the plot twist at the end really got me fucked up, but not enough to give it 3 stars given that the characters had many characteristics but still not much depth somehow? and what’s up with cara’s friends? they hang out with her once, are mentioned getting off the plane and at the hotel once, and then are never mentioned again. were they not in the storm cellar??? or at the wedding??? did the hurricane kill them??? they are literally just not mentioned again but okay. moving on. i still have no idea what jobs any of the characters have - even though cara spends a lot of time at work and she’s apparently devoted to her work. i literally haven’t got a clue what she does. does she just spend her time talking with her ~boss~??? and the writing...... anyone could’ve written this. anyway, i didn’t really hate this book but there’s a lot of loose ends and not much depth. i guess the ending made up for some of that, but i can’t give this more than 2 stars.
From the first page to the last this book was fantastic. It had up's it had downs it felt like this story had really happened. Yes i did shed a tear at the end of the book. There was some characters in the book what annoyed me and i could imagine myself there and what i would do in that situation.Could read this book again and again.
I feel bad to go against the tide but I didn't enjoy this Novel. I have given it 2 and a half stars. It's the characters that made it so annoying for me.

Will Cara and Shane manage to overcome all obstacles? Or will their dream wedding turn into a nightmare? It had some twists and turns but unlike hopeless and gullible Cara I could see it happening.Ok let's start from the beginning, we meet Cara who is goody goody person, loved by everyone, the boss and her family adore her. Then theres Shane, he's the male and less irritating version of her with a bit of badness thrown in, to make him a bit more worthy( once he works out his problems he will be spotless) for precious Cara. Then we have a little sister who's spoil and is starving for attention. Heidi, she gets attention from no one to be Frank so what made her spoilt I could not guess.Maybe she is an over thinker and starved for attention, whatever the character is completely unexciting, like a cardboard.Betty and Mick are Caras parents who are again a caricature of interfering parents and Lauren and her husband (Shane's mom and dad) are the same but are wealthy. All of the characters are just 2 dimensional. It was annoying to get to the end . And Kim was this goddess like woman who was trying to keep calm and the general pacifier. Everything was ...I don't know..I couldn't connect with any of them and I actually felt that by the end when some twists rapidly happened I was just bored and wanted it to finish. Cara and for that matter the other characters have less dialogues and more reflection going on.Cara specifically thinks a lot and it's like even when she's angry she remains goody goody and is the better person. Her internal monologues felt like ..why do I have to listen to all of her emotions and feelings..why couldn't she be less annoying?! Ok I m getting carried away but towards the end I was like ok ..I know wherethis is got..are we there yet? Maybe it's the writing style or maybe it's me . But its finished and am so glad everything worked out the way it worked out. Ok read.
от трите книги на Мелиса Хил,които прочетох в изминалите дни тази най-много ми хареса..всъщност изобщо не очаквах,че ще ми харесат ,но определено си промених мнението.. много интересни истории,особено тази <3
Aaaaaaaaah really enjoyed this. All about families poking their noses in, and I,m sure we all know about that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Loved the characters. It made me laugh, and nearly made me cry.
OH MY GOD! I loved everything about this book! I loved the romance, I loved the cheesiness, I loved the characters (even though I hated most of them) I loved the tension, I loved the plottwist and definitely loved the ending!
3~3.5 stars. This would make a great beachy read, as it's filled with loads of interpersonal drama (and one big shocker!), wedding plans, and eventually, a Caribbean beach. Is it soapy? Sure. Is it rather unrealistic? You betcha. Does it make a good distraction when you just want something ridiculous and over-the-top? Yep!

Will Cara and Shane manage to overcome all obstacles? or will their dream wedding turn into a nightmare?
I am such a huge fan of Melissa Hill's books, when I found out about this I was so excited and couldn't wait to read! The book cover is just so cute, Very girly and easily attracts people's eyes when on shelves in bookstores or supermarkets.
