Many of his stories have military, particularly naval, themes, and fit into the military science fiction genre. He frequently places female leading characters in what have been traditionally male roles.
One of his most popular and enduring characters is Honor Harrington whose alliterated name is an homage to C.S. Forester's character Horatio Hornblower and her last name from a fleet doctor in Patrick O'Brian's Master and Commander . Her story, together with the "Honorverse" she inhabits, has been developed through 16 novels and six shared-universe anthologies, as of spring 2013 (other works are in production). In 2008, he donated his archive to the department of Rare Books and Special Collections at Northern Illinois University.
Many of his books are available online, either in their entirety as part of the Baen Free Library or, in the case of more recent books, in the form of sample chapters (typically the first 25-33% of the work).

Il faut bien l'avouer, plus la saga harringtonnienne avance, moins ses tomes arrivent à conserver leur séduction initiale, noyée qu'ils sont sous des considérations humanites (pouah !) politiciennes (repouah) et diplomatiques (rerepouah) sans oublier les insupportables alternoiements moraux de ces amiraux qui envoient à une mort certaine des centaines de milliers d'hommes en sachant pertinement que l'honneur ne le justifie pas.
Il ya tout ça dans ce tome mettant en scène une guerre quasiment terminée. Mais il y a en plus des politiciens mauvais, bas et veules face à une Harrington plus honorable que jamais, malgré le feu de passions qui la consument sans la brûler. Et des journalistes forcément stupides, avides du scoop montrant la petite culotte d'Harrington (j'aimerais aussi la voir, ça la détendrait sans doute), et qui plus est aux ordres du pouvoir politique.
Bref, c'est, il faut le dire, nul.
D'ailleurs, je pense que je ne vais pas lire la seconde partie de ce dixième tome, écoeuré que je suis par ce verbiage insensé et inutile, quand le lecteur de space-op basique que je suis ne demande rien d'autre que des mégatonnes d'acier se précipitant les uns vers les autres.
