The popular series about a cursed teenage boy who saves mankind one soul at a time—now in an omnibus edition!
D.Gray-man is the story of Allen Walker, who roams a fictional 19th century Earth in search of Innocence, a mysterious substance used to fight demons called akuma.
Allen questions whether he is willing to fight the Clan of Noah—after all, he signed up to kill akuma, not humans! With his left eye injured, he can no longer tell akuma from humans, making him a target for attack. Despite this weakness, he is sent by the Black Ministry to find and protect his master, General Cross.
Katsura Hoshino ((星野 桂 Hoshino Katsura) was born on April 21, 1980, in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, as the younger of fraternal twin girls and the second of three children. She drew her first manga at twenty-one. In 1998, Hoshino moved to Tokyo. She dreamed of bringing her mother to the city and was able to in 2006.
She made her debut with her comics in July 2003 with the publication of her first manga series Continue and is known for her work, D.Gray-man, which began serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump in May 2004.
A brilliant lead on from the first book my favourite part about this manga was the storyline of Suman. Suman's was the saddest story I can remember reading about. The story of a man who just wanted to see his daughter, to be with his family, but had to leave them in order to save them and when the time came he betrayed those around him just to see them one more time. I think the best part about this is that it is so real. Yes sometimes you get those brave few who can fight back and die for their friends and workers, but in general people want to live and your natural instinct is to kick in so that you can survive. Suman wanted to survive, he gave up his life to get his daughter medicine and all he wanted was to be with his family. Suman and Krory are my favourite storylines in this manga book because they are each so sad and sweet. There is a hint of realism behind their tales and the characters are very sweet deep down when you look passed the Excorcists. I think people could learn from these storylines and it is these two stories that make this a five star book/manga.
Allen's journey as an exorcist continues as Allen, Lenalee, Lavi, Bookman and Count Krory set out to find General Cross, Allen's master. This is easier said than done since the only way to find him is using Timcanpy, who can only show the general direction of Cross, he's too far away for any other contact. Allen gets killed, yet somehow survives and gets taken in by the Chinese branch of the Exorcist society. Amazing story and art, truly a must read for all fantasy manga fans.

I still really enjoy this manga but this story arc in particular has been terrible to read with my trypophobia. The effects have made me feel ill pretty much throughout, though especially towards the end, so I would say to be careful if that is something that affects you. I'm giving it four stars because I feel it would be a shame to mark it down for something that won't affect everyone, and even then maybe not to the same degree as me, but my personal rating would be two stars if I were to take that into account.
Vol. 4: Lavi and Allen's main mission here is to protect a village from a vampire, but something isn't what it seems. Some cool new characters are introduced but we're left not knowing quite where everyone stands and a major fight is about to erupt. keeps the plot and action rolling but a bit messy plotwise. (3/5)
Vol. 5: Again I'm finding the plot a bit all over the place but I'm certainly enjoying the characters in this manga. The vampire episode is finished off on the first half of this volume and has a very interesting conclusion! The second half brings back the Earl and a new charismatic bad guy then we get into some plotting that jumps around and I found hard to follow but there is some great art here and some cool disturbing images. I'm enjoying the read but it isn't a page-turner for me. I'm really glad to be reading this as a 3-in-1 as I don't know if single volumes would have held my interest as much. (3/5)
Vol. 6: I think the art in this series is amazing. Not the people, but the backgrounds, creatures and the artists use of shading is beautiful. This volume flies into action and keeps up non-stop throughout the whole book. The story revolves around a character (we don't know) but is an old friend of the others who has betrayed the Innocence and is being destroyed. Our main characters are out to save him. Then the book ends on a cliffhanger note as Allen meets up with the bad guy from the last volume, Tyki Mikk. (3/5)
I'm going to admit that I find this story somewhat hard to follow the overall plot. My 13yo loves it, though! When I asked him if he liked D.Gray-Man he said "Yes! It is so intense!" So I got him to explain to me what was the main idea going on here after I'd finished this book. LOL. Still not a page-turner for me, but this last cliffhanger has me interested and a bit freaked to get on with the next volume.
Wow. What a ride. Action, calmness, thinky thoughts - everything has been there in this Volume.
I really love the additon of Lavi. I really like his character and the way he acts and reacts with Allen.
I do wonder what's up with Lenalee though. She seems changed in some way. We will see.
I love, love, love Allen and Timcanpy.
I have to say, sometimes I have trouble seeing/recognizing what's going on in the action scenes. Sometimes I have to look and look and look in order to see where someone is and what is happening. :/ Other than that? I still love the drawing style a lot. :)
The ending of part 6? AHHHHHH!!!! Seriously?!?!? You ended with this and let people wait for the next part to find out? AHHHHHHH!!!!! I'm just glad that I already have the next Omnibus Volume here and can read further.

This books great I sat down and read the whole thing in an afternoon. Allen's still recovering from his injuries which included damage to his left eye, the one he sees Akuma with. Lavi enters the scene and changes Allen's outlook on things and "people". You never know when an Akuma will appear and wish for your demise. When wearing the uniform you're automatically targeted by all the Akuma in the area.
The Earl's making moves in which he's targeting the generals of the order and destroying their Innoncence. He's hunting for THE Innoncence to end all Innocence, literally. The Heart Innocence. Both sides are searching for it in hopes of keeping it out of the other' grasp. In targeting the generals the order sends small groups of three to find the generals and bring them to safety.
Generals are harder to find than everyone thought. Since they take orders from people higher than our beloved and completely insane science department at headquarters. They only check in every couple of months or so.
In searching for General Cross, took me a second to recognize the name, Allen's former master Allen gets stuck in a small town. The towns people are desperate for help in riding a castle of a vampire. Lavi's instructed to fetch Allen and winds up being tied into the mess Allen's in, literally. The castle belongs to Count Krory who lives with a woman by the name of Elaine.
Fighting the vampire and figuring out the mystery behind the whole thing of the vampire and castle is the main plot line for the three books. Krory' tougher than he looks and Allen and Lavi are in for some fun right down to digging up some graves. He he he.
What's really perked Allen's interest is the fact that General Cross had been to the village and had "dealt" with Krory. But if the vampire were to act up the village was to look out for men dressed in the same attire, with the black cross. Cross for saw Allen arriving at the village and so now Allen's curious as to why Cross wishes for him to help the people.
Elaine's not thrilled by the idea of exorcists in the castle searching and digging around. She even orders the Count, in a sneaky, sensual way, to deal with the exorcists. Upon finding clues around the castle and thinking back to everything that's gone down Allen and Lavi begin to wonder if Krory truly is a vampire?
The Clan of Noah's also making advances in destroying the Innoncence until they destroy the heart. Enter Tyki Mikk, a handsome man trying to live a double life and doing so successfully. Even though Allen literally beat the pants off of him in a game of cards. Tyki's very unique and his ability is mesmerizing and pure evil.
The orders taking in more and more casualties even an exorcist who was with Kanda in search of Kanda's former master. Things get pretty bad when Allen and his group boards a ship set for the location of Cross by direction of Timcanpy. We find out what happens when an accomodator betrays their Innoncence.
Moves are being made by both parties and the 6th volume ends on a drastic cliffhanger. Like all good series it makes you want to read on and on. I can't recall any cuss words but there may be a couple. Gore's a thing with this horror series so don't be surprised. I'm really loving this series!