So we meet Cara who is very much happy in love with Shane Richardson but he soon proposes to her and Cara is over the moon and cannot wait to share her excitement with all their friends and family, but once they tell everyone, their families try and interfere by telling them what their dream wedding should be like, leaving Cara feeling very down and not what she was hoping...
I loved this so much, made me feel very happy and warm inside because I love a good wedding and throughout the book I was rooting for Cara and Shane to have the wedding of their dreams. I wasn't a huge fan of Shane's parent's at first they came across as very selfish but my mind was changed again later on in the book. You can simply warm up to all the characters in this book and feel part of the book.
I totally didn't expect the little story-line bomb near to the end, Melissa you really threw me completely, totally had me surprised, never expected to see that coming at all.
St Lucia for a perfect wedding scene for the book great choice definitely, while reading I was dreaming I was there too on the golden warm sandy beach with beautiful blue sky no cloud to be seen and very bright sunshine, very relaxing picturesque scene. Melissa certainly knows ways to get you wanting to be in the glorious Caribbean.
I always love books by Melissa because with her style of writing,m she always gets her readers hooked and excited with her books and always has pretty book covers that you just cannot resist. I urge you all to go grab your own copy of The Guest List because has plenty of Irish-ness, Laughter, Love, Family affairs, Sadness, Friendship & A wonderful beach wedding...what not to miss!!
I only read my first Melissa Hill book last year and I thoroughly enjoyed it so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on her new release especially when I heard it was Wedding related.
When Shane proposes to Cara she is over the moon, but when their friends and family begin to “help” with the wedding plans things become more than a little stressful. Determined to have the Wedding they want they book their dream wedding but not everyone is pleased.
I absolutely loved this book and I devoured it in one sitting! All of the characters are very down to earth and the storyline is believable and because I am planning my wedding I could really relate to the story. It is nice to know even fictional characters have friends and family who like to take over when it comes to weddings! I loved Kim who is Cara’s sister in-law she was a very friendly, genuine and supportive character which is more than can be said for her spoilt sister Heidi, every time she appeared in the book she got my back up! As the book moved along I couldn’t put this book down I needed to see what on earth the families were going to say or do next and whether or not they would actually end up tying the knot!
I was pretty sure in my mind that I was going to be rating this an easy 4 star review but that all changed. Any of you who follow my reviews will know that I love unpredictable twists, well there is a shocking one in this book (I will be saying no more otherwise it will be a big spoiler alert) I really didn’t see this one coming and so this blew the 4 star out the window and made this a 5 star read.
This is a fantastic light hearted, entertaining read that has family battles and I nice little hidden twist.
Ok wow. I did NOT see that plot twist coming. That plot twist was insane, would be an understatement. I had a one-hour mental breakdown because of that plot twist and even ten glasses of water weren't enough to regain the number of brain cells I lost.
I'm still shocked by how much I liked this book. I wasn't expecting much to be honest and that is exactly why I was surprised to see myself actually connecting to the characters more than I connect to the members of my own family. Speaking of family, the clancy and the Richardson family is seriously weird and I LOVE IT. I LOVE HOW DRAMATIC EVERYONE IS.
There was so much drama in this book. SO much. It was like watching a soap opera. I found myself going from hating a character to loving that character every two chapters and sometimes coming back to hating on them again. It was a roller coaster of emotions, honestly.
Overall, I loved this book- impossible to put down, extremely engaging, dramatic, beautiful, with a bunch of "wtf" moments. The characters were seriously intriguing. I understood their reasoning behind every bad or good action they took. Even if it was bullshit, it was realistic. I felt like I was a part of that world. Some moments made me tear up and some moments made scream.
If you like drama, then I would highly recommend this book to you. It's about a wedding proposal and the hardships that follow afterward. It's mainly about the main characters, shane Richardson and cara clancy but we also get to know about the clancy and Richardson family members it's its just crazy.
Although this book did not have a riveting plot line, it was wonderfully written to reveal its varied and rich characters from Cara's traditional, affectionate yet controlling mother, her rather selfish, entitled diva younger sister to the snobbish and controlling future society in-laws who would go to any length to get their own way and usually did.
