Kingdom of Chains #2

Court of Blades

Rate this book
They say hope is the last thing lost.

Charlotte Livingston might be a descendent of the last Prince of Wales, but she is every bit English born and raised. So when her father informs her that she is to go Dinefwr Castle and play the role of Welsh royalty, she thinks he has lost his mind. The castle has a reputation for consuming its English occupants, and wastelanders can smell deceit a mile away. Cross the border, win hearts, and stay alive. It is a good thing the obnoxious Commander Tatum is there to keep her safe. If only she could tolerate his company…

Brock Tatum has spent the past year training the newly formed Carmarthen Militia—and bracing for war. Tensions between Carmarthenshire and England are rising, and trade is under threat. Cue the Welsh princess, sent to bind kingdom and country. But not everyone is welcoming of the half-blood arrival. Now Tatum is charged with protecting the whole dysfunctional family, and Lady Charlotte’s rebellious nature might make this his toughest assignment yet. He must keep her alive as she attempts to win over battered hearts across the kingdom… and guard his own heart in the process.

Court of Blades is book two in the medieval dystopian series Kingdom of Chains. If you love witty dialogue, a feisty heroine, and a cocky hero, then this high-emotion romance is for you.

Trigger warning: Death of a family member and graphic violence.

4.5 stars I don't know how she continues to do it, but Tanya Bird always gets the right balance of action, heartbreak, humor, and romance. I really loved Charlotte. She's a strong, witty, and genuinely caring character. I love how well she fit into her role as a princess after really putting forth the effort. She actually puts herself out there and pursues Tatum. Instead of the male being the one to initiate, I really loved it. The dynamic between the defenders always adds a little fun to the story and is what always makes me want more. It was a little predictable, I wish the baddie had been someone a little more unexpected. The animal characters are always a favorite of mine, and Sir Miles is a wonderful addition! If you haven't read any Tanya Bird books yet, I will always highly recommend her!

It has been a while since I read a book by Tanya Bird, but I don’t remember her novels being as depressing as this. I think the twist in the middle of the book really threw me off and it took the story in a different direction than I was expecting. I’m still uncertain on whether that was a good or bad turn in the book.

As for the characters, Tatum was good, but it took me a while to like Charlotte. For the first half of the story, I found her to be very rude and unlikeable. She did grow on me by the end, but still not the best FMCs the author has written. The romance was also very rushed and could have used more development before they started kissing and making out.

Overall, an okay read for me.

I am a huge Tonya Bird fan. I’ve always liked most of her books. I can’t say that this is one of my favorites, but it is not bad by any means.

This book has some wonderful scenes & I truly enjoyed going back to this world we have followed since the Defender series!

Once again, this is not a book I would normally read. Thanks Ruby Awards. However, I liked it, I thought Charlotte & Tatum were great characters. I'm definitely going to keep my eye out for Tanya Bird novels.

AN HONEST REVIEW FROM A YA WHO READS YA:

I honestly did not like Kingdom of Chains much, as Belle fell very flat for me. However, Charlotte… Wow. She may be the best character Tanya has ever written (and I’ve read a lot of her work).

Though I was devastated by Oliver’s death (he was also one of the best characters Tanya has written), I understand that it had to happen as a critical part of Charlotte’s arc.

Overall, this book was fantastic!

This story broke my heart, in a good way. I almost threw my Kindle across the room a good handful of times. How much heartache can one person take? It was hard to walk away from this book. There was never a dull moment!

CHEEKY PRINCESS MEETS PART DEFENDER PART STAND-UP COMEDIAN

“One time I was captured and tortured by a mime. He did unspeakable things to me.” Ba-dum-tss

This story, more than any other I've read by Ms. Bird, is an interesting blend of the modern and the medieval. Our heroine Charlotte is a woman with a strong sense of self. She's intuitive and assertive and a natural leader, plopped into a world where a leader is sorely needed. Despite intimidation and resistance she finds ways to reach out to her people and prove herself sincere in her new role as Princess of Carmarthenshire. In the process she garners the admiration of her bodyguard Brock Tatum who is alpha in every way, yet it's Princess Charlotte who takes the lead in their relationship. Romantically she's always one step ahead of him

Tatum is a brilliant military character with a keen sense of humor, and he and Charlotte mutually appreciate, support and amuse each other. Any scene in which these two interact is sure to be entertaining—be it in their banter or strategizing or intimacy, they are equally matched and bring out the best in each other. One of my very favorite scenes is when they each paint...shall we say...'creative' portraits of the other.

If you're intrigued by the idea of an historical dystopian mystery romance that mixes modern with medieval, has dialogue that toggles between the old and the new, and concepts that crossover the centuries... well then, pick this one up and give Ms. Bird a go. She brings imagination to this series and uniqueness to its characters that is sometimes out of the box, but in the very best way.

Tanya Bird continues to rip your heart out, and then piece it back together in Court of Blades. I absolutely adored the witty banter in this novel! Tatum can really pack a witty punch, but he was also rivaled by Charlotte's brother, Oliver. I've always loved the strength of Tanya Bird's women, and Charlotte didn't disappoint. She displayed absolute raw grit and pure power in her abilities and ingenuity. I appreciated how she called the shots, and that's exactly what Tatum needed. And Tatum was able to see beyond her bitter and rough exterior to her compassion and kindness, and break down her rough walls. They complimented each other in their uniqueness. Charlotte's entire world was disrupted when her family was brought to Dinefwyr castle because of her mother's royal Welsh blood. But her ex, Lord Wybert, is also there, and breathing down her neck at every move she makes. Tatum is the Defender in charge with keeping her and her family alive, but when bodies keep dropping around them...what is the best course of action?
I couldn't stop reading this amazing fade-to-black love story!

A Thrilling Read!

