great leader. Orochimaru is a great villain that even while weakened should be feared, creepy dude.

The Rock Lee storyline this volume was a sad one, I cannot lie and say I did not feel bad and just wanted him to be happy. The pathos Kishimoto achieved with that character was outstanding.

Sasuke making that switch from a hero to a potential villain was a great one. The storyline needed that extra factor to really set up more drama and what would be a better way than turning the protagonist's team member into a villain. I love that and it makes a lot of sense with the character of Sasuke and how he has been written. This also might be the first time Sakura was likable to me, she finally felt like a good character.

The plot is getting quite good as we see this special mission begin with all these characters in the forefront. I like how the writer got all these characters to go on this big important mission that has stakes and for sure has a lot of cool action. Finally, Choji gets his chance to shine!

I can't wait to see what our troublemaking group does next.

This omnibus covers two story arcs. It finishes up the Tsunade arc and starts the final arc of the Naruto genin era.

While it is another great volume I do think the action and emotional impact of the Sasuke arc translates better on the anime them it does here.

The genin we've come to know are now heading off on a mission to recover a fellow ninja that most of them don't even like. Still they do it and risk their lives for it.

For me this final arc before the time skip shows what kind of threats they will be up against in the future and really shows off how each of them have grown and developed since they first appeared.

Another great addition to the series.

Naruto es excelente en su historia completa, hay arcos muy buenos, excelentes y el giros impresionantes. Definitivamente leerlo en su cúspide de atención a la trama es mucho mejor que tener la paciencia de soportarse los episodios relleno del Anime.