Consequently, Cara's nightmarish pre-wedding dramas seemed to go from bad to worse and it made one thankful you didn't have to go through that yourself. The book had a very surprising plot twist at the end which I don't think any reader could have predicted. It lifted the rating in my opinion. It was a memorable read.
Lovely book, not only explaining certain problems concerning the planification of a wedding but also some family troubles that could happen often than we think. Highly recommended if you like romantic comedies.
I’m sorry but this was baaaad. The “plot twist” at the very end? Oh - nbd, her big sister isn’t her big sister but her mother, which makes her mum her grandmother and her younger sister her aunt. Also, her boss - who lowkey was hitting on her - you guessed it: he’s her dad!!

This is one of my favourite books in a long time. close to home for me. made me laugh cry jump for joy and want more. loved all characters for different reasons. awesome
1.5/5 🌟✨ Guys, this is what happens when you don´t pay attention to the author of a book. My intention was to read The Guest List and all the way down I was thinking "why is the setting the same, but not the events from the sinopsis?" (Both of them are about marriage on an island) I f***ed up, so let´s review this one to make it worth it.
After Cara and Shane attend a luxurious wedding of a common friend, they both decide that a big event would only be as superficial and failed as the one they just attended. Instead, they decide they would like something private but meaningful, with people close to them. However, they know it´s imperative to invite their families. Yes, their relationship with their parents may be a little difficult sometimes, but for just one day together, What could possibly go wrong? This book is straight-up about family drama, mostly about:
Preparations: From the beginning, a message stuck clear in my head- Planning for your big day is not as simple as deciding what you want and delegating the organization to someone else. Everyone will want to get into your business before you can think about what you want yourself. Society expects you to do certain things (to invite everyone you know to your wedding, even if they are distant relatives you don´t know; when being pregnant you must not have a C cut unless it´s medically necessary; you can´t be a woman who balances work and private life because you are seen as a workaholic and so on). Everyone will have an opinion, but trying to make everyone happy will always result in someone unfulfilled, very likely the one supposed to enjoy the event. It´s very realistic in that event-planning sense, but honestly, a big part of the book is just the family fighting about the place in which the wedding should be, who will pay for it, how many people will be invited, and it was overexploited. You can´t imagine how many chapters are dedicated to the same issue. If one chapter is about the bride fighting with her mother-in-law, the other is just about her meeting in a bar with her best friend to complain about what just happened and receiving some advice, the next one is about her retelling and complaining about the same thing to her husband and the other one is a new conversation with the inlaws. It´s the same cycle for all of the issues in the book. All of that could have been in the same first chapter, with her immediately having a comeback and not having to look for reassurance with other people. Bottomline: there is a lot of filler and repetitive scenes.
The guest list: There are 3 main couples: - Cara and Shawn: Both of them work really hard, she has intentions of getting married but doesn´t know if her boyfriend wants to settle. - Danielle and Zack: Danielle is Cara´s older sister, she traveled abroad when younger and rarely visits or communicates with her family, is somehow uncomfortable near them and their relationship is tense. - Heidi and Paul: Heidi is Cara´s younger sister, always felt jealous and less loved by her mother. That makes her hold a grudge. She loves getting attention. - Cara´s and Shawn´s parents: both having their own points of view on how their daughter and son should behave, what plans they should have, how they should do things. Very stubborn. This family is just a clock, tik-tok-tik-tok. It´s just a matter of time for an argument to unwrap. Even dough there was entertaining potential, there was way TOO much background on each one of them and the moments where all of them get together in the same place (the actual wedding) just appears at the END, so all of the pace at the start was boring and tedious.
