On impulse, I bought an ice-cream maker over the weekend. This is the best of the three books, I got out from the library on making ice-cream. I liked the book because: the recipes have a limited number of ingredients (approx 5-7); there are metric measurements (not just ounces, quarts etc like one of the other books!); ,most recipes have a photo; it is well-laid out and easy to follow for a first time ice-cream maker with good information on how ingredients work together to make good ice-cream; recipes range from vanilla ice cream to more interesting flavours like Mango and basil granita; one of the authors is a New Zealander so there are some interesting recipes to appeal to a Kiwi/Aussie palate eg traditional rocky road ice cream, hokey pokey ice cream, chocolate lamington ice cream. Yum!

Is book contained a few recipes I would like to try here that are unique, such as Lemon Curd ice cream and Rose Petal sobet. Lots of photographs to enjoy too. This is one I would check out of the library occasionally though and have no plans to own. My favorite character was Enid, who was just so practical and had a philosophy of adapting to survive.

Quotes I liked:
"Look, people think there's some kind of cosmic significance for everything that happens. But in my experience the universe doesn't stop. It doesn't make exceptions. It just goes, and it's up to us whether we want to go with it."
"The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can't find them, make them."

Cookbook. This has a really great introduction. It explains the science behind ice cream, what effect each ingredient has on the mix, the best ingredients to use, and cooking techniques. The recipes make small batches, about 2-3 cups each, and some require uncooked egg whites. There are a few color pictures and the book's broken up into sections like "dinner parties," "children's parties," and "retro ices"...whatever those are. In addition to ice creams you'd eat out of a bowl, this also has a lot of recipes for molded ice creams, popsicles, sauces -- just different ways to serve frozen desserts. Probably good if you want to impress someone.
