In a savage world ruled by the pursuit of the most delicious foods, it's either eat or be eaten! While searching for the tastiest foods imaginable, Gourmet Hunter Toriko travels the world with his bottomless stomach, facing every beast in his way.
While Komatsu is on an intense fishing expedition with Toriko and Sunny, Gourmet Corp. is forcibly “recruiting” the world’s best chefs to join their nefarious organization. On their list is Livebearer, the crooked chef of Gourmet Casino and keeper of the next food on Toriko’s training list! Can Toriko and his friends survive in the jungle of corruption and crime known as Gourmet Casino?
After the training adventure with Sani, Toriko and Komatsu jump right into another ingredient, this time with Coco.
But there were two interleaved interludes. One in which Toriko and Coco went off to hunt down IGO president's full course menu ingredients. The anime actually provided more backstory to this interlude and lengthened it out a bit. The manga just wrapped it up in a single issue. Komatsu's past was revealed a bit more in the other interlude, where he meets up with a friend that he had once trained with, and then parts with an obvious prelude to a later confrontation.
Coco, Toriko, and Komatsu travel to the Jidal Kingdom to seek out the Meteor Garlic. I think this is one of my favourtie arc, as it shows a darker side of the Gourmet Age and a different kind of creativity. The villain this time is Livebearer, an underground cooking chef, whose depiction is a bit different from the anime.
Finishing up the discovery of the shiny fish (as well as the delicate way to cook them), there's also the mystery of the giant treasure chest on the cover, which was something the sensei of Toriko and his pals left for them to find out once they were older and stronger. Once it's been opened, for some reason what's inside sends out a psychic wave of "COOK ME" which chefs all over the world somehow hear. Also the bad guy organization is making moves to kidnap chefs for nefarious reasons. But enough of that, we're going to Macau! Or their version of it which really ups the insanity of the gambling, crime, and other gastronomic nonsense this series is specialized to exploit. (That ginormous ultra mega slot machine is something to laugh at because there's no way anyone other than superhuman can ever win on it) The group's winning streak gets the attention of the VIP section tho, and those games...are considerably less fun...basically any chance to gamble with human lives eh?
Really loving Toriko so far!! Great art and love the characters so far and the fighting is pretty awesome! Can’t wait to see where the story goes from here!😻💪😁❤️❤️