The secret: there´s a plot twist I must admit I liked, but again, I would even risk and say that is the only part that truly had me stuck to the book and the savior of half the star. Skipping lines and reading superficially was necessary to keep up. The word “tacky”, “chaptze” and “black sheep” were used SO many times. I felt the way it was written was not the most pleasant or smooth. It seems like they just join many short sentences and abuse personal pronouns. ”She opened her patio doors and walked out onto the sun porch. Taking a seat on the chaise longue, she watched the tide roll in and out, lost in her thoughts. She could handle this, she reassured herself. After all, she had been away from them for so long now, and had made too much of herself to allow some simple problem to destroy her” It´s a collection of sentences which don´t seem to connect into a paragraph. This book is way out of my interest zone, but I'm getting tired of cozies. Since I really hate weddings, I picked this one because the sample appeared it was going to be a send up of over the top weddings. Instead it was a long, drawn out journal of a couple fighting to have the wedding of their dreams instead of the wedding of their families' dreams. There was an interesting cast of characters. The mothers may have seemed "over the top," but I have a friend who went thousands of dollars into debt for an elaborate wedding that neither she nor her daughter could afford. Because she paid the bill, she thought she could control everything. She never recovered financially. The bride's mother reminded me a lot of my friend.
I saw half of the "twist" coming, but not the other half.
I never know who is to blame for bad editing on a book, so I didn't take away a star for that; however, I'll just note that the editing was sub par! There were too many places where words were left out or out of order or the wrong word was used. Usually it was just a small word, but it was still jarring. It interrupted the flow of the story. I also felt the book itself was about 50 pages too long. Still, I liked it well enough that I might try another book by the author the next time I need a break from murder. If this had been a "cozy" mystery, Shane's Mom would have been the murder victim for sure
Cara and Shane want to have a wedding. But everyone else thinks this wedding is about them and not the bride and groom. Over the preparations, thr bride and groom fall out, making everyone realize how selfish they have been.
I have always found irish rom coms very close to south asian comtemporary literature. The family theatrics, the interference, the insecurities. If the characters are renamed to Pakistani names and scale back a bit on the physical aspects of the relationships, the story will read something straight out of Khawateen Digest.
There are arcs in the story that have pretty anti-climactic ends. The novel is kind of anti-climactic considering it ends on a character introduced halfway through the novel, a character who did not have much impact on the whole setting.
Lets talk characters. They are all eccentric. There are some arguments between them. The kind you have in your head when family puts you in a tight spot.
Mick and Betty are Cara's middle class hardworking parents. Laurel and Gene are Sgane's posh parents
Kim is the ever positive sister in law. Hiedi is Cara's selfish little sister. Danielle is the estranged sister.
The whole Danielle arc seems quite forced until you reach the bombshell. She could have been introduced earlier with a little more of reaction on her absence from her family members.
Cara and Shane are rays of sunshine in their selfish families. They are the apples that fell under a totally different tree.
Surprisingly, all Betty's girls manage to get married into rich families. Where did all the normal people go? This part only has such desi soap serial vibes.
3 stars because it is good time pass, with a not so strong story.

1.5 stars. This is a romance family drama set in Ireland. It’s about a young, good-looking, upwardly mobile couple, Cara and Shane, who decide to get married at St Lucia, a Caribbean island, after considering the financial impacts of other weddings and their own feelings. None of the family, on both sides, like their decision and the cracks in the familial relationships break open. Everything works out in the end, but a big family secret is revealed while they are hunkered down in the storm shelter when Hurricane Gail hits St Lucia on their wedding day.
This book is filled with cringe-worthy moments that I am working hard to forget. All young people are privileged, successful, attractive and slim and these qualities are elevated compared to “frustratingly wide hips”. There are also some true-to-life value divides and family rifts that are actually quite good (eg the highly conservative Betty (Cara’s mum) who thinks that all women should go through natural child birth because that is what Eve had to do) but not enough to lift this book out of a miasma of vomit-inducing moments.
The author obviously plans out her books and does a good job; the story skates along at a regular pace.
It is a book for the bore and boring list. I couldn’t even rate it as a beach read. If you are young, conservative and want to believe that getting married is an ultimate goal then it’s probably for you.