Charlotte and her blind brother, Oliver, (along with his dog, Sir Miles), have been raised to be proper British citizens by their indifferent father when their deceased mother's Welsh bloodlines make them the next logical heirs to Carmarthenshire and Dinefur Castle. Suddenly a Prince and Princess, they journey to their new home with their father and the man who had once jilted Charlote. Their task? Make peace, mend relationships, and win over a downtrodden people, IF they can stay alive. To succeed they have the Defenders, and Tatum, in particular. Charlotte and Tatum soon discover they have more in common than not. Their romance is woven through the story as Charlotte tries to connect with the people while treachery seeps in to add a level of mystery. Tanya Byrd does not just write stories, she creates landscapes and lives that rise up from the pages, fully formed people and places awash in color, sounds, scents, and emotion. I loved the book, the characters, and the story! Highly recommend!

I love everything that Tanya writes. You are always guaranteed lovely and humourous banter between characters and to have your attention grabbed from the first chapter that will piqued your interest and hold it until the end.

If you enjoy slow burn and multiple points of view, her books are for you.

Be aware this is a stand alone book that is the second book of a spinoff. The original series if Defender of Walls and just as amazing!
Highly suggest a reread of kingdom of chains to be reacquainted with characters, I did not do that and struggled at the beginning until everything clicked.

'We' agree that, over time, the people....will come to accept you as royalty'
'or kill us'
'Nobody is dying'
'can we have that in writing?'

One thing is sure, a Tanya book is an easy read. It doesn't get boring. The story has a good pace nad the chapters are a good size. The characters are awesome. I love their banter and their heartbreak, though you'll talk with my therapist about what happened because myheart just doesn't accept it still.

I loved Charlotte and Tatum and they are an amazing couple along with all the other defenders. Even the grumpy characters had their funny moments. Her father.... I don't like him but I'm glad he didn't turn out a complete loser.

I love this world so much that i want more... please. Maybe Tatum next.

Tanya has nailed it again. I won’t spoil the plot as the synopsis gives a good hint to what to expect. The arc of the book is underlined by likeable characters and a nasty protagonist who certainly plays the long game. The value and support (or not) of family and friends is a key theme running through to the end. I love the range of personalities and how they are a loyal unit, particularly for Tatum. The death of a certain character was somewhat disappointing as I was hoping for his story to be written but it fits with the arc of the plot. A good read which I recommend although it can help to have read previous related books in the series to get a sense of the world Tanya has created.

Tanya Bird is WILDLY underrated. I've read almost all (still have one to read) of her books and I've enjoyed all of them! Her early books were entertaining, but maybe a bit predictable. It's been great to see her evolve as a writer because this book is full of plot twists that I never saw coming, starting in the first few chapters! Her character development is always great, but she really shines in writing conversations between characters and making the reader feel like you're part of the conversation. The wit of her characters is unmatched. I'm in love with this series and I can't wait to find out which couple's story will be told next!

Leave it to Tanya Bird to get me out of my book funk!
I loved Court of Blades and couldn’t put it down. I wish I could live in her stories because I can never get enough of her characters! I loved Tatum, Charlotte, and Oliver. Their wittiness and humor was clever and I admire their strength! But I was definitely there for the love story and it did not disappoint just left me wanting more!
Tanya Bird has been my favorite author since The Royal Companion series and she has done it again! If you want to fall in love pick up any of her amazing books!

Wow, another amazing book written by Tanya Bird. She writes books that pull you into the story and you never want to leave. I laughed and I cried, it was like being on a roller coaster. It is full of witty banter, a courageous heroine and a strong sometimes cocky hero. The love story between Charlotte and Tatum was truely beautiful. Once I started reading, I couldn’t put the book down. I really hope there is more books to follow as I am not ready to leave this world and the wonderful defenders.
Tanya Bird would have to be my favourite author.

This book was amazing from start to finish and has everything you want in a good book from laughs to tears to swoonworthy moments.

Charlotte is such a strong and funny female character and I loved to see her growth in the book. There were several comments she made that had me laughing so hard.

Tatum is a good strong match for her and I love seeing their love story unfold.

Let's not forget the animals!! We get to see Margery again and we are introduced to the adorable Sir Miles and all I can say is I need a Sir Miles in my life!!

Wow! I binge read this book in one day. Tanya really knows how to rip you heart out and then put it back together again. The characters are so perfectly flawed that you can’t help but love them and route for their happily ever after. At times I was so angry, but that just makes the hea all the more beautiful. Lots of chuckle worthy moments and sarcastic humor which I love. Which defender will be next?

Court of Blades is a fantastic read! It has everything I look for in a novel... compelling characters (Love Charlotte's spunk and Tatum’s strength.), emotional tension, and a creative storyline. Tanya Bird is such a talented writer, and she engages the reader from the very beginning to its conclusion - and I always wish the story could continue!

Court of Blades is magnificent! I laughed, I cried, I fell in love with Charlotte and Tatum. Sir Miles has a piece of my heart also. The dry wit, the mystery, the romance will make you swoon and have you turning the pages until the very end!

Another great take me away book from Tanya. Better to be read in the series but can also be a stand along without confusion. I enjoy being transported into the world she creates. Even the struggles are so well written they allow understanding without trauma. A well done and enjoyable read.

fantastic

As with all Tanya’s books full of emotion I laughed and I so cried when Oliver was killed 😢 …. I thought he was going to be a great character in the story his death felt too soon!
But that certainly didn’t detract from the story
Well done Tanya keep on writing ***

I admit that I am a Tanya Bird fan/fanatic. Her writing brings me home. Her characters are full of life and you can almost feel them, know them. This book is about love, ideals, commitment, loyalty and fierce determination. Very strong yet extremely deep thinking lead character who will make you cheer for her. This is an author worth following.