This book was a rollercoaster for me, but not necessarily in the best way. It started really slow. I was struggling to get connected to the characters and invested in the story. I think part of that was the multiple points of view narrative. I think this would have been a better story if told only from Cara's point of view. There was so much jumping from one character to another that I felt like they were never faithfully developed. I don't think the multiple points of view best served the story.
Further into the story I did become interested. The conflicts were really getting more intense, but it seemed as soon as conflict reared its head it was resolved. I found myself struggling closer to the wedding to really care anymore. As for the twist, I think it was really easy to guess. Once again, it's revealed and then everything is fine a few pages later.
Was it a bad book? No. This had a ton of potential. I think there were just too many characters points of view, which revealed too much and disrupted the flow of the story. Too many conflicts that were solved too quickly. Not enough character development. I think this just overall needed more development in plot and character. It was a quick read. This could be a good, light vacation novel.
The premise of The Guest List is promising. Cara and Shane, two young hopefuls who just want to celebrate their love with a nice small wedding, are confronted with warring families and all the secrets that come with them. The execution left something to be desired though.
The writing is a bit blah, and the pacing is off, with scenes thrown in that don't add to the story and what seem like pivotal moments flitted right over. The bigger issue though is how flat the characters are. The characters are weak and underdeveloped and rarely interesting, with the almost exception of one estranged older sister. The plot is meant to be character driven, with all major plot points arising from direct person to person conflict or the resolution thereof, but with the characters so unfleshed-out the only way to do this is to make them interact in wholly unhuman ways. This is perhaps most obvious when the big reveal occurs, and ends up having no consequences whatsoever, assumedly so that the book could wrap up neatly in the five pages that were still left.
If you don't have anything else to do and The Guest List happens to be on your shelf, then sure. Go for it. But don't expect anything to write home about.
A cute story about a wedding proposal and all the disasters that follow afterwards. The main story is about Cara and Shane - and their wedding - although it also follows the lives of the other members of the family. The author gives a glimpse into almost everyone's minds, from the youngest sister's to the eldest's and the sister-in-law's, from the mother of the bride's to the inlaws'. I'll admit that at first I was slightly thrown off when the story jumped from the main couple to the secondary characters, but I have to say that the author managed it well and eventually it turned out to be an excellent decision, as it made me care for the other characters as well and made me wish for all of them to get a happily ever after. There was a lot of drama surrounding the wedding, which spiced up the story and kept me turning pages to see what would happen next, and there's a totally unexpected plot twist at the end that I did not see coming. It was a bumpy ride to a cute happy ending and I enjoyed this book very much.
Romance and/or women’s fiction centred on weddings is my trashy-reading catnip. I also had good experiences with Melissa Hill in the past, and this book was a charity shop find. However, while it had some high points – interfamilial tensions in particular – it appeared to be mostly unaware that AITA actually applied to Cara more than anyone else. Yes, actually, weddings ARE about the families, not the One Twu Wuv of the two (in this case, generic and indistinguishable) members of the couple. Yes, actually, making people go to a CARIBBEAN ISLAND for a wedding is a huge ask, financially, organisationally, and emotionally. Yes, actually, not realising the Caribbean is subject to regular hurricanes is a full dumbass fail. There was also a whole subplot about how elective Caesarean sections are subject to judgement, which made me think this book was published way earlier than 2013. Do people honestly give this much of a shit about it? The way everyone reconciled at the end, healing years’ long rifts with single conversations, was eye-rolling. You don’t actually have to redeem everyone to get a HEA. Lastly, the Donald Trump comparison for a love interest aged extremely poorly.

What a fun fun weekend read. At the core this story is about Cara and how (almost) everyone is against her dream wedding to Shane. But as we dive in, the book shows us so many characters - and mind you all are different and engaging on their own - who can each have their own book tbh. The love, the relationship, the ups and the downs, the rich, the middle class - everything is covered aptly in this book while yet keeping it a light read. With a major twist in the end, the book did see a beautiful happy ending - just right to keep you smiling with a hope that every hurricane is going to die down eventually and lead you to your own happy ending!
